I was impressed with the quality of the sushi here. The chef is very authentic and creates a very very well done sushi. I stuck with the whole raw chunks of fish and they were fantastic. The wasabi was fresh as was the ginger. The atmosphere is relaxed and slow paced. It was nice sitting at the sushi bar, service was decent, but not very fast. I have received an attitude more times than I can count for subpar service and subpar food. I was ordering lunch today (due to everything closed ) over the phone to be picked up which was totaling over $50 . By the end of the call ,the owner (older cranky women) of the restaurant , who was taking the order thought I hung up and stated how annoying I was . Even if I was annoying her while trying to navigate a poorly arranged menu online there is absolutely no excuse for her stating what she did. I will never ever ever give this place my time of day and I will tell every single person I know to avoid that miserable women . I have frequented this place for the last 10 years . The freshest sushi you can eat around this area! The staff is Friendly, attentive and they seem to a get a long. They just relocated on Market street, only a street over from where they were originally. The decor is cute and modern. The family who owns this place knows all of the local customers who frequent lots and is very inviting to them as well as everyone else! This is not your typical food chain japanese sushi restaurant. This is a local gem! I love the Sashimi dinner and have never had raw fish here that was not fresh. It's BYOB which is a plus as well. My wife and I have tried a lot of sushi places locally and in d.c. area. This is a very pleasant location that serves nice, fresh, firm sushi rolls and is consistently on target. I COMPLETELY disagree. The service there is incredible. I know everyone by name & vise versa. I don't know why you complain about them taking so long to make your food. There were several of you and they make everything on the spot. It's the cheapest around and the portions are the same size, if not bigger than Benihana, Sapporo etc. The seaweed salad is AMPLE and a serves as a very nice appetizer. I loved it, less expensive than Tokyo Diner and way better portions. It wasn't super speedy, but I've never seen a sushi place that was. We have been going to Akitas occasionally for several years. Tonight, I ordered two sushi rolls and an onion soup. The waiter warned me the soup was extremely hot so I began to stir it and the whole bowl of soup fell on the floor. The waiter helped to clean up and then left and returned with our sushi entrees. I told him to forget the soup since our entree was ready. When the bill came, the soup was on it. I asked him if the soup should have been removed. He checked with the female manager and she said I should be charged for the soup because it had already been served. Wow - this was surprising to me. It seemed petty and not very customer oriented. First time in Akita's I was welcomed by a very nice décor. Our waitress wasnt very friendly from the start. I felt like I got segregated from a whole section because of having a child. I ordered chicken teriyaki for my daughter which was good but the rice was cooked/over cooked/and undercooked. Our waitress came by twice but was rushing me when requesting for dinner ware. A couple came in and walked out within 5 minutes of being there due to service. Could have been better had our waitress who was also the manager had been more pleasent. We have been disappointed multiple times by Akitas but we decided to give them one more chance because they are the only place on our route home. I wasn't really feeling like sushi but I usually love miso soup and the carrot-ginger dressing on the salad so we ordered a combo meal. When I arrived to pick up the to-go order I noticed the bag was a bit light. Apparently you don't get soup and salad unless you eat in house. It doesn't say this on the web nor did the person who took the order over the phone. The older woman that other reviewers have suggested is the owner was incredibly rude and dismissive, argued with me for a few minutes, and then offered to let me place an additional order of soup and salad that I would have to pay for, even though I'd already paid for it as part of the $20 combo. I nearly asked for a refund of the whole order, and maybe I should have because the spicy tuna roll was too salty and the sashimi was really fishy. Also the shu mai sauce tasted like balsamic vinegar. From now on I'll drive the extra 20 minutes to go to just about any other sushi place in the area. Akitas isn't worth the convenience. read more

