I've always had good service at this National location - if you can find it. Please note that the rental office is on Clark Street and NOT on LaSalle Street which is their official address. Once you can find the rental office however, I've never really had a wait, and once you take the [slightly sketchy] elevator downstairs and find the rental car pick area past Hertz, etc. I've always had a surprisingly friendly and efficient experience. Keep in mind this is a neighborhood location (one of the few from National) so Emerald Aisle doesn't exist here and you'll get whatever class of car you reserved. They usually have upgrades available (occasionally free of charge if you're Executive+) but on a recent visit I was lucky to get the Full Size I reserved as I was told there was nothing larger available and even my Altima was one of the last Full Size options. Overall, this is one of the better neighborhood rental car locations I've ever rented from (which includes Enterprise, National, and Hertz) though on my first visit it was not smooth given that I was looking for them on LaSalle Street per their address. Once you know the office is on Clark near the intersection with Lake, yet the garage ramp and return is on LaSalle, the rest of the rental experience is likely to be pretty good from my past experience. read more

This is probably the worst National Car Rental location in the world. Usually National is pretty good at treating their customers with respect and acknowledging when something goes wrong, but not at this location. First it's confusing to get here and then their staff is just rude and inconsiderate. The system had let me book a car for a certain time, when I showed up, I was told in a rude tone that the wait was 2 hrs for a vehicle and asked then went and asked for my credit card and DL without even apologizing or acknowledging the situation. This is not the type of service that National strives for. I'd just go across the hall and rent from Avis as they are much nicer and treat you like a customer, not like an inconvenience. read more

This location is a shit hole. The woman who call herself manager (in picture) is disgusting. She yells at her colleagues and her customers. She didn't have the car I reserved, and tried to sell her mistake to Chicago Marathon. If you have a choice to not honoring a customer's reservation, what's the point of my reservation? They don't check or clean the vehicle, which explains why people from previous reviews complain their cars are dirty. I see people return cars to them, they just give them to the next customer right away. I was sitting on a valid reservation, waited for over 30 mins, ended up getting no cars but the managers rude attitude. Future customer needs to reconsider if you wanna deal with that face before you come. Corporate office needs to step in and investigate this problematic branch. read more

The front desk lady just said they were closed(without looked at me) and walked away! I dropped of my rental car and left my backpack on the seat directly behind the driver seat. I drop off the car, they give it to someone else without cleaning the car. How do I know they didn't clean the car? Because my backpack drove away with the next customer. Especially during COVID National Car Rental DOES NOT CLEAN ITS CARS. We were in a bind because our flight got in late and we had rented a car from Avis for pickup at 10:30pm, but apparently Avis closed at 10:00 pm, so when we got off our flight, there was no car and we were stranded at the airport. A lot of city dwellers (like me) choose not to own a car but there are definitely times when ya do need a vehicle , which makes renting a car a necessity at times. I use ZipCar for short trips but when I need a car for more than half a day, it makes sense to do a regular car rental. I've used pretty much all of the car rental companies out there and have settled on National for 95% of my car rental needs. If you are a frequent renter , you should enroll in their Emerald Club (free). For every 5 times you rent a car (even if it's only 1 day) you get a free days rental. Their rates are competitive, as good as if not better than anyone else in Chicago. In regards to this particular branch of National, it is not considered a major branch for them. It's just a toss in location so they don't lose local business to a competitor. But the counter people are great , very friendly and courteous. And if you ask for an upgrade, chances are they'll give it to you if it's a slow day. Now the security staff downstairs in the garage who check your vehicles in and out, they are a bunch of zipper head idiots. They are a 3rd party rent-a-cop type outfit, not National Car employee's, and they are a lazy, incompetent group. I'm guessing lazy and incompetent are prerequisite skills on their job applications. Just keep your dealings with them to a minimum (ie..take any/all questions upstairs to the counter) and you'll be OK. read more

National Car Rental is my favorite car rental company because I love their rewards program, and this downtown location is exceptional. Front desk and garage pickup are super nice. Several times they have upgraded me to a better car because I was taking far trips to Springfield IL and another one to Bloomington IL and the road conditions were not that great. Holy Rude Lady!! Seriously, I'm sorry that you have to work in a crummy trailer in a bad neighborhood at 1 am, but that is not my fault and certainly does not give you the right to treat me like shit. There, I said it. I had to get that off my chest! I reserved the car online through hotwire, I listed myself as the buyer and added my friend because she was doing the driving. It was pretty simple online but this lady seemed to think I was pulling something. She insisted we get extra insurance that was almost $200! She said that she wasn't even supposed to do that but she would do it anyway. She said that without this insurance if something happened to the car, it would come back on her. Whatever. But she was big, mad, and it was 1am, what were we going to do? I was not about to get in a fight so we just said ok. We actually wound up with a Passat, then I was worried they were going to charge me more when we returned it, but they didn't thankfully. It was the only car in the compact spots we could pull out. Maybe it is considered a compact car, but it seemed really nice. The car was clean and comfortable. When we returned it the staff was much more human and pleasant. The let us pull it right into the cleaning stations. They flagged the bus over so we didn't have to walk and lug all of our gear. If the pick up experience was a good as when we dropped it off I'm sure this review would have been 5 stars. But when customer service is that bad, no amount of nice can make up for it. read more

