Alamo at Richmond Int'l Airport, you really let me down! And cost me a $65 Uber Ride as well. We booked a car rental with Alamo. Our flight into Richmond Int'l Airport ended up being delayed several times. I called Alamo to make sure that we would still be able to get our car rental after we landed (because we would be landing after closing hour.) I called TWICE just to make sure and was reassured both times that Alamo's policy was to wait up till 2 hrs past closing for customers because they were aware of our flight delay. They told me on the phone that their agents at the airport would wait up to 2 hrs because they were aware of our flight number (on file). When we landed at 1am...we rushed to the counter...no one was there. We went to the outside parking garage...no one was there. I called Alamo again and they told me that the airport board showed our flight had landed at 9:20 pm (which is ridiculous) and the only way we would be able to get a car would be at 7am (when Alamo reopens). We ended up having to take an expensive Uber to our destination. No car to drive. Alamo basically lied to me several times on the phone...telling me someone would be available to help with car rental after hours, when no one was there. Why lie? They very specifically stated they would wait up to 2 hrs. I would give this location 0 stars if I could for being dishonest about policy. read more

How this company stays in business with how they treat their customers is beyond me. My story is long: Rented a full size car on a Wednesday night from this location. Thursday night all was fine with the car when I parked it. Friday morning- reversed out of driveway and immediately multiple issues started flashing on the dashboard including a giant malfunction sign in yellow. There was an odd sound. Thought maybe it was just really cold and sensors were off but as soon as I accelerated the car was giving a jerky motion. Spent the next 6 hours being lied to by Alamo corporate and local locations as they send me of a wild goose chase trying to find a replacement car and get this one towed, causing me to miss an event that day. When I called in to report the malfunction I was told a tow truck would come retrieve the car and I could go to the local branch to get an exchange car. I called the local branch and was told repeatedly they had no cars to give me and to not go there. I repeatedly called customer service and was told to go there anyway and they were required to give me a car. Local branch told me "we have no cars, if you come here you'll just sit all day and wait". Why is it my job to go back and forth between local branches and corp to find a car? Then was told my case was being escalated to "upper management" and I would receive a call shortly. No call ever came. Called corp again and was told the case was resolved and a car was waiting for me at the local branch. Called the local branch and told no one from corp ever called them, they still had no cars and it wasn't going to change. Finally spoke with another, further location and they had one car- a compact I could take. Of course I can't get it until my car is on the tow truck and the tow truck is hours late. So I get to sit and wait. Finally the car is towed and I have someone drive me to the branch with the compact car. It's a shit show because they have no record of my car having an issue and nothing is in their system. Finally one of workers hears the convo and says she spoke to me on the phone and the compact car in the lot is for me. They hand me the keys- no paperwork, they didn't even point to where the car was parked, I had to go find it. When I went to return the compact at the airport they had no idea about the exchange or the issues. Took awhile to figure it all out, luckily I assumed I would have problems and went to the airport early. the guy apologized for the issues and offered a 1 day refund. Hardly enough for the nightmare they caused but whatever. He printed out my receipt, it did show a discount but it also showed a remaining balance- for the amount of the discount. I asked why it was there and he insisted "it's ok, you don't owe anything". Well guess what happened? A few days later my credit card was recharged for the "discount". So I got to pay hundreds of dollars to have my vacation ruined and got lied to every step of the way. When I got a text from Alamo asking me how my trip was and to take a survey I shared my issues. I was told to expect a call to discuss further. I'm sure you can guess by now no one has called me. You're a garbage company and I'll be sure to let everyone I work with know to never trust you and share my story. read more

