I've had two successful hip surgery from Dr Albert Tsai. He is one of the best surgeons around. He is definitely a 5 star doctor for me. Ive waited in the waiting room for about an hour before seeing him. He is worth the wait. Doctor Tsai is well-known in the surgery center at the hospital. Most of the surgical staff know because he is very very meticulous and precise. Staff member see him for their surgery. Most patients must follow the doctor's instruction after surgery. If they don't, they run into problem and play the blame game. Hip surgery has a success rate of 95%. For those reading these review, please know that there is another side of the story. There is some untruth. Inaccuracies, etc. He is a very good doctor. He performed a huge numbers of surgeries every month. I had to wait 2 months for my surgery date. People know that he is good. Also, one patient review believed her numbness is caused by the surgery. It is not the surgery. It's probably neuropathy. My friend has that condition. I'm sorry to say there is no cure. read more

Dr. Tsai performed a robotic left hip replace for me in May. I recovered fine, but was still suffering because my right hip hurt so much. So he replaced my right hip in August. If I could give negative stars about Dr. Tsai, I would. I arrived 15 minutes before my scheduled appointment time for a surgical consult on my torn meniscus, as I was told to by his office, and quickly finished paperwork. I waited over an hour past my scheduled appointment time, and I asked the front staff when it was 30 minutes past my appointment time when I would be seen. Finally, when I did get taken back to a room at an hour after my scheduled appointment time, Dr. Tsai spent under 5 minutes with me, though it was closer to 3 minutes. He briefly glanced at my scans and told me that I didn't need surgery. He refused to explain why surgery wasn't necessary and blantantly dimissed my severe pain that I was experiencing in my knee even when I was simply sitting down. When I asked how I should be managing my pain, he simply stated that I needed to take double the amount of tylenol and advil I was currently taking (which would be a triple dose) every 8 hours. I expressed concerns that too much advil and tylenol would damage my liver and stomach - his response? "You'll be fine, you're young". He then left the room before I was even able to respond and told me to check out with the front desk. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS. read more

I saw Dr. Tsai yesterday after hurting my wrist snowboarding. I called all the orthopedic surgeons in my health insurance network and the Memorial Orthopedic Surgical Group was the only one who could give me a same day appointment. The office is really busy. There is a fairly wide check-in desk and depending on which doctor you are seeing, you veer to the left or right. The waiting room was fairly large and there were many patients coming in and out. It seemed like about half the patients were regulars or returning patients. The 'cattle call' atmosphere made me a little nervous at first. When they finally called my name, the girl was very friendly and warm. She let me to an x-ray waiting room and assured me someone would be with me shortly. I waited another 15 minutes or so and then an x-ray technician came to get me. He was really friendly as well. He asked me how I hurt myself and when I told him snowboarding, he told he has seen some really awful injuries from that sport. He led me down a hall past a giant physical therapy room with many beds to the x-ray room. He took a few x-rays of my wrist and then I got to watch him edit the images before he led me to a room to wait for Dr. Tsai. I didn't have to wait long for Dr. Tsai. He was very easy to talk to and made me feel instantly at ease. He looked at my x-rays and explained what the different bones were and assured me I was not broken. He looked at my wrist and even examined the snowboarding wrist guard I had been wearing all day to minimize the pain. He diagnosed me with a sprain and listened intently as I told him the history of my wrist injuries from kickboxing incorrectly. He even said I could continue to wear my snowboarding wrist guard if I didn't want to get a splint but I went with the splint because it was longer and went further up my arm. This is my first time documenting on Yelp. Five years ago my left hip was replaced. As a full-time second grade teacher I worked on crutches from October 2017 until my surgery date on February 1st, 2018. Dr. Tsai insisted my surgery be done with a robotic assist, and that was the first available date. As a healthy active 63 year old who was used to hiking, yoga, ballet and tap classes as well as teaching full-time my life took a sad turn after the surgery. I awoke with a leg that was numb from the knee to foot, with pain radiating from my hip and down my entire leg. I was told that perhaps the femoral nerve had been stretched and I was lucky it hadn't been injured further. I was unable to return to work due to pain, and a foot that I couldn't lift and flex. I worked 2-3 days a week at physical therapy with little to no relief. When I went to see him for a two week follow-up he said, "Well, it just wasn't your lucky day!" Dr. Tsai's manner is cold and impersonal. He is unwilling to take any responsibility for the continuing problems plaguing me since the surgery. When I returned to Dr. Tsai with hip pain two years ago, he didn't do an exam and just sat on the other side of the room discounting my complaints, telling me it wasn't my hip. So, I got a second opinion from a different orthopedic doctor. He had a diagnosis of snapping hip syndrome, and a treatment/strengthening plan with steps to heal and relieve the pain. Since being forced into retirement as a result of my surgery, I have been unable to continue or modify activities that I love. A year ago the numbness of my left foot caused me to stumble and fall down in my driveway. The fall resulted in a fractured rib and internal bleeding in my liver. In July 2022 I had major surgery to remove a large blood filled cyst, which was attached to the entire right lobe of my liver. The fall was caused by the faulty hip replacement. The pain has not abated, the numbness is permanent, and the instability of my left knee and hip is worsening. I do PT, and many gentle strengthening activities. His use of the Mako Robotic Arm was a huge fail!!! I wouldn't recommend Dr. Albert Tsai to anyone. read more

