Out of all the car rental services I have used, I like Getaround the best for short trips (less than 1 day). I've used Turo, traditional car rental companies (Hertz, Enterprise, etc.), and Zipcar. I think Truo and traditional rental companies are built more for longer term rentals and Zipcar is the most comparable. The hourly rates for Getaround are fairly reasonable, much better than Zipcar, plus Getaround doesn't charge a monthly fee. However, there is a reason why Zipcar is so expensive: the cars are owned and maintained by the company instead of ordinary people. With Getaround, you're renting out other people's cars and so the company doesn't have full control over the vehicle. It is possible that you may book a car that looks pretty good in the listing but when you get it, it's kind of dirty or not what you expected because the owner doesn't clean/maintain it. That is not necessarily Getaround's fault. For me, I've accepted that this may happen (and it has before), but for the money I save by not using Zipcar, it's fine by me. I have used Getaround so much that I know which cars in my area are clean and well-maintained and I tend to stick to those. If you're not willing to take the risk that a car might not be in perfect condition, then I'd say you should be willing to pay a premium for that. I've had maybe 2 interactions with customer service and both have been very good. I once got automatically charged a lot for gas because the car is parked on a slope and that affected the fuel level recorded after I dropped the car back. I only drove 5 miles in a 22mpg car, but the fuel level recordings made it seem like I used nearly 10% of the gas. I got my money back after explaining to CS via email. Another time I dropped off the car and then when I got to my apartment 2 blocks away I realized I left something in the car. I was able to call a customer service rep via the app and they waited on the phone as I walked back to the car and helped me unlock the car to get the item and lock it back up. Based on all of my Getaround experiences so far I'd definitely recommend it if you're a fairly flexible person with realistic expectations. read more

This might be one of the worst scams I've ever dealt with in my entire life. Not only is the customer service absolutely terrible but you have incredible risk personally when leasing out your car to somebody else. This app does not have your back and their insurance will not cover you. If you do use this app and someone messes with your car, you will be 100% liable and therefore will have to pay for it out of pocket. I rented a car from Getaround, and received a car that had been recalled with the issue never being resolved. The issue, which was related to easy theft of the car, resulted in the car BEING STOLEN almost immediately after I first retrieved and parked the car. Not only did I not get to use the car for the duration of the rental, when I informed Getaround they told me that I WAS RESPONSIBLE TO RETRIEVE THE CAR FROM THE THIEVES (they have tracking and disabling devices on their vehicles), and then THEY CHARED ME FOR THE RENTAL, A "CLAIMS FEE" OF $100, AND AN REPAIR FEE OF $500!!! I've never received worse service. They have hung up on me and ignored emails and messages sent through the app, proceeding to charge me without my permission. If a car is recalled for any safety reason (imagine if it had been the brakes and I had been in an accident as a result of the disregarded recall!), it should not be rented to unsuspecting customers. As a host with a small fleet of cars in a central location in downtown Chicago, the money is great (I mean great) but I'm losing my confidence in the company. I'll say that here, because I've actually recommended people to host on the app and it might take a bit longer to work up the confidence to say that to them. I had a car totaled by a renter and it's been over two months without receiving my promised compensation. Plus, what would you know, I've already signed away the title. Meanwhile, the expenses I have related to the car didn't stop. Garage fees don't stop being incurred and their base compensation for loss of use of the car despite my busy location was disappointingly low. So it doesn't cover it or feel fair. While on the subject of fair, I recently had another car damaged (my new car at that) during a rental and the company is refusing to not only cover damages because it's outside of 7 days but despite knowing when the damages occurred and who did them, they are refusing to hold the renter liable for damages which is essentially all I'm asking of them now. Also, how about you notify your host when damages occur especially when you have photo evidence? The policy is purely ludicrous and intentional and I don't know if fully trust a company that finds loop holes for taking accountability and responsibility for their flawed business model. Just fix it. Don't make excuses or tell me what's my responsibility. What's your responsibility to your core business? If I didn't share my cars and keep buying cars to rent downtown how you even compete with your competitors? You wouldn't. I say this to say, If you're considering them, I would say think carefully. I rented my new Jeep on her around only for it to be abused, smoked in, trashed wrecked and dumped. Get around didn't locate or find my Jeep for me and refused to cover the cleaning fee. They also refused to pay for all of the damages from the accident and only sent me a check for $1200. Will never rent my car on here again! read more