I feel like leaving one star is the only way Alamo will listen to my disappointment, and I just want to be heard. I had a car reserved at the airport for 12:30am. When I arrived to my connecting flight that got delayed an hour, I called Alamo to ask how this would affect my pickup. I got passed around to different people and their supervisors for around 30 minutes until three different people had assured me, confirmed, and promised that Alamo was aware of my delayed arrival and would wait for me past their closing time. One even gave me an incident number and I wondered if it meant anything. (Guess it didn't?) Each of these people also told me that Alamo's policy is to give a two-hour window. I didn't expect this when their offices close at 1am, but I was told repeatedly. Since I didn't really buy that, I kept asking if they stay after hours. Yes, I was told. Yes. Yes. Yes. Promise. Well, surprise surprise that nobody was there waiting for me. Not a single person to be found. I called and someone who knows where was like yep I guess the office is closed? Ummm thanks. The thing is, they said they'd wait. So now I'm on an insanely expensive taxi ride an hour away and there will be no rental car at all, which makes a huge impact on my budget and plans this week. I recognize this is a first world problem. I'm lucky to be able to rent a car to begin with. But for me there's nothing like a broken promise. If they had just told me they'll be closed or can't help me, I'd completely understand. Not everything works all the time. I'm just so wildly disappointed that the company trains people to make promises they have no authority to keep, there's no direct communication with the local office and customers, and the whole phone journey was absolutely bogus. Lady beside me was 9 minutes early - they tried to raise her daily rate by $6.04 per day. - Man in front of me had to return his car because charger didn't work. - Next lady exchanged her car because the oil change light was on. - And my key literally broke off when I hit the release button!!! Getting gang-raped in the shower of a third world prison would be a better experience than renting from Alamo. I reserved a luxury car more than a week in advance of a long trip with my daughter. When I arrived, my car was not available. The only options they had were for a smaller class vehicle, not something comparable. What's the point of a reservation? When I returned the vehicle I forgot my toll transponder on the windshield. I called on my way home, and Mary stated she was putting notes in my record, and instructed me to return the next day to pick it up. When I returned, no one knew what I was talking about. I went to the garage counter and the guy took my name and number. He said his boss would call me the next day. This was a 70 mile round trip waste of time. The next day, no one called. No calls the day after that. I contacted Alamo customer service (Ha!) online and was instructed to fill out a claim on a lost and found web site. I did this 5 days ago and STILL have not been contacted. No info is available on the lost and found site. Every time I reply to Alamo I get a scripted apology and a different answer. None of which are useful, and still no call from anyone. I would rather walk barefoot through broken glass covered in feces and hepatitis before renting from Alamo again. They are the absolute worst. read more

We rented through Costco for a car at Richmond Int'l airport. We got a GMC Traverse, because we were going to be spending a lot of time on the road, and wanted to enjoy it. The car was spotless, and the process was very smooth. Returning the car was a breeze. I will say that on picking up the car, the one agent that Alamo had, was talking to a single customer for going on 15 minutes, although he could see he had three other people in line. Finally an agent from another car rental took care of all of us. read more

SHADY! I rented a car back in September from this location, everything was great until I realized I had left my coat in the back seat of the car. At this point we were already halfway to Atlanta so I called as soon as we landed to let Alamo Richmond Airport know (within an hour). They took down my information on 09/29/18 and that was it. I followed up on 09/30, 10/03, 10/05, and 10/08, I was told it hadn't been found, I filed a complaint with corporate that same day to try to get some results. I finally received a call from Alamo Richmond Airport on 10/11 letting me know that the coat had appeared and that my card on file would be charged for the shipping fee. Almost two weeks went by and my card still had not been charged and no coat, so I called again on 10/22, 10/25, and today 10/30. Still no coat, only getting the run around from Alamo, repeatedly being told that Mishawn the Lost & Found manager will get back to me. At this point it is beyond unprofessional as they engage in shady business practices. It's been one month of trying to get a $120 coat back that was reported missing within the hour and reportedly found. At this point it should be considered PETIT LARCENY if they are in possession of the coat and refusing to turn it over to keep it. They really need to re-evaluate the type of employees they hire. read more

