Held about once every other month, Van Weldon, owner of Wood Duck Farm, opens his farm to visitors for a tour and dinner prepared by a chef. The latest dinner held was prepared by Drew Wilson (former executive chef of Benjy's). Our experience started with an informal reception, while we waited for all the guests to arrive. Once everyone was there, we proceeded with the farm tour. Van grows various types of lettuce, tomatoes, herbs, micro greens, broccoli, beets to name a few. He also raises chicken and pigs, all of which you will see during the roughly 60-minute tour. Our dinner consists of food produced by his farm or from surrounding local farms. Chef Drew did a terrific job in keeping the foods simple, allowing the freshness of the food to speak for itself. Dinner was a five-course meal, served family style. Drinks were BYOW however, they do provide water, iced tea and lemonade. If you don't feel like driving an hour away to Cleveland, you can catch Van every Saturday morning at Urban Harvest Farmer's Market in Houston. In addition to fresh produce, he also sells a variety of prepared foods like whole smoked chicken and seasonal soups to name a few.

They had so many really neat art and crafts there. Also, we went back last night for the USWX Wrestling event. There were several food trucks like a BBQ truck and a Lobster food truck. You see all the farming that is taking place as you drive into the property. This is family property and the oldest couple (Larry and Shirley) are the farmers. You see dogs relaxing around the property. You see kids fishing around the property. These mid 70s couple have their children help them sell stuff for them. The kids put in sell equity to ensure their parent's sweat equity also makes it to their households. I'll say this about their produce - if they don't think it's good, they will not sell it. They guarantee satisfaction with their watermelon. I've never heard of that before, but they do it. They are that confident about their stuff. I saw a Facebook live post with all their goods, and they were almost completely out by the time we made it there. I saw potatoes, 1 tomato, corn, watermelon, yellow squash, purple hull beans, and onions. I also saw cantaloupe, but they refused to sell it because the sweetness was not consistent from fruit to fruit. Bring cash to make it easier on everyone. Oddly enough, they do checks as well. Supporting local farmers is easy when the farmers are this friendly.

Prices aren't always the bargain you'd expect either--many sellers charge close to retail unless you're willing to haggle. The food is one of the better parts, but it isn't enough to make up for the overall experience. If you're hoping to find unique antiques or hidden treasures, you'll probably leave disappointed after digging through piles of low-quality merchandise. Unless you specifically enjoy the flea market atmosphere or know exactly what you're looking for, there are much better ways to spend your time.

We bought Mexican tamales, Indian samosas, Thai dumplings, Argentine chorizo, Venezuelan empanadas, and some good old American sourdough (probably the best we've ever tasted!), along with award winning honey, lots of fresh veggies, some gorgeous mushrooms, beef jerky, and some delicious cinnamon rolls. The market itself is well attended by farmers, bakers, butchers, artisans, plant enthusiasts, and the community. I've been to this market several times now and am constantly impressed with the wide variety of options. Some local favorites include the fresh farmer's produce, sourdough bread vendors, fresh flower vendors, vegan options (shout out to Prophecy Foods with amazing vegan cheeses), and the ready to eat bites like Dumpling Haus. All of the vendors take credit cards which is convenient in case you forgot to bring cash. There's often live music and a few small tables to sit and sample your bounty and just enjoy the fresh air. While you are not going to find the cheapest bargain here, it feels good to help support small businesses, take part in a community activity, and score some healthy foods for you and your family. First driving in, we noticed it was not too busy. Getting out of the car we saw, heard and felt the hustle and hard-work of the employees rearranging plants with equipment and by hand, we heard them working with customers. Walking in, we instantly noticed the goodies on the shelf in the mason jars for sale and the cool outdoor decor for purchase!; we bought one of everything on the shelf and everything was so yummy. My favorite was the fig preserve (so good over cottage cheese and fresh berries. Thank me later ). We wondered around and placed plants together to eye what would look nice together for our backdrop behind the pool. This nursery was so chill (I felt free to just BE and LOOK. Also, there was a man working in the plants that was eager to help and suggested many different plants for the area that would work in the area we were looking to fill. What we purchased: purple ornamental grass and some Snow On The Mountain (sooo pretty, need to get more to fill in). We also bought some corn nuggets, dried banana chips, cucumbers, PURPLE HULL (already peeled and frozen in a bag), okra, and oranges. All fresh fruit and veggies turned out great with our lunch and we tried all the canned goodies as soon as we got home and unloaded all our plants lol!!! ((When)) I go back, I am looking forward to buying one of their whole chickens, more veggies and looking into some of their plants that attract butterflies . I recommend this place. Parking is very small, so please bring your kindness and patience. Customer service was very great, so the entire experience is worth the time and wait.
