The guy who turned my car in was pleasant but made a mistake and I did not catch it until later. There was something wrong with the rental and I had to go to the kiosk to get it sorted out. Along the way, he noted that the gas tank was only half full and he added a charge of $52 to my receipt. I did not spot it until the evening and so I had to go to the trouble of contacting Avis, providing the receipt from the gas station (which I fortunately still had) and then wait until they issued a new receipt. Dozens of people waiting in line and two people working the desk. Each customer took about twenty minutes to service. A prominent high school competition beginning this weekend saw groups of coaches and students arriving in Richmond from all over the country, and many rental car reservations placed simultaneously. One would assume that Avis would have been better prepared for the flood of customers, but the line snaked around to baggage claim and moved (is still moving) painfully slowly. It's been almost two hours and I have moved about 12 feet. Some customers cancelled their reservations and crossed the lobby to the far less congested alternative rental locations. Surely this is a management issue rather than the individual employees. *Edit: After all that time waiting, we were informed that their system was down (which, after reading other reviews, it seems their system has been "down" for over six months). The employee's response to frustrated customers was "It's not my problem." On top of that, they had overbooked themselves, with many of the people there seeking large passenger vans. I tried Avis for the first time at Richmond international airport, because their price was better than the competitors. It took three tries to get a decent car and then the Nissan rogue I was given was filthy on the highway after every pothole and pump sounded like metal scraping against metal, and generally felt like an unstable vehicle that was in need of maintenance. I spent hours at my destination in Fredericksburg, trying to swap the car out to no avail. Finally, I called the roadside assistance people, which also took five calls and organized a tow truck to come and pick it up. The tow truck. driver was the best I ended up, renting from enterprise, car, rental in Fredericksburg, and true to form good customer service, decent vehicle no surprises. Your RIC location is 1. Understaffed 2. Underprepared 3. Uncourteous 4. Unprofessional My 5 pm vehicle pickup happened at 7:30 pm because of Avis' incompetence. First, the reservation counter has 1 or maybe 2 staff available on a holiday weekend to cater a crowd of over 15 reservations. It took me over 45 MINUTES to get to the front. After this, the agent told me they only had a Chevy Suburban or Ford Expedition available instead of the minivan I had originally booked several days ago. Second, the pickup counter is a huge f-ing mess. Extremely rude staff who weren't the least bit helpful until I started going on a rant. The car I got was not clean so I asked for a different vehicle. Agent there said "okay but it will be a while- we don't have any cars right now and I don't know what's being prepared because I don't work in the lot". In my opinion, if you don't work in the lot, you should know who on your team does. Then call them and find out. Regardless, I waited patiently as the line kept growing and one of the two agents then closed their window in my face when I went to follow up after 20. They then proceeded to leave from the back and disappeared for a good 25-30 minutes. I asked their colleague if I could have the same car I was offered before to which I was told "the other agent is handling that. I'm not sure what to do. He also just left for the day." So, basically, I paid for a car in advance, was extremely patient with the whole process and at the end, I get a "not my job" reply?! Ultimately the original agent comes back with the same car saying he washed & vacuumed it- which is total BS because there still was trash inside the car that I had to remove later. This was by far the WORST experience I have had at a rental car company in the 4 years I've been in the US. If I could give zero stars I would. I prepaid for a premium suv (Ford Expedition Max or equivalent). The booking was for December 29, 2025 at 0800 hours. I could not reach this particular Avis because their phone number is not any good. I contacted the Avis in Chester, VA. They confirmed that the Richmond, VA location had the vehicle I requested for the time and date I requested. I paid for the vehicle. Fast forward to my pickup time... I was told the vehicle I have paid for and reserved was not available. Instead, they offered me a Chrysler Pacifica. We own the same exact Chrysler Pacifica. I rented the Expedition Max or equivalent for the extra room. We have five children and were loaded with Christmas presents. So, because of THEIR error, I paid for a rental for a vehicle that we ALREADY own. I travel often. I rent cars often. This is my first and LAST time with Avis. The young lady at the register had no empathy and no solution. I had to stand there and call the 1-800 customer service number to cancel the original reservation for the vehicle I already paid for and make a new reservation. This was the worst customer service of any company I have ever dealt with. I wish I would have seen all of the negative reviews ahead of time. It would have saved me a lot of headache. read more

I don't usually rate or leave any comments to companies but I had such a bad experience with this car rental company that I had to say something. I had already booked it online, paid everything in full and made a reservation for 9 am but they had a long line and only two workers so I didn't get the car until like 10:15 am which made us late for our trip. The car they gave us was dirty and smelled a little so you could tell they didn't clean it. It was also really bad on gas mileage. We returned the vehicle that same night at around 11 pm and there was a sign that said to leave the key in the car but they didn't check the car in until 9 am then next morning. They charged our credit card about $140 and didn't send in a receipt explaining what was going on so we had to call customer service to see what was going on. They claimed that we did not put any gas in the car and that there were additional taxes and fees that we didn't pay when we picked up the car even though this was never mentioned when I went to pick up the car. When we called the customer service representative to dispute the issue they just stated that we needed to send in a receipt to prove we paid for gas but that it might take a while for them to dispute the issue and that there is no guarantee we would get refunded the amount. They also stated that the additional taxes and fees applied will not be removed even though they never notified us and we already paid the taxes and fees in full when we picked up the car per the contract that was signed. I have rented cars from various companies over the years and have NEVER had any issues with any of them. I'm so disappointed because I have never had such bad service/experience in my life! Today, February 14, 2025, at 10am, we landed at the Richmond Va airport. We had a written confirmed reservation for an suv with Avis. When we got to the auto rental counter we were told there are no cars and the wait would be 1 hour+. We were told that we are no. 18 on the wait list for a car. We were able to obtain a rental car from another rental company at the airport at twice the expense. I would not recommend Avis as they have apparently no concern for their customers. read more

