This place has turned into one of our must-stop-in places when we visit Anchorage. We got red velvet and espresso cupcakes today. I wish there were more cupcake options as I'm not a fan of the crazy amounts of red dye in red velvet, but my kids couldn't have espresso either... All in all a lovely shop with an INSANE selection of specialty desserts if you're looking for more than a $3 cupcake. I've purchased a dessert here twice and neither one impressed me. This time I had a peanut butter sandwich cookie. It wasn't very peanut buttery but was way too straight sugary. I have had better, including the same type of cookie that was much better at another bakery nearby. Previously I had a chocolate peanut butter mini cake. It looked better than it tasted. When I'm making my rounds walking through downtown while visiting I may continue to stop in, if only to look, as well as to peek at the kitchen gadgets, but I feel is be better off not giving them a third chance. read more

Beautiful presentation! I wanted to eat/try everything in the display case. I ordered the key lime pie, which was so unique looking as it was not in cake slice form, but rather a little pyramid. The key lime pyramid was not as tart as a traditional key lime pie, nor had the sharp green color, but was tasty, however didn't completely satisfy my key lime craving. There were also cookie sandwiches, bread pudding, basically anything you could want to try. Lots of cute knick knacks too, and very friendly staff. read more

Terrible, Terrible, Terrible: These people have watched "Cake Boss" on TV too many times. Dry, uninteresting cake for $44! (8" cake). Costco, Safeway and Fred Meyer all make better cake at 1/3 the price. What a sad disappointment for my special event- and they are soooooooi particular too: order 4 days in advance, our "cake artists" are only here when they're here- gag me pu-lease. Two of us dropped over $30 at this establishment--what a disappointment. $5 for a slice of "strawberry champagne cake" that was indistinguishable from a prepackaged item that could be found in a vending machine; $6.50 for a flavorless, mushy-textured "chocolate blackberry" confection that was tossed midway through consumption. Honestly, the only halfway tasty confection was the $7.50 (!) brownie sundae bombe. All I can say is this was a horrible cake...first I paid 125.00 for a 9" cake. I told them I needed the cake for a baby shower and that the mother hates buttercream. So we decided red velvet with cream cheese filling. I sent an email showing the colors that we will be using bright orange and hot pink. When I picked the cake up it was done in purple. The mother hates purple. I will say that they took the purple off and replaced with orange so that was ok... we cut the cake the inside was ok..but the outside icing was buttercream..the one thing she hates the most. Everyone couldn't eat the cake because the icing was to sweet and one bite you would taste the cream cheese icing and then buttercream icing. I buy a lot of cakes and deserts for work. I have been all over Anchorage, Great Harvest, Europa, Rustic Bake, Costco, Fred Meyer, you get the idea. Alaska Cake Studio is the best place I bakery I have found to get cakes for different birthdays and occasions to take with you to work. I also like Great Harvest, and Rustic Bake for their cookies and breads. But for cakes Alaska Cake Studio is by far my favorite. read more

Wow, the wife and I haven't visit this place in over a year, we used to love to stop in here on our road trips from Seward. I say wow because the place sure took a turn for the worse. Please let me explain. We just finish having an excellent Japenese dinner a few blocks away, afterwards we stopped in a few shops, did some gaulking at local goods and decided to duck in out of the cold for a cup of coffee and a nice hand made desert. Needless to say we were both disappointed. I order a cheese cake that was tuff and dry. The same could be said about my wife's cake and the coffee was cold. That part still has me baffled, how do you make a fresh cup coffee using a espresso machine and it be cold. It looked like it might have even been instant coffee, the dark yet watery look. The young fella behind the counter spent most of his time holding up the counter than he did worrying if any of the customers were happy. My wife had to go back outside to read the special on the door because he didn't know what it was. The Bill came to over $14 for two deserts and one cup of coffee, I would pay twice that if it was good. We looked around the place just before leavening and thought out load to ourselves, how do they pay their bills. It wouldn't be from our patronage any more. read more

I'm only giving a 3 star just because I've only tried one product so far and I don't live in this state so it may be difficult to try other items. I purchased a whole carrot cake. The icing was delicious, and there were large walnut chunks on the bottom layer. I don't care a whole lot for nuts in my cake but theirs was pretty good. I wish there were more cake to it than nuts. It's still pretty good. I saw a lot of yummy desserts and cool gourmet spices and sea salts I wouldn't mind having. I'd certainly go back, it had a nice atmosphere. This is a great place to stop by have a cup of quality coffee at a decent price and a fancy little dessert with friends. I went here last weekend with my best friend and we fell love with the aesthetic of the place but not the prices of the sweets. Even though a 16oz latte is only $3.50 for a small dessert it cost $6.50. I got the Pistachio Wonder and my friend got the Key Lime thing both of them tasted amazing and were very pretty to look at, I don't like the idea of paying so much for a small sweet like that. read more

