I love coming here for the dance lessons with Pantea. She is a wonderful teacher and fosters a fun nonjudgmental environment. It is $10 cover per person. Overall the venue is not super upscale but it is clean and well lit (until it is social dancing time). Usually there are much more men than women but I always leave learning something new. Drinks are priced for the area but a little liquid courage is nice. I think it is a fun social activity and for that 5 stars. read more

First time coming here on a Friday!! Definitely is crowded from 9-11pm (bumped into quite a few people while dancing) but after that the crowd lightens up and there's a lot more room to dance! Everyone is super nice and friendly! I'm still learning so I typically tell people I'm new to salsa as we start to dance and everyone is more than happy to share any tips and tricks! Majority of people here dance on 1 but there's a few who do on 2! They play a few bachata and merengue songs here and there but it's mostly salsa music throughout the night. Charges for tap water. Generally I find that unethical, but what's worse is how I found out: I ordered three alcoholic drinks and asked for a water for my wife, who doesn't drink. When the bartender gave me a bottle I asked if I could have tap water instead. He obliged and said nothing. The next round a different bartender told me they charge the same if you get a bottle or tap. I said the previous bartender didn't do that, but then she asked him and confirmed - he charged me without telling me. What a creep. read more

I came with some friends on a Friday night for the Salsa dance lessons and social. There are many more men who show up than women so a lot of men had to practice dancing partner-less but since we switch partners throughout the lesson, everyone does get a chance! It was my first time Salsa dancing. And as a follow, I found the lessons to be helpful. I can't speak to the leads however. For the social portion, the music was good and as a woman, there were many opportunities to dance. A few strangers taught me some basic moves throughout the night and that was a nice addition since I had come in with very little knowledge. The gentlemen were friendly and respectful. I wish the bar had water that was free rather than bottled water that we had to purchase. On a side note, the man at the door was very friendly and fun. Came here on Saturday night around 11.30pm. It wasn't too crowded, but the music was not to my liking. Really old songs, and it seemed to definitely attract the older crowds. Not worth the $20 entrance fee - we left a hour later to find a new place. Maybe their other salsa and bachata nights are worth it but was not impressed with the lineup on Saturday. read more

Been to a couple salsa lessons. Pantea is a good instructor, but she can go from basic salsa steps to some insane combo. Definitely can be overwhelming if you are a beginner. Male to female ratio, generally there are more males than females so some nights you might end up getting less practice or simply standing around. Can't speak on bachata as I don't go to those lessons. Giving 4 stars because pantea could make combos a little easier for newbies. If you're intermediate though I've generally had a good experience. read more

Got invited here to try out a salsa lesson. For $10/person cover, this is a pretty good deal. You do not need to pay a coat charge to hang your coat unless you want to keep your valuables in it. Otherwise you can just put your clothes down anywhere. Pantea is a great instructor. The problem is I am rhythmically challenged, but thats my problem. At around opening, she teaches group beginner lessons. Starting with the steps and then incorporating it with a partner. As there will generally always be more men than women in the rotation (due to tech guys), men will switch off with women partners during the lesson every so often. If you came with a partner and don't want to switch, you can be off to the side. Being a guy learning for the first time is quite a problem when the beginner lessons allow any experience level to join. Majority of the women were pretty experienced in this lesson and they were greatly annoyed at my incapability to lead in time. This made it a little bit more discouraging. Not much Alberto's can do about that though. On a Friday night, I'd say percentage of experienced women were 80-90%. The percentage of experienced men were 50%. The age range was pretty spread between early 20s and 60s. Male to female ratio was 60-40. It literally looked to me like the experienced males/females were looking to pick people up regardless of age difference lol. While the inexperienced people were there for fun/learning or got brought along by their experienced friends. Anyway, there are intermediate lessons right after, but I don't suggest doing it if you were already uncomfortable during the beginner lessons. The music isnt blaring which is great, so that you can still have conversations on the side. They also have a bar, but few drank. I am not sure I'd come back unless I came with a friend who really wanted to go and we'd stick together. read more

Went there to try salsa on Friday. Took the class which went on for about 1.5 hours. It has its own pros and cons. Pros: you get to learn salsa and have different partners with different dancing styles to try with. Cons: as it gets crowded, it becomes difficult to follow the instructor. Also people who have been here before, all have different styles and approaches and it sometimes gets confusing if you are doing the right thing. It does get super crowded after 9.30! read more

