First impression: small and bland,. The items do not appear to be in any sequential order. The prices are comparable to other full service stores, such as VALLARTA, and Smart and final. The service: not impressed- it feels as though I am entering into a self check store with cashier giving directions on what to do and where to bag your own items. They appear to assume the charge for bags also applies here in Ventura count, and when inquired an explanation, their reasoning was "that is how we provide you with cost effective products". In Simi Valley, with all this competition, I give it 6 months. In summary, for a grand opening, this is less than a stellar performance, we left with out any reasons to return. Now, they give you the quarter. They don't realize that most people don't take the cart, they end up buying less. Sad situation. read more

Nice selection of items and the produce prices can't be beat. Our first grocery shopping experience here in California, carried our items out. We will bring our bags next time. At approximately 11:30 am today I went into Aldi in a hurry. I was having company over for a late lunch . Upon walking into Aldi I was greeted by Deanna. seeing I was in a rush she offered if she can assist me. Yes! I was in a rush. Not only did Deanna greet and offer to help me, she took me directly to the items I needed. Deanna offered to grab a cart for me, seeing my hands were full with not only what I needed but stuff I came across I liked. What a bargain! Very clean store. I was a little lost when I first walked in as I wasn't aware that you have to pay a quarter to get a basket (when you return it, you get your quarter back). A hidden gem in Simi Valley. Went inside out of curiosity and have been buying groceries there ever since. Prices are low. Great selection. They have their own brand and it's awesome. Love their brioche bread! Staffs are great and friendly. It's nice to see a store that let their cashiers do this work sitting. They need to be comfortable too. Okay, I just don't get this place..... or the 4 and 5 star reviews. Yes, I get that it's dirt cheap, and I get that you have to bag your own groceries (although the cashier I had did them for me), but what I don't understand is how and why the store is laid out as it is, I don't understand why it has less than half of what one would normally find in a grocery store, and I don't understand why people are okay with this. While the shelves were fully stocked, it was, well, for a lack of a better word, WEIRD. Totally weird. I found myself confused by what they did stock, even more confused by what they didn't stock, and there was absolutely no order to what was where. I'm sorry to sound so repetitive, but it was just WEIRD. Brands were mostly unknown to me, and while they're probably fine, I guess I'm a brand-loyal kind of person...... you know, like Bounty paper towels. They are the best, and I won't buy any others. Anyway, I don't mind paying a quarter for a cart or even a bag, but the rest of their operation is just not MY bag...... so I won't be back. I really was trying my hardest to support new businesses that move into Simi. Aldi is a bit out of my way and shopping here means I have to make two stops in order to get all my grocery shopping done being that they don't carry a majority of brands I like. Regardless of this I have tried my hardest to support them but the last two times I have been in the store I was treated with total rudeness by two different employees. The worst part of this is that they pretend to be so cheerful and helpful but the minute you need something their whole attitude changes and they are burdened! The check out experience sucks, it feels like I am part of a assembly line and never can move fast enough...cart..cash ...ATM's bags and if you can't keep up with the cashiers that do this all day long you get the eye roll with a big fake smile to follow. It was my first time shopping at Aldi and I truly wish there was a store near me!!! I had business in Simi Valley so I was already out that way. They have great deals and a fun/new selection of pantry staples such as canned and jarred goods, affordable nuts and dried fruit as well as a varied selection of wine I'd never seen anywhere else. They have a lot of packaged produce as well. It's a full service market but without a butcher or fish department. It's as if good ol' Fresh and Easy merged with Trader Joes. AND they sell house wares...I bought a rubber garden bin for $4.99 and I've seen them cost three times that or more!!! If I'm ever out that way again, I will definitely pay Aldi another visit. In the meantime all I can hope is that the company decides to put a store in the San Fernando Valley some day...maybe in the empty Fresh and Easy space in Northridge?!? read more

This is the first time I have ever posted anything negative about Aldi on any forum. So this afternoon I go into my regular Aldi store to do my shopping. I get to the checkout and am waiting as I watch the cashier she sticks her finger in her ear and is digging around in her ear..... Now I'm wearing a mask but as it's my turn I step up and I'm not sure if the disgust showed in my eyes or she's having a bad day or what but she literally says nothing too me, she just scans my food and in the middle the decides to wipe her nostrils with her fingers.... In my mind I'm like WTF? I'm thinking are there anymore of your orifices you would like to dig in as you touch my food or hand me my receipt!? I was just flabbergasted. She did say, Have a nice day as I left , no smile or anything. All I could think of was going outside to sanitize my hands. So this cashier was new to me and quite frankly I hope I never get Sequioa again because from what I saw she's not really cashier material. read more