We had some troubles with flat tire through no fault of our own.. Alamo charged us $75 and we had to fight it because Volkswagen said the car rental was still under warranty... Took them 3 hours to help repair.. We kept telling our credit card company to reject the charge but they continued to charge us.. Worst car rental I've ever had. I went on Priceline and found the best deal which was 173 ' for the week and a day. At the end of it it was over $325 The counterperson said that even though my USAA insurance covered me if anything happened Virginia is a no fault state so they would take every penny they could get if I used my USAA insurance. Still I paid for the insurance and they said they would only cover $3000. Car was OK - the rest was not. Never Alamo again. I was screwed total bill was over $325 for 8 days with insignificant mileage. Felt very cornered to get additional services. Also many extra fees and taxes added that you never knew about. I had a reservation for a compact car. When I came to pick up the car, they told me that there were no compact cars left. This happens, and when it has happened in the past the rental agency has offered me an intemediate-sized car at the original price. I'm not thrilled when this happens, as there are gasoline and parking disadvantages to larger cars, but I'm used to it. I rent cars at an airport about three times per year, and once a year or so they give me the free mandatory upgrade. If Richmond Alamo had done that I would have been modestly annoyed but not nearly upset enough to write an unfavorable review. Not so for this rental. They offered me a choice with three alternatives: 1: Accept an SUV 2: Accept a minivan 3: Accept an intermediate-sized car, AND PAY $20/DAY EXTRA. I accepted the SUV --- which turned out to be a frigging pickup truck. The truck barely fit in the hotel parking lot [which had a six-foot ceiling]. I would have expected Alamo to send me out in one of the intermediate-sized cars at the originally agreed-to price, like every rental agency I have ever used has done when they run out of compacts. I get it that they prefer to run out of compacts than out of intermediates, since a compact customer can be somewhat satisfied with an intermediate but not vice versa, but I didn't expect a huge premium for this change at their request. I'm not sure it's corporate. I think the clerk at the desk gets comissions or at least performance review upgrades for successful upsells. The reason I think that is that they tried very hard to upsell me for Collision Damage Wavier and GPS and pre-purchase of a full tank of gas. I think he wanted a successful upsell of a vehicle size category for a substitution he would have been required to make anyway. I called Corporate when I returned from my trip. I wanted $20/day compensation, the amount they tried to upsell me, to compensate me for the white-knuckled experience I had getting into and out of the hotel parking lot with about two inches of clearance. Corporate swore that clerks do not get rewarded for upsells, but they wouldn't give me any compensation for my bad experience. They could have at least given me some reward points, which would at least have shown that they were of a mind to do something to make me a bit less unhappy. -dk read more

My mother's cumbersome rather, expensive metal walker/wheelchair was left in the back seat of an SUV rented by her friend at the Alamo Car Rental - Richmond Airport. (The reason - she had to go to emergency room and they provided her a wheelchair so hers was unfortunately forgotten & left in the back seat of his rental car.) Can you imagine they would not have found it? Not as if it were a pearl earring or something small. Their Lost & Found process is abysmal. But they have replied to my online registration of the lost item (which includes the car VIN number so they certainly could follow where the car is), saying they haven't found it. The only way staff there could not have found it meant they never cleaned out the vehicle after it was turned in, otherwise, they WOULD have. Supposing they actually did find it, but they're saying they haven't, then you can guess what happened to it. My mother needs this medical device to help her get around and it will be a hardship ($) to replace. Unbelievable. read more

The man that helped me was very kind and helped me get the best price. I booked an economy car with Payless through Expedia and was quoted ~$150 for 5 days only to be told at the counter that they didn't have any cars for me and was sent to the Avis desk where the person was very rude and also quoted me $350 for an economy car for 5 days. She said she wouldn't accept same day bookings so I couldn't go on Expedia to get a lower rate. I wasn't going to pay that. I went to the Alamo counter and talked to the man and he quoted me a price and I asked if it would be cheaper if I booked through Expedia and he told me to go ahead and try that. I booked through Expedia and was quoted $230 for 5 days. (This doesn't include the $25 a day charge extra for being under 25.) He was able to lower that price to $215 or so and when I was ready to sign he told me not to because he thought he could get the price a little lower. The total ended up being $202 for 5 days and I was not charged an under 25 age fee. I highly recommend Alamo and will rent from them again. I'd also like to add that since they were out of economy cars I was upgraded to a Chrysler 200 which was great. read more

I recently rented a vehicle out of the RIC Alamo location. When checking in for my vehicle, I was helped by a representation from National, who apparently wasn't having such a great day as her attitude showed it. On my rental agreement, I noticed that the total amount I was quoted was different than what I had booked via Costco. I asked to have the reservation canceled out and reopened as I was told because I checked in ELEVEN MINUTES EARLY, I had to pay approximately six extra dollars! The rep with whom I dealt with wouldn't close out and reopen my ticket even though I had not been to the vehicle yet. To make a long story short, I was told by the manager that they would fix the problem when I dropped the vehicle off. Well, the day came and I did drop off the vehicle. The manager did as they said and made sure that the total on the receipt I was given matched my reservation I had made via Costco. Great! Now, looking at my credit card statement for the charge, I see that I was CHARGED MORE than what my receipt was for and did not authorize an amount which was above the total amount on the receipt. I ended up calling Alamo (their national number) and was redirected to the local branch at RIC. When I was able to speak with someone, I ask if this was the local branch and of course, it was the national number...again. Now, I have called in six times and let the phone ring - nobody will pick up and the phone stops ringing. Way to go Alamo! I definitely will pay more next time and stick to a vendor that is honest and has ethics they actually follow. read more

