She runs the shop while her father (the founder) is in India right now celebrating his 82nd birthday in Delhi, and she runs it with the kind of warmth and expertise that makes you feel like you wandered into a family's living room where everyone happens to be extraordinarily talented at dressing people. She pulled pieces we never would have found on our own, knew immediately what worked and what didn't, and was honest in a way that made the whole experience feel collaborative rather than transactional. My wife ended up in a lavender and silver lehenga that made her look like she'd been wearing lehengas her entire life. I ended up in a royal blue sherwani that I am now looking for excuses to wear again. Harminder styled both of us with real care, adjusting details until everything sat exactly right. The collection itself is stunning. They work directly with artisans across India and it shows in the quality and the range of what's on the racks. These are not mass-produced pieces you'll see on six other people at the reception. The embroidery on my wife's outfit alone is the kind of detail that stops people mid-conversation. I was looking for a men's kurta / sherwani for a sangeet and the man at the front desk (didn't catch his name) suggested their kurtas as the more affordable but still stylish option, and then worked with us to go through ~10 styles until we found a couple we really liked. They were on the higher end of the kurtas they had so one was ~$250. A family wedding is coming up, and I panicked after realizing exactly how many outfits I needed. I was in denial. Indian weddings are not for the faint of heart. Nowadays, there are a billion online boutiques where you can specify measurements, and all that, but shipping from India takes time. You also really don't know what you're getting. Also, it's important to try things on. I also know you can drive to Fremont or the South Bay, but if you live in SF or on the Peninsula, Akarshan is very convenient, and there are plenty of choices there. It feels like you're shopping the Indian way, where they have lots of options and the storekeeper takes them out to show you. Then you hem and haw, try on, and spend a few hours figuring out what will work. It made shopping way less stressful. Akarshan offers the latest styles and is an excellent choice for wedding and party wear. If you can't go to India to shop and don't want to head to the South Bay, try Akarshan. Harminder spent a considerable amount of time helping me out, and I truly appreciated her. Finally, Akarshan's prices are comparable to online costs for these types of outfits (wedding guests, party wear), so why not go in person and try a few things on, and support a local business? I don't often write reviews, but I had such a personal and unique shopping experience that I wanted to share. I shopped at Akarshan this week and was blown away. Harminder met me at our scheduled appointment time, accompanied by another woman to assist her. I brought my friend to be outfitted for a Bollywood party we would be attending at the end of the week. My friend was able to find his Kurta suit pretty quickly. It was very high quality and reasonably priced. I, on the other hand, was very particular because there were so many choices that it was almost overwhelming. Charminder was very patient with me! After trying on several different Lehenga Cholis (all of which were good choices), I finally decided on one. She then showed me a variety of jewelry to match, and we tried different variations. We decided on the best sets. My top was too large, and it was getting late, but she made a call to her seamstress, who waited for me to go over and have the top fitted. I picked the top up two days later, giving me two days before the event, to make sure we had time for adjustments if needed. The alterations were done perfectly by Marcel at no extra charge.
