I would like to say how great Candace Toland, Leroy Anderson and Amanda Smithers were this morning. We arrived late to pick up our rental after a flight delay and were very accommodating, friendly and patient. Candace answered all of our questions about price differences, insurance and ezpass. She also let us change the car driver to my husband from myself so he could drive. (He's kind of a control freak like that at times. Haha) Leroy took us to our car which was a mid size, took a look at my husband and offered us a complimentary upgrade to give my husband some more head and leg room and was so gracious about it, he made my husbands morning and trip after being stuck in those tiny seats on the plane. Thanks again Leroy! Amanda was so friendly and pleasant checking us out before driving off the lot with the car and even asked if we had prepaid for the gas, after we let her know what Leroy did for us, she just made us aware that there would be a difference in price because the Kia Sportage has bigger gas tank. Two reasons they get poor reviews. The upselling was ridiculous and when I told him I should receive an automatic upgrade to mid size he indicated I had paid for economy. That was correct but he kept trying to sell me a mid size or higher! To top it off, when we returned the car, the charges were all around $3 higher for each silly fee, which amounted to about 12 bucks more than I anticipated. From now on I'll stick to prepaying through Hotwire or Orbitz as they don't tack on extra fees. read more

Wish I could give zero stars. Check in kiosks consistently malfunctioned so standing in line was faster. Lied to us about availability of reserved size. (I can prove it.) Forced us to switch cars to an identical car at exit gate for no adequately explained reason. Staff yelled (for real) at my wife and threatened to cancel contract for something she did not do, while my daughter was in the back seat cringing in fear (this man was huge and I seriously thought he was going to assault my wife). Upon return, billl was $100 over contract cost. Had to get it fixed at counter. Was told it was a "computer error" (yeah... right). In summary, from checkin to checkout, every step was grievously mishandled by staff. The big guy that yelled at us should be fired immediately. However this night I had an agent name Luis..Louis not quiet exactly how to spell his name since I got his information from another employee over the phone. However his employee ID is above. He was very rude and sacastic for no apparent reason with my bf and I. Had the nerve to tell my man that he needs to walk away and stand in the corner because he smelled like smoke. Then proceeds to tell me that he is helping me out as black folks and didn't want to upset his manager. **So just because I'm a black woman, I must not disrupt masta and make him mad...smh. He also gave me wrong information telling me I will get charged a $500 fee if they smell smoke.The $500 came from me telling him my insurance deposit fee. I understand Alamo is non smoking and I abide by the rules.Just because he smelled smoke does not mean smoking will be done in the rental car. I believe he was being very judgemental and as an Alamo employee he should be spoken to. Then he has the audacity to give me the wrong contract with the wrong price, good thing I pointed it out. So he then sarcastically acts like he made a mistake, gives me the right contract and tells me I wont get charged for the price that he "accidentally" did. Well I checked today and minus the $250 holding fee he did NOT take off the extra charges that he "accidentally" did. Alamo was fine but the bus shuttle that takes you to and from the airport to get the car is the absolute WORST. I'm a frequent traveler to BWI and rent cars. It appears they decreased the amount of buses so you are literally waiting long periods of time and herded like cattle jam packed to and from. It's horrible. Safety alone is concerning then you have driver's that make fun of the situation which only makes your experience worse. I suggest Uber if you can. read more