Zero stars. I was suspicious of the bad reviews but decided to rent anyway because I had a good experience with Turo. Total scam. I rented a car for Thanksgiving Nov 22-27 and only ended up needing it for two days. I returned the car to the garage in the same exact condition I picked it up in, and not only are trying to charge me $760.27 for a "damage fee," they also refuse to return my $4,000 security deposit. The worst part? The "investigation" into the claim involves comparing photos taken of the car, when the scratch on the bumper they're claiming was my fault is an old picture of the vehicle. I just used Getaround to rent a car for the 1st time this weekend. It seemed like a great alternative to renting a car from Enterprise, because Enterprise by me is wildly undependable. My problem with Enterprise is that about 50% of the time I have reserved a car in advance, there were no cars available when I went to pick it up. This happened to me with Getaround this weekend, but at least Getaround found a new car for me within a couple of blocks. The good: I was impressed with the number of cars available within walking distance to me. I wanted to rent it for the weekend, and most of them were around $110, which seems decent enough. The bad: There is no way to get customer service until a problem is critical. You can't reach out to them. After I scheduled the Prius for 2pm Fri-6pm Sunday, I decided I would rather have the car at 1pm Friday. There was absolutely no way to change that. I clicked extend 1 hour to see if that gave me the option to start earlier, but it just added 1 hour to the end, which I couldn't fix either. I clicked to email customer service Friday morning, and got a response Sunday afternoon. My trip was already finished before they tried to help! More bad: You're supposed to get a text with the car location 15 minutes before your trip starts, but I didn't get a text. I located the car anyway. But then I couldn't get it to unlock. I thought it was my phone being dumb, so I spent 15 minutes trying. Finally I called for help (they give you the ability to call for help once your trip officially starts). Over the phone they said the Prius had a dead battery. No wonder I couldn't get it to unlock! The customer service rep found a new car, a Camry, 2 blocks away. She scheduled it for me for 2:30pm-6pm Sunday (so at least the new issue helped me fix part of my initial issue). The Camry was a bit more expensive than the Prius, so she tried to make it sound like I was getting a deal (but I wanted the mileage and the cargo space of the Prius). In the end they said they would give me a $20 refund. Fine: I finally got into a car a little after 2:30pm. The car was dirty on the outside but clean and empty inside. So fine with me! It was great to have a car for the weekend. It was easy to use the app to unlock the car, and the key was where they said it would be. Everything was good and useful. It was way easier to return this car than it is to return one to Enterprise. I just put it in the same spot I got it in, and marked on the app it was returned clean and with a full tank of gas. About Me: I don't own a car. I can borrow a car from family sometimes, and occasionally rent cars for weekend trips. Conclusion: I would rent cars from Getaround again, unless a better app came out or Turro had more availability within walking distance of me. AS AN Experienced HOST... I would stay FAR FAR away from this platform. I almost lost my job because a GETAROUND made a mistake and either forgot or made an error with a ride cancellation I requested (you have to call to cancel- ridiculous). The driver came and found my car at my workplace and caused havoc when they found out the car was not available. Way too much liability -- someone can find and pick up your car within 15 minutes of booking, any time of day of night? What happens if it gets damaged with no photo evidence prior to the trip? ZERO STARS! RUN FAST AND RUN FAR!!! First time I booked was awful. I arrived to a damaged car with the bumper literally falling off. It was littered with dirt, cobwebs on the dash, DRUG paraphernalia, fast food crushed in to the cup holders, reeked of smoke and weed and the list goes on. Getaround did NOTHING to remedy this. I gave them a second chance as I'm a firm believer in them. Fool me twice shame on me. Second time I arrived to a car covered in scratches and dents and the trunk flew open on the highway nearly causing an accident. The "host" did not give a s**t and neither did Getaround. I of course had to return it right away. It took over two hours of my own persistence to get in to another vehicle. This one was even filthier than the last and again covered in dents and damage and again smelled like smoke. I was already running so late I dealt with it. Upon returning my card is hit with bogus charges including one for not refueling which I did in entirety and have pictures to prove it. Attached are screen shots of