I had an incredible experience thanks to Mickey at the Alamo location in the Chicago Loop. After Budget rented me a car outside of their operating hours, literally leaving me stranded with no way to pick it up. Mickey stepped in, even though it wasn't his company's issue. He went completely above and beyond to help me secure a rental car and get home safely. He was kind, patient, professional, and genuinely cared about making sure I was taken care of. It's rare to meet someone who not only does their job well but embodies everything you'd hope for in an employee. Because of Mickey, I'll only be renting with Alamo from now on. Run from them! Terrible service and fees. They don't tell you that if you get any tolls, they add a $25 fee with no exception to waiving it. So my $1.50 toll turned in into $26.50. This is on top of all the other fees. My $155 rental went to $225 after all of the fees they add without telling you when booking. Not including the $25 toll fee they added. Worst experience I've had at a rental car place. Put in my reservation ahead of time only to arrive to receive my car with a line of 15 people waiting for cars.. there were no cars. (Well there were plenty of cars in the garage but for some reason they were not letting ppl take them). So we waited for people to bring their cars back in order anyone to leave. Meanwhile, neighboring Avis/Budget had plenty of cars. Staff was friendly, seemed to be working hard, but it was like watching things in slow motion. Waited well over an hour just to get the car. Will never rent from Alamo again. Much better luck with other services. Price wasn't worth the hassle. Word to alamo don't rent out cars, if you don't have them available. read more

Could there be a ruder person than the lady at Alamo? I don't know her name but she's awful. She refused to help us, even though I had a valid driver's license. She said she needed my cancelled precious driver's license or passport. What?! Why on earth would you need that? I have a VALID license. And even if she did, she could have told us in a nicer way. She was so surly and unpleasant. We didn't want to deal with her and her poor attitude, so we went right across the hall to Budget/Avis where they were lovely and helped us right away. No wonder there was a line for the Budget/Avis and not a single person waiting for Alamo. read more

They assumed a accepted a reduced amount for the lack of not having XM. Not true. Was told that someone reached out to me by phone. Again, not true. It's been almost one week, and no phone call. Writing to share my experiences at Alamo over the last two years. To be clear, I've only rented from them a handful of times (and always from this location), but I've had a great experience each and every time. The employees at the pickup/dropoff area are always professional and friendly, the vehicle I've reserved is always clean and ready on-time, and their prices are, in my experience, always the lowest. Plus, if you live off the Blue, Pink, Green, Brown, Orange, or Purple Line Line, their location couldn't be any more convenient, as it's in the same building as the Clark/Lake stop. I used to shop around for vehicle rentals, often utilizing Hertz, Budget, and Enterprise and simply went with whoever was cheapest, but, thanks to all of my positive experiences with Alamo, I'll now be renting from them exclusively. Whatever they're doing at this location is working--keep it up and please let your employees know how much their hard work is appreciated. The only caveat/heads up for folks is that figuring out where to pick the vehicle up for the first time can be a little confusing, as their address (203 N LaSalle) is for the pickup/dropoff location, while their office is located on the ground floor of Clark on the other side of the building. Note: I've always had great customer service experiences with the folks at the pickup/dropoff location (basement) and have only had one neutral experience with the employees at their office on the ground floor, as I always reserve ahead of time online; the employee who helped me at the office was kinda cold, but the folks who I actually picked the car up from couldn't have been better. read more

Rented a van for moving to the east coast. I've had variable experience experiences with rental car companies (long waits, getting stuck with cars we didn't sign up for/want), so I'm usually a little apprehensive when about to rent a car. That being said, my experience with the Loop Alamo was great. We rented a van - which they didn't have available - but they did everything they could and got us a suburban which fit all of my stuff perfectly. Just returned a car on Friday and the counter rep was busy chatting with another customer and just told me to drop off my paperwork and I will get my copy of receipt through email. Well 24+ hours later, no email. I called their office and the customer rep told me that they can only email it once, now they can only fax it to me or I have to stop by the office to pick it up. I have to pay for their mistake. Horrible service I would not rent here again. Also, Alamo Customer Service number routes to India call center and nobody there understands what you say. read more

