The bottom line ... Positives: The atmosphere here is great-ish ... It feels like a roadhouse where you can get some relief from a hot day while coming in and having a few beers with friends. Good music on the playlist. Negatives: The food is, at best, average ... despite shockingly high prices, even in the hyper inflationary 2020's. You'll notice in the parking lot ... Lots of jacked up pick-up trucks, classic muscle cars, etc. The crowd here is as you'd expect for the border of NH and blue collar MA. The best way to describe the average clientele would be hard drinking, loud laughing 'Live Free or Die Massholes'. Upon entering, this place felt like a classic roadhouse ... dark and cave-like in places but with a large row of windows letting the sun flood into that particular area. It felt a little like a Texas desert Roadhouse in a shabby chic kind of way. The bar area is where I sat and right away, I was hot with the foul and pungent odor of years worth of spilled beer. You know that sour 'vinegar' smell that one would expect from a fraternity house carpet? It's here ... and it's bad. As John Taffer or Gordon Ramsay would scream ... This place needs a good cleaning! The beers here are $7 - $12 each, depending on what you get. They have some Michelob Light-esque draft specials. You are given the choice of 16 or 22 oz. beers and the glasses are chilled. Props for that. The bartender was a little frosty. He seemed more cordial to regulars ... but he was kind of short and matter of fact with me, at one point losing patience as I debated the menu and walked away mid-order without saying anything, only to return a few minutes later. The television situation was odd. The World Cup was on ... Every bar in the US was showing the games. Every television above the bar was broadcasting Keno numbers. Only one television, which was mounted on a side wall broadcasted the soccer game and to see it, everyone had to turn their head and look at a spot 6 inches above the bar top, so you were essentially staring right into the eyes of the people sitting next to you. Creepy. The food here was unfortunate. I think of places like Franklin BBQ in Texas and using 'Texas BBQ' to describe this place, after trying the food, is akin to the most egregious online dating exaggeration ever made. Imagine seeing a photo of a modelesque, jacked person with a full head of hair online ... and the person who showed up was a paunchy, middle-aged balding dude using pictures from 20 years ago. That's how expecting Texas BBQ ends up vs. what you actually get. There's nothing wrong with the food. It's edible ... which is more than some BBQ places can claim. However* it's all dry AF, probably smoked overnight ... taken out in the early morning ... and your brisket or pulled pork has been sitting for 6 - 8 hours under a heat lamp. The sides are made quickly ... the $7 Mac and cheese was basically spiral pasta with a white cheese sauce poured over it. Edible but I'd rather get freshly made Kraft Mac and Cheese. The $7 loaded tots ... a small cup of tater tots with a similar white cheese sauce drizzled over them and a couple of bacon bits on top. The $20 pulled pork was dry ... some big pieces, some chopped pieces. Based on other reviews I decided to avoid the more expensive brisket, which was probably a good move, given the dry pulled pork. I tasted (or smelled in the parking lot) no smokiness. As someone who lived in the South and often ate real BBQ ... You know it when you get the authentic stuff because you burp up smokey taste for the better part of the night after eating true roadside BBQ. This was more like Trader Joe's reheated BBQ. Food and restaurant costs are rising so fast these days, I have absolutely no idea what is normal and what is high. Based on other interactions with menus ... I believe these to be on the high side. $20 for a burger ... $20 - $30 for a single BBQ meat ... $15 - $25 for a BBQ sandwich ... $6 - $7 for a side. I had the pulled pork single meat, which came with two sides and a beer. My total, before tip, was $35. The bartender got a 20% tip, because that's my minimum. But he deserved maybe 10%. Beyond the somewhat dickish attitude ....he didn't ask or bring me any BBQ sauce (a necessity for the dry, bland meat) or Ketchup.. I had to walk over to a table and get some. He never checked in to see how my food was. No small talk ... no 'Can I get you anything else?'. Tipping culture in the US sucks because if you leave any less than 20% for bad service, you get chased into the parking lot. So that's my review in a nutshell. Would I return? Probably not ... unless I was meeting friends for beers. The food value just wasn't there for me. There seemed to be a lot of regulars, so it can't be all bad (although majority of other 3-star reviews seem accurate) The bottom line is that this is a better bar than a restaurant. The meats and sides were all good. We tried as much on the menu as three diners could manage. We opted to sit inside. There is also ample outdoor seating. Service was friendly but the reason I'm docking stars is that there wasn't enough of it. Our server dropped off food and then disappeared until we were finished. We had wanted another round of drinks mid-meal and ran out of water. So the restaurant missed out on 3 cocktails worth of revenue and the server on the associated tips for those drinks. It didn't seem busy but maybe they're understaffed. That said, I would be happy to return. read more