I got a taste of Bachata last Thursday with this one dude & it got me intrigued to go to a Bachata night to really learn it. $10 cover which is definitely worth it cause you get the lesson & dancing the night away~ Parking is pretty easy. There's two parking lots nearby & street- free. I'm going to try to come once a week or once every two wks. Just soo much fun & I JUST FREAKIN LOVE IT. :) Everyone's pretty friendly. It does get pretty crowded & sometimes end up wacking someone while dancing. But that's just how it is. I ended up coming in on a Tuesday night with my partner and two lovely folks for a night of salsa filled fun. After paying the $10 cover fee, I paid another couple dollars for coat check BUT what I didn't realize was that you could literally leave your coat, bags, anything ANYWHERE because no one is going to take your stuff. So save that extra cash and just set your stuff where you can see it. The first 15 minutes or so was dedicated to teaching us how to do the basic steps, and I started to think that salsa wasn't half bad UNTIL we went ahead and started... the partner dancing. Now, it's really important to be in sync and to allow your man to lead because once you try to lead the dance, you'll mess up the flow of it. My partner and I decided that after the first round, we would be switching off to dancing with different partners to gain a little perspective on working with different styles but I really wish I just stuck to learning with him on the side. There was a huge difference in the ratio of men to women in that, there were so many guys and not enough women for them to dance with! Yikes! There was, however, a variety of men I came across ranging from men who were experts, to men who were forced to come with their wives, men that wanted to impress a special someone with their moves, and those that genuinely were uninterested in everything other than learning salsa. The experience was pretty okay for me minus the creepy men who tried doing the most to impress, but for my partner, it was the total opposite. He had to deal with snobby women who kept complaining about his dancing pace even though he warned them ahead of time that it was his first time. Sheesh! They couldn't have given the poor guy a break! Needless to say, once he came back around, I just stuck to dancing with him for the rest of the night. The pace of the lessons was spaced out pretty well but if this is your first time here, I highly recommend sticking to one partner just so you can have a thorough grasp of the basic partner moves. It starts to get really difficult when you switch partners because you're not used to the other person's style so learn the moves FIRST, then utilize the next class to actually take on the challenge of dancing with other people. Another recommendation is to utilize the instructor whenever you can to really make sure that you have the moves down. Don't be afraid to have her guide you through it to the T so that you can master the steps in order before moving on. This really does save you the time and effort in relearning steps and stumbling on complicated moves because you decided to skip over mastering the steps one by one. The cool thing about the class is that right after the first session if you're daring enough, you get to go straight into the intermediate session! So don't be shy, give this a try! read more

(+) Flying solo? There is no shortage of dancers. Seems to be more males than females, and the whole class rotates partners regularly, so would be a great place to come by yourself to work on dance moves. (+) Affordable! Only $10 cover. Call me jaded, but I feel like in Mountain View that's very affordable! Think about how much you pay for a 1-hour exercise class.. I know for yoga you would pay at least $18. This is $10 for the whole night (2 classes, and dancing afterwards). CONS (+) Instruction can be confusing. (+) Classes are crowded, at least the one I went to was. As a result, it can be hard to see the instructor, and dancers are constantly bumping into one another. (+) It might be in Mountain View, but it feels like Man Jose. So many awkward tech men that seem like they are here to pick up girls. I came with my bf so I wasn't switching partners, which seemed to irk a lot of them who were waiting to dance. Had some people lingering even though I told them politely that I was not switching. Eugh. (-/+) As many have mentioned, drinks are expensive. However, they are really good! The Margaritas are $10 but they are made with patron and are strong, so it's kind of worth it? Sucks they don't offer free water though. Overall: Fun place for dancing! Has it's issues. Don't expect to walk away a pro-dancer and receive top-level instruction, but fun place to come with friends. read more

The first time I visited Alberto's was almost 20 years ago. Back then, there weren't many other clubs in this area. As a result, it did not take much for Alberto's to be packed. So many years went by and this club hasn't changed much; same music, same crowd, same everything. Drinking at Alberto's is still expensive and the ratio between men and women is like 1/6. No bueno! The owner needs to realize, that old formula that did work out in the past does not seem to be working any longer as everyone seems to prefer spending their time and money at other venues. I hadn't been at Alberto's in a long time and after so long I expected some improvements. And none of my expectations came through. Predictably, my last visit will likely be the very last one as I do not see myself going back. read more

Friday night salsa social: 90% beginning/casual salsa dancers for most of the night--not necessarily a bad thing except you'll get stepped on, elbowed, and occasionally have a forearm shoved up your armpit. Dancefloor is a mess. Leaders and followers have no awareness of dance lanes. There is no DJ, all you get is the instructor's (and later bartender's?) playlist--also not necessarily a bad thing except their playlist absolutely sucks for dancing salsa. There is no intelligence/forethought put into the mix of the songs, they just press play and let all the songs play their full length (which is too long for any one social dance). Not all salsa songs are appropriate for the dancefloor--some are hard to follow (beat is hard to find), some have too many beat changes, some have non-salsa parts that are awkward to dance to. A consequence of all this is hardly anyone dances on rhythm. Conclusion: Salsa Fridays at Alberto's is a shitshow. read more

