Nice spot to grab a drink but I don't get the hype on the Florentine steak. I thought the steak was too chewy and lacked flavor but perhaps that's how its suppose to be?? The couple next to us had the same complaint. They were only able to finish half before throwing in the towel. read more

I went here on my first night/meal in Italy and it was amazing! I went with my friend around 7 which is pretty early for italian time and was able to snag a table. We started off with some prosecco and small appetizers that they call chicherri(?). Super yummy and delicious. I especially liked the sundried tomato with goat cheese. For our main course, we had the steak for two which was also amazing. They didn't ask how we liked it and it was cooked to a medium rare. Thus, if you would like your meat more cooked I would let them know. Overall, very delicious and would love to go back. When we were walking out, we could definitely see a lot of the locals hanging out of the boats drinking and eating the small bites. Definately a good atmosphere. read more

This place was packed every night we were in Venice. We only had wine and chiccetti here but came multiple nights and it was phenomenal. Fabulous place for a drink and people watching. We made a reservation for dinner but ended up cancelling after I learned it's a steak house. I'm a vegetarian and while I was in Venice I would eat bits of cured meats because I had to try chiccetti. But I couldn't get on board with steak. In any case, the small bites alone are worth coming for. read more

The atmosphere was great. Right along a small canal. Food was good but not great. Our waiter was the worst. Unfriendly and unhelpful. We sat at a table for 20 minutes before he took our order and meanwhile he waited on others who were seated after us. He seemed annoyed when we asked him to explain the menu. When we paid they seemed bothered that we didn't pay in cash. Overpriced in my opinion due to the poor service and not the food quality. If you pay cash you get offered limoncello after dinner otherwise not. read more

Our family is visiting Venice and concerned that we'd not enjoy the food here. Enter Al Timon. Delicious steak for two, complete with amazing potatoes, grilled veg, and tasty sauce for the steak. They also serve up fun Italian tapas --- I recommend the arrancini. The best part is that the vibe is that of a local bar and restaurant --- a neighborhood spot. If my favorite bar was in Italy, this would be it! Stay for dinner! The music and the wood walls both contributed to the amazing ambience. The place was full and energetic all night! We went to this restaurant despite some of the bad reviews they got about their treatment of tourists. Be aware the bad reviews are real! They will treat you unfriendly. Unfortunately for us we were stuck inside because of a thunderstorm. Not one of them said hello, offered anything, made any contact what so ever. We wanted to get some drinks and appetizers while we wait, were told they can do drinks only. We said ok and ordered wine, and offered our credit card. The man behind the bar said cash only, even though another person paid with a credit card a few minutes earlier. I'd have understood if he said there is a minimum, which apparently there is based on other reviews I found, but he went straight to cash only. Cichetti are tasty, fresh, and cheap (always get the baccala); and the spritz was perfect. The bartender wasn't the nicest, and he made sure to serve every Venetian first, but I can't say I blame him for not wanting tourists in what is obviously a young locals bar. Take a stroll off the main streets and head to Al Timon. It has a great mix of local and travelers that want to feel the pulse of Venice. Chill on the dock in the canal and have a drink with some tapas as you wait for your table. Order the steak for two and you will not be disappointed. Excellent cicchetti and cheap drinks! This place offers cicchetti snacks for 1 Euro and cheap house wine for 1.50 Euro. Anyone who fell for the "70 Euro meat platter" or "steak" scam is the type of person who would buy speakers out of the back of a white van in the United States. I would advise speaking at least a few words of Italian to the staff, even if you struggle. It goes a long way. This place is off the beaten path for sure. It is situated in the heart of the "Jewish Ghetto" so it is a local bar and you should try to act like a local. We saw an obnoxiously American couple come in, wearing their college team shirts and hats, look around, snub their noses and walked out. If you are that type of traveler then this place isn't for you. However, if you do make the trip over to Al Timon, greet the barstaff with Ciao or Buengornio and know how to ask "how much is the house wine" you will be fine. Treat yourself to the 1 Euro cicchetti snacks and 1.50 Euro "vino rosso della casa" and you will have a wonderful time. We stuffed ourselves, established a solid buzz and walked out paying about 25 Euros for the both of us. The barstaff was friendly and quick as they took care of all their customers. Just be advised, this is a place for locals so respect the locals and they will respect you. read more