The first time me and my friend went here we got takeout and it was great! Then we decided to go back and sit down in the restaurant. The waitress took a bit to get our drinks. When we got our food the Mac and cheese was grainy tasting and slightly undercooked, compared to the first time we got it. My friend's fries were so overcooked they were like a chip. My friend asked for pickles as a side and there were no more whole slices (odd?) so instead of getting sliced dill pickles which were available she got nothing. Another got brisket and also dry. Ribs done perfect and tasty. The Corn bread was very good but a minuscule portion 1-1/2 square, (order as a side if u really want more than a tease). Four people got Margarita drinks and all said they were exceptionally weak, Barely taste the tequila .As a group we have been there before and no complaints. We traveled 45 min to meet friends there. Stopped in here for a late lunch with some friends. I have been to both Bailey's and Mariano's before and enjoyed my meals, so I figured I would like it here too. I don't know if they were just having an off day, but I thought the food was bad. We ordered the BBQ chicken nachos and Caesar salad which came out pretty quickly. The nachos would have been solid if we ordered them without the chicken. While the amount of chicken they gave us was generous, it was very dry and just not appetizing. The salad was at least fresh but they use large pieces of chopped cornbread as their croutons. I have never heard of that before, but I still tried it and did not care for it. It was a very strange combination that just didn't work. For my entrée I ordered the pulled pork mac & cheese. I have gotten the pulled pork mac & cheese from Bailey's and it was excellent, so I figured it would be the same or similar here. I literally never send food back; I am the type that will power through anything as long as its safe. but the mac & cheese that I got had clearly been sitting out for a while and was lukewarm throughout. The cheese sauce looked like it absorbed into the pasta, and the pork was piled on top in a dry/cold lump. I have worked in food service and understand the importance of holding food at the correct temp, and I didn't get the impression that the Alamo consistently does that. Our waitress was good about taking it off the bill and was apologetic. I might give them another chance someday because the service, atmosphere, and drinks were all great. read more

Family suggested this place (Disclaimer: I'm from Florida), raving about the chicken and waffles. I have to agree, the chicken and waffles were very good. In my case, my spice tolerance didn't allow me to enjoy the spice of the Sriracha maple syrup so it ended up tasting too sweet for my tastes. The loaded tots were my favorite, everything about them worked and was just a joy to eat. Unfortunately the baby back ribs have a poorly flavored rub and just tasted of smoke. They're also very tough making them a chore to eat. I also had shoestring fries and their BBQ chips for sides. The fries were good but the BBQ chips had no BBQ flavor oddly enough. My wife and I stopped by Alamo BBQ on cinco de mayo and were blown away by the quality of the food and service! We each had brisket and I had the burnt ends and house made BBQ chips as well. The meat was melt in your mouth delicious and the chips had sweet/salty bite with a little spice at the end. We sat at the bar and we were serenaded with live music from our era, and the tequila was half off. The bartender suggested we go top shelf so we picked the casa azul tequila. The 2 issues we had were of the 4 alcoholic beverages ordered on the first round - one tasted like the fruit juices had gone bad. We took one sip and told the waitress and she just responded that they already made it so we were out of luck but we could order an additional drink but they would have to charge us. Great solution. The worst part though was they closed at 8 which is fine but they don't serve ANYTHING past this point. After consuming a few alcoholic beverages we asked for a single cup of coffee. The waitress responded that they closed 15 minutes ago and can't sell another thing. A cup of coffee? No one came by and asked if we would like anything else before they closed out. My wife is a Texan and I've lived in San Antonio twice and Abilene while in the AF so I have a pretty good experience with authentic Texas barbecue. And to