Butter Chicken with a side of rice and goat biriyani
    Diana T.

Saw this pop up on DoorDash as a new restaurant and decided to give it a try. Their items seem to be more on the pricey side compared to other Indian restaurants I've tried. We ordered the goat biriyani ($17) and butter chicken ($14.50). The butter chicken came with a side of rice. The goat biriyani rice was a bit mushy and although the container was packed to the brim with it, about half of the volume was due to two large bones. Compared to other biriyani's we've had, the flavor in this ranks the lowest. The butter chicken lacked the flavor I've had at other restaurants but the chicken had good texture and was not dry. This restaurant is new and I'm sure still ironing things out. I will probably give them another try in a few months and will update my review then if I feel that it deserves more than 3 stars.

Perfect spot for some authentic and flavorful Pakastani food. Prices are reasonable and portions very generous. The server was super honest, even telling us not to order anything else until we got our main meal, so we wouldn't over order. Highly recommend the butter chicken. The style, flavors, spices were very similar to what I had in Mumbai. It was rich and tasty. The place itself is modest and homey. Felt very comfortable. We loved this place so much that we even ordered more food for lunch the next day.

    Mughlai Paratha
    Saheli D.

We had a great experience yesterday. Bought a goat biriyani and mughlai paratha. Food was ready in 30-35 mins. It was burning hot. The biriyani had 4 good chunks of goat and a few small ones which were so tender. The rice was flavorful. One could easily feed 2 people. The mughlai paratha tasted good too, not too oily and felt comforting. Would visit more for sure! Staff was super friendly!

Very dirty restaurant. No masks no gloves on employees. Employees very rude. There are much better Indian restaurants in town.

Incremental updates like refreshing the flatware, tweaking small things in the decor, and continuing to deliver the outstanding service we have come to expect go a long way. I tried the Mango Chicken this visit, and it was wonderful at spice level 3 for me. I like a kick, and the sweet flavor was paired exquisitely. We always leave with leftovers because we want to indulge ourselves again the next day; it never disappoints. I have heard people say they don't like Indian food, which I don't understand. I have extreme difficulty finding a lovelier culinary experience than Jannat, which is wild because RVA provides some of the most enticing restaurant choices I've ever had access to.

Guests can choose their preferred protein, sauce, and spice level, as well as enjoy a selection of beer, wine, and Indian Sula wines. We visited during lunchtime and partook of their lunch specials, featuring generous portions and a decent variety. I enjoyed Goat Vindaloo while wife was milder with Seafood Korma. I asked for spicy and received their level 5 (1-5). It was good, flavors and seasoning were excellent, but for truly spicy you need to ask for "True Indian Level" they are used to a bunch of Americans with tender palates! The staff is friendly and helpful with recommendations, and although the place was busy, we never felt rushed. The restaurant's clean and inviting environment adds to the positive experience. We saw a few dishes that others had ordered from the regular menu, and they looked ample and generous. So, although it seems a little pricey, it is not a bad value.

My esteemed husband lived in the RVA about 7-10 years ago, he and his family swear by their biryani. My husband is a born and raised native of Mumbai, India who attended Cooking and Hotel Management School. Needless to say, he loves to cook and is picky about his food. He makes a fabulous biryani himself, which he is always trying to perfect. He absolutely adores and loves the food at Kabab House. The flavor is incredible, it is rich in delicious seasonings. The price is totally worth the value and the best part of all, the portions are huge. I'd say this place is a hidden gem of the RVA, if you love tasty Indian Food this is the place for you.

After another day or two, we decided maybe we'd give this chain Indian place with only 3.5 stars a try, as it was only 8 minutes away, to try to offset the time we will never get back trying to decide where to eat. We were not disappointed. I walked in to find a sea of brown people, always a good sign at an Indian restaurant. The decor wasn't impressive, but I do not give a hoot. Owl I cared about was how my tongue was about to feel. We ordered way too much so we could have leftovers, another attempt at curtailing the sands in the hourglass which fell in our search for dinner. I had Methi Paneer, Desi special Biryani, and Bharuri Chat, all of which were excellent. I ordered as spicy as I could, which turned out to be unnecessary. I hope to see Indian food further permeate the zeitgeist, as it is my favorite. McTandoori Chicken when? 5 stars.

My husband and I close this restaurant to break my fast. We were greeted quickly by the hostess who led us to booth seating, and gave us menus. There was no need though, as we had already spotted the all-you-can-eat buffet. We requested only water to go with our meals; she quickly brought a carafe of chilled water and two glasses. This is a generous buffet with many selections for a complete meal, from soup and salad to dessert. There was a good variety of both meat and vegetarian options. Our FAVORITES included the fresh mixed chickpea salad (the chick peas, cucumbers, tomato, onion, parsley); lamb curry (which featured tender boneless and tender meat); rice pilau with raisins and carrots; borani badenjan (eggplant curry. Tip: drizzle yogurt on this);; bamia (okra) curry; firnee milk pudding (dessert); and the addictive dooth pati chai (spiced milk tea). There were also some items that we didn't enjoy as much but were still good. For instance, the chicken kofta meatballs, while nicely spiced, were very dry. And, the nan bread was disappointing. (There were also many additional good choices on the buffet that are not listed here). The ambiance in the restaurant is comfortable, with many paintings and decorations from Afghanistan. Some tables are in a side room, ideal for small groups or privacy. We noticed, but didn't visit, a downstairs shop with Afghan carpets and other goods. Plus, there's a shop on the side that sells groceries. Parking is plentiful and free. The lunch buffet was $17.99 each, plus VA sales tax (6.3%), city meals tax (5.3%), credit card service free (3.5%), and tip (variable). There are cheaper options available if you order from the menu. We would return when next in Charlottesville.

I stopped in on the later side as Charlottesville's restaurant scene has a lot of early closings. Seeking a vegetarian combo, I ended up with a salad and a mix of potatoes, okra, and chickpeas, which were clearly cooked earlier and served cafeteria style. The dishes are vaguely reminiscent of Indian stylings but are not spicy. Perhaps this is why this place oversalts food (I've seen this with other Afghan places as well); I hate having to drink so much water afterwards. An herbal tea was an interesting flavor, and I got a decent amount of food for the money. Given the limited options for vegetarian food on a Friday night, I was satisfied, but the food could have been better.

Tulsi feels extravagant and upscale from the moment you enter. The lighting was lovely, each of the different lamps exquisitely lining the walls provided a golden hue throughout the space. We were seated immediately with no reservations. The atmosphere was quiet and cozy, great for couples to catch up and talk about their days or get to know one another. Our server was attentive and polite. He gave us time to peruse the menu at our leisure, while he brought out the gratis before-the-meal appetizer. It was like a crispy naan with three distinctly different sauces. It really was quite delicious. I ordered the Chicken Konkani and my partner had the Chicken Curry. As connoisseurs of a great many Indian restaurants, we quite enjoyed the entrees at Tulsi. I savored the coconut creaminess of the Konkani. I also tried my partner's curry, and it had a rich aromatic flavor as well. We didn't try dessert because we were simply too stuffed by the end. The choices were almost tempting enough to persuade me, but we refrained. Tulsi is for lovers, just like Virginia, so we were in great company. I wholeheartedly recommend giving this spot a chance. We will definitely be back to partake in the fine dining experience on offer here.
