My go-to for Indian food in Richmond. Service is always warm and friendly, even though not always fast, but I go for the food. You'll start your meal with a small plate of naan as well as three sauces to dip it in, while looking over the menu. I like their paneer pakora and vegetable samosas. For dinner, I've tried many of their curries and like paneer korma best, with naan and raita. The restaurant is warm and cozy and I've never had to wait long for a table. read more

TLDR - flavorful Indian spot. Be courageous and ask your waiter to recommend something new! Food - the food is always excellent! Plenty of sauce and full of flavor. Today we ordered the chicken tikka masala and, at the recommendation of our waiter, the chili chicken. Both were good but we were surprised by how much we enjoyed the chili chicken. Our 8 month old enjoyed the rice with sauce from our meals on top. We ordered a spice level 2 so it wouldn't be too spicy for her and it turned out not to be spicy as at all. If we weren't sharing with her, we probably would have gotten a 3. The garlic naan is chef's kiss. You really can't go without ordering some. I was disappointed that the portion was only 4 or 5 small pieces - a bit pricey considering it's $4 a basket. My ONLY complaint about the food (and why I couldn't give this restaurant 5 stars) is that the dinner portions just aren't large enough for the price. My husband and I weren't even hungry when we arrived for dinner and neither of us were full by the end of our meal (and that's after two baskets of garlic naan)! There either needs to be more protein in the dinner portion or they should start offering a side along with the rice. Vibe - traditional Indian restaurant. Pleasantly quiet and rarely crowded. We've gone a few times for an earlier dinner (before 7) and there's usually only a few other people there. That said, it was still lively enough where I felt comfortable bringing our 8 month old. Service - the staff are always so kind! I went when I was 9 months pregnant and our waiter brought us a complimentary dessert and told us the sweetest story about how his neighbor would bring his wife dessert when she was pregnant. It was so thoughtful and heart warming! Takeout - we've only done takeout once and we were disappointed :( we got the lunch special and were surprised by how small the portion was considering we had eaten in for lunch several times and had a different experience. We love Anokha so we've been too afraid to try takeout again and have stuck to eating in instead. Anohka is one of my favorite lunch spots in Short Pump. For $13-$16 during lunch, you get a soup or salad, entree, naan, basmati rice, veggie side dish, and a dessert. It's enough food for 2 meals. This one is consistently excellent! Last night, we had a group of 10. Service was perfect. We had table apps, drinks and dinner. Everything was timed well and service was attentive; drinks stayed full, plates cleared promptly. The staff here doesn't seem to turn over. We had an assortment of appetizers and they were all good. By the time we ordered dinner, I was full. However, I opted for Chicken Patia, which has curry, mango, and scallions. It was so good with flavorful rice and naan. They ask for spice level, so I'm always able to adjust, since I prefer mild. A few of the apps had higher spice, but I still enjoyed them. My husband was thrilled to eat my leftovers. read more

Yum! I was gifted a door dash gift card and was craving curry. I've passed Anika a million times when I've visited Starbucks but haven't water here yet. A search of delivery curry i]optioned netted Anokha, so I decided to order. Lunch was for my daughter and me, so I got a butter chicken for her, vindaloo for me, naan, raita and a cucumber salad. Both curries were good, the naan...yum! And huge portion! I usually go to Lehja but now I know the small portions and high prices are due to the mall location. Anokha easily beats out Lehja for value and taste. The only thing I didn't like and wouldn't order again is the cucumber tomato salad. It was just boring cut up veggies. I want to try Anokha in person soon instead of take out. My dasher delivered the food, which leaked most of the saucy goodness on the paper at and my porch. Not fun to clean up. read more

Phenomenal - every single time! If you like flavorful, scrumptious food, Anokha will not disappoint. Since we cook for ourselves a LOT, we've become selective about what we eat and where. When we eat at Anokha (approximately every other month): a) we try a variety of dishes new to our pallets b) we're delighted by & grateful for the explosion of flavors we can't cook for ourselves. The only downside is IF one has leftovers, the ridges on the inside of the main entrée takeout container hog the flavorful sauce in which the entreé was cooked. The vegetable sampler appetizer was pretty good. Especially liked the vegetable pakora. The chutney's were good, which isn't always the case. For entrees, we ordered vegetable korma and paneer tikka masala. They gave a free order of mattar with our entrees which was nice, it was pretty tasty. The paneer wasn't the best consistency or taste and you can pretty much tell what each vegetable was. The best indian restaurants you can't completely tell which vegetables are what in my opinion. This all made for decent leftovers, however! Lehja is still the only place around RVA that belongs in my top-tier Indian restaurants list. Since it was one of the first I had around here and saw other highly rated ones I thought I'd find a few good ones, but they've pretty much all been duds so far and I fear it's time to stop shopping around. read more