I hate to give this restaurant a 2 star, but if there are no comments, then there wont be any improvements. It was my first time at the restaurant with my family, and coming in, the atmosphere was calm and nice. We got seated and asked for some beverages while we decide for what to order. When we asked for hot tea, we were told that it isn't free (this took us by surprise because it's free in all the restaurants I've been to in the past). 15 minutes later, after we were done deciding, still no one came to us to ask to place our order..we had to go up to the front counter to ask. After we placed our order, it was literally 40+ minutes before we got our dishes. That is pretty ridiculous. After we got our $17.99 dish, the sushi rolls had the circumference of a quarter. In addition to that, 3 pieces of my sashimi were NOT FRESH! This is the part when a sashimi lover gets scared. Biting into it, the meat had a sour after taste to it, but that was only the first 2 pieces. The third piece was just tart sour and spoiled tasting to a point where I stopped eating the remaining pieces of sashimi on my plate. What a rip off of our $110.00 dinner! I was a regular customer here until recently. My friend ordered the steak hibachi which turned out to be inedible. Most of it was full of fat. The server and sour-faced woman at the front of the restaurant, when brought to their attention, said they would not correct the situation. They basically said, "too bad." The bill was brought for the steak and no adjustment was made. We said we weren't happy and they told us to not come back. I don't know that I've ever experienced such poor and rude service before. Akita's serves consistently excellent sushi. The Angel roll and the Akita's roll are my favorites, followed closely by the sushi rice bowl, which is a terrific value. The rice bowl appears on the menu as an appetizer, but I think it's perfect for lunch. My husband always orders the California roll with smoked eel on top, plus three orders of sushi. The fish is always super fresh. We live in Camp Hill and are lucky to have several sources of sushi in the area, but we stopped going to the others when we found Akita's. read more

Worst sushi experience ever. What I received was not as ordered AT ALL. The owner suggested we try it anyway and when I told her I didn't like it she became combative. She insisted it was what I ordered and more, like I should be grateful they felt the need to add mango, cheese and roe and wrap the whole thing in slimy grey snapper. Worst customer service. Never again. I took my 7 year old son for his first visit to a sushi restaurant, and he was a bit nervous to order anything. I ordered sushi, and just asked for a bowl,of rice for him so he wouldn't feel left out. The lady with a sour puss face and attitude to match refused to serve him his rice. She said they only serve rice on the other side of the restaurant. She is West Shore's own Queen of Mean. With mediocre food and a lousy attitude, I'm done forever. I had eaten at Akitas before and was impressed by both food and service. But THIS time, I was going for dinner with friends who have gobbled up sushi all across America and have strong opinions about what qualifies as really good sushi. We began our meal nibbling on edamame as we searched for just the right combination from Akita's great menu. We opted for a Katie roll, a Yummy roll, and a Tony roll. They were presented beautifully -- if I had had my camera along, I would have taken a picture. But they tasted even better than they looked! Afterward, we decided we could probably eat a little more, so we asked that the chef choose something for us. We were not disappointed with the Harrisburg roll presented to us a few minutes later. Lest you think that we ordered more because the portions are small, we decided that we really could have gotten along just fine without having added that final roll. We ended up a little too full, but we just couldn't stop eating! What's that? You wonder what the final verdict was from my two sushi aficionados? As we walked out the door, they both agreed Akitas is their new favorite sushi restaurant in North America! I couldn't agree more. read more

We've tried most of the area sushi restaurants (as well as many others in our travels), and in terms of overall food quality and freshness, Akita's ranks at the top. The fish is properly stored, and when served raw, is slightly chilled and firm in texture...not warm and mushy like others we've experienced. For most of the rolls, the portions of fish are sizeable and not overpowered by rice and seaweed (I mean, we are here to taste the fish, right?!). Akita's provides a good variety of sushi, sashimi, and assorted appetizers...the mixed fish bowl and green mussels are two of our faves! Special rolls are available and rotated throughout the year, and they also have hibachi selections. We find the atmosphere to be comfortable and the service extremely friendly. They are family owned, and if you're like us, you'll appreciate the personal touch. read more

