Ordered a wedding cake for a casual elopement. Cake execution: pretty awful. To be honest, the cake wasn't all that pretty to begin with but it got worse as the day went on and it thawed out more. Picked up my cake around 4pm and by 7pm it was a tilted Mad Hatter cake. I assure you, it was not damaged during transport. When we cut into the cake to serve slices, an entire chunk of cake was missing from the bottom tier and "spackled in" with frosting. This caused the cake to collapse and the top tier slid off to one side. There was also no dowel support between to the top and bottom tiers. Just a cardboard round which slid on top of the buttercream. That probably would have been ok if it weren't for the missing chunk of cake. People asked me if I made the cake myself. Hahaha. It was pretty embarrassing. But luckily this was for a very casual elopement, not a big wedding, otherwise I would have been pretty pissed. My parents did pay a decent amount of money for this, roughly $275. I've seen far better from Walmart's bakery. The shop got stars for the following... Cake flavor: very good! I ordered the champagne cake with strawberry filling for the bottom tier and chocolate cake with chocolate fudge filling for the top tier. All covered in white chocolate buttercream frosting. The cake and fillings were delicious. The frosting was a little gritty, I assume from using granulated sugar, but still tasty. A little too sweet for my liking but it was still good. The cake layers were nice and thick. Customer service: Great! Response time from the shop was excellent. They promptly responded to my emails on the quote and design request. I called the shop when it was about time to pick up my cake and didn't reach anyone at first, but they called me right back. I guess I could have called the shop to let them know the issues with the cake but I have a feeling once the cake leaves their shop in good condition, they would put the blame on the customer. UPDATE: Well, folks we have heard back from the bakery's "Will M" who takes NO responsibility for the unusual and unheard of practice of hiding plastic straws in the cake and covering it with frosting. Has anyone ever bought an 8-inch cake with 3 thin cake layers and found plastic straws imbedded in it? Yeah, me neither. Nice try Willie, deflecting from the truth with an attack about how I spoke on the phone with your rude employee Joe who got hysterical about my plans to note this experience on Yelp. I was never angry nor abusive when calling to inform the management about the cake issues. I had zero demands, just a request that a bakery manager or owner return my call --of course no one did. The facts are simple, I live in North Carolina and ordered this cake by phone. I had this small cake delivered by a florist who picked up the cake and delivered it with flowers to my 86 year-old parents, (for Mother's Day) one of whom is wheelchair bound and doesn't leave the house. This was noted at the time of the order and explained to the nice young lady who took the order as to why a florist would be picking up the cake. So how does one photograph transparent pieces of plastic in a cake slice, Willie? The cake was inedible. Periodt. Now, instead of recognizing the situation as an opportunity to repair the situation, keep a customer loyal and repair the bakery's reputation, perhaps even reevaluate or change your weird practice of hiding straws in cakes or even an offer to make good somehow, Willie M. chose to be defense and aggressive. I believe warning people about hidden plastic straws in desserts is exactly why we all read YELP reviews. Seriously, do not waste your time and money ordering anything from the AK cake studio. Not taking accountability for a self-inflicted screw up is a major red flag. Their immense number of negative reviews should have been my first red flag. Oh well. Go elsewhere , folks and enjoy a cake that doesn't require plastic rods to hold it in place. Those plastic straws shred when you cut into the cake leaving plastic particles through out the slices. What a dumb practice. Original post: Weird experience that resulted in throwing out the entire cake! Apparently this bakery inserts plastic straws called "supports" into their cakes to "stabilize" them. These straws are not visible and customers have no way to know these straws are hidden in the cake. My 86 year old parents received this chocolate cake and upon eating it found numerous plastic particles through out their slice. Of course they threw it out! They only let me know yesterday as I mentioned ordering another for my Dad. They were adamant I not use this bakery again. So of course I called the bakery today to describe the issue about a cake I ordered for Mother's Day. I asked to speak with the owner or manager and was told by "Joe" neither was in today. I explained the issue and Joe began a bit of a rant about why they use plastic hidden supports due to instability of the fillings and butter in the cake. I asked if there was anyway a recipient would know of these straws and was told there is a label on the box that say something about "supports." I don't know that any