I decided to support a local business and came to the shop to solve my lost key issue for my mailbox When I came in the man behind the counter stayed sitting on his stool, which on the other side of the corner and blocked visually from me. So I stooped over the counter finally and asked him if he could help me. He was very gruff and asked what I wanted I told him I needed a key for my mailbox. He asked me to show me what he needed. I didn't know if he wanted me to come around the counter because he wasn't getting up. It didn't seem appropriate to go on the other side of the counter, so I stayed where I was and didn't know if he was being funny or what his issue was. And then I showed him the different parts to the box that I need and he said I would need a whole new lock to put into the box. So he gets up and gets the package of the set that I need. It shows a price on the package, but he said that's not the right price. I asked him so what is the right price and it was about a dollar more so. I said that's fine. I just wanted to get what I needed and leave at that point. Because he wasn't very pleasant at all. I told him I could pay with my debit card. So he had the machine in front of him and told me to tap my card which I did. Then I was surprised when he asked me for my pin number . Thank goodness, I wasn't intimidated and gave it to him. Instead, I leaned over Covered the number number area with my hand and put in my code myself. I just thought it was so odd and rude of him to ask me for my pin . I'll never go back there again. He seemed very bothered to have me in his shop, was so reluctant to get up from his stool, and it was very awkward when he asked me for my pin number. read more

I must've tried at least 3 times to get my keys made at Home Depot. All 3 times the keys didn't work with their automated AND person operation of AN automated key maker. AND Home Depot couldn't make a special mailbox key. So I finally wised up to the idea of going to a REAL key maker/ smith, just the good ole days with father as a child. It's been so long, I wasn't sure that they even existed anymore. But here this place is. A throwback to the 1980s if you will. The place definitely has that run down feel where REAL people do REAL work fixing things. The gentleman who helped me appeared tired and ill but nonetheless he soldiered on with basically one hand made like 3 sets of keys for me. And they ALL work!!! [applause] These people use the good ole grinder and have hundreds and hundreds of stock key blanks. AND they are cheaper than Home Depot. I have been coming to this shop for years to get variety of keys and other things repaired. However, never again am I coming back to support this store. I walked in on a Monday (9/16) afternoon looking to get some keys made for an old classic vehicle. As I step inside there was a gentlemen sitting down at the chairs next to the front entrance. I didn't pay attention to who was sitting there because I automatically assumed it was a customer. As I waited patiently at the front desk awaiting to be helped, yet no one attends to the front to assist me. About 3 minutes passes that no one has attended the front desk, I decide to turn around and leave; as I do, I realize the man sitting down is a man I recognized as one of the owners/workers who I have dealt with in the past. I asked him if he could assist me, and he just threw up his hands in the air with a gesture of "what do you want" manner without saying a word to me. I asked him again if he could help me and he just proceeded to throw up his hands in the same gesture without saying a word to me. I asked him if he could help me make a key and he proceeded to just look at me while scowling and said maybe if you bring me the key. That's when I just said thanks and left. A shithole shop. Unorganized junk everywhere. Horrible encounter with the owner today. I have come to support this mom and pop for years, only for the owner to berate me today for unintentionally "ignoring him" because I was having a conversation on my airbuds. I apologized and explained to him it was unintentional, but he continued to insult and berate me repeatedly. The way he spoke to me was completely uncalled for. I understand he was frustrated because he felt that I was being rude, but it was out of pocket for him to continue talking so much shit to me even after I tried to move forward with making a key. He blatantly said he wouldn't accept my apology, told me GTFO, and called me a f***** idiot. Words were exchanged because he couldn't contain his anger and thought he could talk to me however he wanted. NO, DO NOT EVER TREAT ANYONE THE WAY YOU HAVE TREATED ME TODAY. Not a customer, not another person, over a stupid misunderstanding. Mind you, I can go to Pagano's for key copying, but I've always come here to support. I needed to duplicate keys to an Architectural mailbox and found out after a bit of trial and error that the only way to do this was to order blank keys from the manufacturer and have a locksmith perform the duplication. After my blanks arrived, I brought them over to Alameda Repair Shop and I was thoroughly blown away by how quick and easy the process was to get the keys copied. Cute little place. I came here to make a couple of copies of keys. The guy was very quick and pleasant. Because my keys were below $10, he was super nice and told me that I can pay him tomorrow. I thought that was super trusting and sweet of this guy to do. But luckily Bank of America is just a street down so I was able to grab some cash and make sure this guy gets paid! Joe came and rekeyed all my locks after my kid was robbed at gunpoint for his ebike with his keys (and our house keys on it!) and wallet (with his ID and our address on it!). They were gonna come same day/night but my schedule didn't allow for it and asked for them to come next day and they did. In addition to great service, I had a really good conversation with Joe. Chris was terrific when I called just before 4pm after locking myself out; told me he'd have someone to me in 20 minutes to fix. Joe arrived in 19 minutes(!), with an amazing set of tools I'd never heard of, to try to jiggle lock open. When that didn't work, he also had a replacement kit on the van that was a perfect match to color & style of deadbolt, so was able to fix without need for return visit. Joe was also able to match new door lock to existing key for deadbolt, and with another amazing tool on the van, cut 2 additional matching keys at only $5 each! - far less expensive than $25 per key elsewhere! read more

I went there with a key for my hood latches after being told by several different places that there was no suitable blank. The fellow/owner of ARS took the key, dug around his shop and guess what, I walked out of there with 4 additional, usable keys that saved me a lot of money to replace the hood latches. I had two keys duplicated at a larger chain store: they didn't work. I went back and gave them another try: again, didn't work. I went back a second time to get a refund. It may have to do with their key blanks not being from the lock manufacturer. Anyway, I went to this place and requested blanks from the manufacturer (which they had). The guy made the two copies almost impossibly fast. I got home: they worked fine. I'll just go here from now on when I need keys duplicated. read more

Then I went to our local Pagano's Hardware and they didn't carry the blanks as well. They referred me to Alameda Repair Shop and said they would have the blanks. The shop is a simple, old neighborhood business that dates back to 1901. It specializes in locks, keys, glass and window repair, tool sharpening, lawn mower and small engine services. Key blanks of various sizes line the walls behind the counter and I knew I came to the right place. Joe, the owner, greeted me and asked what I needed. He got the blanks and cut the keys I requested. The service was quick and the prices were reasonable, $2.25 each for the single cuts and $3.50 each for the double cuts. Joe and I talked about mail and package security and the attempted break-in at his shop. This was a neighborhood business experience where you shoot the breeze with the store owner.
