Alcazar is a must stop restaurant right now in Paris, and it did not disappoint. While still popular with the Parisian crowd, they are welcoming to Americans and clearly comfortable with their international crowd. They start you with (pitted!) olives, bread, and butter, which were all fresh and delicious. We ordered the burgundy snails and the white Tarama as appetizers, and were absolutely obsessed with both. It was my friend's first time trying escargot and she loved them! The steak frites weren't my favorite, as the frites were pretty soggy but overall the experience was great!! read more

This is definitely a place you should visit, the atmosphere is absolutely beautiful, as well as the food. The service was also to die for we arrived without a reservation, which I should say it will be best if you do get a reservation this place seems very popular. Although, we did not have a reservation they were able to seat us they just told us we had to be out by 10 I believe we got there around 7 PM we arrived with two infants and they did provide us with two high chairs. The bread tasted amazing, as we waited for food we order to mock tails, the mock tails ehh I would skip. My husband ordered fish and chips he said it was very tasty but it was a lot of food so he did not finish it. I ordered I believe the baby chicken, it came plated so nicely and I finished everything I loved it. We also ordered a side of fries the fries were literally to die for I love them as well as my 10 month old. Apparently at 10 PM there was a kind of a drag show which we did not stay for lol but if that something you're into maybe check that out. read more

I was very conflicted by my meal here... on one hand, I enjoyed it. On the other hand, I wouldn't go back or necessarily recommend it to anyone else. Overall there was nothing wrong with the meal or experience, but just really nothing special. AMBIENCE: This is where Alcazar really stood out. It is a very lovely, romantic restaurant. There's a surprising amount of greenery around the restaurant, and there's a fun upstairs bar that keeps the mood lively but is separate enough to not disturb. FOOD: As a table, we ordered the oysters to start. Two of us had the duck and the other had the scallops. The duck came with a delicious butternut squash (and sweet potato?) mash. The scallops came with mashed potatoes. Everything tasted good. The duck was a bit fatty, but hey that's duck. The scallops were very tender and delicious, but not very substantial. Like I said, there was nothing wrong with the food, but nothing standout and nothing I would reorder. We also had a bottle of red wine from Aix en Provence, which was very nice. Overall, a pleasant meal in a romantic restaurant, but for the price we paid and the quality of food we received, I would not return. read more

The good: the atmosphere in this place is absolutely incredible. The inside is stunning and the wait staff was very friendly and spoke great English. We got there around 7:30 and were the only people in there, but around 8 it was full and a wonderful time. Now for the bad. The food is very average at best, especially for the price. I had the steak, which was the best thing we ordered. My wife ordered the ravioli with truffle but got the other one on the menu instead. She didn't care for it. One of those 'in the know' spots. You can't tell if it's open from the outside. But once you open the doors and walk through the long hall you see the beautiful, airy, classy eatery. It's really an institution with history oozing from its architectural bones - Rock and Roll Circus connections, drag queen cabaret, and now elegant Latin Quartier restaurant. Gorgeous open ambiance with second floor bar and beaucoups des plantes! Excellent prix-fixe lunch menu -- thrilled to have the most delicious oeufs poché avec truffes. Perfectly cooked Supreme Volaille roast chicken - the kind that grandmere would make for French Sunday suppers. The raw "L'instant cru" dessert I chose was the Limone Tart -- I LOVED it! Soo delish! This place was a few blocks from the hotel I was staying at in Paris in November. I passed it a few times and was a little intimidated by the entrance - a hallway with doors at the end that opened up to a gorgeous, trendy restaurant, flowing with beautiful people. Then I looked it up online and was intrigued by the menu (I don't typically eat meat and there were quite a few options for me) so I decided to check it out with my fiancé. It ended up being one of our favorite restaurants of the trip. We both had the pumpkin and butternut soup (to die for!) and we shared the burrata and beetroot, yum. For dinner I had the ravioli and he had the hanger steak. I drank wine and he started with a tequila cocktail (I don't remember what it was called but it was too spicy even for us, who usually enjoy spicy everything) and then moved on to a tequila soda. While the food was delicious, it was the atmosphere that really did it for us. The music, the lighting, the crowd - Perfection. There's even a cute upstairs bar/club for a drink after or before dinner. I had to run upstairs to take a picture of the neon sign after we ate even though we were too tired and full for another drink. I'll absolutely be coming back during my next trip to Paris, especially since our new favorite hotel (Hotel Prince de Conde) is only a few blocks away. read more