cake customer who would know that supports means plastic clear straws through out the cake and said so. Also told Joe that had I known these invisible cake straws were hidden inside the cake, I would not have ordered from them. I asked him to have the management call me with a plan to rectify this bad experience because my parents threw the cake out after finding plastic particles in their servings. Joe's attitude got hostile when I said if nothing happens I will go on Yelp to warn future customers about these plastic supports. He took that as a threat and said so claiming I was trying to "harm the business." I told him how is it harming the business to warn customers this bakery uses hidden plastic straws in their cakes? Again, these straws are not visible (they are clear plastic, do not protrude above the cake's surface and are fragile enough to be broken when cutting into the cake.) I suggested they not use these straws as any customer would be badly surprised by that practice. Of course he tells me no one has ever complained (to him) about it before. He refused to tell me the first name of any manager or owner! Who does that? He told me he would pass on my message but somehow I really dont think he will. I will update this review should this bakery fix this experience. I cannot believe how unpleasant "Joe" was and how irrational he became. Ugh. Over the years I've patronized cAKe many times, both at the current Mall location and at their previous location on 4th next to the gallery. I've bought gifts, coffees, teas, cupcakes, cookies, cannolis, various treats and ordered birthday cakes. I think I have a pretty good idea of the norm. I've always had good service and they've always had a nice selection of locally made crafts in the shop. They are my favorite bakery, despite being very inconsistent in their quality. Why are they my favorite? Because there simply isn't anyone better. Most of their recipes are really tasty, but sometimes (like today) they're super dry because they serve things that have been apparently left out too long and/or baked a touch too long. The last time I custom ordered a cake, there was a hair in it. And for the price I paid, I was shocked at how small it was. This seems to be the norm in Alaska. Owning a bakery must have high overhead. Overall, I do support cAKe, given that I've heard absolute HORROR stories about cake orders gone wrong from other places in town,, especially for weddings and other large events, I'll stick with the devil I know. read more

TERRIBLE customer service. I asked for a mango smoothie, which is on the menu, and I was met with a snarky response. The young lady working the counter said to me " No, you can't." I asked if they had any smoothies available and again was met with the same response. I asked for a sugar cookie, and she used her hand to put it in a paper bag. No tongs or parchment to pick it up. But her bare hand. The whole interaction with this young woman seemed to be the biggest inconvenience for her. If I'm having a dinner party, I can tell them what I'm serving, and they tell me the perfect dessert. The customer service and social manner presented by the employees, and the "owner" were lacking basic respect, empathy, helpfulness, and professionalism. On Monday 02/12/24 I had placed an order for a cake for my Son's 10th birthday party. This order was placed 2 weeks in advance. Another family member had paid for the cake at the time of the order, over the phone with their credit card. They did not realize the amount they were being charged, and we had tried to cancel the order less than 24 hours later. Upon calling to inquire about this, I was informed by one of the female employees, that "refunds/returns are not given for baked items or granted under any circumstances". Despite not having an actual item to return, this should've just been a quick computer task to cancel and refund the future order. She had told me she was going to reach out to the "owner" to let him know my concern about the situation, and get back to me, without giving a specific time frame. The demeanor, hostility, unprofessionalism and nastiness put forth by this female employee led me to believe that I was SOL and this was a dead end, with no hope of a refund. Gauging the situation I decided to leave a review about what had just happened on the phone with the employee. Later that evening I was contacted by the "owner" of the business, who immediately was aggressive, condescending, combative, accusatory, and rewriting the whole situation of what had happened. He was telling me I did and said things that literally never occurred, despite not having proof. He assured me I was not getting a refund due to the review I left them (retaliation/vindictiveness) and that the reason they don't give refunds is because of "keyboard warrior people like me". He told me that I was informed in person that I couldn't cancel the order (I was not, he wasn't even there) and that me signing for the order is a "binding contract that prevents refunds". What a crock. He proceded to gaslight me and ask me what I wanted to do WITH the cake as in picking it up, I told him