Wow, these guys suuuuuuuuuuuck! The only reason I went with these guys in the first place was because my old man was nice enough to get me a rental car as I came into town for a visit. He went through Priceline, got a cheap deal, but , you get what you pay for... So, I show up at the large rental car building. Interestingly enough, only Alamo had a line(s). I opted for the electronic checkout via machine; big mistake. I wait in line 15 minutes and finally get to the stupid kiosk. I go through all of the questions/input my info and I;m stuck in an electronic loop. The machine keeps asking me for my driver's license. I swipe it, says continue, but then goes nowhere. I then try manually typing in my driver's license, no luck again. So, I ask one of the twerps behind the counter what to do. He ignored me. I then try the process for another five minutes before asking again. This time he asks for my credit card and license and say they don't match up because my credit card uses my abbreviated name. So, basically their machines suck balls and can't figure out common sense items. Finally, I ask again what to do. The moron behind the counter says that I can ask the people in the other line now if they mind if I "cut" in line. I'm so irritated that I go to the back of the line- the service guy put me in a really awkward position of asking people, and that flat out sucks! Another 25 minutes go by now. Finally, front of the line. I upgrade to a bigger car (my old man got me a small mobile), and tell them I want a Jeep or something equivalent. An extra $180 later (for 4 days), I go outside and then wait another 20 minutes for a car. I then tell the lady outside with the walkie talkie that it's taking a long time and why. She then proceeds to argue with me that it's only been 3 minutes. Let me see...I go outside at 7:15 and it's now 7:35, is my math wrong? I'm statrng at this crappy Mitsubishi SUV saying "I'll take that one, anything, I just wanna' go". "Nope, that's for a customer", she says. And another 10 minutes go by before she finally says "You know what, go ahead and take that one". Worst. Rental. Place. Ever! Seriously, over an hour for a car? And overcharge me? And give me something I didn 't want? Take your savings and go to Enterprise. I've never had issues with them. Eff the "savings", there are none at this moron place. I can't believe Alamo asked me to write this review, but since they asked... This was the worst customer service experience I have had renting a car in a long time. The line was atrocious. I couldn't access my reservation from the kiosk. Though I decided my preferences on picking up their insurance (almost always a bad idea my insurance rep tells me), they still bully you in to taking their extras taking yet more of my time. There are always people sitting in the back doing god knows what where there is a long line. You would think having a super long line that takes an hour would be an all hands on deck kind of situation, but no... There was no line at the Avis counter. Oh, and they did not have the car I rented... All in all, we will try a different rental company when we rent at the Baltimore airport. read more

I read some bad reviews before renting, so I was extra careful with making sure that I got insurance (at about $13 a day). I booked through Hotwire, so I got a really good deal. The attendants were polite and professional, and because they were out of economy cars, I was upgraded to a full-size. On the return, the attendant was especially nice and friendly. I chatted with her for a minute, and she gave me a receipt for $0 extra due. So I was all set and on my way to the airport shuttle. read more

This is my first experience with Alamo and I will never use them as a rental company again. I made my reservation through Hotwire for an Economy size car, "Seating: 4 adults, Cargo: 1 large, 1 small suitcase, Models: Hyundai Accent or similar" --- (from my Hotwire confirmation). When I arrived in MD after a long flight from San Diego I was told that my reservation was for a Smart Car and I would have to pay an upgrade to get a 4 door. When I pointed out my reservation on Hotwire I was told that Hotwire isn't always accurate in their information. Since I was tired from a long flight and in a hurry to get to my next destination, I agreed to the upgrade without speaking to a manager (which I take complete responsibility for). I have now been charged for an additional $250 on top of my Hotwire reservation. I take responsibility for the upgrade charge, but the additional insurance charge (when I had declined insurance) and the over $40 gas charge are completely unauthorized. I returned the car with a half take, meaning the gas charge should have been no more than $20...not a full tank charge. My case is currently being "investigated".... Edited 6/6/15 The branch manager, John, at BWI contacted me after I posed my review. He apologized for the up-sale and the unauthorized charges and fully refunded me. It was more than I expected, and he seemed genuine in his apology. It seems that this Alamo BWI location has previously used shade business practices, but is making an effort to do better business in the future. I can respect that. read more