When Sir Terence Conran opened the Alcazar in Paris (1998), I thought : At last, something new, modern and fresh will come from London. The restaurant scene in Paris was incredibly classical and quite boring. Alcazar brought youth and enthusiasm. Suddenly it was possible to eat without whispering. Dining was not only a feast for your stomach but also a real party with music and people talking loud and laughing. It was not a common thing. Now that Paris has more funky places than before, Alcazar remains a successful restaurant and bar. Nevertheless I must say that the cuisine is quite average. I personally come for the special evenings at the Mezzanine, the Alacazar's bar on the first floor. It's a great bar in the 6th district. Barmen are real professional. Their cocktails are delicious (about 10 euro). Look up to the special evenings at the Mezzanine: A lot of different happenings are proposed. There are lyric evenings on Mondays, Burlesque shows and good name DJs on weekends. read more

During our week long stay in Paris we came here for dinner and had a phenomenal meal. My sister who lives in Paris joined us for dinner and recommended this restaurant since she'd been here on multiple visits. The service was attentive without being obsessive. My sister and husband both ordered the entrecote... quite large piece of beef. It came with frites and was perfect. I had the skate and it was excellent. Instead of wine we ordered a beer that was infused with tequila-an interesting combination that we had never had before-quite good. Unfortunately there was no room for dessert. Can't get into über-hip Wagg next door? Or simply don't want to wait in line? No worries. Just head over to the Alcazar, go upstairs to - you guessed it - the Mezzanine, and enjoy the chic decor, pricey drinks, and well-to-do crowd without having to put up with a queue or a doorman. I normally try to avoid any bar that has its own line of compilation CDs. I mean, seriously, when was the last time a non-tourist dupe set foot into a place like Buddha Bar? 1999? But despite all its self-promoting schwag, the Mezzanine d'Alcazar is still undeniably cool, with the added bonus of a reliable DJ roster and friendly bar staff. The only drawback is that - like most Paris night spots - the clientele can NOT dance. And sadly, the columns near the bar are an open invitation for Paris' worst dancers to attempt their worst pole-dancing renditions. But with enough drinks in you, the tragedy can become comedy, and you can be glad you didn't pay for the pleasure of watching an entire club full of these uncoordinated shenanigans next door. read more

Ambiance and setting is 4 star but the food was awful and Very disappointed with the French service. Ordered the roast chicken supreme and was advised the free range chicken was especially tender. But it came out to be tough and very dry. I asked the waiter to cancel the dish only to have it bought back by the director (who poses as the manager) didn't believe me, gave me attitude and pretty much accused me of lying. He also proceeded to cut the chicken in front of me with a steak knife to 'show me' that it was cooked perfectly. Our waiter Gaetan was lovely and friendly. Solid modern food. New American, new Australian, New British, modern French, its all kind of the same. Get past what it is called, this place services nice food that is not terribly expensive. There is a Prix fix menu which is 44 euro if I recall correctly. I ordered a la carte and had the octopus. Probably one of the most interesting and tasty preparations I have had. I think they slow poached it for hours because the meat was so tender it was almost like eating tofu. Quite good. The wild cod had good flavor but it wasn't as memorable. The dessert again was tasty but not as special as I was expecting. I had a poached peach with a peach ice cream. Texturally, the peach reminded me of canned peaches which is fine if the poaching liquid had better flavor. It was sweet, very nice, but not not much beyond sweet. I would have expected more complex flavor. the service was attentive but not terribly warm and he decor was very nice. Modern and a little like a club. The restaurant used to be associated with Top Chef Paris but I think they cut ties to that which I think is a good thing. The chef has potential and getting rid of the gimmick allows the people to experience the food for what it is. And what it is is nice, tasty well plated and pretty, but flavors are not super complex or interesting. Good meal at a fair price, but not a Paris meal to remember. read more

