Went here today after hearing a lot of great things. I got the vegan cupcake and I did NOT expect it to taste like a regular cupcake. However, it tasted very hard and stale. Frosting was great, but the cake was hard, cold and definitely stale. Not sure how long it had been sitting, but I've had plenty of vegan cupcakes before that did not taste like that. I can only speak for that item, maybe others are way better! On the bright side: lots of little cute Knick knacks for purchase in the store. If I were to go again don't get anything vegan. I love the desserts offered here. They do have good cake too. I used to buy their large cookie sandwiches and they were very delicious! A great place to grab a dessert. With the subtle scent of chocolates and pastries and nothing overwhelming, this place, the Cake Studio, is the best place to start your morning. It has the atmosphere of a Café the South of France. I'm blown away by how delightful and heartwarming and relaxing this environment is. When I mentioned in one of my earlier reviews that Alaska needed a coffee shop with the "La café" feel, this is what I meant. They make excellent coffee and even better pastries. With soft violin music playing in the background I have woken up fully in the most delightful place that I have ever been. A friend recommended this bakery for my birthday cake and I'm sad to say I was terribly disappointed. I ordered a red velvet cake and it was so dry and the frosting was bland. I'm no foodie but I know when a cake could be better! Maybe someone was just having an off day! With all the good reviews I would give it another try though. read more

I am a sucker for Tiramisus...so whenever I am on vacation I makes sure I try the tiramisu from a bakery. With that being said I have had a few bad tiramisus...But this place wins the award for being the worst tiramisu. It was hard, super sweet, and just simply not edible. It ruined my love for Tiramisu. We also tried the Kahlua Toffee pastry and the red velvet cake which was half decent so I am giving it 2 stars. But it really just deserves one. read more