However, i was charged for extra three days even though i returned the car on time. Its been over a month since i am calling and none of the branch manger are taking of this matter. Why is it when you rent a car they never seem to have the car you rented? You end up upgrading which is great as long as you don't need it longer. Rates changes drastically and customer service is awful. Weekly rates automatically increases the price. My next rental will not be through them. I've rented cars many times before for trips back home to Richmond from Boston and for business trips. We got a good deal for a sedan from Alamo for our 4th of July trip so we decided to take it. Upon arriving at the desk, Irving, the associate working at the desk, greeted me kindly and welcomed me back home. Seeing I had everything he needed to process my rental he noticed I had rented cars before and was working to ensure my repeat business. Irving listed my car options which included a sedan we requested and other cars such as a mustang and a SUVs. I opted for the SUV and Irving had me sign and initial the paperwork where he had marked. I left happy. The SUV I received was a bit scratched and had its maintenance light on. I overlooked this seeing it was a free upgrade. However, I was wrong. Upon returning the car we noticed we were charged about $90 for upgrading our vehicle from a sedan to a SUV. I was not happy. I was not informed that there was going to be additional charges for selecting a SUV. If I knew I there was additional charges I would have said no thanks. Further, if I was going to pay more, i would have insisted that my vehicle be less scratched and ready to be driven not ready to be put in the shop. I was not happy, but since we needed to catch our flight home I did not have time to dispute the charges that day. The situation with Alamo left me feeling swindled. I am now cautious about recommending Alamo to others. read more

Hired a Nissan Pathfinder for four days in Richmond. The service at the check in desk was particularly slow and the car was a little dusty which was glaringly obvious given that it was a black car, but other than that nothing else to complain about. Furthermore at checkout said I would return it at least 1day early and was told the charge would be prorated for the last day. I will never use Alamo again during this lifetime. read more

I typically rent from Alamo and have no issues. Richmond airport Alamo provides decent car options (not many luxury options) and not bad customer service... Until this last experience! I returned my car about 11:30pm and there was a line of about 20 people waiting to pick up cars and 3 people returning cars. All of this with only ONE associate! Booked online with Alamo with an Insiders discount and upgrade. May have been able to get a lower price through hotwire or one of the other booking agents, but I like dealing directly. The wait in line took maybe 20 minutes due to only one clerk for both National and Alamo customers, but all went fairly smooth. Got the car size promised at the price promised and we were on our way in less than 30 minutes. I would like to mention that the car was actually clean and I could see clearly through the windows because they had been cleaned. So many times renting cars I've had to stop at a service station to clean windows inside and out due to water spots outside and a film inside. Overall great experience. read more

I've had two very troubling interactions with this company. In both circumstances, I was overcharged by quite a bit for the car I rented. The first time, I got it fixed after the fact, using their customer service, and I decided it was a fluke and that I'd try them again. For the second rental, I had a detailed quote for $71.90. I was picking up the car and returning it exactly as specified on the quote, and did not upgrade the car or add any extras like insurance. As I was about to sign the paperwork, I asked for the total. It was twice what I'd been quoted! I had to wait for a long time (holding up the line behind me), while it was fixed. In the end, though, they didn't have the car I wanted, and I cancelled and got one from a competitor at the same airport. The other company charged me, to the penny, exactly what I'd been given as an estimate. I think I'll avoid Alamo in the future as it is not worth the hassle. Unless both incidents were really random mistakes, it seems to me that they make their money by overcharging unwary customers who don't look carefully at the paperwork. read more

Dishonest! We got a quote through Hotels.com with Car Trawler for 394.43. When we went to pick it up, we were told the total due was 519.43. Even though the quote we got said the charges included taxes and incidentals, we were told that was the difference. We wanted to add a driver quoted at $10 per day and the young lady at the Alamo desk in SLC said it was $15 per day plus tax. She said we only had a quote, not a voucher. After over 30 minutes of trying to negotiate we asked to speak with a manager and got several excuses of why we couldn't. Finally got the manager and she was kind enough to adjust the charge to our quote but it's what she said that most shocked me. I apologized for holding up the line since it was obvious the 20+ people waiting were not happy (there were only 2 employees handling rentals on a busy Sat. afternoon). Theresa, the manager, said that the customers should not expect good service if they got nasty. We will never use them again! read more