We were looking for a late night place for a drink and food along Rue Mazzarine and stumbled into Alcazar. Kind of a quiet night in Paris as it was a long weekend. The kitchen had just closed, But in through the elegant curtains we went, headed upstairs, not too many people there, and they seemed like a nice mix of regulars. With the music playing, we requested some Earth wind and Fire, and Lucky. The nice lady DJ obliged. A few dance spins later, fueled by some fresh Gin and Tonic, we headed back to the hotel for some well- deserved ZZZZZ's. We still hadn't eaten, but the breakfast bar opened in a few hours anyway- no probleme. Can't wait to go again, when the kitchen is open. read more

This is my second time at the restaurant and it was as good as I remembered. We shared the house foie gras as an appetizer and had the roasted cod, filet of beef and the chicken, all which was excellent. We had the strawberries Melba for dessert which was good. Arriving far too early (by Parisian standards) at this enormous restaurant, we were seated at a nice enough table in the English language section (we could tell because menus were in English and had a little red dot on the cover to distinguish them). Milady had a pleasant view of the kitchen, and I rubbed shoulders with the waiters every time they needed a basket of bread or clean silver. Our waiter was charming, and clearly an American intent on making his bones (an unfamiliar phrase? See The Godfather by Mario Puzo for a contextual explanation) as a real restauranteur by working in Paris. He was terrific, despite the occasional accentual lapse, and really took making our dinner pleasant seriously. We ordered a 2009 Burgundy, Givery 1er Cru, "Clos Jus", Vincent Lumpp which was one of a number of reasonably priced offerings on the wine list. The waiter returned with the 2011, explaining there was no 2009 remaining. When I gave him a look and resumed examining the list, he mumbled something about "one more place to check" and returned with the correct vintage a few minutes later. Unlike the 2011 (which we feared would be too young), this one was ready to drink - a refreshing taste of bing cherries, and a lightness attributable to a relatively low alcohol content (13%), with a hint of spearmint on the palate as it finished. The dinner menu is interesting. (No, not in the sense of the ancient Chinese curse, "May you live in interesting times.") The entrees (French, throughout Paris and perhaps the rest of the civilized world, for starters or appetizers) are pretty standard - Milady chose the "King Prawn Salad with Mango and White Asparagus", and I went for the "Burgundy Snails (6)". There isn't much one can do when presenting traditionally prepared snails - the little silver tray with depressions, the small pointed fork, and the snail holder that looks like an instrument of medieval torture - but the kitchen should have the self respect to make sure the snail shells are unburned and intact. (For the uninitiated, the snails are prepared outside the shells and placed in separately purchased, reuseable shells, for soley for the purposes of making an attractive presentation of the dish. When exposed to an open flame for too long, the shells burn, and when heated in the oven before serving, they fracture at the back, exposing the snail. The sous-chef should really rescue the snail, reshell it, and then place it for serving. It didn't happen that way this evening.) To be fair, they were delicious, tender and very tasty, if lacking the assertiveness one would normally expect in the garlic butter. The king prawns were presented head on, sitting attractively on a bed of white asparagus and dotted with small pieces of mango. The saucing was mild, but accentuated the mango and asparagus flavors. Milady loves fish, and Alcazar featured a dish described as "wild cod." The cod was firm, precisely cooked and delicately flavored. The saucing was decidedly timid, a milk emulsion with no distinguishing characteristics other than its completely successful desire to be inoffensive. The stalks of bitter green vegetable material topping the presentation were probably there just for color. I ordered the filet de boeuf with peppercorn sauce, medium rare. The beef was flavorful and tender - unfortunately the kitchen apparently lacks a hot enough flame to crust the exterior of the filet, and the sauce au poivre (which had a nice balance to it) somehow congealed almost immediately after the plate was set in front of me. Plopped in the middle of the plate like a failed floating island, surrounded by "skinned" sauce, the dish failed to achieve its potential. French fries, served on the side, could have provided a platform, improving the visual qualities of the most expensive item on the menu. A "Top Chef" presentation this was not. Desserts also fell short of expectations, if not also short of their potential. The vacherine of strawberry and liquorise was beautiful to behold - bright strawberry sorbet and a very mild anise sorbet separated by layers of wonderful meringue, topped with chantilly (real whipped cream) left me feeling the flavors had been "dumbed down" so as not to offend the diner with their assertiveness. The "Bourbon Vanilla Millefeuille" had only two major shortcomings. The millefeuille pastry had been left in the oven too long, developing a distinctly burnt flavor (though it looked only very slightly darker than expected, it was actually the only assertive flavor of the evening) and a complete absence of bourbon vanilla flavor in what might have passed for a second-rate cannoli cream, lacking both richness and texture. It wasn't bad, just not what one expected given the "Top Chef" design. Certainly edible, but just as certainly, a disappointment. (The wine, however, was not.) read more

