Finally managed to sneak over here without the entourage we usually have to bring (i.e., son, daughter in law, grand daughter...) to enjoy dinner together, just the hubby and myself. Usually on a Saturday night, this place is PACKED and not just for dinner! We've been once or twice on a Saturday and sworn we'd never go on that night again because of the half drunk women and men at the bar, the thumping music turned up loud so they're all yelling to be heated over the music...you get the picture... No so, tonight. Tonight we settled into our booth with the football game on (turned so low you can't hear it), the restaurant filled with the quiet murmur of voices of the other couples enjoy their meals...there was even a party of 15 seated at the long table up front with children (not that you'd have noticed since they were so quiet and well-behaved!) enjoying what looked like a family get-together. Can't help coming back here over and over...the food is CONSISTENTLY THAT GOOD. Sushi? Out of this world! Hibachi? Knocks it out of the ballpark! But omg...their clear soup is something you just want a kiddie pool size of so you can almost bathe in that stuff...look at our bowls! Yeah. There's nothing left!! Their house salads with that ginger dressing? Equally delicious. Their yum-yum sauce (they call it shrimp sauce) is on point and so is their steak sauce. We have never been disappointed with anything we've eaten here. It's always hot, freshly prepared, delicious! So much better than any other place I've tried...what's that saying? "Always copied, never duplicated". That's this place. I've tried so many hibachi places, sushi places...no place I've been to HAS BOTH under the same roof. The service is excellent, haven't found anything to ever complain about except the occasional drunk or obnoxious patron, but that's not the establishment's fault. That's society's fault If you love sushi...or if you don't, but you love hibachi...or tempura, or gyoza dumplings, seaweed salad...any Japanese dish you can think of or combination of sushi flavors...fried rolls or raw rolls....sushi or sashimi pieces too...try this place and you'll find your newest fav spot to have that night out!! read more

We dined in on a Friday night. We had a larger party and they were busy but we were sat promptly. We live locally and have visited a handful of times. We have always enjoyed fast, friendly service here. We got the bogo beer and wine for happy hour (5-7pm), vegetable tempura, golden cheese wontons and gyoza to start. The veggies were beautifully crisp and the cheese wontons are a little on the sweeter side than I would've expected but good nonetheless. The hibachi was very generously portioned and the sushi roll was beautifully made and presented. Two party members received a warm beer (due to a keg change) and when brought to the attention of the server two cold bottled beers were brought out promptly. We felt the service was above and beyond and everyone enjoyed their meals. We will be back. read more

Stopped in last night for dinner with my wife. Upon entering this small Asian restaurant in a Publix shopping center in Oakleaf, we were greeted by a hostess who seated us at a semi-circle booth near the front door. It was a fun place to sit with my wife for a date. Our server greeted us, provided us with our menus and took our drink orders. The menu is a little expansive and if you are undecided, you will have a hard time choosing. Also, the dine-in sushi menu does not have descriptions of the rolls but our server gave us a take out menu which shows ingredients. After several visits by and some help from our server, we settled on the dinner bento box which consists of a choice of protein, soup and salad, tempura vegetables, tempura shrimp, shrimp shumai, and a California roll. I opted for the chicken katsu and my wife opted for teriyaki shrimp. Note, your soup and salad options are limited it is not any soup or salad on the menu. We received our soup and salad first. Clear soup for both of us and a garden salad with ranch for her and a garden salad with ginger for me. The soup was fresh and the salad was okay but we were only given forks and having a knife to cut some of the larger veggies would have been appreciated. When our bento boxes arrived, we were amazed by the portion sizes. Each box had 3 shrimp tempura, several tempura veggies (broccoli, sweet potato, onion, zucchini and acorn squash), 3 shrimp shumai and a whole California roll. Plus our protein a whole chicken katsu breast for me and six teriyaki shrimp on a bed of veggies for her. The food was well prepared and tasted good but a couple of items missed for us the ponzu sauce for my katsu was a little too sweet for my taste and my wife's veggies for her shrimp tasted a little burnt. Not a bad choice for dinner in the Oakleaf area, I would recommend giving it a shot. They also do carry-out. read more

One of my favorite sushi places next to Sushi Bear. The restaurant is always clean, has nice lighting, and pretty good customer service. I usually don't come here to dine in but get their to-go. They have lunch specials that are affordable and it comes with soup (clear chicken broth or miso) and salad (with ginger or ranch dressing) and your choice of 2 or three rolls (you pick from a list) for either $12 or $15. The rolls are decent size, some of them though only have 5 or 6 rolls instead of the standard 8 rolls. It depends on what you get. Sometimes the rolls aren't cut all the way and the filling falls out when I try to pick them up (hence, knocking off one star). It can get messy if the rolls aren't cut all the way and they end up falling apart. Other than that, most of their rolls are pretty tasty, filling, and the presentation is always nice. The rolls I had last time were: Fish tempura roll: 8/10 - I appreciate that they added alot of fish tempura (fish fried in a batter) to the roll! The rice to fish ratio was perfect!!! I believe it has avocado inside and masago on top, but it's one of their more delicious rolls! I just wish they would serve the usual 8 quantity because I wanted more of it. Oshinko roll: 8/10 - another roll that I love. It's essentially a daikon (pickled radish) roll and the tartness of the radish goes along so well with the seaweed and rice. This is more of a maki style as the seaweed is wrapped outside of the roll instead of inside the roll. Tamago and squid nigiri: 9/10 - two of my favorite nigiri! I love the tamago (sweet egg) because it reminds me of a sweet, egg soufflé. The squid is so fresh as it had no fishy aftertaste, but it is a bit chewy (squid has a chewiness to it) for those who are keen about textures. I also like getting Toro (tuna belly) when its in season as it just melts in your mouth due to the marbling on it! I've tried other rolls here and they've all been delicious and great! Another favorite roll is the sweet potato tempura roll. The sweetness of the sweet potato cuts down on the richness of the eel sauce, rice, and seaweed. Overall, a solid place for sushi and they do have happy hour specials too! Their rice to filling and roll ratio is great too and they don't overly add rice to their rolls. One thing I noticed about not so great sushi restaurants is that they typically add way too much rice to filling ratio. But here at Akaya, you don't get any of that. I suggest you come try out this place! read more