I did not want the item at this point and he needed to provide the refund. I ended up paying around $110 for a 8" cake, with 2 layers, and a small "photo" printed on it. These prices are disgustingly inflated compared to market price for other bakeries. Don't make my mistake. never give a place business that has a policy of no refunds, even if it's been less than 24 hours. If anyone wants to hear the conversation, please feel free to contact me. A pick-me-up!! Somehow my friend convinced me to go in this shop "just to look". Now how you gonna go in a place this delectable and just look? You're not.... So Obviously within 1 minute it was all, "so what we gettin' girl?!" The choice was toffee cupcakes. Baking executed immaculately!! If they had the icing in a tub I would eat it with a spoon... no Shame! The cake part was soft and sweet, but not overbearing with sweetness. They have a small selection of local art! I stopped in on my way to an event earlier tonight. The gentleman behind the counter (at around 5:45 pm) was absolutely wonderful!!! While he assisted the guy in front of me, I took brief inventory of their selections on desserts and drinks in the beverage refrigerator. For a small bakery, their offerings are plenty. They have a variety of pastries, brownies, cannolis, cakes, cup cakes, and other chocolate covered items I'm unfamiliar with. I settled on cherry/vanilla cup cakes. In their refrigerator, I noticed they sell a few types of unsweetened tea, but there were two bottles of the same brand, although they looked different. I asked the employee if he knew the difference between them. He did everything he could to assist; but like me, he was stumped. My intent was to buy one bottle but I bought both. They taste different... but I can't figure it why. I cant speak for their cakes but when we walked in looking for a dessert to go, my eyes immediately went to the silk desserts. They look like jumbo truffles, glossy and cutely decorated. I've visited this shop several times and each time the pastries were dry. Cake slices were also overprice, especially when the quality didn't match it. NONE of the food related items had prices on them. Coffee and drinks sure but not the food. When asking for the price it seemed everything was one price regardless of the type. When asked why nothing was priced the employee didnt have a reason. We also couldn't tell how long the food had been out. When ordering your drinks they control how it's made. Condiments were strictly controlled. It's understandable that the location has a lot of external theft however the shop does not give a welcoming vibe. At one point the owner or manager yelled out a response to a simple question from his prep room as if we didn't understand the young ladies own answer. Came to Alaska for my 30th bday to see the 50th anniversary Iditarod All handmade treats right here in anchorage and some of the sweets apparently take 5-7 days to make! He refused to have an adult conversation and decided to text me current pictures of some tiny sign that they had to have spent loads of money on, which said in print size .0001 no refunds. Representing yourself as the owner is bizarre, then crawfish back and say co-owner. Bill Waltz, with some training in cultural science or showing compassion to your customer base, I promise you will go much farther than so many people giving you 1-2 star ratings. IN A GREAT AND SATISFYING WAY, made a huge mistake walking into this store because now I'll have to come here EVERYTIME I'm in the mall. Baked confectionaries with beautiful artisanal styling only surpassed in their aesthetic designs by their rich but delicate flavors. There are those average cake/pie shops that have mediocre textures highlighted with gritty granular sugar crystals in everything they make, but the peanut butter blast and the key lime (pictured) were spot on smooth and creamy with unmistakable flavor without a hint of artificial flavoring. Been meaning to stop in since they moved into 5th ave mall and glad I finally did. Very cute decor, lots of aprons, pictures and art for sale, tons of dessert selections and coffee drinks. The latte was just ok but the bread pudding and customer service was great. If I hadn't been so full from lunch earlier I would've tried more than one dessert. They also sell candles (for birthday cakes) which were super cute so I bought some. Well I happened onto this cafe one afternoon while shopping at the 5th Avenue Mall. I was on the second floor and walked to JCPenney and happened to look down over the rail. That is when I saw wonderful LED lighting and a variety of local artworks and stools. I also saw wonderful cafe tables and desserts in cases. I took the stairs to my left and walked to the little restaurant assuming it was new! It had been open for 2 years. I was surprised because all the fixtures looked shiny new and all the colors still popped. There is a wonderful wrap around counter to people watch, though it is a quiet side of the mall. There is a nearby entrance to the mall so one Could pop in to get a specialty cake or candy, perhaps an espresso. The service was was wonderful