I live and dance regularly in LA. Was up in Northern Cal and needed a dance fix. Found this place on Yelp. I drove 1.5 hours to get there on a Thursday evening. I had a blast! Everyone was super friendly. Sometimes when you are a new face it's more difficult to get dances, but not here. I danced practically non-stop! Culturally diverse crowd and a good mix of experienced to non experienced dancers. The more experienced dancers begin showing up around 10pm. $10 cover. CONS -drinks a bit pricey -more people stepped on my feet than I usually experience. Less experienced dancers have not learned to stay in their "lane" and use smaller steps. -No food. I drove 1.5 hours to get here and needed a little bite. But they did say you could bring food in. -DJ Music (they have a good size stage, would have been awesome to have live music). read more

SALSA: I usually come here on Friday nights for their salsa, bachata nights. It's $10 per person you pay at the door. They didn't ask us for ID. You can also check your coat. There is a beginner lesson and after is a more intermediate lesson. After lessons is when the music starts. INSIDE: of course it's kept light during lessons, then the lights are turned down when the real music starts. I like how they have mirrors along the walls so you can look at yourself and make sure your hair isn't all out of place after dancing. Plus it makes the place look bigger. Bar available if you want to get a drink. STAGE: I like how they have a stage and sometimes they have live music, which I am a fan of because I like knowing that live music is still available nowadays. OVERALL: it does get busy, and you have to really watch your space when the beginners are around because they take bigger steps than should. It's a decent spot for a salsa night. Even if I haven't been here in months, I see some of the same regulars here. There are places to sit, which is always a plus so you don't have to stand awkwardly against the wall if you want to rest or people watch. read more

Women triumphant in getting their boyfriends and husbands over to a Salsa class as part of their plans to make them their perfect partner. I lie...there were a few guys who looked happy to be there... the single guys who were probably there with other intentions. ;-) Pantea was good, I am sure she has done this many times and was very enthusiastic and engaging. The down side was that they make you change partners every minute. It is hard enough to learn when you are with 1 partner through out and it makes it harder when you have to adjust to a new partner every minute. Other things I noticed...the fans seemed to be swinging pretty fast above our head and reminded me of a potential scene from Final Destination. Coat check was $2 and they don't have tap water and bottled water is $2.50. All jokes aside, this place is good. They have a good mix of patrons who seemed friendly and this is a good place to Salsa. read more

Pretty cool place!! We came here yesterday sat January 26 to celebrate my friend and I bdays with a party of 20. Patty and her staff is pretty attentive and friendly, the service at the bar is fast, but the cheery on top I'll give it to the life band RUIDO AZUL their music choice and the energy vibe it's on top the hole time are playing Jaime the singer is very cool he even stopped by and greet us for my bday it was a nice act from him. The DJ not so much, he remix different kinds of music like he is playing salsa and right away national Mexican Rock don't like that, I even heard other people complaining about it too. Anyways over all nice experience at this club. Thanks Patty for your patience, at the end when nobody want to leave the club, you keep your cool and very polite way let them know it's over. Came here for Friday Salsa night with a group. $13 dollar cover charge included 2 hours of lessons (1hr Beginner + 1 hr Intermediate) and live band music afterward. The beginner lesson was good. It is a bit strange to have to switch partner every 30 seconds. When we got to the intermediate lesson I was quite lost. The instructor was teaching some pretty advanced moves. To my surprise there seem to be no shortage of male partners at this place. It got quite crowded after a while though. I wish the venue is bigger. There were quite a few advanced dancers which is nice. I enjoy watching even I can't really dance. I will probably go back there again on a less crowded weekday. read more

