Aldi is a budget grocery store chain with a pretty unique business model. That model ends up yielding a very different experience from what you get at the likes of Cub, Lunds/Byerlys, etc. But those elements are how they get quality groceries for consistently low prices. The majority of the packaged items you'll find on these shelves will be from brands that you don't see in other stores. There are some name-brand items here and there, but not a lot. You can't just think "I'm in the mood for a particular frozen meal I get at Cub" and expect to find it here. But if you settle for their equivalent, you will likely be reasonably satisfied. I think Aldi is great for things where I don't care about the brand. You'll need to buy bags from them if you don't bring your own, so I always bring my own big reusable bag. You have to rent carts as well, although I think you get your money back when you return it or something? Other concessions are that they don't usually have more than two registers open, even when it's busy. And it's not definitely not dirty, but there is minimal attention paid to aesthetics. One more concession I've noticed is that many of the produce items that are sold by weight in most grocery stores, such as lemons, limes, and onions, are only available in larger bagged quantities here. Everything I get here is surprisingly inexpensive, yet good or very good. If those qualities are important to you, you should definitely try doing some grocery shopping at an Aldi. read more

I love this place. The beef is very fresh. They actually slaughter a live steer in the parking lot. Ya can't get fresher than that! That said, you need to be aware of where you step in the parking lot when they do this obviously because of the guts and blood. The guy cutting up the cow gave me the knife and let me slice off my own piece. He weighed it right there and wrapped it up. Amazing! read more

I have gone to this store a couple of times every time I go, there is some kind of issue with the cashiers. Either being rude from rushing too much or being careless. One of the workers threw a receipt at me instead of handing it to me so they could get to the next customer. Another cashier violently threw items into my cart with my newborn inside. And today I had to drive back to aldis because the cashier double scanned an item. I had to wait in line and when I almost finished the long line, that is when she told me I had to go get the product from my car to get my money back, so I had to go back in and wait in another long line. read more

Aldi, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways. 1) 1-2 brands for each item. That means less chaos to look through to find things. C'mon, really, how many kinds of ketchup or mac & cheese or almond milk do I need from which to choose? I love the fact that at Aldi, I just grab some dang ketchup in the appropriate size and go. Too many choices = wasted time and unnecessary decision-making. This means that every time I go there, shopping is a little more efficient than it was the previous time, since it's easy to learn one's available options rather quickly. 2) Very few aisle hogs and people with badly-behaved children are in here. Maybe it's the "culture of efficiency," as I like to call it. It's just not the kind of place where one would want to bring a litter of unruly spawn, and that makes grocery shopping so much more pleasant. Back in the day when I was a young pup, we would go grocery shopping in the middle of the night to avoid the chaos, but now, all one needs to do for a peaceful shopping trip is go to Aldi! 3) This place enables one to get IN, & get tf OUT. BOOM! You're done. TYVM. :-) The employees are FAST. And SMART. And really, really FAST, did I mention that? And yes, they do move your items extremely quickly. That was offputting to me the first time I was in there, but then I quickly realized that they knew exactly what they were doing. They know what items can go on top of other items, and they do it quickly to get you the heck out of there.Then they immediately move on to the next customer, or shut down their now empty line and go back to stocking shelves and other stuff like that. They don't have the time to coddle you, because this isn't how Aldi works. You can't have everything, oh precious one. You can have ridiculously low prices, OR you can have lots of customer service and attention. Yes, they appreciate you as a customer, but get out already. The whole goal of Aldi's checkout system is so that they can get you out of the line and back out of the store as quickly as possible. This is how prices stay as low as they are. They don't waste staff hours while people poke around. If you don't want your items handled quickly in a checkout lane, and you want to be stuck in a line with employees and fellow customers that move slower than sloths, go to Cub. It's literally almost next door to this Aldi. If you need your special ego stroked while you're enjoying the social aspects of a checkout lane, and you want to be coddled while you dilly-dally as slowly as you desire, go to Lunda & Byerlys. 4) CHEESE!!!!! Their cheese selection is to die for. Like literally, I could eat myself to Cheese Heaven in their cheese section. But if you want regular old block or shredded cheese, they've got that, too, at prices that don't seem real. I've done many cheese trays for parties just from Aldi's phenomenal and crazy affordable cheese options. Sorry, Surdyk's. 5) Their produce section is good. Things are either fresh, or they're on close out so that they leave quickly. They have most of the fruits and vegetables covered, but if you're looking for a star fruit, fresh ginger root, or anything else out of the mainstream, go somewhere else. 6) Aldi stores are clean. Always. And everything is always arranged properly. Their employees are constantly maintaining the shelves and cleaning things when they're not working in a checkout line. In fact, if you need help, these are the people you should ask. They're not being timed like the checkout people are (AFAIK,) and have time to help you find an item. Aldi does run a lean staff, however. There will only be 1 or 2 of them running around, and you'll have to catch them as they're flitting around the store very quickly. 7) Customer service. If you encounter a bad item, or have something that goes bad too quickly, just bring it back when you come in to shop the next time. . You can just carry the item with you while you shop if you want, or throw it away at home and come empty-handed. While shopping, grab the replacement item, tell the cashier about it at checkout, and that's it. I don't know what their formal return policy is, but for individual items, it seems to be on the honor system. They don't give you a hassle over it. It's like magic! It literally takes like zero extra seconds out of your checkout process. I usually don't even know where my receipt is, but since it's only one item that I'm exchanging, they just let you replace it and don't make a big deal out of it. This is so easy! In summary, Aldi stores are wonderful because they offer a wide variety of super affordable items, limited options, and limited staff/customer involvement. If you're not a big fan of grocery shopping, this is your place. Nobody will bug you, and you can get out of there quickly.! read more