We ordered two starters, chili paneer and lahsooni gobhi, and the biryani main course. All the items were in front of us in five minutes. The food wasn't even hot. It was somewhere between lukewarm and cold. I had a few bites and had to stop eating because the taste was off, and my gut told me to stop. I went here with a friend of mine on the suggestion of another friend. They had stated that it was one of their favorite Indian places in the Richmond area. They said it was right up there with another one of my favorites so I decided to try it out. It was raining/snowing, and when I walked in the floor was extremely wet, and I almost fell. I do recall seeing a sign, but didn't expect it to be that slippery. We sat down and ordered drinks. Nothing fancy, a water and some soda. As a recall, a different person came to get our order so we ordered. We ordered a couple of appetizers. A roasted cauliflower, gobhi and the vegetable sampler. They were both extremely good. We asked for more sauces and raita three times. We also ordered the garlic naan. I ordered a favorite, chicken tikka masala, but I don't recall my friend ordered. When I ordered, they asked me how spicy. I asked what their scale was and I think I recall them saying one to six and I ordered a three. My friend wasn't asked. So she said can I get mine like medium and the waiters response was it's usually stars at about a four. We asked and there seemed to be no option to get it less spicy? Unfortunately, since every Indian restaurant here has their own scale,there was no way to know how spicy that was. Her thinking was that it was just over medium, that it should be OK. When we got the food, it came out in a reasonable amount of time and the presentation looked nice. A larger portion would be more acceptable for the price. I could already smell the heat coming off of my friend's dish. Mine was okay, nothing fancy. It wasn't bad but it didn't really stand out. Not a lot of flavor. I tried hers, and it was extremely hot, almost to the point where I didn't wanna eat it nor did she. Overall, service was good. There appeared to be multiple people assisting, which is nice. At the end of the meal, my friend said it was good but the waiter was staring at her the entire time. So overall, I would recommend with those caveats to keep in mind. Chicken tikka masala and the tandoori were all white meat. Would have been fine if it were cooked well, but both dishes were dry and hard to eat. Chicken tandoori had minimal seasoning. The food is fine if you are new to Indian cuisine, but the menu is quite unexciting for Indian food lovers. Lunch is served with a choice of soup or salad. I chose soup only to receive a cup of warm tomato water. Chicken 65, Hara Bhara Kebab, lamb Rogan josh, and bhindi masala were tasty but nothing noteworthy, The Lassooni Gobi was breaded and fried cauliflower... too heavy. We were really feeling like Indian cuisine so decided to go back to Anokha. We absolutely love this place! My husband and I are vegan and they will make almost any of the curries vegan for you. They do have 2/3 curries on the menu that are already vegan too. The Naan isn't vegan but you can ask for another type of bread that is. I had the Channa Masala (see pic), and it was sooooo good! I never manage to eat the whole thing usually because they bring a lot out in a bowl! I demolished the whole thing! It was so morish and the Chickpeas were perfectly cooked. The drink in the picture is a mocktail (Non alcoholic) which my husband and daughter enjoyed. We had Vegetable Samosa as a starter (already Vegan), it was so good! This place was fantastic! They were able to seat a table of 6 walking in on a Saturday night very quickly. They were busy. They have an extensive menu and drink list. I was doing dry January and they even had some mocktails, which I appreciated. They bring you some naan with three dipping sauces for an appetizer. Then for dinner we all had different dishes. I personally had the lamb biryani. REALLY GOOD. I eat Indian food quite often and like spicy food. Their spicy scale is 1-6. They say 4 is American hot and 5 is Indian hot. So I picked 4. It was quite spicy. I had to cool it down with a yogurt sauce. I would absolutely be back here. Super impressed! My fiancee and I have been on an Indian food kick lately and decided to stop by Anokha one weekend for their lunch special. After a return here in a following week, I feel obligated to write a review. --Food: Everything I've had has been fantastic. The first time I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala as that is my boring yet delicious go-to, and Anokha's is as good as any I've had. The second time I ordered Chicken Vindaloo, and this was great as well. You can specify the level of spicy that you would like, and while I normally end up at the hottest at most places, I chose 4/5, or "Hot", to start off with in case 5/5 turned out to be a grave mistake. "Hot" has a nice spice, but is in no way too spicy, so if you're a lover of spicy food, you won't have any trouble. The lunch combos come with a soup, rice, naan, a side dish, and a dessert, so you won't leave hungry. Anokha's naan is a bit breadier and less crispy than other places I've been in RVA, but it is in no way less tasty. The soups have both been good. I recall a lentil soup the first time and a coconut chili lime the second. I won't pretend to know the names of the side dishes, but both were good. A huge surprise was the dessert (both times) in the form of gulab jamun, which are these delightfully sweet milk solid sweets in a sugary (maybe saffron) syrup. You just get one in your lunch combo, but I probably could have eaten a dozen of these, easy. --Cost: The lunch prices are super affordable, especially given the amount of food / courses you get. Most lunches are $9 - $11, and we've always left stuffed. --Atmosphere: The interior is nice. It manages to retain a casual crowd but feels a little more upscale than some other places. I felt a little under dressed with shorts and a t-shirt, but that's how I roll. --Service: Never had a problem. Despite there being a mostly full house both times we've went, food comes out reasonably quickly. --Overall: I love Anokha. I haven't been to all the Indian places RVA has to offer, but it's definitely one of my top 2 places, along with Lemon. If you like Indian food, I'd say it at least warrants a try. read more
