He and his team thoroughly explained the necessary treatments, procedures, reasons, costs, and the order in which to work on my teeth, since I had to budget. Since then, I had a cap replaced on a front tooth, and Michelle took great care to ensure the color matched perfectly. This week, I had two crowns replaced efficiently in one day. All three teeth indeed had cavities! I am fortunate to have them located here in Pacific Beach.

I never write reviews, but this experience was so ridiculous that I feel obligated to warn people…read more I went to PB Smiles for a cleaning and somehow left with a 7-visit, $2,000+ out-of-pocket treatment plan (over $8,000 without insurance). This included a crown, inlay, several fillings, and an entire-mouth laser treatment because I supposedly had developed gum disease in the year since I had last seen them. The hygienist and dentist were both incredibly rude and insensitive, and they made me feel ashamed and embarrassed about my teeth rather than actually helping me. I told a friend about the experience afterward, and they said it sounded like I had been treated as if I were an addict about to lose all of my teeth, which is basically how I felt leaving that place. I've struggled with cavities since I was young, but no dental office has ever treated me like this before. The communication between the staff and the general level of care and attention were completely missing. I told the woman who took my X-rays that I had sensitivity when flossing a particular tooth. When the hygienist came in to measure my gums, she said she heard I was experiencing bleeding on one of my teeth. I corrected her and explained that, no, it was just sensitivity when flossing and biting. Then, when the dentist came in, he said, "Okay, so you're experiencing no issues or sensitivities, correct?" I told him again that I had already told both women that I had a tooth that was sensitive when I flossed. He said that was because I had gum disease and needed the laser treatment. I explained that the sensitivity was on the top of the tooth, and he then said that was why I needed the crown. The funniest part is that after spending nearly two hours there, I still didn't even get the cleaning I came in for. Thankfully, I got a second opinion from a dentist who was recommended to me. Turns out I only needed two fillings, and my gums are completely fine. He found no need for the laser treatment, crown, inlay, or the whole $2,000 treatment plan. He also told me that he has seen other patients who came to him with similar experiences after being seen at PB Smiles and other "Smiles" locations. When I called PB Smiles to cancel and told the front desk that I had gotten a second opinion and believed they were trying to scam me, the woman I spoke to immediately became defensive and said that different dentists can recommend different treatments. Different treatment plans I understand, but how does PB Smiles measure every single area of my gums 3+ mm deeper than the other dentist? At that point, the difference feels a lot less like "different treatment philosophies" and a lot more like a very expensive (and terribly executed) sales pitch. Get a second opinion before agreeing to anything here. I'm extremely glad I did.

In the beginning my teeth were so bad, and neglected, that I thought I would never smile again. My former dentist said there was nothing he could do, and that I should find another dentist. I thank God I found Dr. Muir. Over a period of time, with the help of his skilled, and kind assistant, Marcie, he performed a masterpiece of cosmetic dentistry. I, now, smile confidently, with a heart of gratitude, and thanksgiving. Case-in-point, just recently, we were having a very difficult time keeping an old crown cemented on, but Dr. Muir never gave up, (like my previous dentist)-after exhausting all avenues, he had the lab make me a new crown, which fits perfectly, looks great, and stays cemented on, all with no charge-that's the kind of person he is; not only a seasoned, kind, compassionate, and professional, man of integrity, but one who goes the extra mile to make his patients happy. Thank you, Dr. Muir. I respect you, and owe you an enormous debt of gratitude. God bless. -Randy

A clean place where you can get fast and painless service if the money is not an issue…read more Know what your insurance covers. This place doesn't work well with insurance company (e.g. they don't bother to call your insurance) or they don't offer you options that can save you money. They should know that MONEY is ALWAYS one of the concerns for their patients. On my first visit I was told I needed certain procedures including 6 fillings and a deep cleaning. I was told that the filling was originally $875 per tooth, but because of my HMO it was reduced to $187. Sounded good because I wasn't fully aware of my coverage, and I thought they confirmed that with my insurance (later I called the insurance company and they said they were never called by this dentist). The filling procedure they do is D2651 (Inlay Composite) which may or may not be listed in your benefits. The deep cleaning is D4341 - your copay should be around $50 per quadrant, and D4381 - medication related to deep cleaning was $60 per quadrant. My benefits list Rasin-based white filling which has the copay of $85 (the best filling in the benefits book). Just because the "Inlay Compsoite" was not listed specifically, I had to pay whatever the dentist charged - which was $187 per tooth. He does not offer any other "cheap" stuff that can cost you as low as $0 with your insurance. I am not rich, so I am simply switching to another dentist. After canceling my second appointment, the doctor said he charged for D4381 in advance so he would refund me for that. He also offered some discount for the fillings, which is nice so I will give him that. Oh, also, charging a patient while he is sitting on a dentist's chair is kind of awkward. I don't think that's a common practice.

Then I moved to San Diego for college and became so focused on school that I neglected my health. Before I knew it, it had been exactly six years since my last dental visit. I made an appointment with Dr. Ricardo Hernandez at Pacific Beach Smile Studio, and I couldn't have had a better experience. The entire staff made me feel so welcome--they offered me water, hung up my purse, gave me a towel, and made sure I was comfortable from start to finish. The office is spotless, everyone is incredibly friendly, and Dr. Hernandez is professional, thorough, and kind. They found 10 cavities and got me scheduled for treatment as soon as possible. I was extremely nervous for my appointment, but the staff gave me a little tooth-shaped stress ball and made me laugh with jokes before the procedure. Their kindness immediately put me at ease, and the treatment was quick and painless. Leaving the dentist I'd had since childhood was scary, but Pacific Beach Smile Studio completely exceeded my expectations. They took away all of my worries, and I've found my new dentist for as long as I'm in San Diego. I highly recommend Dr. Ricardo Hernandez and his amazing team!

Beware of All Coast Dental…read more Where do I even begin? In my adult life, I've never been asked to pay for dental services before receiving them -- but All Coast Dental seems to have made that their policy. Every visit, I've paid in full at the end of my appointment. I always asked them to run my insurance beforehand so I could have a clear understanding of costs, but they were consistently unhelpful. After I changed jobs and insurance, I informed them right away -- yet they still tried to blame billing issues on me. Their customer service is non-existent. My last straw was during a crown procedure they claimed I needed (even though I had zero issues with the existing one). The procedure, which was supposed to take less than an hour, turned into over two hours of extreme pain. While I was in the chair and in severe discomfort, they made me sign something -- completely inappropriate given my condition. My tooth hurt for weeks afterward. To make matters worse, my wife was told she also needed to replace her crown. Thankfully, I told her to get a second opinion, and she was told she didn't need it at all. That speaks volumes. Now they're saying I owe a balance, despite always paying immediately whenever they messed up billing in the past. They even tried to make me responsible for my spouse's bill when we had clearly stated we'd each handle our own. I get that some people might have to use them because they're in-network, but consider this your warning -- plenty of other dental offices are worth the wait. I'm likely going to have to take this to small claims court just to settle the matter. I just wish someone had left a review like this before I went through it.