Like a pair of Lee Jeans I wouldn't want to be caught dead in back in the 90s, I used to feel the same way about Aldi. My mom and some co-workers convinced me otherwise. I usually pick up some things at the one near my parents house, but theirs is too far. Stopped in here later in the afternoon. It was fairly dead. Well organized, stocked, but didn't have the same stuff as the other one. Great, great prices. And they have name brand stuff, too. The off brand names still crack me up. Instead of Triscuits= Savoritz Hidden Valley= Happy Acres or something like that. Really great produce, however, look out for the strawberries. Lots of them were moldy. The cart thing I needed one of the regulars to show me how to get my quarter back. I had to buy a bag. I don't do all my shopping here, but dry goods are a steal. Cashier was very nice read more

Workers are not helpful at all starting from the managers. Their way of answering my questions was really bad with no respect. The store is not well organized like other Aldi stores. I ll not go again to that branch. My advice to you is to pay $1-$2 extra and drive to Aldi store at cleavland and you ll see the difference read more

This is my favorite Aldi location. They recently renovated and the layout is really nice. All of the employees are friendly and they are quick to open checkout lanes. I've noticed when other stores sell out of items quickly, I can usually still find the items at this location. read more

I am going to upgrade my rating to 2 stars. They seem to pay more attention to the check out lanes and get someone to open another lane more quickly/often. The produce seems to be better. They now have bulk Roma Tomatoes. Gather up how many you want, instead of them packaging them and making you buy maybe more then you want/need. A single person can not use 8 bananas soon enough before they go bad. If not making banana bread, they go to waste. Sad. Jalapenos too. They are packaged about 12 to a pack. I may only want 3 or 4. If I am stuffing them for appetizers, I want to pick out the right ones. I am very anal about the peppers I choose to stuff. Their beef roasts are now choice, not select. Beef, except for ground beef is vacuum packed. This is a huge improvement. This means if I decide I want to make say a stew, I can buy a chuck roast vacuum packed and have 2 weeks or so before I need to cook or freeze. Vacuum packed meat can be frozen for a long time and not get freezer burned. As a corporation, they still suck. No phone number for the store. No employees over 35. Do you get fired when you reach 36? The store itself is OK. Limited variety of brands and items, which translates to a smaller store. It's more like a large convenience store with good pricing. It's just the bean counters not giving a hoot about customer service that irks me so much. But then other stores in different type of business do not either. It seems as we are in a self service way of life. Is it the youngsters who do not have a customer service type attitude? Or corporate training them to leave the customer alone? read more

