That's until we met some of the miserable ladies behind the food counter at Super Khorak. I waited there for 30 minutes for my food. At one point, I turn and see the employee who took my order whispering in another one's ear while looking at me. I told my partner something was going on. I thought maybe they burned our food. Finally we went to the other end of the counter, realizing there was another pick up section. One of the employees asks for my number. I search my pockets and realize I've lost the receipt. I tell her. She rolls her eyes and storms off. Comes back and barks "what did you order?" I tell her. She says "I called your number 10 times." They knew it was our food! They saw us standing there for more than 30 minutes. What the heck? Then she goes over to some new lady behind the cash whispering while gawking at me. At this point I was at my wit's end. I go over there and say 'excuse me. Is there a problem.' New lady smiles and says "no, no problem at all." I finally get my food. But this whole experience made me lose my appetite and ruined what was up to that point an amazing day. Don't bother. Go next door to Super Arzan. Hopefully they won't ruin your day.

Trupti seems to be that secret place that isn't reviewed much but has a stream of South Indian shoppers who make the pilgrimage to this place for their spices. Trupti has a factory in the back where fresh spices are roasted and packaged before they are either brought to the front and sold in store or sent off under private label. I was told by staff that restaurants make their own blends here just for themselves. The place is a family run business with their own blends as well. As you can see from all my photos, I picked up A LOT! I waited till I opened some of these before posting a review. What I noticed right away is that the spices smell really fresh. I compared it to some McCormack spices I just got from metro and Trupti wins by a long shot. The roasted spices smell amazing. We went way back to Kensington Market in the 80s. Family run for years they have the freshest and best selection of spices around. If they don't have it on the shelf the odds are they have it in the back and will be more than happy to pack you up some. Since they supply many restaurants and pretty well a majority of the Indian markets. They also have a great selection of nuts and all kinds of flour. Very friendly staff, helpful, just good people. It elicits debates among chefs as to which herbs (tareh, parsley, scallion, cilantro, shanbalileh, etc.) and beans to include or exclude. Debates aside, it sure was tasty! Couldn't find a menu in store, either the prices really fluctuate daily on dishes or they make up random pricing. The jury is out in that one! I did note what their offerings were without looking at a menu. Shish kabob charcoal. Halal fresh meats. Ready to eat hot food. Spaghetti with lamb. Beef with safran rice. Chicken leg with cranberry rice. Lamb shank with green rice. Sultan with green rice. Waziri with cranberry rice. Khorma zabzi. Lobya polo, rice with ground veal and green beans. Ghimeh stow. Everyone was very friendly and there were many specialty items that are hard to find in regular supermarkets. Not all branches do food - for example the Mississauga branch doesn't. Got a sugar cane for only $3. It came with options to add lime and/or ginger, which I declined. It seemed to have a bit of a sour edge, so it probably had lemon added. It was good, though it wasn't cold. On the flip side, that meant it wasn't cut with ice either. It was a bit small, though it was described on the receipt as "12 oz. Now bigger qty" so I guess it used to be even smaller. The paan (stuffed betel nut leaf) was actually pretty good - moist & a good mix of flavours, with a maraschino cherry pinned onto its outside with a toothpick. Masala butter pav was pretty good though the bun was soft & not crispy. Small samosa (for which they undercharged me - 20 cents though the menu said it was 25 cents to get you to buy 5 for $1) was actually pretty big. It was ok; though pre-made it still had some crispness. Batataka vada was large but plain & neither crispy nor warm so it wasn't good. The "jumbo" vada pav came in a burger bun. The patty was not crispy because it was pre-made & cold but it still tasted OK. The chutneys were nice. The patty used potato that was a bit coarse but still tasted ok; compressed into the bun the chunkiness of the potato was not so noticeable. The spiciness of the dish hit in the aftertaste especially hard. Some items are only available in "summer", but there's summer and there's summer; when I went sugar cane juice was available but not the ice golla.