Mediocre baked goods, high prices, rude customer service, and punitive penny-pinching eco unfriendly obnoxious tap water policy... My wife and I went here for breakfast during vacation in Anchorage. What an awful customer service experience! We ordered two baked items and paid $6. The woman working the counter dropped one of our items onto a plate, but it slid off and onto the counter where people put their cash, etc. Yuck, but we're not germophobes, so we just ignored it and carried on. We took our breakfast to one of the 6 or 7 tables to eat. They have seating for ~15 people. We wanted some water with our food, so my wife got up to ask for a cup of tap water. "No." That was the answer. The sink was right besides the cashier, but she wouldn't serve tap water! I've never seen this before in the US. My wife suggested we return our breakfast and leave, but I sensed that the clerk would have no idea how to process a credit card refund. So the baked goods are a bit dry. Incredulous to the initial rejection, my wife went back again to ask for water. She was rejected again. Despite the sink sitting right there, we were told that they would not give us water. After eating a few more bites, my wife returned and asked if she could pay 5 cents for a cup to be served tap water. I've seen a 5 cent charge at a few places in my time, though never at an upscale bakery/cafe type of place. But hey, how could we be rejected from tap water after offering something for it. The clerk said no, and pointed out that they sell bottled water for $2.75. You would think in an eco-conscious place like Alaska they would be more sensitive than to ONLY offer bottled water, which is so eco-unfriendly. When a couple entered the store, we suggested that there were better places to get breakfast where they respected their customers. We were pleased when that couple immediately left! Serves Cake Studio right! Penny wise, pound foolish! Immediately thereafter, the the cashier stormed over to us with a cup of free tap water, slammed it on the table, and said "don't mess with my business!" We finished our food and left. As we did, a man confronted us at the door. We hadn't seen him at all yet, but he demanded to know how we felt having made this woman cry. I asked if he was another customer or an employee, since we hadn't seen him before. He explained that he was the manager. We then engaged in a heated discussion over their policy. He was incredibly smug and arrogant. Well, we certainly didn't intend to make the woman cry. Clearly, she is not the decision maker behind the policy. I do wonder why our interaction made her cry, though. If I were here, I'd be frustrated having to enforce a foolish policy. I wouldn't get upset that some customers spoke up to other customers about it. Oh, in our frustrating conversation with the manager, he explained that charging for tap water is reasonable because the bakery is neither a coffee shop nor a bakery nor a restaurant nor a cafe. I'm not sure what he thinks it IS, but evidently the 6 or 7 dining tables plus food for sale somehow makes it fit none of those descriptors. Oh, and he went into a long diatribe that the place is also different from Starbucks, pretty much because it doesn't say "Starbucks" on the store front. (Seriously, he pointed this out to us.) He was incredibly rude and condescending. Well, I feel a little bit bad for people who have to work at a place with ownership that is clearly very unreasonable. I'm sure it can't be a very pleasant experience. As my wife, said, "There are plenty of places nearby that have a nice selection of coffee, breakfast and dessert ... head down the street to Modern Dwellers Chocolate Lounge for a delicious afternoon treat or try Side Street Espresso for breakfast. I visited several times on my recent trip to Anchorage, and enjoyed their espressos (primarily) but also admired their cakes and house-made chocolate bon-bon goodies. The only one I personally tried was a maple-bacon treat, which was delicious. I didn't experience any of their cakes, but that was more an issue of timing rather than interest. I see some people complaining in reviews about the prices- I wouldn't classify this as 'cheap', but the prices were reasonable for what was offered, and the taste and quality were excellent (based upon my sampling and my wife's mini-cheesecake which she enjoyed). We're used to paying up for quality in my hometown of SF, and based on those prices, I was not the least bit offended. This was a great change-up from Starbucks, etc, and I will visit again on my future trips to Anchorage. read more

Wow, I came in to ask if they make cakes since I didn't know anything about them. The main person working there was walking with a work of art green cake in his hand and thought he would be funny and say "No, we don't make cakes here." I wasn't sure if he meant that they receive them from elsewhere. He undermined my intelligence by constantly thinking he was being funny by repeating "No, we don't make cakes." Finally, he started laughing at me as if I was silly and incompetent. He didn't smile or enact good customer service skills. His attitude was as if the world owed him a living. Now this lack of regard for people's emotions does not reflect his excellent cake making ability. I was going to buy a cake for my daughter's birthday. Isn't it funny how bad customer service could make me want to choose otherwise? Ironically, the girl working there was much nicer and made up for who I believe is the owner or main cake maker's lack of awareness. read more

I stopped in today and picked up a Bananas Foster cake and a Raspberry hazelnut passion. I was so excited to try them, they were so beautifully decorated and everything in the shop looked amazing. I didn't even care that I just spent $13 on two desserts, they had my inner fat kid drooling. Upon closer look, the Bananas Foster was 'decorated' with honey puffed wheat cereal (Smacks) and the inside was essentially an absurdly bright yellow banana pudding and taste more like a banana taffy taffy than a bananas foster. The Raspberry hazelnut passion was gorgeous, and the first bite made me cringe. It was so bitter, I had to wash the taste out with a glass of water. I thought maybe it might be the chocolate that it was coated in, so I tasted the filling, and was confused with the flavor. Granted it wasn't bitter, but I didn't taste raspberry or hazelnut as much as I hoped. I was sadly disappointed with my experience. I hope I came in on a bad day and their desserts are a treat for everyone else. I can't say I'd be going back anytime soon. read more

Been here a few times now with my husband and my mom. The cupcakes are decent- a little dry, but generally good solid flavor. Cake is good- the Mimosa cake we had on an occasion was excellent. But the Almond Joy dessert- oh my! Divine for someone who loves almond and coconut flavor. That dessert got them four stars. I'll keep coming back to try. As any place, everything depends on your taste, and since they are always rotating, it keeps it interesting. Sometimes a big win, sometimes just kinda 'eh'.