Where do I start?! I made a reservation for a 1 way rental a few days prior. I was getting a full sized vehicle for a decent price. I get there and they don't have anything besides a van and a truck. Umm...not what I wanted. I was kinda stuck there so I said I'd wait for something to come in. They looked my reservation up and got my card and swiped and I looked at the paperwork when I got off the phone and saw $200 charge! I was like what the heck is this? He apologized and refunded the money. I get downstairs to the garage where they keep the cars and the guy is still trying to give me the van or truck. They even said I would get a free toll pass and I could return the car empty. Another 30 min goes past and a car finally comes in. A mid sized one! It was ok I was just ready to get home. Fast forward to Sunday when I dropped it off. I probably had a 1/4 tank in there and remember, they said drop it off empty. These fools charged me for that gas and the toll pass thing. I'm like are you kidding me? They said it would be taken off. Checked my credit card statement and it hasn't been taken off even AFTER I called them. Not sure if it was a miscommunication or just flat out lies but it's not cool. The one guy in the garage in Chicago was actually friendly. Can't remember his name but everyone else there pretty much sucked. I doubt I'll be renting from this place ever again. read more

I had a great experience working with Richard at this location. When our flight was canceled with no option of rebooking (thanks Spirit... ya trash. #chiberia19), we needed m a quick solution to get to New Orleans and I was so happy to have interacted with Richard and the attendant in the pick-up garage (sorry I forgot your name!). REMEMBER A CREDIT CARD. I hadn't rented a car not-on-company-dollar in a very long time and only had my debit card. Richard tried and tried, but no cigar. Need a major CREDIT card. Once I got to pick up my car, I basically had my choice of whatever was in the garage. Not the car that was advertised when I made my reservation, but I got a great vehicle that should have been priced over what I paid. This location is convenient, right off the brown line and not too far from red. Lobby isn't spectacular, but it doesn't need to be. Everything was easy from start to finish! read more

Alamo just lost us as customers. I ordered our car on Wednesday to be picked up on Saturday. We waited in a line for 15 minutes only to be told that it would be over an hour wait to receive a car. We had to be at our destination within that time. If they had called us in advance we could have proactively figured out an alternate mode of transportation but now we are behind schedule and spending double the amount of money to get there in an Uber. Do not use this rental service, especially on weekends. read more

I'm not denying that I missed a .55 cent toll on the freeway down from Milwaukee but charging me a $15.00 dollar service fee is hardly fair. The best part of renting a car here, versus the airport, is that you will pay about half by avoiding all the ridiculous airport fees. Considering you can take the L here very easily from either airport, I would recommend this route for budget conscious travelers, particularly if you don't have kids. The Impala we got was awesome, and we got a free upgrade because they did not have the midsize we reserved. The counter service was not particularly friendly, and I think they were up to no good with the toll pass (which I declined), but they gave me an extra hour free and did not hassle me when I told them the car was half empty when I picked it up (which was true). All in all a very good experience. read more

Richard was so patient with us when we had trouble deciding what our needs were and had terrific suggestions. I watched him as he gave the same phenomenal and efficient service to everyone. Antonio was wonderful to work with as well. He served everyone quickly, and kindly. He was very clear in his directions and went above and beyond when we asked whether or not you had vehicles with roof racks. As a result of positive comments on forums and positive online reviews  (my Google search phrase was "Budget vs. Alamo"), we decided to rent from Alamo. Comments spoke to your quick auto-check-in and efficient service. It cost us about $100 more for a 14-day rental and was well worth it! This car rental company knows nothing about customer service. After putting me on hold for a half an hour they were unable to honor my simple request to be added as a driver on an existing rental without the original driver being physically present even though it was prearranged that I could be added. Alamo gets 1/2 star. read more

Five star customer service. From the time we checked in to the time we returned it. Michael is the only name I remember but all we're just as courteous. The only down fall was that the toll pass did not operate but the company refunded the amount. Pointer-from what I can see you do not need the transponder. Some tolls but just pay as you go. I very much enjoy renting from Alamo in Chicago Loop. (I use to rent from Budget or Enterprise and switched!) I've rented here a few times, the price is right, the cars are nice, always good service. I am picky on what I drive, and here you can choose the car you want over them saying you have to take this one without seeing the car first (since the garage is separate form the counter). I was unable to make my flight and had to take a different flight the next day. I called Alamo to inform them that I would be arriving one day later and I wanted to ensure my reservation would not be cancelled. I had prepaid $820 for my rental period and was told now that I was arriving one day later - I now would owe and additional 100 dollars. How can they charge me more for using the car one day less??? I would be happy to still pay the same for my rental period but to have to pay more is crazy. I will never use Alamo again - and never prepay for a rental. The lady was apologetic and told me not to use the prepay option - but was unable to not charge me an additional amount. What an absurd policy - they may have made an extra $100 off me but it cost them a future customer. read more