If I could give negative stars I would. This was my 1st and LAST visit to this business. I was in there on Saturday 2/6/2021, I brought a bag with me, as I was checking out the cashier is literally throwing my items back in my cart as I trying to bag them, they are landing on me, eachother, without any care about crushing/damaging my items, as I am trying to get them in some sort of order as he's throwing. Then as he is "thanking" me for shopping at Aldi, he is Literally and with force pushing the cart into me, I had jot Saud anything up to this point, but once he pushed the cart into me I said something to him, told him to give me a second to get my things in order he proceeded to tell me that I needed to move out of the way of other paying customers (mind you I thought I too was a paying customer) Now this has escalated and not ONE manager or other employee ever came up to see what was going on. I am a big fan of Aldi. Before coming to the Twin Cities I had never been to an Aldi and my first experience opened my eyes to a great place with great deals on your everyday food and random items. I really like how inexpensive everything is at Aldi and if you are on a tight budget, it is the best place to go to get your weekly groceries. I came to this location first and even though it was small and disorganized, the cost savings made up for the small issues here and there. I ventured to a different Aldi which was much nicer, newer, had more employees on staff to help you and check you out, and seemed to have a wider variety of groceries. Going back to the location on Rice made me realize how nice the other location was. The Rice location has max two people to help check out even when it is very busy, they leave pallets of items scattered around the store, and it seems more disorganized. If you aren't picky about those metrics, then this Aldi is a great place to get your groceries at a great cost, however if you prefer a nicer and more organized store, I would try a different Aldi location. read more

No frills is the correct description of Aldi. It's not my first choice but there are a few things that are actually a good value. Be sure to have a quarter to insert in the locked baskets if you are getting more than an armful. At least the deposit keeps the baskets in the store instead of all over the neighborhood. Aldi keeps prices down because it's about 90% private label. As other reviewers said it's just a hit or miss. One of the better deals is a wide selection of dried fruit and trail mixes. Produce is the dicey area. Aldi doesn't have a produce manager or cooled hydrated shelves just produce wrapped tightly. Inspect carefully as the items tend to be ageing. You may think bananas are bananas but look carefully as there are lower grades of produce such as bananas that don't ripen well, they just go from green to brown. One store may have a certain item that other stores don't have. Check out can be awkward if you don't know the process. You unpack and bag your own and you can buy a bag in the store. The checker has an empty basket at the end of the counter to dump your items into. After you pay you move the full basket to a counter along the wall and push your now empty basket to replace the one you moved out. Don't worry there is quarter inserted in the basket you have now picked up. ?? Yeah if you don't know better you could get lost in the shuffle. When customer service seems to be the biggest problem with this location one would think they would improve upon it. As another person posted it looks like they hire mostly younger people......perhaps they need to change their methods for hiring. I have not been there for a while but I do remember their bread and coffee we're awful. Limited pet food/supplies. I'm going to go there soon and hopefully they've improved. read more