be fair, they do a good job. The menu is legit. I ordered the 2-meat combo with brisket and ribs - both were good with fair-sized servings. For sides I ordered fries and baked beans. A small square of jalapeño cornbread came on the side also. They were all decent. The wife ordered a sandwich... mixed pork and hamburger sort of thing. A Davy Crockett I think it was called. It was excellent but served on Texas toast which is not a traditional Texan way of serving a sandwich or burger. No big deal, it was pretty damn good, just had to eat it with a single slice of bread. For sides she ordered the cole slaw and it was just okay. The service brings down the overall score. I've had worse but the waitress and the gal working the bar made it pretty obvious my service and money were unimportant to them. I've never been to this restaurant - there are two entrances; one to the dining room and one to the saloon. I'm a saloon sort of guy so we took that door not knowing what to expect. That door enters directly into the saloon where a half-dozen or so regulars were there having a beer and relaxing. Another small group of guys who looked local were seated at a 4-top waiting for their food. There was nobody at the saloon door and I would also point out nobody at the dining room door had we opted for that entrance. So the wife and I walked around until we found a table we liked and sat there. the gal at the bar saw us come in. Would have been VERY appropriate for her so say something like, "sit anywhere you'd like, a server will be right out." It's not a large place at all. We were never acknowledged by the bartender. A waitress came out after a few minutes and asked if anyone had seated us. I joked that we 'snuck in,' and hoped we weren't in trouble. She then made a comment to the effect, "it's not a seat yourself restaurant." At that point I should have responded "MAYBE GREET YOUR CUSTOMERS AT THE DOOR THEN," or put up a sign that says, "Please wait to be seated." Bottom line, decent food. Cool decor. And rude, unprofessional service. Won't be back. P.S. The gender-neutral restrooms and world peace message in the restrooms isn't bringing customers in the door that are seeking authentic southern barbecue. read more

Stopped in after a hike right across the street. Wife had a delicious blood orange margarita and I had a shiner bock which was refreshing. For dinner we split a yummy chicken and waffles appetizer (big enough for meal and perfect if splitting between two) and a pulled chicken sandwich. Everything was just delicious. Tried the different sauces on the table and enjoyed the ghost pepper sauce which had a nice taste and just a bit of heat, not overbearing. Love the bar here and was really "bummed" when it was closed due to COVID. Recently they've added adjustable plexiglass dividers to allow for distancing while still filling the seats. Prior to the addition of the dividers they could only sit roughly 20% of the bar seats and as you can imagine it wouldn't take long to fill 20% which left other bar patrons waiting for a vacancy. But again, this is my opinion mainly on their BBQ compared to other BBQ places. Grabbed a 3 meat combo. Comes with choice of 2 sides and a corn bread. Pretty good portions. Brisket, burnt ends, and baby backs. Mac and cheese, baked beans, and some coke slaw just to get some vegetables at least. Brisket was OK. A little dry and a boring flavor. But it was good enough. A bit rough, but nothing terrible. Burns ends were weird. I honestly haven't ventured into burnt ends that much but I know these were not good ones. A few of the cuts were nothing but fat. They come already slathered in BBQ sauce. Ribs were decent. Good flavor to them. Just missing that juicy texture on all the meat. I'm glad that they asked if I wanted them with sauce already on them or dry rub and I could put their sauce on later if I wanted. Rub wasn't crazy good but still a little of a surprise. Mac and cheese was terrible. It's like what a stoner or a drunk guy can make at 3am. Boiled pasta, Kraft cheese slices melted over it, and some bread crumbs on top to make it look like it's baked. Beans were your average everyday beans, nothing to complain about. Cole slaw was regular. Corn bread is pretty much vanilla cake, it's just missing the frosting and a candle. Sauces were OK. They don't have them named correctly though. Their St. Louis molasses is a bourbon sauce that's on the sweet side. Their Alamo sauce is kinda tangy for my taste but really thick. Their Carolina sauce is really a South Carolina gold, not a North Carolina vinegar. And their Alabama white is the white soup surrounding the cabbage in cole slaw. Place is cozy enough though. Except the booths, those are the worst seats ever. But I'd go back for food, probably not traditional BBQ but something else. read more

In speaking with several of them they said it's not unusual for crude remarks and physical touches to be made on their butts .