I would like to share my very unpleasant experience with this non customer focused business. We arrived at the check in counter to pick up our hire car only to be told that we are 1 hour early and that is we wanted the car now it would be an additional $75.00 plus tax!!!. I kindly asked the agent if he was serious, and at this time was told to take it or leave it!!. I politely declined, walked out and had a coffee just down the road for an hour and then returned. Upon our return we filled in all of the appropriate paperwork and we were then directed to a lift across the hallway and directed to level 2 below ground. Sounds simple you say, well having arrived at level 2 in an unsavoury underground car park with no signage we had to ask a member of the public if we were in the right place? They kindly pointed us in the right direction. We found the small Alamo office and showed the attendant our paperwork. We had paid for a "Full Size" car and were offered a Chrysler 200 or a Toyota Rav 4. Well Chrysler advertise the 200 on their web site as a medium size car and on the Alamo site the Rav 4 is advertised as a medium SUV. I asked the attendant why he had no full size cars as requested and he only grunted! I took the Chrysler 200 as by this time I could not be bothered taking the matter any further, the car it self was fine, however it looked as though it had been put through a dust storm and then just showed a sprinkle of water. I will ne be a returning customer and you are all welcome to make up your own mind on this issue. read more

I have no clue why people here give this place bad reviews. I have used them a half dozen times and equate dealing with car rentals with the DMV and the post office, but I have never been disappointed here. They are always flexible on pick up times. They always are nice and let me pick out what car I would like to drive that day. No complaints from me. It is also very conveniently located. read more

Very fast service - especially when you use the 'do it yourself' terminal inside. The car was nice and the people were friendly.

I had a reservation at this location last week and tried to claim it, when the slimy desk agents did everything they could to refuse to rent to me. The Alamo and National offices are combined since they are owned by the same company. The reason I know why the slimy agents didn't want to rent to me is because I had an amazing rate ($160/weekly) and I heard them mumbling to each other they were short of cars. Initially, the slimiest of the two said he couldn't find my reservation, then he did. Then it was he couldn't rent to me because he assumed I didn't have a round trip ticket to/from Chicago (I did). Then he said they didn't accept debit cars and I called Alamo in advance to confirm that they did. Lastly, he said Alamo wouldn't rent to someone who didn't fly in/out on the exact days of the rental. He said Alamo would "write him up"! Really, is this what renting a car from you clowns has come down to? Every once and awhile I leave Hertz and I always regret it. I got on the phone, found a Hertz location 5 blocks away, rented a car for $20 more and was in/out of the rental facility in 12 minutes. Alamo/National? No Thanks! read more

My review is in regards to an online reservation I made and not with this particular location. I would like to start off by saying I have never rented with Alamo before and with the experience I had I UNFORTUNATLY NEVER WILL rent with them! I made a reservation on 1/9/2014 for pick up 2/8/2014 and returning 2/11/2014 my total price was $54.02. Due to weather condition on 2/8/2014 in Chicago (MDW) and Portland (PDX) flights were delayed and subsequently canceled. I spoke two someone on 2 occasions that day at the toll free phone number on my reservation confirmation to inform them of this issue. (888 826-6893) I asked to modify my reservation for 2/9/2014-2/12/2014 and was told it could be done but new rate would be $189.00.!!!!! I cancelled all together and found (and rented) with Thrifty Car rental at the same location for the same modified dates and was charged $57.82. Confirmation # FXP7KH. I find it very disappointing that this company would take advantage of a customer during dangerous weather conditions in such a bold fashion. read more

Way over priced. Rented a Sonata for 5 days. Costed us a little over $500..and the car was dirty! Customer service was not very good either. They would not even work with us when we tried to set a more convenient drop off location in the same city. They said it would affect the price for the entire duration, meaning it would cost MORE! I recently rented a car from Alamo and felt compelled to write about the good and bad, even though the bad outweighed the good. The good first. The car, once I got it, was full of gas, very clean and was perfect for what I needed it for. Also, I had to extend my reservervation, and the phone lady was very helpful. Now at this location, the reason I gave 2 stars is the service is TERRIBLE. Think about the worst restaurant experience you've ever had, and this is probably worse. I walked in and waited ten minutes to be told cars were backed up and it would be at least 30 minutes until I got a car, depite my reservation. After I waited, I was then told I could have a jeep (I am driving 300+ miles) and had to wait longer for a sedan. After about 45 min the two service reps were talking and one mentioned the Altima downstairs. An unused Altima, and I rent a full-size car. I was livid to say the least. I waited while the two reps talked about fashion and boys and what not. Attitude and a lot of rolling of the eyes upstairs and in the garage... Just expect a crappy experience there, but once you get your car and get out, it is great. read more
