I am a San Bruno resident and having catch 22 in our town is such a treat! Woman owned and operated, Jay brings the most intention and passion towards her business. I regularly get my hair cut by her after trying to find a good stylist in the area, I will go to her as long as she's willing to take me! It's also a great spot for gift shopping, and of course personal shopping sprees. Since the clothes are consignment it's ethically moral. Classic salon service, honest suggestions for quality products for hair care, accessories and vintage wardrobe. I've been going to Ms. Jay since her DC location in the alleyway. Now that she's in San Bruno, get there like 15 mins early because you do have to pay for hourly parking (not expensive). Upon arrival, you are greeted and you can still thrift in her now more spacious boutique. Vintage finds are insane! For a trim and touch up layering she starts with washing your hair, uses the blades to layer and styles your hair all while she's having a genuine conversation with you. Then, she recommends products for your hair and sets up your next appointment because just like she values your time, her time is valuable as well. She's by appointment only. In and out; wash, cut, style, payment: 1 hour. Timing also depends on service. Like when she performs a perm on me, I expect to be there a few hours. 10/10 would recommend! read more

I meant to write this review sooner, but things have been quite busy. That said, this wonderful boutique deserves a 5 star review for so many reason: The selection: it is wonderful, high quality, and stylish. There were so many beautiful pieces I wanted to buy! Sometimes you go to thrifts and there's really nothing there of style, BUT the owner has amazing taste and she knows what she's doing when selecting pieces for her shop. The environment: it is clean, and manicured. At first I thought I was walking into a high end boutique until I realized what a bargain the prices were! The owner: she is AMAZING! She's so personable and you can tell she cares about her shop and customers. She listened to my preferences and picked out SOOO MANY amazing pieces for me to try. What was so special was that she gave her honest opinion about how they looked like on me. I don't really have anyone to go shopping with, and it's always helpful to get someone's opinion. Typically, employees aren't there to help you decide, but she was more than willing. She felt like a good friend! My daughter and I arrived today for our appointments right at 11am and we were promptly greeted and welcomed by Miss J. When you walk in, you can't help but notice the pleasant vibe and beautiful displays in the consignment section of the shop. The clothes are displayed with care and the professionalism of a high-end department store! As we make our way to the back of the store, J gives me the key to a locker to store my purse and jacket which definitely provides a sense of security. We discuss what we each want today and the fun begins. I'll share before/after pics of our hair and I HOPE Yelp doesn't decide to "not recommend" this review like they did my last one and the reviews of 12 other loyal clients. The owner of the salon, J, is rude and condescending. We walked out of her salon without even getting a haircut and it was not based on one bad act. Appointment was delayed because she had a flat tire that morning. No issue with that. Life happens. When we arrive at 10:30 am, door was closed and no lights on. I text to tell her we are there, thought maybe she was delayed further. A woman, who's on the phone, came to the front door, unlocked it, without pushing the door to let us in, just left it closed and walks away. So we had to assume she was J and walk in. The whole time she was on the phone, talking to some vendor, I don't know. She motioned for us to go back to where the salon chairs are situated. She kept talking for another 5-10 mins. When she gets off the phone, no apology, no friendly hello, just what do want to do with your hair. That was strike one. My daughter, 13, hasn't been to a salon since Covid so I let her know we needed to help with figuring out what to do with her hair. The lecture began. She berated my daughter for not washing her hair everyday and that we came without a a hairstyle already picked out. I could tell my daughter was feeling uncomfortable and had a look of humiliation from being told her hair was dirty. Strike two. This lecture continued for another 10 mins then she starts the sales pitch "so what do you use to wash your hair?" Most of us know that's a leeway, for later, to suggest hair products. I showed her the shampoo/conditioner my daughter uses, she proceeded to ask where do you buy it, and told us it's probably not professional grade. Nice setup for later sales pitch. Since her tone and attitude has been condescending and rude the entire time, I had no qualms to ask her please do not try to sell us anything. She of course was offended and started her next lecture of "if I'm suppose to take care of your hair, then I have the right to decline a client." Strike three. At that point, there was no way I was going to trust her with our hair (oh yes, we had back to back hair appointments) so we got up and left. She wanted to yell at us some more but we just kept walking out. My only power at that moment is not to spend my money at her establishment and later, to write a review about her behavior. In these hard times for small business, I wanted to give her as much benefit of doubt as possible, but after three strikes, you're out. read more