Forgetta bout it...I stood in line for a strawberry cheesecake cupcake...got it back to the office and bit into and after the second bite couldn't find the filling. No strawberry filling. I called. The gal sez, "there's no filling in those ones." I tell her there was about a month ago and that's why I came back. Also, what had been a really nice cheesecake frosting that was cream colored is now a bright, gross raspberry color for the strawberry cheesecake cupcakes. The gal said "it depends on the who the chef is." Twice now I've gotten sub-par cupcakes. I won't be back unless they switch the chef. I just love this place. They made the most beautiful caramel apples. They are so juicy and the caramel is just so yummy! I love these for Christmas and I can tell you I will frequently be ordering these and other treats from them in the future. I understand it must be difficult to tout oneself as an upscale dessert shop in Anchorage, AK and stay in business. I went in expecting to pay a bit more for a very special dessert. HOWEVER, after paying above average for something, I expect an above average product. These desserts simply were not. I got a few things to give them a broad range in which to impress me. There was a key lime tart/dome-y thing, a lemon cupcake with raspberry filling and a chocolate mousse thing. The key lime was disproportionately sweet, the cupcake was dry and the chocolate mousse was bleh. I was so irritated that I'd just spent so much money on such sub-par food!! I even went back a second time with a friend just to make sure I hadn't had an isolated bad day. Nope: same result. Desserts still just bad and over-priced. My friend very specifically orders a cake to feed 20 people, NO purple and NO buttercream - and for $125 gets a 9" round cake. Too small for me to get a piece, but nobody liked it - and it had buttercream! Worst part was - the guy argues with my friend after she showed him the confirmed email & picture of what she wanted. Well, I wasn't going to jump on a review for Cake Studio, but after TP's review, I felt compelled. First of all, the strawberry champagne cupcake I split with my bestie was only $3.50, not $5. Secondly, the cake was moist and delicious, with a sweet topping of awesome frosting. I discovered the cupcakes by accident when a coworker's wife brought in a mixture of peach, strawberry champagne and red velvet. They are seriously the best Anchorage has to offer! You can't really take the cake.. its just, meh. Cute place to go to with a friend to chat, but either prices should drop a few dollars or.. taste should change. I heard great things about this place, and as we walk in, we see a FLY swimming around in the display cake section and island-hopping from baked good to baked good. I've gone several times now and am narrowoing things down to my favorites. So far I've had: The red velvet cake and cupcake- both excellent, the cake is perfect for me because I'm not a fan of lots of icing and the cake to icing ratio on the cake is perfect. The icing is an excellent balance between butter cream and cream cheese. The cupcake version was good, too, though I think the cake was slightly more moist, but both were very moist- big thumbs up there. The key lime cupcake- I'm a huge key lime fan and was slightly disappointed that there wasn't more key lime goop in the middle. The cupcake and icing were good and maybe that day they just didn't put enough stuff in them. The Boston Cream pie cupcake- I *love* Boston Cream pie, so I was excited to try this and it didn't disappoint. Lots of pudding filling, but not so much that it messed up the cake to filling ratio. More icing than I like, but it's easy to just scrape some off until I have the amount I want- I know a lot of folks dig icing more than I do. Good moist cake yet again- something I find way too many places making cupcakes mess up. They cook them too long and dry them out. Key lime and creamsicle tarts. *Extremely* rich- don't expect to eat more than half at a time, or get just one to share between two people unless you really like rich, rich food. They were both very good and I bought them and had them in the fridge for two days and they held up nicely. The creamsicle was true to it's name and the key lime tart had lots of key lime filling under a key lime shell. Good, but I've had other things there I like better than both of these. Strawberry champange cake- very yummy, lighter than some of the other desserts for when you'd like a nice flavor but aren't look for something so rich. I'll definitely get it again, but probably this Summer when I was something more refreshing. Peanut butter cookie/peanut butter butter cream sandwich- two peanut butter cookies with peanut butter butter cream icing between them. I like, but don't love peanut butter and as I said, am not a huge fan of icing, but these looked good and the lady working the counter said that she keeps meaning to bring one home to her husband, but they have yet to make it there. That sold me on buying two. Wow, very glad I did. Had planned to share one with a friend, but ended up giving her the Boston Cream pie cupcake I was saving for later instead. These were just too good. The peanut butter cookies were sooooo soft and moist which is not common with peanut butter cookies. The icing was ridiculously delicious and may have had a little chocolate in it? This is by far my favorite dessert here- just soooo good! After this, I'd love to see them do some other kinds of cookie sandwich. Can't recall the price of the cookie sandwiches, but the cupcakes with filling are $3, without filling are $2.75, the cake slice was $6, and I think the tarts were $4. That all seems reasonable to me except the cake slice. I think $5 would be a better price. It's a nice slice of cake, but not enormous and they don't put a ton of icing on which is what would be the most expensive part of the cake. The service is very friendly and fast since there aren't too many other people in there when I go around lunch. That may change soon with the tourists in town and if more people find out about it, but I'll be willing to wait in order to see this place get the credit it deserves. I should mention that my mother is a professional cake baker/decorator, so I know all the tricks and am a cake snob because of this. They still met and exceeded my expectations unlike the other bakeries and dessert shops in town. read more

Visited the Cake Studio again. Last time I was here everything was sooooooooooooo delicious. Went back and could not wait to see what they have to offer my sweet tooth; I left elated. Clayton elaborated on the chocolate cake, which I had. Oh my heavens....it was absolutely delightful. My son had the lemon cake and also was over the moon on the taste. Looking for a birthday cake for my mother in law and decided to check this place out. They had beautiful cakes already made in really fun flavors: champagne, chocolate merlot, pineapple. I got the chocolate merlot and they were able to write a quick happy birthday on it! Everything looked amazingly delicious and smelled great. I happened upon this little bakery on my way to the art gallery nextdoor one afternoon and was pleasantly surprised by the laidback coffeehouse vibe and nice employees. I had the mushroom quiche and a snickerdoodle cookie. While I probably wouldn't return for that particular quiche, I would definitely have more cookies! To be fair, when I asked the girl working there which quiche I should go for she told me the mushroom one had a different texture. When I finally ate it I realized what she meant - it has a spongy texture - not what I was expecting but not terrible, either. read more