Went here for a conference dinner. Didn't get to pick the food, but what I was served was very good. In particular, the appetizer a 'Scottish Salon Tataki, Pickled Ginger, Soy and Wasabi' was very good. The entree was free-range chicken and was also very good. What do you get when you cross a classic French Brasserie with a modern and hip setting? You get Alcazar! This restaurant and bar was a pleasant surprise. The food was expertly prepared and delicious. It's a bit pricey, but not crazy. It is a friendly place, full of locals having a great time. The setting reminds me of a new and hip New York restaurant, but this is classic French fare. For those of you who love cocktails, the entire upstairs mezzanine is a large bar with club music. The Mezzanine d'Alcazar is certainly chic and stylish and has an intimate feel about it due to its small size. There is even a stencil by Miss.Tic on the entrance doors to Alcazar. However, the service I experienced there was absolutely awful and thus I cannot recommend it. My simple enquiry as to whether I could change tables was treated as a personal affront by the manager (at the time, may still be there?). After moving me in quite a rough manner to another table, she was very rude to my friend and I for the rest of the evening, even shooting me glares from across the room(!) Needless to say, we didn't stay long. In short, if you want good/friendly service in chic surroundings, I would strongly suggest you look elsewhere. read more

Modern and trendy - usually not words you associate with typical parisian dining. We stumbled on this place on a night we had no reservations. They had live theater/singing/opera/general entertainment on monday evenings - however you must sit upstairs in the lounge to enjoy it. We found it very odd that this place was completely empty aroound 9pm, however we were hungry and decided to give it a go. Comfortable tables- alot of space compared to other restaurants in paris. Food was consisted of modern takes on french classics with some african influence. The end result was really good! Had a delicious ceviche and a cauliflower/crab mousse. For plat we enjoyed veal kidney which was cooked perfectly with a delicious sauce. Pricing was fair and service was attentive the entire time. We came here with maybe too high expectations, having eating at several very nice places during the last week. We picked this place because it was listed in the Michelin guide, usually a good reference. The setting is modern, as many have commented, but a little cold and impersonal. Can someone explain why nice tables would have ugly plastic spoons for the salt dispensers? Our waiter was simply bad, by French standard. We ordered 2011 bottle of wine and got a 2012. The Kirs arrived and the appetizers arrived two minutes later. We had the octopus salad and it was very good. The waiter never came back to make us taste the wine and I had to do the wine service. Then the cod, which was also very good, but I had the Shredded Ray, served warm. This was the most depressing and underwhelming dish I ever had. It had the same temperature and exactly the same garnish as the appetizer. The waiter commented that, yes he should have mentioned that the two dishes were very similar. duh?? Desert was ok, but average. Overall, really not a great place considering the price, the completely inattentive waiter and the major faux pas of having two extremely similar dishes in the menu as an entree and the. as a main course.