If I could leave this review with no stars I would. This Avis location in particular is the very worst. I flew in for a weekend function arriving at 2 pm. The first car, which I reserved weeks in advance especially for the occasion, the check engine light came on and never left. Had to return it. The second car they gave me the breaks were very unstable and shook when I put pressure on the breaks. Had to return that car. Finally they gave me a car I would never intentionally rent but had no choice. It took 2 trips back to the airport and 4 hours going back and forth on the Highways to get a safe car from this Avis/Richmond International airport. Unfortunately I did not look into the reviews before renting. This Avis has a 1.5 star rating. It's obvious they do not service the cars regularly. That is not good when you are paying upwards of $50 to $80 dollars a day for these cars. The breaks are faulty, check engine lights coming on and most of the cars if not all are just plain filthy. They clearly could not give a rats a** what condition the car is in when they hand over the keys to you. They tell you to call road side but then the number rings out and or spontaneously hangs up. I never got a person on the phone with roadside. If you call customer service (which I did) you get some young person from a different country who really couldn't care less telling you the obvious. The whole experience was pretty awful. I highly recommend NOT renting from Avis RIC. read more

This review applies to Avis in general, not only to the RIC location or a particular local employee. As a long-time Avis Preferred customer it's been sad and aggravating to experience the deterioration of telephone customer service. The outsourcing to non-U.S. based customer reps is all-too-obvious. In many instances they are difficult or impossible to understand when they speak, and they aren't able to discern my issues. They read from a script and that's all they can do (is this AI???). This has accelerated over the last 2-3 years. Avis, please discontinue the satellite radio option, because most of the time is doesn't work and vehicles that are supposed to have actually DO NOT. When I call the agents to activate the Sirius radio they still insist that I have a portable satellite unit in my car even when I explain to them that I don't have one. I haven't seen one of those units in an Avis vehicle in at least 10 years! And then they tell me that I have to return to the rental site to activate it, after I've already driven 50 miles away (W-T-F?!?!) My recent rental was very dirty on the outside, and the agent told me that on-site car wash had frozen, but they never offered me another vehicle or a discount. These bad experiences have been mounting up and I'm seriously considering just using up my points for the next rental and then be done with Avis. It just shouldn't be this hard to get respectable, competent service, and it's getting worse seeming with each rental. Rented a vehicle 9/11-9/24 and the vehicle was fine. However, I just received a letter from AVIS stating that there was "excessive dirt-sand" and will be charged $125 for cleaning. I called customer service and they said pictures show dirt and sand, but the customer rep admits that he does not feel as if I hauled dirt or sand in the car, to which my response was "because I didn't haul dirt or sand in the car." I even told the rep when I turned the vehicle in, the agent even walked around the car and looked in it and said "everything looks good" and printed out my receipt and gave it to me. After 4 1/2 hours I finally made it to the counter. I was assigned a car and sent to the garage, where I had to wait another 30 min. to get the key to the car. 5 hours to get a rental car that you had a reservation is ridiculous!! DO NOT TRUST AVIS! I rented a Jeep 4 door from Avis and paid a little extra for it (2 day difference was only like $20 more and since I drive a jeep and we needed the space it seemed like a good deal. When we got to the counter we were informed that there were no jeeps and that they could give us a Nissan Rogue. We said we would really prefer something bigger as the rogue is not as big as the jeep, but were told that was all they had and that they were in the same class and price. I said that the Rogue is actually in the intermediate SUV class which costs less and she told me i was wrong. It was 930 at night so not wanting to argue about a little bit of money, we took the car and left. I have since been in touch with AVIS who now admits that they are not the same class and the pricing was different. (No Kidding: I have looked every day at numerous locations thru Expedia and Avis sites to make sure I am not mistaken and the Rogue is $10-$20 cheaper every day on both sites) BUT they are trying to claim on that day at that airport that the Rogue was actually $32 more! LOL! Everyday, everywhere the Jeep costs more and yet on this one day I got lucky and the Jeep was more? I admitted that i didn't have proof (I certainly could not have known I would need to take screenshots as I never imagined they would lie like this), but come on? Lying to a customer when everyday the website shows a higher price for the Jeep and then trying to cover up their mistakes, lazy employees and their lies? Terrible. I'm disappointed that no one I have spoken to at Avis takes the issue of their employee lying to a customer as serious as I would have expected, but I guess they assume most customers wont take the time and effort to share their story of being scammed.