actual conversations between myself and the host. One admitting she did not clean the car even though we're in a pandemic, and the second showing absolutely no accountability or concern that his car nearly killed me. Terrible company. Cars are in atrocious condition. Recently brought my friend to the rental car on her way to a wedding shower. The first car was on a very used donut tire. Unacceptable. They switched to a 13 year old VW Rabbit that was obviously wrecked from all angles. It was rusty, had part of a door (yes the door itself) peeled back, and the hood would not latch closed. Luckily I was with her to drive her around to a 3rd, and finally acceptable vehicle. The cost for 4 hours in a roughly $13k car? Over $90. I found getaround and there are dozens of nice cars available to use all over the city. I selected one that was two blocks from where I was staying. I still like this program but I've run afoul the app/company. First is a screenshot taken Nov 26.There is a absence of rentals in a circular pattern right over my home address. However I went to "My Trips" and I was able to "Rent Again" a car I've rented before. That is how I booked my November 27th rental. I drove and completed that reservation without a problem. Screenshots from today (Nov 28) demonstrate the absence of nearby rentals. The closest rental is 0.9 miles away. A similar search for Monday, Dec 2 has the closest rental 1.0 miles away. The other screenshots show that there are THREE cars 0.3-0.5 miles away that are AVAILABLE for rental for the times I searched (when I manually retrieve cars I've rented previously). This is not a case of cars being unavailable because of the holiday. This is systematic search manipulation. They must be trying to boost rentals of low utilization cars OR they are testing to see how far customers are willing to walk to a rental. I hate it. Don't do this Getaround!! I loved this program and I've been using it almost weekly since March but I don't like being manipulated. Avoid getaround unless no other options. Their standards for cars is so low, I've been in some disgusting cars but had to keep the trip because they never give a refund, just promo codes so you stay stuck in a cycle of using their services. I was in a rental that literally started smoking on the expressway and I had to fight for almost 3 months just to get $19 of my almost $50 trip. Their customer service department is incredibly incompetent at keeping up with issues and tickets. Cars are pretty much maintained by renters informing getaround of cleanliness issues, maintenance issues, parking issues. Simply poor standards, much better off using zipcar. Their cars are always clean and if you have even a small issue, their customer service quickly addresses it and gives you more than a $10 promo code. Maybe they're better in other cities, but in Chicago it's the lowest level of car rental services. You'll see photos of the car I rented, their compensation? #1 requirement for an app to be successful? It NEEDS TO WORK. Your customer journey makes no sense. Per your process, every driver needs to have their driver's license verified. HOWEVER, this process can take up to 48 hours AND you won't start it until a reservation is made. How does the make any sense? Why do I need to be charged for the rental and deposit for you to even verify my license? Did anyone in your company think this through clearly? Throw the process up on the whiteboard and a light bulb will hopefully click. --UPDATE the $20 "driving" credit is misleading because you are charged an upfront fee of $10. I borrowed a car for one day back in December and was unfortunately rear-ended on my way back to return the vehicle. I exchanged information with the person who hit me, reported everything to Getaround, including a description and vehicle photos, and submitted a ticket the same day. Getaround never reached out to me and instead emailed me over a month later saying that they charged my card $456.72 for damages. I work in insurance, and not only is the person who rear-ended me responsible for the damages, but the company handling the claim should have reached out to all parties to collect all information. Instead, with no contact for over 30 days, I'm send an email saying I've been charged and no further action is needed? Years ago, I also shared my car with Getaround as an owner and was also incorrectly charged about a month after I pulled my car off the platform and had already sold my car. Vehicles having maintenance issues are not addressed by Getaround and certainly not the owner of these cars, for they are making easy money; I have rented two different cars where the trunk would NOT open with the remote - Getaround did NOTHING. Disclaimer: I got a larger-than-usual sign up credit, but the prices still beat Hertz even without it, and definitely beat Zipcar. Because of that credit I decided to try out Getaround for a weekend trip out to the burbs. Signing up and reserving a car was simple, though prices vary wildly. I went with a car that was a little further away to save some money. The minute my reservation started, I was able to unlock my car with the app and drive away. The car itself has definitely seen some wear and tear. It was clean, but