Five star DESSERTS. I've tried nearly every dessert & bonbon/truffle they offer (for dinner parties I buy a variety and cut them into tasters). What Alaska Cake Studio does best is the fancy stuff! Cupcakes and cookies are good, but for heaven's sake go for what they specialize in. The Walnut Bourbon Tart and the infused cakes (earl gray & lavender are my faves) are sublime. Order your wedding cake here--- truly delicious, classic wedding cakes. The champagne is light and unique. Three star drinks and sandwiches. They need better-trained staff. Buyer Beware! I had been in contact with staff at Alaska Cake Studio to order a wedding cake for a guest list of 21 people. We agreed that a cake with an 8-inch base with no infusions or fillings and a 4-inch tier, which according to the staff, serves 25 was ideal. We proceeded with the working out the details. A few days later, I was told they are no longer making 4-inch cakes and that our only option is to go with a 9-inch base with a 6-inch tier, and that the price had increased accordingly even though we did not need or want a larger cake. A respectable and reputable company would not charge the customer for the changes they did not request or need. No such offer was made. This transaction speaks of a bait and switch tactics. This company sells cupcakes! Just how difficult would it be to make a 4-inch cake, or at the very least, charge me the price for the cake I originally requested. While the cake turned out beautiful, this will be my last transaction with Alaska Cake Studio based on their less than ideal customer service practices. read more

Super cute bakery with a ton of delicious looking goodies. Decided to get the tiramisu cake, banana chocolate cake, and a few bonbons. The tiramisu was a tad disappointing as it didn't taste like tiramisu to me..it had an odd alcohol taste? Or maybe I just still have everything I consumed New Years Eve in my system...(oops, too much info?) The chocolate banana cake was a gift, so I didn't get to try it, but even then I'm not really a fan of chocolate and banana. As for the bonbons, the first one was the coconut which I did NOT like. Next was the merlot one which was pretty good, as was the margarita one. Both tasted very rich in flavor and the chocolate-ness. The only thing I would've changed about them was the salt on top, I could do without those, but that's not enough to make me not want them again. I am shocked about this bakery only showing a 3 star rating. Even more shocked at the 2 star and 1 star ratings? I'm sure everyone can have a different experience in exactly the same place, but wow. My sister took my boyfriend and I here when we were visiting for a family wedding last July and we loved it! We tried the bacon cheesecake and we are both fans. Not only that, but their displays and packaging are really fun to look at as well. It seems like a well put together company with creative baked goods and a fun, playful environment. It is also located in a nice spot really close to the Coastal Trail. So load up on their treats either before or after a walk along Cook Inlet. read more

I stopped in after seeing a story on the news about a new bakery. The girl who helped me was very friendly and the place was very clean and well stocked with merchandise and sweets. I ordered a raspberry lemon cupcake. I was pleasantly surprised when I got to the center. Lovely raspberry filling with lemon frosting not too sweet, but sweet enough. Cake, lemon and raspberry filling. How could you go wrong? The price was a little high for a cupcake ($3) but with middleway cafe charging almost $4 for 1, and grocery store pricing being what it is, I figured that at least I was supporting a local business. read more

The quality is variable. If you get a freshly baked item, it's probably going to be excellent. The problem is they often have older goods displayed next to fresh items, at the same prices. $3 for a day-old cupcake or $45 for a stale cake are outrageous prices. Really yummy treats, I like their truffle selection. The truffles are of the same caliber as modern dwellers. I come here for my afternoon cup of coffee if I'm working in downtown Anchorage. It is such a cute little place and ALL the staff including the owner are very kind to their customer base. They have cup cakes, cookies, brownies and specialty items - all which are very good. Delightful downtown bakery coffee gift shop is a fun stop for a snack. It's snowing very lightly today, 29 degrees Fahrenheit so of course I ordered a scoop of Alaska blueberry ice cream which was creamy delicious! My friend devoured a chocolate croissant. Yummy snacks, and pleasant staffer. Upon our request, he detailed the changing menu, meant I'm sure to keep folks coming back for different goodies. I'm looking forward to trying the luscious looking cakes, like lemon, carrot and some chocolate mocha kind of monster delight. Beautiful presentation! I wanted to eat/try everything in the display case. I ordered the key lime pie, which was so unique looking as it was not in cake slice form, but rather a little pyramid. The key lime pyramid was not as tart as a traditional key lime pie, nor had the sharp green color, but was tasty, however didn't completely satisfy my key lime craving. There were also cookie sandwiches, bread pudding, basically anything you could want to try. Lots of cute knick knacks too, and very friendly staff. read more