After reading the negative experiences from other customers, I felt compelled to let everyone know about MY VERY positive experience at BWI's Alamo rental desk. First of all, I had reserved a Standard Size SUV as my wife and I were traveling with our 2 small grandchildren (3yrs old and 1 1/2yrs old - 2 car seats, stroller, and all the paraphernalia that go with traveling with small children! We arrived 4 hours late, after a cancelled flight due to weather, a delayed flight (again due to weather), and 45 minutes of circling around BWI until the runway was cleared and de-iced for our landing. Needless to say, we were All tired (the kids were exhausted and winey, as now it was 11:30pm), and I just wanted to jump into our rental. I can't say Enough about the help that we got from the manager Sherri (sp.), Kyle and one other helpful young man, who not only upgraded us (at NO charge) to a Clean (they had 6 inches of snow and ice on top of that) full size SUV), but were very happy to help us with our belongings. Being from New Hampshire, I have no problem driving (this winter we have gotten almost 9 feet of snow) in the sloppy, hazardous conditions that we encountered that evening, but sure was happy to have a heavier, more rugged, and larger SUV for the 1 1/2 hour trip to our destination. My car was totaled by my insurance company so I have had to use a rental car on frequent occasions. The reality is that Alamo at the airport offers the best prices and service. The people are friendly, hospitable and always provide great service with a friendly smile. They have never let me down and I will use them regularly when it comes to any time I ever need a rental car. I recently rented a car from Alamo not too long ago. The car drove ok but it was very unsafe! It was a rainy weekend on which I had rented the car and their wind shield wipers did not work for s***. I could not see where I was driving and felt unsafe! When returning the car, I experienced the worst service ever! Truly had a positive experience with all the staff involved in getting our rental. Online check in was wonderful and sped up the whole process. Booked on Hotwire for an economy car. The shuttle from the airport is very handy. Didn't realize the rental car place is miles away from the airport. We got there and were greeted by an associate. He said we could pick any of the cars in the lot. He offered us a Fiat, really wanted us to try the Italian made car. I declined and he let us check around and sit in a few. This was the first time I had a rental car place let me do that. I picked a Hyundai one but as I started to drive, the brakes would grind whenever I came to a stop. I drove back around and he easily let me pick another car. The versa note I picked did the job. Also, they offered an EZ pass (I believe around 4 dollars a day) which was a life saver. Get this if you plan on doing some driving around the east coast. They were so nice, never tried to up sell me when I was there. Dropping off was also a breeze. I've had rougher times with Hertz, with wait times and cars not being ready. Alamo really made renting a car very easy. read more

No problems. I had pre-paid and there were no issues with that. We requested an Economy car and were given a brand new Nissan Versa, which was no fun to drive but got the job done. No line to pickup the car at midnight, and no wait to return it at 1PM. Friendly staff. Insurance and car upgrades were of course offered, but we didn't get a hard sell. (Remember kids, your regular car insurance sometimes covers you! Make sure you fill out a damage chart before you go!) Good job Alamo! read more

Hotwire got me a reasonable rate on a car and the company awarded was Alamo. Unfortunately, the BWI tariffs and fees are some of the most onerous in the country. $24 dollars for the rental, $28 dollars taxes and fees. Okay airport real estate is expensive, but at BWI do you get what you pay for?...: After enduring the standing room only "BWI All Rental Car Company Facility" bus for a 15 minute ride, I was disappointed to wait in line for 15 more minutes while the only Alamo employee worked frantically checking customers in. All this while the 2 Alamo self-serv kiosks were out of order. I had reserved an economy car for the gas mileage. After I declined to pay to "upgrade" I was given papers to take outside. I was spontaneously "upgraded" to a 20 mpg(not really) Chevy Impala. As some other reviews have noted, no mention is made of the importance of the inspection form. I filled it out. Car was clean and worked fine. However, when I returned the car, (Alamo is the last farthest area) there was a VERY thorough inspection for damage before I received my receipt. Fill out your form carefully before leaving the lot and keep a copy. As in other reviews, the Enterprise line was longer than Alamo's, thought Enterprise was always closed on weekends. Wonder why their line was so much longer...seemed to be moving though. Overall I give the Alamo experience three stars, good car although not what I reserved, okay service because of the poor kiosk maintenance and staffing. But I give the BWI Alamo two stars for really bad value for the fees and charges versus the extraordinary amount of additional time to get and return the car. I travel to Baltimore at least once a month for approx 5 days at a time. Alamo is my preferred car rental vendor at BWI. They usually have the best price (or very close to it) and their check out/return process is the fastest. I never stand in line to start a rental. Like being able to choose my own car (although they rarely have a big selection - there's always a lack of available cars but I've never been denied a car). The best thing about Alamo @ BWI is they are not Enterprise, where you're passed from 'Executive in Training' to 'Executive in Training', each time slowing the process down. I want to get my car, leave, return it quickly, and leave. Alamo does that for me quickly and at the best price. They are also typically pretty efficient at taking care of frequent flyer credits quickly & efficiently. read more