older, and the suspension was almost non-existent. Lacking some basic stuff like USB outlets, but hey, it worked. Overall I would consider using Getaround again. When it comes to short term car rentals (when it's just far enough Uber doesn't make sense) price is king, and GA generally delivers there (if you can find a car close enough with the right price and available when you need it). I tried Getaround as a renter and had a terrible experience. You can be accused of damage weeks later, charged for repairs and never be able to talk to a person about it. First issue, I rented a car and a few days after the trip I get an email saying the keys are missing. I used a car with keyless entry and an app that unlocks the car so I never touched the keys! They charged my credit card $458 and don't respond to my emails! Second issue, 2 weeks after I rented the same car as above, I receive an email saying there is an issue. They did not give any information on what the issue is. 10 days later I get a claim for $934 for a scratch on the roof of the car. I did not use the roof of the car so I have no idea what is going on. I respond asking for information such as the inspection photos I took before the trip and why the insurance date of loss is dated 2 weeks after my trip and have not received a response. Altogether, Ive been emailed by four GetAround employees to say they are charging me for issues. I replied to each email and have not received a single response to my questions. When I call the phone number on the receipt, it says the number is no longer monitored. There are no phone numbers listed online. So I have also been unable to communicate with anyone at GetAround over ~$1400 in issues. I have never had a bad experience with a traditional car rental company so this has been a nightmare. They clearly do not care about customer experience if they don't respond to emails or provide a phone number. My only recourse is to try to fight the charges with my bank. read more

Works well if you find a car near you, but I had really bad luck the past year with this service. On the north side of Chicago a lot of the cars are owned by same "Michelle c" person which feels uber sketch to me. Customer service is really unhelpful. I've discovered with enterprise you can rent and with a capital one card the insurance is included- making it cheaper then Getaround. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY AS AN OWNER OR RENTER!! I am/ was an owner and my vehicle was broken into while a renter was using it. This happened on February 7th. Almost a FULL month later and I am FINALLY getting my vehicle back. I had to send several emails and call multiple times for this to even occur. I sent 5 emails in a row (days apart) with NO RESPONSE. When I finally get a response (because I submitted a new claim) I am told that my car is ready and offered a location to go pick it up, but no phone number, no hours, no other information. While my vehicle was being held at Getaround with minimal to no communication, I had to spend over $200 on transportation. Getaround's policy in this case is "a payment for Loss of Use is intended for compensation for lost earnings, parking fees, getaround connect fees, and any ride sharing used or getaround cars booked while your car is unavailable." However, they are refusing to cover anything aside from the loss or earnings, so why even state that you will cover ride-shares and Getaround rentals? We share 40% of the rental earnings with Getaround and the moment we have an issue, they turn their cheek and prove to have the worst customer service I have EVER experienced. Even car rental companies don't price gouge 150% at this extent. -No visible ratings and no customer reviews on the cars that you are able to rent. -Pricing could be better. The prices are slightly less than an airport car rental; you have more assurances with an airport car rental being a new model. The worst customer service I've ever dealt with. I participated in the summer bonus program. I had 2 weekdays blocked off on my calendar (which was the maximum to be eligible for the bonus) and I was told I was ineligible because I have 2 blocks on the SAME day.. when I sent them a link to their own website where is says nothing about the number of blocks I received no response. I then followed up and still got no response. Finally I submitted a new ticket and then they closed the ticket with still no response! So now I'm trying to call the number online and it says it's no longer a monitored phone line and to visit the website. I wouldn't have been so upset about the summer bonus but I've had several bad experiences. My car has been left in a tow zone by a renter and I had to spend an entire day getting my car out of the auto pound and didn't receive reimbursement for 2 months. My car was broken into after a renter left it unlocked and I couldn't use my car for over a week while it was at the shop. I notified them about this and again received no response. A renter smoked cigarettes and marijuana in my car. I had to pay to get the smell out and only got reimbursed $50 when it costs well over that. I am absolutely stunned at what Getaround is trying to do to me. In short, I tried to rent a car from them to go to the