This was the absolute worst food of any kind that I've had in years. The tiny non diver scallops were cooked until pencil erasers, shrimp curled so tightly I couldn't chew them confortably and everything was swimming in a bitter sauce that was obviously meant to hide the (lack of) flavor of the actual food. The salmon was unrecognizable as fish and the calamari was the worst I've ever had and I'm in my 50's. These mistakes are not made by first term culinary students so I can only assume that these people don't give a rats ass about their customers. We will NEVER return even if it were free. I have never written a review like this about a restaurant because I'm a chef and know what this could mean, but these were rookie mistakes or a complete lack of regard for me as a customer and I felt that it was warranted. I have always heard great things about Akitas. My own experience has yet to prove the good reviews. My first experience was marginal. My second experience I noticed that they were microwaving my miso soup. I don't microwave my food at home. Why would I want a restaurant who I am paying for the service and convenience of having my food prepared for me take such an unhealthy short cut with my food. In my opinion there's a lack of love and dedication to the quality, and it's just being lazy. In my third and most recent experience in their nicely decorated new location, I ordered edamame and miso soup to start. If I had to guess, I'd say the edamame was microwaved. As I attempted to pull the beans from the pod with my teeth, pieces of the pod continually came apart in mouth which l would pick through with my fingers to pull out of my mouth as to not swallow it with the actual bean. This was not my idea of enjoyable which is the whole purpose of dining out, to enjoy your food and the experience. I told the server about the edamame and asked if she could just remove it from my bill because I didn't want another order nor had I eaten very many of the original order before calling it quits. The owner/manager came to the table clearly without any intention of being friendly or concerned about the poor preparation of the food. I told her about my experience. She then picked up the edamame from my bowl and ate it in front of me asking me again what the problem was as she pulled the pieces of the pod that were falling apart in her mouth with her fingers. I decided at that point that if I wanted my food to be prepared with care that I would have to go somewhere else, and if there was any possibility of this happening before this incident, it was surely not going to happen after. So we left. I went to the cashier which just so happened to be the owner/manager. I told her that we would be leaving and that I wanted to pay for my tea. She rang it up and handed me the slip which totaled over $3. The most expensive tea bag in the Harrisburg area. read more

My daughter was out with nine friends that decided to go to Akitas. My daughter really didn't want anything but was told by the hostess that she had to order something or leave so she ordered a salad, but, that wasn't good enough for the hostess and she told her she had to order a meal or leave. I have often gone in restaurants and ordered sides and no meal and they always seem happy for the business. We are both vegetarians and it is often hard if not impossible to order a meal that is vegetarian. Also my daughter was with nine paying guests and the restaurant wasn't half full. I told her they all should have gotten up and left but she said a lot of them weren't even aware of what she was told. My son likes sushi and I was going to take him to Akitas to try it, but, I will never go there now. I think it was very rude to tell someone out of a group of ten that they have to leave because they didn't order enough. Where was she suppose to go when she rode there with someone else and it was a cold January night? That is just very bad business and I see there are other remarks posted about the hostess so it wasn't just a one time thing! read more

Had a family get together and all being lovers of sushi I googled a central place for all of us to meet and Akitas came up. Never heard of it before so I looked here on Yelp at reviews, looked at their menu and decided this was our place! We called ahead expressing our large party of 11 which they were happy to accommodate, tables were already set for us when we got there. It's BYOB and they were kind enough to heat up 1 of our bottles of Sake and provided and ice bucket for the other. Their menu choices are excellent, something for everyone! Their prices are so generous for the portions you receive, their ginger salad dressing is AMAZING! Not thin but like a ginger purée. The staff was so friendly and welcoming, very informative of additional points of interest my family would enjoy. Only downside: easily missed. Almost every single one of my family members drove past Akitas and had to turn around. Better and brighter signage. read more

Sushi is a favorite of mine but since the closing of our favorite sushi restaurant in May I have been unable to find a restaurant that I would return to for a second try. Dinner at Akitas this evening was horrible. The vegetable eggrolls and shrimp shumai were the same frozen food items you can purchase at any oriental food market. The eggrolls, being barely dunked into the fryer, were cold, greasy, and soggy. The shumai tasted only of the noodle coating-no shrimp flavor. I asked for some wasabi to help improve the taste and was told, "It isn't served that way." The best item was the equally flavorless miso soup, but while trying to capture one of the quarter inch squares of tofu on my spoon, some soup spilled onto the table. I was handed a napkin and had to wipe it up myself. ( OK, I am used to fine dining where the waiter does this for you,) Worse was the fact that the soggy napkin remained on the table the entire meal. One look at the New York Tuna Roll and I knew we were in trouble as there was sliced tuna on the top but ground tuna inside-never a good sign as it is indicative of a low grade of tuna. The shrimp tempura roll was nothing more than fried coating on a thin piece of shrimp surrounded by bland rice (not quality sushi rice) and nori . Both rolls were tasteless, and there was no flavor or fire to the wasabi. Finally the soy sauce is simply the least expensive not freshly brewed nor the better quality Kikkoman. Waste of time and money, and left feeling ill. read more