Everything looked good from the outside, and beyond. Mentioned on almost every list of recommended restaurants in Venice, Al Timon benefits from a solid online reputation. The problem that particular evening was appalling service, a complete lack of customer focus, and an abysmal understanding of the restaurant business. A long story short: nonexistent greetings (you are welcomed with a "Yes?"), vague indication as to whether you'll ever get a table (reservations are not possible), a one hour wait on the sidewalk in the cold, regular eye roll when you hint at asking for the status ("I SAW YOU"), more waiting, highly suspicious table assignment to people you haven't seen waiting, more waiting. So much tension, so I go to the loo, and as a reappear in the dining room one minute later, I get told that "sorry, I couldn't find you, I gave your table. I have been looking for you for 30mn". Scandal, shouts, general non sense ensues, customers take my side, waiter suggests I should leave, etc.... Now. I have been to countless restaurants and of course have seen this situation before. You're a overworked waiter, this happens and you find a way to fix it, and you try to avoid lying. But not that night, and not at Al Timon. The general tone was rude, devoid of any politeness, and there was no attempt to fix the situation. I was asked to leave. But for me the biggest problem was to have to explain to my 10 year old why after waiting in the cold for one hour, we had to go. There was not one single attempt from the waiters to help out, to apologize for their mistake, to offer a sandwich, nothing. I felt insulted. I can't say if the food at Al Timon is good or not. But I am pretty sure it is not worth the wait, not worth the money. read more

Came here for dinner on my family trip's first night in Venice. It was a little unexpected as it's more of a pub/dive bar than a sit down restaurant with service. Don't get me wrong, it's a great place to be if you're going with friends and willing to sit anywhere; including chilling on a boat with your plate of cichetti and glass or spritz. However, if you want a nice sit down dinner, I wouldn't advise. First of all, it's tough to get a table/seat. It's a first come first serve, on your own type of venue. The waiter (yes I meant singular) isn't much help at all because there is only 1 on a busy Saturday night. You'll be waiting for service the whole night and will feel lucky if you're able to get the waiter/busboy bring you some ketchup/more sauce for your fries. We ordered the cichettis from the bar and I definitely recommend the chicken liver/pate, and the raw meat tar tars. They're only 1 Euro! As for entrees- steak for 2, lamb chops and lasagna and it was delicious. The lamb chops were slightly overcooked, but the yogurt sauce it came with complimented it very well (if only they had brought more over :[ ) Steak was perfectly done medium rare. Every bite felt as if it were melting in my mouth. The lasagna was deliciously creamy and rich. A little too rich for mi mama, but perfect for my sister and I. All in all, great food with mediocre service. read more

Very casual bar with a menu if you're hungry. We tried the chechetti and dolci and both were delicious. Tiny place with only a few tables. Seems to always be hopping. Only one bridge and a few doors down from Boscolo. If you want a local (non-tourist) experience go here. Got yelled at by one of the bartenders and asked to leave for not having a glass of wine in my hand while sitting outside waiting for my boyfriend who was inside paying for the overpriced mediocre glasses of wine. I took my 15 year old son last Thursday and he said it was the best steak he has ever had (he is a bit of a foodie and knows his steak, so this is a huge compliment!) The steak was surrounded by fresh grilled vegetables (spinach, peppers, zucchini, broccoli, cauliflower) as well as seasoned chick peas and fresh cut potatoes/fries. This platter was enough to share and we almost couldn't finish it all. The steak does come out med-rare, but the waiter offered for us to try and would gladly take it back to re-grill to perfection, which it was! The service was great as I saw in a few reviews, it did not get the credit it deserved. We arrived just after 7pm and did not have reservations. The waiter told us to wait a few minutes and he will have a table ready for us. He was the only one working the tables from taking drink/food orders to serving and clearing the tables. We felt he did an amazing job and was attentive to our needs. The only thing I would change would be to have the option to add a tip at time of credit card payment. I did not have any cash with me and was only able to pay by card. I would have liked to have given our waiter a gracious tip.