This review is specifically for the Saturday-Sunday Salsa lesson series by David EZSalsa (though the beginner Salsa classes on Tue & Thu are pretty good too if you go regularly or just want a fun dance night!). EZSalsa is an amazing experience for beginners, especially those without much background in dancing, music, or rhythm. The class progresses at a slower pace than many other beginner classes and is designed on gradually getting you familiar with the material. It's easy to do a few drop-in salsa classes and then end up lost by the end of the night and not really remember what you've learned. EZSalsa avoids that - David eases you into the different moves, rhythms, and patterns giving you time to learn things. The instruction is very clear and you can really get a feel for the moves. To be fair, it still escalates pretty fast and you do learn a ton of material (and your brain will most likely be fried by the end of every class), but it's done in a very manageable way for people who are coming in completely fresh. The class is also a great jumping point to do other beginner and intermediate classes that go at faster paces and not get lost. David provides plenty of material for you to review at home if you'd like - including summary videos. The price of the course was very reasonable for the amount of instruction (group salsa classes generally seem to run 10-20/hr) and as of this writing you also got an additional saving if you attend all the classes. My only feedback on the course: it would be great to hear more advice to the class at large from the female assistants (I think there were certain aspects the ladies in the class wanted more instruction/empathy on), a break in the middle might be helpful to let people refresh their brains/chat, and please add even more classes! (before you know it the course is over). Overall, the environment was fun, David is friendly and energetic, the female instructors/assistants were knowledgeable, and everyone involved with the course was very passionate about Salsa (e.g. great tips from some of the people helping out and taking pictures). I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in learning the basics of how to dance Salsa. read more

This review is for the SALSA options ONLY -- Tuesdays ($6 student/$10 else I think), Thursdays ($10), and Fridays ($15). Friendliness: 5/5 Skill level: 2/5 (lower is not bad, just means there's more beginner/intermediates). Music: heavily Salsa Romantica, with 1/3-1/4 of songs being Bachata and Merengue Gender balance: feels 55-45 men-women... it can get a li'l bit sausage-y at times. :-/ I love, Love, LOVE the dancer community here. With super regulars like David Bistry who actively promote a social experience by dancing with EVERYONE around the club, newcomers don't feel left out and old vets who have outgrown the skill level of the place still come back just for the warmth. Speaking of which... This is generally a beginner-intermediate level spot. Pantea teaches some nice moves for learners and is good at keeping it at a pace where most of the class can absorb it well. Tu/Th lessons are 715-815 (beginner), 815-930 (intermediate), with social dancing that typically goes till midnight (later on Fridays). If David's around, you'll find the signature "electric slide" being danced by the regulars around midnight. FUN! read more

During 10 years of my life I've had several dance teachers. That gave me enough time to observe and compare them to each other and make my conclusion about their teaching style. I did not know what to expect from Pantea when I first came to her class in Alberto's night club and I was extremely surprised to see how professionally she leads the group. She keeps a perfect balance between necessary learning discipline and excitement of the process. She allows enough time for people to follow a demonstrated move, repeating it several times for them to catch up. Her attention to detail is sharp and she is always ready to help. Setting high standards for the students, she dances with such a relaxed soft "pantera" grace that it speaks for itself about her experience and natural talent. In addition to that, she is genuinely kind, sweet and fun. That is why our lessons are filled with jokes and laughter, so everyone - newcomers like me and veterans - feel equally comfortable and welcomed. Try it if you like dancing, and you will see for yourself! Dancing in Pantea's class really turned out to be the best time in my life and for that I am very grateful! Thank you dear beautiful Pantea! The 3* rating is sort of an average between what would have been 5* from 1999-2002 and what is only 2* since. During the dot-com bubble years this was a second home to me and a lot of other dancers. I would buy a $50 monthly pass and come here after work (which was around 9 pm at the time) on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday for salsa (Wednesday was Lindy Hop, and Saturday was 'Rock en Espanol'). Alberto's was very popular at the time, and would have a packed house of good (and otherwise) dancers on those nights. These days things are very different. There is still salsa on a couple of nights a week, but it's more or less a beginner's scene, where about 50-100 people show up for classes, dance a few songs after that, and leave the place effectively dead by 11p. As for why this happened, I think it has less to do with the dot-com bust than with the management at the time (I believe there has since been a change or two), but that's another story for another time... read more

We returned! :O For my birthday. I feel like a dinosaur. Just kiddin'. We got here at around 8 p.m. this time and stayed til around 2. Apparently, the student discount only applies on Tuesdays. The beginner lessons started at 7:30, I think, but we managed to catch the tail end of it, as well as the intermediate lesson, which started at 8:30(?). The instructors are pretty awesome, and make everything look completely effortless and graceful. I think it's harder to learn if you're not in the rotating circle, if only because it's just really hard to see the instructors when there are so many people. But man, they have impressive moves. I'm not sure if there is an actual official closing time, because they seem to continue playing music until everyone's gone, or done dancing and about to leave. The people there are friendly and other than what I hope to be an accidental butt-graze, there was no one sleazy. People seem to be there to really actually dance, instead of to meat-market someone off the floor. (Whatta relief. :O ) I had a whole lotta fun here, and would definitely recommend this place to others. :] They have a bunch of chairs and really comfortable couches to sink into if your feet happen to be killing you (guess who isn't used to wearing heels? :[ it's the only piece of information I took away from my biomechanics class, haha). The bathrooms are also clean, which is always a plus. :O read more
