This kind of watermelon is hardly ever sold in Houston supermarkets these days. In my opinion, the produce sold here just looks better than the offerings in most grocery stores. The varieties of squash seem more plump and fresh. Part of the haul from the latest trip to Dilorio: Yellow Onion, Russet Potatoes, Zucchini, Ginger, Yellow Squash, Cherries, a Mango and a Peach. The peppers and greens looked good, and I was happy to see sacks of Black Eyed Peas in the freezer section. There are seeds, plants and flowers placed outside and near the front of the store. You see all the farming that is taking place as you drive into the property. This is family property and the oldest couple (Larry and Shirley) are the farmers. You see dogs relaxing around the property. You see kids fishing around the property. These mid 70s couple have their children help them sell stuff for them. The kids put in sell equity to ensure their parent's sweat equity also makes it to their households. I'll say this about their produce - if they don't think it's good, they will not sell it. They guarantee satisfaction with their watermelon. I've never heard of that before, but they do it. They are that confident about their stuff. I saw a Facebook live post with all their goods, and they were almost completely out by the time we made it there. I saw potatoes, 1 tomato, corn, watermelon, yellow squash, purple hull beans, and onions. I also saw cantaloupe, but they refused to sell it because the sweetness was not consistent from fruit to fruit. Bring cash to make it easier on everyone. Oddly enough, they do checks as well. There is nothing like the taste of locally grown, pesticide-free produce: *Corn is absolutely delicious. Worth the extra cost, and remember that these will not be picture-perfect ears because no pesticides are used. Snap off or cut off the top if you find a little worm and remember that this is what you do in exchange for natural produce. *Watermelons are addictive. Scrumptious! *Cantaloupe: sugar-sweet. Grab it when they get it, otherwise you'll miss them because they sell fast! *Red potatoes are WAY better than what you'll get in the grocery store. These reds make hands-down the best mashed potatoes you will ever eat. *Tomatoes (either from their farm or other local farms): nothing like what you get in any grocery store. These ARE tomatoes. *Squash: zucchini, butternut, acorn, gold bar and others. The flavors explode in your mouth! *Eggplant: the regular or Japanese (when they have it) variety has the most distinct flavor whether you're making parmesan, grilling it or frying it. *Greens: kale and other greens. On Tuesday, I was looking for a local farmers market close to me I found this place. I read. The reviews and I was like wow good reviews I have to go. I honestly did not experience the ambiance I read in the reviews. I was a bit confused because they had a very select few of stuff they've grown and stuff was from other places. I spent like $15 bucks and I was so happy. The same day the carrot got these big knots on it and I didn't understand why then on Wednesday the entire carrots turned black as you can see the pictures. Not to mention the cabbage turned yellow. I don't know why this happened and I'm very disappointed, but I will not be returning to this market.
