Whitespace is inside a carriage house behind an old home near where Euclid Ave splits off Edgewood. The gallery has two medium-sized rooms designed to hang art work or host an installation. It's intimate, but still large enough for a fair-sized opening. I like the character inside the space and the Inman Park location adds considerable ambiance. It's a great place to see art. Parking is not abundant with but a few spaces inside the grounds. If attending an opening, you'll need to park on the street, which isn't a big problem in this area.

In this opportunity I'm going to talk about Whitespace, my favorite art gallery in Atlanta! Whitespace was founded by art facilitator and connoisseur Susan Bridges, and it's a gem of Atlanta's cultural life. Not only because it's "a unique art venue which represents emerging and established contemporary artists," as they describe the gallery in their website, but also because their whole space is gorgeous and refined, without being snobbish or pretentious. Every time I plan to go there, I know I'm going to see interesting and carefully curated artwork, while having a wonderful time enjoying both the featured pieces and the place. Whitespace is a delightful cluster of bricks shaped by a front/side garden-patio, a spectacular 1893 house and what I consider a demi-house --where several rooms graciously host the artwork. If you catch a form, a color palette, a medium that thrills you, and the opening date related to all previously mentioned and attend it, join their mailing list by signing up in their reception. Back in July 2007, they had a show featuring womanhood through the figure of Frida Khalo (Viva La Frida), where they showcased painting, photography, sculpture (featuring a very impressive cake-sculpture that was eaten afterward), performance and video. The party they put together for the opening included a beautiful candlelit flower altar that welcomed the public, right next to a chic "margarita" open bar, some delicious ouer d'oeuvres, and a burlesque live show by Atlanta's cabaret dancers the Dames AFlames (hot stuffff! http://www.damesaflame.com/peek2.htm). But once I was no longer in view, the person came to do a circle around the area where I was standing and said, "I'm doing inventory." GIRL, BYE. I'm an auditor by profession and I know what conducting an inventory looks like. Also, people just doing their job do their jobs without explanation required. There were some other things this person did and overall, it was an ugly experience. I haven't been profiled in a long time and it still feels gross and reminds me how awful people can be. I found something special for my friend, and I bought it. I also bought it for myself because after this experience I needed something soothing too. I won't let one person change my mind about a place I shopped at for years but if I see this person when I walk in, I'm turning around and leaving. HomeGrown has great gifts if you want something locally-made that feels special. And in all these years, this is the only time I've experienced anything like this so I'll likely be back. Upon arriving the owner warmly welcomed us and then explained what Healium was about: an atmosphere free to play and rejuvenate, essentially. For the painting sessions, you have a choice to paint on a canvas, bottle, or tile plate. To paint it was $10 for the supplies, discount or free if you donated wine or art supplies. The painting sessions aren't lead by anything, there is a base inspiration for the day that you can draw from, but the idea is really to have fun, try not to be overly serious, and just painting. Let go, sort of experience. There are also guided meditations and food toward the back of Healium. I don't go participate in a lot of meditation sessions, so it was really interesting to finally experience a singing bowl for an extended period of time. The open gallery showcases local work from staff and other artists all with either a fantastical theme or meditative spirit in mind. Healium seems to focus a lot on exploration of the soul and letting that blossom. It's also a safe atmosphere to do so. We ended up painting and painting til the place closed up, and still painting. So much for serious? Or maybe just having too much fun.

They also host meditations lead by Donna, in an exquisite, eclectic black light room. They also have open jam sessions on Wednesday. I felt so at home, it's unreal. The gallery is packed with pieces,from sculptures to paintings. Pieces that capture both emotion, beauty and vision. The atmosphere is rich in taste as well as visual stimulation. Art is in the eye of the beholder and for me I beheld beauty on canvas. They have events, showcasing artists, that are a treat for the art interested. The staff are not just sales people they are guides to walk you through the works... each of them their own rendition of Virgil, there to walk you through your own private tour of the different levels of emersion. THE LOCATION is west midtown, parking was either valet or find a space on the street... we ended up on some side street, but it was fine. THE CROWD was kinda awesome. Very diverse and traditionally artsy folks... with some hipsters and regulars mixed in. It was a little too crowded though, they had a cash bar with beer only. Beer? Beer? Really though... a little Trader Joe's wine would have went a long way. THE ART was cool. One artist created prints using the word "word". Another merged body parts in symmetry creating a landscape via ink/pen. These seem to be those independent do what I want, I think this would be cool art school kinda artist if that makes any sense. You know the kids who dye there hair blue or pink or purple... thats this crowd. Prices for art was in the $3000 range on average for the bigger works. I may have saw a few pieces that were a couple hundred (lets say $300ish range) Overall, good vibes, cool art, interesting people, huge crowd, nice space... I'll probably always give art galleries no less than a 4 even if I wanted to.
