My initial review (which is an opinion, of course): "This location is apparently a former Comfort Inn, but if so, it was expelled sometime in the late 90's. The first hint is when you check in in mid afternoon, and no one is there - just a phone to call for someone. Apparently this is a 1 man operation most of the time and he is cleaning rooms. The owner is very personable and accommodating, but the property is stuck in the dark ages. Let me count the problems: The beds are old, low, and uncomfortable. There is no refrigerator, microwave, flat screen tv, or a free breakfast of any kind. The tv service is Dish Network, and it has many channels, if you can figure out how to find them. The room was clean, but the towels are thin and scarce. For $80 a night, you should drive to Iowa City (about 25 mi.) and stay in a modern place." This made us feel like we were not allowed to sleep in the beds or take showers in the room we had booked. After seeing the room we understood why. He then charged us an extra $10 dollars for not booking directly through him. His rooms were dingy, filthy and smelled horrendous.There were stains from lazy housekeeping on the carpets and the sheets looked like they were never changed between guests. When we checked in and questioned the extra charges, he said "if budget is a problem you can go to Motel 6" in hindsight we should have. Obviously this Owner has never learned that in a hospitality environment you meet lots of people you don't know and everyone deserves polite service. All night we heard banging and walking up an down the hall ways, when my husband went to look the "owner" seemed to be lurking around the our hallway all night, a lot more than we felt comfortable with. We appeared to be the only guests in the hotel. What was he listening for? We have never been so insulted or made to feel like criminals for staying in a hotel in our lives. Avoid this place like the plague, or you might just catch it by staying here. Worst Fleabag hotel and service we have ever experienced. To top things off the owner trolls for "good reviews" from guests for all other travel sites. When he responds to below average ones or "ones that speak the truth" it is always the guests fault for his less than stellar reviews. This sounds like a large variety of thinking errors to believe that he can do no wrong and that his guests would actually expect a clean comfortable room served up with a smile after spending almost $100 per night. The only reason for the one star is that I can't give him a -5000 stars. If Expedia and Travelocity and any of these other travel sites knew what he was doing they would remove his "sticker for the door".

A simple mention of the hours during check-in would have made a big difference for our family. Even with that, we enjoyed our stay overall. The hotel is currently undergoing a renovation of sorts. I'm not sure what's being renovated. There are fans in the halls blowing on fresh wallboard patches. Tape and dust on the floors. The room is ok, but there was loud motor noise all night and random grinding noises until 1am, then it started again at 3am. On check-in, we asked for late checkout and was told we would have to ask in the morning. That defeats the purpose of sleeping late with a late checkout. Again, the room was clean, but I had to repair the window shade to be able to have the room darkest. Breakfast was ok, but no fruit. Also, the shower needs to be repaired.