and the variety of cakes etc will meet any work of dinner party. I learned they will write and personalize the cakes free. I enjoyed a n iced Americano with cream and the coffee was flavorful without being bitter; using Uncle Leroy's coffee. I appreciated the find! Truly an Anchorage treasure with substance. A local business that supports local, I love it. From the local coffee to the local art sold in house, Cake Studio is a perfect little treat tucked away inside the 5th Avenue Mall. This location is so pretty and festive all the time. The quality of their products never ceases to amaze me. Everything is so fresh, and they constantly have new and seasonal flavors of delights to try. This time we went for the Stilton Cheesecake, which was on a small round bed of carrot cake. Even if you're not a Stilton lover, this was a beautiful blend of flavors. Not so sweet and just the perfect amount of tang. They create beautiful personal size confections and their cakes to serve are just as beautiful and tasty. Their staff is also superbly professional and knowledgeable. It was fantastic. My friend got the fruit tart, and she said she had no complaints and that it was he best fruit tart she's ever had. My sister got the Cookies and Cream cake piece (?) and she said it was perfect, and moist and that she would not hesitate to buy from them again. The employees are super kind, because even though it wasn't necessary, the fruit tart had one piece of fruit fall off, which I guess "ruined it," so she got it free. We stopped by the new 5th Ave Mall location on my birthday. We picked three items; a slice of whiskey cake, a slice of champagne cake, and a Guinness Cupcake. The frosting on each was buttercream, and was well made. The champagne cake was a bit dry, but the other two were moist and perfect. The flavors, while interesting, were mild. I would have preferred a stronger flavor from each of the cakes and frostings. What I mostly tasted was well made buttercream and cake, with a hint of whiskey, champagne, or Guinness. Turn up those flavors and I'd become a repeat customer. One more criticism, the cupcake was tiny compared to the mound of frosting on it. The frosting was literally larger than the cake. I don't know if this is a trend or what, but no thanks! I'd rather have the frosting remain an accent to the cake, rather than the other way around. Overall, I like cAKe Studio and will probably be back (though as a local I hardly go downtown, much less to the 5th Ave Mall) - but I hope those interesting flavors get a boost! read more

I was looking for a place I could order a unique cake for my boyfriends birthday and I wanted to give this place a try since their website was clean, easy to use, and had the option of customizing your own cake online. The process was so smooth, design your cake, choose when to pick it up, easy. Now for the actual cake the flavor was amazing. My boyfriend loves coconut so we tried their coconut flavored cake with buttercream frosting and it was perfect. However I wish they would make the cakes prettier, as it looked way too basic for a $60 dollar cake. However I can't complain because the taste was great! Their shop is located in 5th Ave Mall, and now I'm curious to try and have a sit down next time I'm out shopping to try more of their desserts. Thinking that perhaps the last trip was an isolated incident and it might be different this time around - the key lime trifle was also overpoweringly sweet. Not nearly enough lime. In fact, I'm almost 98% certain that had someone not told me what it was, I would've thought it was that strawberry champagne cake with the jelly removed. Last week we asked Bill to surprise us with a cake - whatever flavor we ended up with we'd just go with it. Best decision we could have made. . . we ended up with a lemon raspberry masterpiece. The sponge was delightful, the housemate raspberry filling - I wish I could fill my fridge with it. Only thing I can complain about is the cake was too good - it was gone in less than a day. I'm Back! It's been a year since I ventured into Cake Studio. I raved about the pistachio cake I devoured last year. It was devine,delicious,scrumptious and bad for the waistline. On my ten hour flight to Anchorage I caught myself thinking about eating more of this cake. It' a cute little cake and coffee boutique in Downtown Anchorage. There are an assortment of truffles and chocolates, as well as baking item (and DULCHE DE LECHE!) Really good quality stuff. There's also a bunch of little mini cakes (think tea party size) and baked goodies. We ordered a chocolate chocolate cake and some coffees. The first night I was in I shared a Almond Joy (gluten free) with a friend who had taken me to the studio. It's an adorable shop - with local artists paintings hanging up. I came back the next day (with 3 other friends) and not only did we all enjoy our individual items but we got our SO a to go item. I also bought my very gluten free friend (who also lives in Valdez) 2 different gluten free items. The almond joy will forever be my most favorite item. I will be back here each and every time I go to Anchorage. read more