About two years ago, I had spine surgery with another surgeon who works out of the same orthopaedic surgical group. Overall, it was a good experience, so I decided to give Dr. Tsai a try. Dr. Tsai performed my total hip replacement with the help of Mako, a robotic arm, and a three-dimensional modeling software system. The Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery System uses imaging of a joint before surgery to create a 3D model. Using this model, a surgeon is able to place the implant according to each patient's unique anatomy before ever beginning surgery. With a precise plan in place, the surgeon will do the actual surgery using the Mako robotic arm. The Mako Robotic-Arm gives feedback during surgery to help keep the surgeon to his pre-surgical plan just as a GPS would give guidance during a road trip. The surgeon is always able to make "detours" during surgery using their expert judgment. During surgery, Mako is merely a tool that the surgeon can use. The surgeon is always in control of the tool, maneuvering it with his own hands and utilizing the feedback from the tool to create a more accurate placement of the joint implant. OK, the parking situation can be a little tricky. Having been in the waiting room a number of times over the past couple of years and having had brief chit-chats with others who were waiting, along with inadvertently overhearing some things, here is my take on the $5 ($4 when I started) parking lot "token" fee. Some folks are frustrated for having paid whatever $$$ for their medical procedures then being dinged for another $5 instead of having parking validated, etc. It seems this feeling is compounded by the fact that it's not uncommon to keep getting "nickel and dime" bills way after the actual procedure and subsequent follow-up treatment and medications. That said, I've been somewhat lucky on occasion to find a parking space next to the pay lot, a short 5 - 10 minute walk to the office, depending on your condition and if you have someone alongside to assist you, etc. You could also take a rideshare service which is usually going to be more than $5. But, it's Long Beach, right across from Long Beach Memorial Hospital. It's a densely, populated area with lots of traffic and stuff going on! What do you expect? Anyway, if you think a direct, no-nonsense approach by an experienced, knowledgable, talented, and well-trained surgical team supported by an efficient, friendly and professional administrative team is for you, I would recommend putting them at the top of your list! read more

I was scheduled for a consult with this physician and verified that he was in network with my insurance. There is a copay for the visit, which I also verified online, as well as with a representative. The office called one day prior to my appointment and stated that although they verified my copay, it was their policy to charge $250 because my deductible wasn't met. When one has a copay, the deductible is waived, which is ALSO stated online and I had someone from Blue Shield call and speak with the manager, Dominique to educate her on this matter as well. The representative stated that the office would be honoring my copay. Fifteen minutes later, an assistant manager, Liang called me while I was on my way to the appointment and stated they would still be charging me the $250. I was confused, since I had just gotten off the phone with insurance who verified not once, but twice that the deductible is waived. I attempted to explain this to Liang, but instead she continued to interrupt me and even snickered when I mentioned one of her staff members said it was policy to charge the $250. I'm not sure why that's humorous, but educating your staff on benefits and what they actually mean is vital in any office setting. I can't speak for Dr. Tsai, because I didn't have the opportunity of meeting him...due to the office attempting to collect 3-4 times what I'm responsible for, but this facility is clearly not the right fit for me. read more

