A true hidden gem in downtown Ferndale. Al's is a family owned business that serves breakfast and lunch. We tried the breakfast sandwich and eggs Benedict on our most recent visit. They were both delicious, fresh and generously portioned. The ham on the Benedict was tender and slightly smoky which melded well with the hollandaise. The breakfast sandwich consisted of egg, sausage, lettuce, tomato and red onion on sourdough toast. Both were accompanied by hash browns that were seasoned perfectly. Yummy and filling. The staff was friendly and kept our coffee cups filled throughout our visit. Definitely a place to try if you're in the mood for a low key tasty meal. read more

This place is a great addition to the breakfast/lunch scene in Ferndale. We lost Denny's, Babe's Place and Bob's Burgers & Brew years ago (granted 2 of those places needed to go) and it's nice having another place for those meals in town. Al's is tiny, a dozen tables packed together in a storefront of about 400 sf. It's a seat yourself kind of place and there's only one waitress. The menu is fairly simple- breakfast and lunch, just the basics. They serve good coffee- Tony's and service is great. I had the Homemade Corned Beef Hash, by far the best around, lots of big chunks of tasty corned beef and fresh homemade hashbrowns, with the freshest, most perfectly cooked over easy eggs I've ever eaten. Hubby had the Classic Meat and Eggs with hashbrowns, he likes his eggs Sunny Side Up and they were perfect. Great little place, I can see that it probably gets packed on weekends but for a Monday it was fine I will be back for lunch! read more

This clean and cute little diner is only open until 2 o'clock but the food is great. I highly recommend the corn beef breakfast. Who ever is in the back, they are simply the best at poached eggs. Went for breakfast today. Found the place very noisy. I don't need to listen to a phone conversation from a table two away or hear about someones trouble with their grown kids. Waitress (can you say that nowdays?)was right there no problem and took our order. Food was quick coming but wasn't really hot, kinda luke warm but we put up with it as the place was packed and they were busy. It would have tasted a lot better if it was hot. Portions were above average, no complaints there. Did find it expensive, $12.95 for corned beef hash and $7 for biscuits and gravy, $2.30 for coffee. My boyfriend didn't like his country fried steak. He said it was chewy and tasteless. So I got my food to go and ate later. I got a cheeseburger. Took three bites of it and I threw it away. Our visiting guest is a big fan of small-town diners and our first visit to Al's was fantastic!! The small space is clean, cozy and very inviting. Late breakfast at Al's Diner. The chicken fried steak, hash browns and gravy is some of the best I've ever had eating out. The eggs were cooked to perfection and the service was absolutely amazing. But halfway through my meal I heard someone behind me 'baby talking' and there were no children in the diner A man had his dog sitting in a chair at the table and was feeding it from his plate. A service animal is a highly trained, well mannered dog that is alert to its owners every need. This was just yet another pet that is being passed off as a 'service' dog. I have pets, I've lived on a ranch, I'm not opposed to animals but... they don't come in my kitchen or get on my counters. I did leave a note for the owner..This is not social shaming it's a community service notice. If you don't have a problem with animals in restaurants it's a wonderful place to go. If you prefer not to eat with other people's pet hairs flying around and potentially in your food I would suggest other alternatives read more

I'm so excited we have another place to eat in Ferndale! I was a big fan of Big Als in Blaine, so when I found out the previous owner was opening a place in Ferndale I couldn't wait for it to open! And it didn't disappoint. It is very cute and intimate inside. They were pretty busy since they had just opened. But the staff was very friendly and doing really well for how busy they were. My mom and I both ordered the biscuits and Gravy. It's one of my favorite foods. It was so delicious! And a really big portion I couldn't finish it all. They give you plenty of gravy which is a must. The prices are really reasonable too. There is not much parking on the street, I mean hey it's Ferndale. But they have a big sign on the side of the building that says parking, so turn down the alley and there is lots of parking in the back. I can't wait to go back and try more food off the menu. Or just get the biscuits and gravy again haha. (drool) read more

The food was great, but the best part was our waitress; the wife and I had a hungry/fussy little two year old and the waitress was so helpful and attentive to our needs.