I usually rent with Alamo, but this was my first time in Baltimore. I used the kiosk to check in and in the garage their was someone waiting to take me to a vehicle. I will say I am from Atlanta and you have a row of vehicles to choose from in Atlanta. Here there was inky one compact car. The gentleman put my suitcase in for me. When I got in the car I did smell pee and I got right back out. While grabbing my luggage the sweetest gentleman Richard came by. He automatically upgraded my vehicle and I was on the move in less than two minutes. The exit agent was very friendly as well. I had a great experience here and recommend it to anyone. read more

Service here was terrible, even before we saw the car they tried to foist off on us. They tried to rent me a car that had Florida plates and had not been washed. It had a big spider web, or some sort of white sac, on the hood. Closer inspection turned up small insect sacs all around the exterior. We did not look inside it. I have generally had good experience with Alamo in the past so this was an unexpectedly bad branch location. read more

Making a reservation was easy, and painless - but my rental was tacked with a number of fees that were not mentioned up front! My quoted price on Kayak nearly doubled. Yes - I understand that there is an added cost to upgrading the class of vehicle - but there were other fees tacked on that I wish I had known from the beginning. Drop off was kind of a pain because they were under staffed. A number of people dropped off at the same time, and were not sure what to do because no one was checking in cars. Finally, only one person showed up. It was irritating because people were trying to make their flights and people were just stuck with their car keys. read more

Case in point arrived in LasVegas, night and day difference. The staff was energetic and bubbly, I was directed at every step of the way until I made my final car selection. Nice compact car-loved the ergonomic seats which were comfortable, even for two tall people. Good gas mileage on our trip to and from Williamsburg. Our rate through Priceline was competitive and Customer Service was good. Quick set up using the kiosk when we picked up the car and very easy return. Only complaint was from my wife, who wished for a mirror on the passenger side's visor. And I am used to standard equipment including a compass on the mirror. My experience with Alamo was fantastic! It was affordable. Both the pick-up and drop-off processes were easy. Everyone was so friendly and helpful! I reserved an economy car (such as a Kia Rio), but they upgraded me (at no charge) to a Hyundai Sonata. The car was brand new (only ~1700 miles on it and still had the new car smell), very clean, and had a full tank of gas. They offered a toll pass and GPS (I happened to not need either, but I appreciated it nevertheless). I originally paid the $19 for gas (that way, you don't have to fill up the tank), but I ended up filling up myself for less than the that, so they removed the $19 charge with no problems. In summary, I had a great experience! I would absolutely choose to rent from them again, and I highly recommend them! read more

I booked a car through Priceline at the rate of $10/day, when I got there I had a small chat with one of the staff about the weather and he told me it is gonna snow so I decided to upgrade to an SUV that is 4x4. They explicitly stated 4x4 on the receipt and I also told the parking attendant to make sure she is getting me a 4x4. Long story short I ended up in a compass and drove away to Virginia. After 60 miles of driving, I was curious to find how to engage all 4 wheels and surprisingly found out that the car is not 4x4. So I paid twice as much as I intended and ended up driving a garbage jeep for a couple of days. Moral of the story: always make sure you're getting what you're paying for. read more

I use Alamo a lot for my rentals. They are great. The problem lies when you leave something in your car. I left prescription glasses. When I realized the car had already been cleaned and re rented. My stuff was put into lost and found. Come to find out, only one lady holds the key to this mystery room. She was not on location at the time. Told me to call and leave detailed voicemail. If they don't call, that means they didn't find anything. Day three I talked to this key holder and said my glasses would be at the Alamo desk. Nope! So I sat patiently waiting over 30 min for them. Finally got them! So deff don't leave your passport. read more