I would like to report excellent customer service from Richard and Darius at the National Car Rental location on LaSalle. This past Thursday, I made a reservation for a compact car for a conference and your team was extremely patient. I had to push my pickup time back several times and due to our large luggage and unexpected passenger we were accommodated with an upgrade. Can't give them 5 stars, since I wouldn't call this "As good as it gets." But they're close. Staff attitude is great, every time. I rent from them regularly, more than their neighbor Avis because they're usually cheaper. If it's a tie, I go with National. In general, their cars are cleaner, but their hours are worse. I've rented from this location at least 50 times in the last 9 years, and the staff is always friendly and helpful. They deserve 5 stars. My mark-down has to do with the location and it's feedback, not really a complaint. 1. The location is dirty and dimly lit. 2. The one-way (shared) in/out ramp is miserable. 3. The car selection is too limited and I feel like I don't get the same degree of upgrades as at the airport (e.g., I'm told I'm not eligible for the same vehicles that I've regularly gotten at the same rate/reservation level as the airport). 4. The shared space with Avis results in them blocking the path to/from your area at times, which means I have to squeeze between (dirty) cars with my luggage, often in a business suit. Not good. The two negative ratings from others don't seem to apply to this specific location, so I suggest taking them in context. While there may be some shortfalls to this location, the staff is great, and I'm thrilled to have a downtown location available. read more

I am one of those customers that travels quite a bit for work purposes. I choose National because of the GREAT service I receive each time I go, their rental benefits, and above all, their selection of cars. I live in the city of Chicago and have another competitor right around the corner from my apartment. Their service was terrible, their cars were dirty or had an odd smell/funk in them, majority of the cars I rented from there never had gas and weren't even clean! Do yourself a favor, go to National off of La Salle if you want a BRAND NEW car with all the bells and whistles. The guys there are very nice and always take care of the customers. I have used National many times at various airports and love their emerald aisle. I have frequently gotten a pickup truck or minivan at the aisle for the same price as a mid size car. Recently, I went to this location where there is no aisle. I paid for a full size car and was upgraded for free to a premium Chrysler 300 that was a really nice ride. All the cars I get from National are in great shape, don't smell, and run great. I thought George was great in terms of customer service at this location as well. read more

When I made the reservation, I requested a compact car. When I showed up, I was told they only had a minivan for me. I told them no, so then they offered me a Chevy Traverse... which is also a huge car. After a few minutes they told me I could wait for a Chevy Malibu, which is what I ended up doing. I had a great experience at the LaSalle National location! The car was in great shape, all the employees were laid back & friendly, and the check-in & return processes were both very smooth. For new renters, be aware that the check-in desk is actually on Clark St. (not LaSalle). Further, there's only a single twisty one-lane entry/exit ramp that leads to/from the basement parking garage & LaSalle St. So entering/exiting the facility can be a little nerve-wracking, since you might drive into another car heading towards you from the opposite direction! read more

The pick up and drop off was great until.......I realized I had left my 200 dollar jacket in the back seat. I called and spoke to BRE at the actual location on Lasalle street. She was not helpful at all and told me she couldn't help me unless i had the rental information. Of course I was upset and was irate, but did not use any profanity and she hung the phone up! Which was stupid because it didn't help the situation. I called back and spoke with rich ( who was in the exact location and found my information instantly without a rental number) he was able to track down my jacket. The people at National Car Rental are always the most friendly and helpful. I say this as someone who drives infrequently and is skittish about driving. The last time that I was there, the guy in the garage helped me pick out a car that was just right for me (whoever that guy is that works on the weekends please give him a raise, he is awesome). I rent cars weekly and I will say the customer service at this location is OUTSTANDING! I have been to this location when it is crowded and when I am the only person there. Somehow they are able to treat me the same way with great service. I am a National Emerald Club member with Executive status and although they don't have a designated section they usually let me pick any car in the garage. One time my rental car was having issues and I was able to drop it off and swap it if I wanted to. I didn't need another car at the time so they refunded me AND comped me for a later rental for free, just because of the inconvenience. This is a local location that can still compete with the big boys at the airport. All because of superior service. Keep up the great work! read more