burbs and it was a total fail. The phone rep told me to get an Uber instead and Getaround would reimburse me. So I did. I sent the receipts for $108 the next day and then...crickets. They aren't even replying to my emails!! See my screenshots for proof of everything I'm saying. The long version: The last time I tried to rent a car from them, it was unavailable at the very last minute. So after having me walk around the neighborhood for 15 minutes trying to find a replacement, the getaround customer service person on the telephone, Pedro, told me to just rent an Uber instead and the company would pay me back. I told him that I was going to the suburbs and it was going to be $50 each way and he said that's fine, we'll pay you back. I even made him send me an email confirming that that's what we had agreed to. So I went and rang up $108 in Uber expenses that day and now Getaround is ghosting me!!!! I seriously can't believe it. Had a terrible experience as a host and am pulling my car off the platform. Someone with 0 trips TRASHED my car and it wreaked of weed when it was returned. I had to pay $200 to get it detailed and deodorized. When this happens, Getaround charges the guest $300, pockets $150, and then only gives the host $150. Im now out $50, hours of my own time, and a week of rental because I had to pull the car until I could get it in the shop. Getaround just said "sorry it's our policy and there's nothing we can do." I should have just stuck to Turo. After reading guest reviews of dirty cars that smell like weed it's making more sense. If you want to hotbox and trash a car just go strait to Getaround they got you. FYI I have followed up with customer service and they are no help. They charged me $100 to submit a smoking claim to get $150 back. Customer support is literally more than useless since I am now out more money because of Getaround's incompetence. Rented a 2015 Chevrolet Trax (130346 Robert's car: 15CHEVYTRAXWHITE) that broke down with a busted serpentine belt that left me stranded in the middle of nowhere 145 miles away from Chicago. Was told it is my responsibility to get car towed back to original location at my own expense. So now I've been charged $308 for a 3 day/10 hour rental that broke down less than 5 hours into the trip, leaving me without transportation for a weekend trip home for a funeral. Add another $530 for getting the car towed back to Chicago and then you have the audacity to try and charge me $63 for refueling! Ha! What a joke this fiasco has been dealing with Getaround. If Avis gives you a car that breaks down, then presumably Avis will take care of the situation if the car breaks down. Your company, instead, takes no part in assisting its customer thru the process, no offer to replace the car, no refund, nothing. Customer service is nonexistent if the trip is not active. There seems to be a serious lack of preventive maintenance on the cars that are allowed to be rented through your company. Also, back to the concerns about safety. Do you even care that I could've gotten seriously injured?! Not only me, but anyone. I mean, luckily a police officer happened to be standing by, but what if not? The car company wouldn't have helped me. Your company doesn't even seem worried that someone could have gotten hurt while using your service. The ethics of the company are seriously questionable. Getaround has been very helpful for those times one is need of a car, for brief or all day trips. I have attempted to be realistic with my expectations with rentals too. If you're using a car that is older or at a real low hourly rate, the more wear and tear it probably has. The plus side is, there are options. I can get a Toyota Corola that's 10 years old or a Lincoln MKZ from last year. Any issue that have come up, they have been willing to address and/or compensate me for. Good look read more

I was apprehensive about allowing other people to drive my car, but after giving Get Around a try, I am hooked! They vet the people who are renting and, knocking on wood, I have had nothing but a couple minor issues - not filling gas and leaving trash in the car. That said, Get Around is extremely responsive and when a renter fails to fill the car (has happened twice) I go fill it up, send the receipt to them and they reimburse me for the cost of the gar PLUS a $10 fee to me for the inconvenience. One renter was late returning the car and I had to go get it, so Get Around gave me $30 for needing to do that. So I have nothing but positive things to say about the platform. The best part is that renting the car covers my payment, garage cost and insurance! Its a great deal if your car sits around and you don't drive every day. They provide also cover the car with their insurance in addition to my personal insurance. Give it a try! read more