Reason for 3star rating is quality at Aldi is inconsistent. I buy 75% of my groceries there and have learned the hard way there are some ghastly products to avoid even though Aldi will refund your money if you're not happy. Some of their bad products will ruin your recipe which means wasted time and money (the cost of all the ingredients in the recipe adds up). DO NOT BUY 1.Sweetened condensed milk - ghastly taste so I had to throw out a pan of 7 layer bars 2.Canned black beans - at least 1/2 the beans are split open, all are overcooked/mushy 3.Individual filet mignon wrapped in bacon 4.Frozen blueberries - too many stems and very mealy 5.So-called "real" chocolate chips - funky taste 6.Cocoa powder - hardly any chocolate taste 7. Pesto sauce in jars 8. White and wheat flour tortillas EXAMINE CAREFULLY 1. Cutie brand tangerines 2. ALL produce especially apples and citrus 3. Potatoes 4. Fresh sweet potatoes - they spoil very quickly on the counter at home so cook them within a few days, also they don't make very good sweet potato fries b/c what ever variety they usually sell are never as flavorful as other stores BUY (i.e. = to store brand at Target/Cub) 1. Real cheeses - sliced real cheese, wedges of parm and asiago - 8 oz muenster, swiss or provolone is $1.99 2. Eggs 3. Milk, cream, cream cheese 4. Butter - note that it's a lower grade (lower fat and it spoils faster so keep it frozen until use) than other stores-only matters for me when I bake certain pastries from my french cookbook 5. Cereal - we've tried several healthy and kid varieties and they are = to the store brands at Target/Cub 6. Chips and crackers 7. Deli meat 8. Fresh chicken, frozen ground beef/sausage/turkey, frozen hamburger patties 9. Flour, sugar, cooking oil 10.Fresh orange juice in plastic bottles think Simply Orange 11.Steam in the bag frozen veges - broccoli and California mix 12. Pork roast or chops 13. Boxes of dry pasta Fresh cuts of beef - Cuts of beef like roast or steaks is a splurge and I'm fussy about my beef so b/c cuts start at $6+ per pound at Aldi, I won't risk buying their beef except for hamburger. I would not buy food there, but garden supplies and kitchen items like salad spinners and other kitchen items are great and good prices. I have not gotten to the point of trusting the off-brand organic dry goods, and prefer to trust Whole Foods and local co-ops like Mississippi Market. Once I bought a watermelon there and had to get a refund as it was not fresh, and I would never buy produce there. The toxic cleaning and laundry items there make the whole place reek of toxins, so cannot be in there long. . . read more

This is a great way to shop for groceries for less. There is some obvious ways they go about saving money like not providing bags for your groceries, but over all it is a great shopping experience. I wish they stayed open later on Sundays, though! read more

10/6/19 i have been a shopper at the Rice Street and Hgwy 36 store since it opened. As a senior on a fixed income I liked the pricing and convenient location near my home. However, after the "remodel" I am very very disappointed. The location of produce inside the front door is an unfortunate design blunder. Everyone is trying to mill around the produce bin directly inside of the door and it creates a traffic jam. Was no consideration given to the fact that the produce which is the most fragile will be subjected to the open doors of extreme summer heat and extreme winter cold? Because we must pay for the remodel the prices have been raised. Therefore, upon shopping today I found the produce to look awful as I am sure not everyone is willing to pay the elevated prices and therefore its "rotting"! A far cry from the beautiful produce always in the "old" store! Somethings are better left alone! read more

So I was there on Thursday. The Thursday before Easter, I was with my toddler and it was insane crazy busy! Everyone seemed crabby.(the shoppers) so I was grabbing some romaine, had one hand on my toddler In the cart, opened the door and a biz of spring mix started to fall on my face. I grabbed it with my free hand (well kind of free with a bag of romaine in it) and set it back in the cooler.... I was short on hands. Then out of no where a gentleman who works there (who was stocking the meat) said in a very loud almost shouting voice " miss please DONT set THaT back in there like that!" Very rude, very condescending, as if trying to embarrass me and he did. The spring mix was already open, it was not my fault. I told him, that it fell on me and I didn't open the lettuce, he said, "I didn't say you did!!" I understand it's busy but .. Seriously!! I'm shopping alone with a two year old trying to navigate!!! Have compassion! However on our way out one of the gentlemen working the register was very sweet and totally entertained my son. Please let that guy know that his behavior was rude and innapropriate! read more