I've been a customer for a few years and let me just say, Ms. Jae is Amazing! She has been doing hair for 30+ years and knows exactly what she is doing. She starts off by having a full consultation where she explains the texture of the hair, symmetry, etc. Just recent I came in to get my hair fixed after another stylist from a different salon who made it super choppy. She was able to explain exactly what the stylist did wrong and how we can fix it. I was in shock after seeing the final result and promised myself I would never stray from Jae again! Seriously, she is the only stylist I've come to know that will spend time and explain every step before she begins to cut, and I can appreciate that. Jae always makes me feel that I could trust her and that is extremely important when it comes to hair, in my opinion. Major props for how beautiful her new location is. I've been going to J's for over 15 years now! Such loyalty is only because she knows her clients, cares, listens to their needs and wants, consults professionally, gives honest opinions and makes deep connections that you wouldn't get any place even if you tried. There is mutual respect, love and admiration in our relationship. With that, I've never known J to get all "sales pitchy" or product centric with ANY of her clients. As a matter of fact, she makes qualified recommendations based on conversation, her experience and education as a SUCCESSFUL, minority, woman business owner. I would leave her shop looking and feeling great! She not only took care of my exterior but took to the time to listen to me and help fix whatever problem I had that week. The best time EVER! Lol! For that one person who left a one star review... You sound like a helicopter parent who tried to take control of your daughter's hair situation. J has such empathy that she probably felt the frustration from your own daughter, channeled that emotion and kicked you OUT because you were rude and embarrassing (not the other way around) ;). These ladies brought life back to hair that I thought was dead, lifeless, and hopeless for years. My hair is naturally curly, and just constantly had a type of frizz that just felt like I had tumbleweed to deal with on top of my head, but they walked me through the best way to care for my hair in a way no other stylist has been able to provide before. For this particular visit I had them style my hair instead of use my natural curl since I had somewhere to go, but I will definitely be back. The most impressive part about this visit, the suggestion to come back for a trim was every four months. Yes, FOUR MONTHS! I think every other hairdresser has been lying to me about how often I need to come back just so they can get my money more often. She said I could come back sooner if I wanted, but it was ultimately up to what I thought would work best for me. I just had the most amazing experience at Catch 22! Jay, the owner, is a very talented hair artist and an inspiring businesswoman. I really enjoyed our conversation and she did a dynamite job on my hair! Seriously, it has never looked so good. My highlights were really hard to blend from my previous dye job and it looks seamless and beautiful. It feels healthier too! And she was very accommodating with my last-minute booking and she squeezed in my BFF while I was processing so it turned into quality social time too! I'm coming back Monday for a haircut, in fact! LMAO...KC, I don't know you. I don't know if you were having a bad day/week/month/year/life/pandemic. I don't know if there was miscommunication or misinterpretation. I don't know what actually happened since I wasn't there. That being said, I'll write to what I do know. 1. I know that in order for a small business owner,especially in a service, especially as a minority female, especially as a single mother, to grow as Ms. J has successfully accomplished, they would need to have exceptional knowledge and talent in their craft to build and maintain a loyal client base. 2. I know I've spent many hours in J's chair, throughout 25+ years, through her good days and bad days. Never have I witnessed her be rude or condescending to anyone. Never pushed a sale of products. For J, recommending isn't pushing it's about caring and sharing her expertise. It's not only about feeling beautiful in the moment leaving the salon with a new hair do. It's about the long term as well. Making sure you feel confident and proud exercising the knowledge gained to maintain healthy hair. 3. I know that if you fully comprehend and appreciate points one and two and for anyone who knows her, you would understand that in order for the statement of "rude and condescending" to ring 100% true about J then you probably earn it. I'm always hesitant about writing reviews of places I love in fear that I gets too busy but in this case it's past due and well deserved. I've strayed a couple times in the earlier years but learned my lesson. Had to come back and have her fix the messes I got myself into. SMH. Never again. Client for life. Jay makes me look fabulous always and she's been my hairdresser for over 10 years even before her new salon. I appreciate her honesty and care. She has genuine concern for long term care and maintenance not just 1 time treatment. I love how she shares after care maintenance for hair as it's really what's important after you walk out of salon. I love the family vibe she gives to me and I can see to all her clients as well. Her new salon is absolutely beautiful! It has a great atmosphere and very relaxing. I was just there a couple of weeks ago after a long week with work and an active toddler. As soon as I came in, she said sit back and relax. Her and her daughter offered me a beverage, snack, and a massage chair. I almost fell asleep under dryer coz I was so relaxed. I have been going to J since I myself was a teenager! 17 years old I believe, and YEARS later I still go to her, and I have my own TEENAGERS as well! First off, as a teenage GIRL, I would have APPRECIATED someone TEACHING me and telling me what I am doing wrong in order to properly take care of my hair. That is one of the many reasons that I only trust J with my hair. Because I know she is an EXPERT in her field, and I would GLADLY accept any recommendations from her, whether it is a hairstyle or hair product! J treats all of her customers like family, so if you want someone that does not small talk with you to get to know you and just "does whatever you ask for" then maybe this place is not for you. all i have to say is AMAZING!!! I have had so much trouble with my hair salon experiences over the past years. every time i would ask for a certain color or style, i would never be satisfied. of course as any person with bad salon experience, i walked in feeling a little anxious even though I've heard great things about this place. I was greeted by Ms. J and immediately noticed how friendly and outgoing she was. first we talked about what I wanted done with my hair and she talked me through how the process was going to go and i really appreciated that. not many stylists take the time to truly listen to what and how you want your hair done. Ms. J cut my hair first and kept it long just like i asked! I then transferred to Naomi and she proceeded to color my head. She is so impressive and sweet! She gave me some great advice on how to keep up with my hair and she walked me through every step on what she was doing with my hair.