One of my favorite places to visit when I am in town. The prices for sushi are decent and their lunch special is great. (I usually go for their 3 maki rolls for $15 with soup) They recently raised the prices of their lunch. Their teriyaki and eel rice plates are also great. The teriyaki chicken comes out on a hot plate. You can always see and smell it as the server carries it across the restaurant. I have tried their hibachi and that is also delicious. The business owner and staff are always friendly and the service here is great. If you are getting to go on a busy night it might take a little long but I have never waited longer than 10 minutes for a table. On weekends it tends to get busy I have not tried their drinks or anything at the bar but their rolls are great. I usually get the Lion King roll at dinner and there is no other place that does it as they do. Overall, their prices are decent for what you get and I love coming here for a quick eat or for dinner. read more

This little place was an accidental find in a new area to mem I was in that area doing business and I saw this restaurant. I love sushi and had to try. You will be seated by a hostess. The dark decor was relaxing. They have t.v.s mounted all around. They have free wifi. I got a soft shell appetizer and scallop hibachi lunch. They are average prices thy tasted above average. The food was yummy. I was filled quick. I recommend this place if you are a sushi restaurant lover. Next time I am in that area I will definitely try the sushi there. read more

One word: tasteless. As in the food had no taste. I had the lunch chicken teriyaki and my GF had the shrimp teriyaki. Neither tasted like there was any seasoning used in the cooking. And the teriyaki was drizzled over the food when it was plated. This is not the first time as we have visited this location before. and had Hibachi as well. As they cook the meals in the back there is no way to know for sure but It seems like some corners are being cut and taste is being sacrificed. On the plus side the gyoza was good and the service was prompt as always. I'm not a sushi aficionado so I can't offer any useful comments. We will likely give them another try but they need to go back to what they were doing cooking wise in the past. I hope they do. read more

My brother and sister in law were in town and my family and I were planning on going out to eat at this thai restuarant. However, when we got there the place was closed. My brother wanted some sushi so I suggested coming here since I've been here before and loved it. When we got here, we were greeted right away and was seated at a table. My baby nephew was with us so they accommodated so we could sit at a table that was roomy and large. We started off with some miso and clear soup, as well as some ginger salad. They were very good. We also ordered the spicy edamame and tuna tataki. It was yummy! Next were the dragon roll and akaya rolls with the 23 piece sashimi. My oh my, the rolls were freaking delicious and the sashimi was perfecto! Very fresh and clean and smooth. My parents got the steak and chicken hibachi and they also loved their food. For dessert, we got the fried vanilla ice cream and it was bomb! Overall, it was a great family outing and we all enjoyed out food. The waitress was very friendly, sweet, and kind. Ordered a spicy tuna roll, shrimp and steak hibachi, and an extra side of noodles to go. I got home and the wrong sushi roll was in my bag. Whatever, I still ate the one that was included and it was so-so. Then, moved on to the hibachi. It is the blandest food ever. Literally tastes like zero seasoning, salt, pepper, or anything was even used while cooking. The steak is terrible and overcooked despite being asked what temp I wanted it cooked. The shrimp is rubbery and oddly tastes watery. The noodles are just ok. For nearly $50, I'd expect much better. This was a waste of money. read more

I took my dad out to dinner for his birthday tonight and my bf tagged along. We always go out to eat at Akaya for our family dinners. I once gave this restaurant a 5 star review. We waited for an hour to get our food. Our waitress talked to us twice and didn't even refill drinks in this time frame (blonde girl). I eventually was able to stop her and ask where our food was. When the food came out it was Luke warm and our steak was raw. We are normally very patient and understand the restaurant business. We finally asked for the manager and all she said was do you want me to recook it at first and apologized and eventually comped all of our meals. This is a huge let down manager stated chef quit this morning so we get it but the service was horrible and it was not very busy they had 4 waiters/waitresses on staff. Sad to say we probably won't go back. It's a shame because when the food is cooked correctly and service is on point this place is amazing. read more

Food is decent. I watched the bar tender fix a drink and actually drank out of the glass he was serving the customer. I told the cashier and she didn't believe me. After I requested to speak with the manager she turned around and ask the bar tender if he in fact drank out of the customer drink before serving and he admitted he did but only thur the straw but forgot to throw straw away. They then went to the customer's table to get the drink to remake. Gross and unprofessional. Needless to say my food came out with mayo. I'm allergic and for sure I said no spicy sauce. We ended up not caring for the cocktails, after leaving we did see a sign needing experienced bar tenders, so keep that in mind. But the food was amazing!! I should have not gone here from my previous experience First off it had a bad smell but couldn't figure it out ate only part of it and threw the rest out.