Bad business is what you'll get from Getaround. They are dishonest and should not be trusted. Be especially cautious if you're an owner considering listing your vehicle. They won't uphold their owner policy or honor valid damage claims. A renter smoked in my car and I requested Getaround get the smoke removed due to my work schedule; as the owner policy also states they'll reimburse you for this. They picked it up only to return it with the floor mats vacuumed and a cheap scent sprayed; the car still reeked of cigarette smoke. I then took my car and paid to have it cleaned since their owners policy states they'll reimburse you up to $300 for smoke damage and they refused to pay me and pocketed the $500 fee the renter incurred. This was my renter's 6th ride so I doubt this was his first offense and they allowed him to continue renting. Also, two renters caused minor damage to my car back in August and I can't get anyone in the claims department to address my calls and emails. It took a BBB request to get them to contact me for the first claim which they have ghosted me for scheduling the repair. The second claim was submitted on 8/20/18 and they have yet to review my case and provide me with an update. There are no measures put in place or enforced to protect the owners and they don't honor their commitment. Ultimately, they take advantage of people to make money. read more

The customer service doesn't do anything over the phone that isn't faster via email and they don't speak english i've had several terrible experiences with getaround today has been the worse. I rented a honda fit for $47 then with taxes came to $90 then add $150 deposit andi ordered this car 6am pickup for my job at 7am then i get to the pickup location and nothing is within 1-2 blocks of where they said its parked. I have to call and complain about this then getaround cancels and returns the deposit and i have wait up to 15 BUSSINESS DAYS for the cost of the rental the $90.then i ordered another car to only to refuel the car with $15 dollars and it only took $13.28 i returned the car and the app does stupid automatic checking that isn't accurate and measured it at 75% full. Now am fighting with the customer service team about that, and they emailed as well saying that the owner and driver can contest the car actually being their.SO AGAIN DONT USE GETAROUND ALL THE LOCATION TRACKING TECH AND GAS READING CHECK BUT THEY CANT DO SHIT FOR THE CUSTOMER. read more

PSA: Please beware of this ride share service and think twice before renting from or listing your car with them! Yesterday my car was stolen while under their watch. After listing my car on their site for merely one short week, their negligence led to what could have been an easily avoidable vehicular theft. The "renter" raised countless red flags from the start and should never have passed the supposed screening process they claim to have. This first time renter was allowed to book and pick up my car at the last minute at 4am clearly assuming that I, the owner, would be asleep and unable to monitor the reservation. His sole intention was to steal a car and Getaround enabled, and is continuing to enable, him. This reservation was approved through Getaround despite the car having another, legitimate, reservation only 30 minutes after this individual was required to return it. This all happened while I was asleep and in the morning, I woke to an alert that the car had been picked up. I knew instantly that something was wrong and called Getaround repeatedly only to sit on hold and then be given every excuse in the book. They wanted to give the renter the benefit of the doubt despite him repeatedly ignoring their attempts to reach him. They continued to defend him even when the tracking showing the car 150 miles away, with distance continuing to increase, at the scheduled return time. This is a company that will support and side with criminals over victims. Getaround had an opportunity to safely recover the car yesterday while it was parked at a gas station just outside of Detroit. The car was remotely disabled and the exact location was pinpointed and confirmed by eye witnesses. Getaround still failed to secure the car! First, a tow truck driver was sent to retrieve the vehicle but declined upon arrival because the perpetrators were inside the car. Next, a repo team was sent to retrieve the vehicle but they also declined upon arrival with feedback that the perpetrators looked dangerous and they were afraid for their safety. At that point, Getaround did not call law enforcement for help and instead, they left the car to sit there with no further action or attempts made to secure it. The tracker was disabled by the criminals and the car has not been seen since. Getaround has refused to file a police report despite Chicago PD telling me that Getaround needed to reach out directly. This is particularly frustrating because they have the renter's name, phone number, drivers license, and credit card information (assuming it is legitimate - which their screening process claims to verify). They have refused to offer me a rental car so that I can get to work while they go through their "procedures." They have promised callback after callback that never came. They continue to side with the perpetrator. The incompetency that has been displayed is mind blowing. They have continued to mismanage the situation throughout. There is a complete lack of communication and no customer service. I urge everyone to stay safe and NOT use this company for any of your needs. Please urge your friends and family to do the same. There are better, more ethical companies out there that provide the same service. read more
