I'd been craving pastitsio (Greek lasagna) and moussaka for a while, and after searching around, I finally found a few places that served them -- Al Wadi being one of them. It's not exactly close to me, but the menu convinced us to give it a try. My husband went with the buffet and enjoyed the variety -- hummus, gyro, salad, and pita bread -- and felt the price was a great value for what was offered. I ordered the pastitsio. It wasn't quite the same as the versions I've had in Chicago, where I've enjoyed both homemade and restaurant-made versions. This one was still enjoyable, but not as flavorful as I remembered. The béchamel sauce was creamy, though I felt it needed a bit more seasoning, and the tomato sauce leaned a little too soupy for my taste. I took the moussaka to go. It had a very similar flavor profile to the pastitsio, but instead of pasta, it featured layers of eggplant and ground beef. It was comforting and hearty, though the flavors felt a bit repetitive between the two dishes. The cheese bread that came with both the pastitsio and moussaka was really good -- warm, soft, and a great pairing with the meal. It has been a long time since I have been to Alwadi. I used to live in Bedford and came here often. I am happy to report, it is just as good as I remembered. The food was fresh and tasty. The service friendly, and the prices are still very good. Also the portions are plentiful. The kabob dinner comes with three skewers in top of sauteed veggies, rice, and a salad. The dressing was a bit thin today and ran off the lettuce but it is tasty. We also ordered the hummus and the texture was spot on. I have never come for the lunch buffet, but I need to put it on the list of things to do. read more

Could have been better if they gave me the CHICKEN SHAWARMA that I ordered instead of the BEEF SHAWARMA that it turned out I did not like once I got home with my take out. Lesson learned. I wish this restaurant would get their web site working correctly so I could order online because having to call in a order and now learning their people might not get it right is making me think twice before ordering from them again. This family run restaurant and middle eastern market is a gem. Our family and I have been dining here for 20 years and they are just consistently great Greek and Middleastern food. They are still open for takeout and please stop in to support them. I just had takeout from here last night and it was just superb, with left overs. Right now it's a husband and wife team only keeping things alive, but they keep cranking out mama's Lebanese recipes.