Alamo has got to be the WORST rental car company in the entire world! The professionalism is lacking and the quality of the vehicle I rented was less than adequate. What's worse is that Alamo is attempting to scam me by processing triple charges to my credit card for a single rental transaction. The customer service department disconnected me and transferred me to inappropriate departments. When I was finally able to reach a service person she said it would be corrected within 24 hours. I checked my credit account this morning and another charge was processed! Now I have to go through unnecessary steps to have my credit card company handle it. *sigh* Burn me once, shame on you. For over 10 year I have always chosen Alamo for my rental cars. Booked a 1 way rental at this location (BWI) for a short drive to the other side of MD. The rental started off as usual with the pressure to upgrade the car, take all sorts of insurance, prepaid gas etc. I declined as usual and the manager popped up and asked if I would mind taking a mini van since they had a surplus of them. I was only driving it a short distance so I said why not. The way alamo works is you choose your own car, keys are in it. You stop at a tollbooth on the way out and they record which car you took. No damage inspections or anything like that. Its always been a good system, much faster than most rental companies. I drove the van straight to the gas station to fill it up and then to an Enterprise car rental location that also accepts Alamo cars (Enterprise now owns Alamo and National) The people inside took my keys, asked me for the mileage and sent me on my way. They never looked at the van and I wasn't concerned since I didn't even leave it unattended for a second, driving it from point a to point b, stopping only for gas. Fast forward 2 weeks later I receive a letter from the "Damage Recover Unit" of Alamo stating there is a Damage to the vehicle I rented and they want either my personal car insurance info or my credit card insurance info so they can process a claim. Nowhere in this paperwork do they give ANY details about price, damage, pictures, or anything but they expect me to send them all sorts of info. I emailed them about this issue and they replied that they are looking into it. In the meantime I started googling this damage recovery unit and discovered that this is standard business practice for Alamo / Enterprise / National. Try searching online I did and found literally hundreds of people with the exact same story. Apparently people that don't take the additional insurance are now being SCAMMED by Alamo into paying for previous damage or non existant damage. Its hard to say if the van had damage, but I certainly didn't do it. I have since cancelled my future rentals and told everyone I can about this story. I cannot believe how widespread this is, only with Enterprise and its subsidiaries. Its obviously fraud and it needs to be stopped. Renter beware, if you do business with these companies or any, do a walk around, document everything, videotape and take pics of everything at the time of rental and return. I rented a car with Alamo in February, 2011. My reservation was via Priceline at a very reasonable rate which I was pleased about. Following my check in, I was provided with a dirty, muddy car. Presumably, it was on purpose to cover up any damages. Shame on me for not looking more closely as I rent frequently and generally have never had an issue. But this time, I did not notice scratches/damage to the right rear bumper. Upon returning the car, a team of no less than three (3) Alamo employees swooped in on me to identify the damage. I knew it was not caused by me and denied having done so. The manager walked up to me and stated, "it's no big deal-- we can take care of it and buff it out. This is normal procedure." and attempted to assure me it would not be an issue. They were attempting to scam me and hold me responsible for damages I did not cause. A few weeks later I received a letter to my home with an estimate for damages. I first called the location directly and asked to speak with the manager. Instead, I was referred to their collection unit. The agent over the phone at the location even stated, "Trust me. Most customers just submit it to their insurance to make it go away. That's what management hopes will happen." I sent several dispute letters to their collection unit with my rebuttal as to what happened including e-mails as well as the comments from the employees at the location. Alamo merely sent a responsle letter saying they were investigating my claim and would get back to me. I never heard from them. Following that, I received a collection letter. I refused to pay and currently am in mid-dispute with a collector over the charges. Avoid them at all costs. They will attempt to try and scam you into paying for things you aren't responsible for. I've learned my lesson and will never rent with this company again. read more

Rented through Priceline and was awarded a good deal from Alamo on January 25, 2011. That is where the good deal stopped. The Alamo agent did not give a form to check status of the vehicle when I rented the car - he did not even walk out to the car with me, just told me to take whichever one I wanted. But the agent went over the car very closely when I returned. I have been issued a nondescript claim for a 1.5 inch scratch that I had not been able to see when I rented due to water spots on the car. Coincidentally this was the time of a huge snow storm in the Baltimore area. I am sure the return staff were told to check extra hard for possible scratches that could have been caused by the heavy snow challenges people faced. read more