Dr. Tsai recently repaired a multiple radius fracture. Great job. Couldn't have gone better. 11/19/11 - It's been over a year since Dr. Tsai repaired my shattered wrist. I have 2 titanium plates and TOTAL mobility and use of my wrist / hand. I can do push-ups ! (not many but that's not the wrist's fault !) No pain. All good. For such a massive injury I didn't even hope for full use but I've got it, thanks to Dr. Tsai's expertise. So grateful. read more

While speaking with him in the hospital I cried and cried; he just stared at me. While in physIcal therapy (still crying due to pain); 3 nurses asked me wasn't I given strong pain medication, I said no. They said that's awful. I would never use him again. I was very pleased, with the outcome cf my third, knee injection. I have degenerative arthritis , and connective tissue disease. So, to cope when the daily aches, pain and stiffness begin to restrict me I get cortisone shots. The last cortisone injection ,In my right knee worked immediately, the relief was instant! My last shot, was just plain painful, and no pain relief. While, there was discomfort during the shot, at the same time I felt the medication working. I've had cortisone shots in my neck, back, knee, and feet. So , I know when I have a good trigger shot, and when it's painful and wasted . Dr.tsai, listens, and responds to concerns, and is respectful,of patient choices.Dr.tsai, cares about his patients comfort regardless of what appears more convenient. This doctor prompts me to be active in yelp (this gives you an idea how urgent I want to write true review of this doctor) I started with a minor injury at the gym on the knee (8 month ago - yes I am still here with this doctor). He says you need PT cause your bones are not broken - so we ended the first visit in 2 mins. 2 months later, I saw him again because it kept getting worse. He says ""oh you definitely need PT. continue to do it and good luck" . now I can barely walk. He says "let's do a MRI. Dr. Tsai was my "second opinion" for a hamstring avulsion. I am from Pasadena and there are several reputable Orthopedic groups up here. I was referred to Dr. Tsai and am glad I was. He was 100% certain about my condition and what needed to be done. He had me in surgery within 3 days of my visit. While I have a long recovery ahead, I am truly grateful for his knowledge, bedside manner and skill. After being recommended by a satisfied neighbor I made an appointment with him to treat arthritis in my knee. After trying alternatives to surgery we decided that surgery was the next best option. I had partial knee replacement with robotic assistance in the morning and released in the afternoon. Physical therapy over the past couple of weeks has been helpful in regaining range of motion which will continue for a few more weeks. I immediately felt better in regard to pain in knee area right after surgery and very pleased with the results. I highly recommend Dr. Tsai for his professionalism and skills. read more

This guy is amazing and straight to the point!!! About 3 years ago (when I was 50) I fractured my wrist in 2 places falling off a road bike going about 20mph along with a pinkie re-injury. I went to 3 Dr's for opinions and Dr. Tsai was my 3rd. He recommended surgery and putting a plate in my wrist. Within months after (and a little therapy) it was as if nothing had happened and now 3 years later, the only thing I notice at all is a little stiffness sometimes when it's really cold but everything else including full flexibility is amazing. GREAT JOB! Please keep in mind that right after any surgery it's pretty tough because you're in a lot of pain from the cutting and healing and you HAVE to do the therapy even if it hurts. The first Dr. suggested no surgery at all which probably would have been less painful initially, but my wrist would have been deformed and there was a possibility of the bones not healing correctly (so chronic pain) or nerve damage. I'm SO glad I found him and had the surgery. I was back on my road bike 5 weeks after the surgery and riding every week since!! read more