This is my first time going to this store and last one. You have to pay 25c to unlock the shopping cart. Stores tried that in the 80s and 90s and gave up because most people will not return their shopping cart to get 25c back. This is not Germany where that is normal. Also this store is much smaller compare to normal supermarket and as such selection is much more limited. Lastly bagging own bags? That is so ridiculous. I wish people stop complaining about using a quarter to fetch a shopping cart, or having to pay for a bag. People in Europe have been practicing this for so long, and they don't have a problem with their landfill as we do. Los Angeles started to charge for bags since July 1, 2011 and soon it will be Ventura County's turn. So you have to get used to it sooner or later. The "quarter thing" helps to keep cost low and it is good overall. You'll get that quarter back anyway. It may be annoying at first but is it more annoying than someone leaving a cart right next to your door or even worse, dinged your car with it? Oh, about bagging your own groceries, sometimes I have to do it at places like Ralph's and Vons. These guys are expensive but they are being cheap not hiring enough baggers and it feels awkward just stand there waiting for the cashier to slowwwly bag your stuffs. Most of the time I ended up putting my own groceries in the cart after paying. So if I have to bag my own stuffs and save some money, why not? I have shopped at Aldi in Europe and I love it just like this Aldi here. Everything is cheaper than Trader Joe's and Whole Foods but with the same high quality. They have different selections and many organic products to choose from. Well, everything in Aldi is cheaper than Ralphs and Vons too. Someone said they don't think Aldi will last more than six months, but I think if more Aldis open, big chains like Ralphs and Vons will begin to wither just like Albertsons. I hope Aldi will open in my area soon so I don't have to drive far to shop. read more

When the store first opened, it seemed like it was going to be very promising. It was all an act. In order to use a shopping cart you must insert a quarter, in order to retrieve that quarter you must walk the cart back up to the store and put it away. The company says they do that because it helps them keep their prices low by not having to have one of their employees on cart duty. As you're walking around the store, you think that the product is so great, the prices are low, and it's a great store. Don't let them fool you. It's all a gimmick, the prices are low for a reason. Today I went in to give them another chance. This was our fourth and final visit to Aldis and it's gotten progressively worse. We were looking into having some ground beef with our dinner tonight, their ground beef was brown and grey! Completely unacceptable! There was no one even walking around the store to greet you and see if you need help finding anything. Such ridiculously poor customer service. So we go to check out, we were in line and only one register was open with a few people waiting there. You must unload your groceries onto the conveyer belt, which you do everywhere you go. When you walk up to the cashier, they are scanning your groceries while sitting in a chair the whole time! Instead of them bagging your groceries, they throw everything back into the shopping cart. If you want your groceries bagged, you must do so yourself at a bagging station after you have paid. The cashier we had was unforgettably rude. We tried bagging our own groceries as the cashier was putting them back into the cart. The cashier (name: Spencer) told us that it's looked down upon because it slows him down as we're bagging our own groceries. He had a nasty smirk on his face the whole time. He didn't even ask how we were, nor did he tell us to have a good day. Why should anyone have to touch the product four times? 1. to put them into the cart. 2. To put them on the conveyer belt. 3. Take them out of the cart AGAIN to bag them at the bagging station. 4. When you get home and put everything away. They have shown us nothing but laziness on their employees, poor customer service, rude workers, and untrustworthy product. I'm proud to say that today right when I got home I threw my reusable aldi bags away in the dumpster. I'm very disappointed with this new store in town, it's the only store out here in Simi that makes you pay for your bags. THIS COMPANY DESERVES 0 STARS. It's ALDI... All the Europeans will know how it works and looks like... I hope they have more imported products in the future. So far I found chocolate from Germany, a cake from France, danish cookies, Haribo made in Turkey, some sweet condensed milk from Switzerland... The store just opened, so far it is clean, staff was friendly and welcoming... I saw the negative review and all you mentioned is the concept of ALDI. The concept has nothing to do with customer service, ALDI wants to provide discount food (basic food) for the masses. ALDI offers cheaper prices, because you pack up your stuff, no fancy displays, no fancy organic foods, you bring your cart back.... In Germany it is considered rude if you DO NOT bring back your cart and leave it in the parking lot.. you don't want that others can't park their car, that cars get scratched up etc... All supermarkets have locked shopping carts... The unknown brands you mentioned are private labels, it's the SAME food manufacturers that make other grocery store private label brands as well as the national brands. read more

I LOVE ALDIS. I always get a huge cart full of food for $100. I love their prices of asparagus, avocados, exotic cheeses, almonds, eggs and shrimp. The staff is also very friendly. I really hope they stay around. They are perfect for most of my needs. I don't really buy any boxed or preserved foods but everything else is awesome. A dozen eggs are usually around 0.80 cents Avocados range from 25-50 cents every time I go. And asparagus is like no more than $3 for a very generous bundle. Can't be beat! read more

I love this store. Have been going to Aldi for years in Germany. Of course all we bought was wine and gummy bears! A must have on road trips. The only thing I have noticed is the expiration dates are very short. I believe that's how they are able to sell at such great prizes. Hasn't proven to be an issue. The produce doesn't see to last very long, so I only purchase what I will use immediately. This store is always so nice and clean, employees very friendly. As far as the quarter for cart, smart move . Of course, this helps preventing stolen carts. Bagging groceries nice cause it helps making the checkout process for all faster. Aldi offers everyday basic needs for sustenance. They offer good quality and low prices on produce, dairy, meat and poultry products to household cleaning products. We checked out Aldi because we had coupon, plus we were excited about having a new grocery store since losing our Vons to the now defunct Haggen. I didnt know much about Aldi, so I had no expectations. I have to say...I was not impressed. The only positive was the prices. The selection is pretty basic...so, if you want staples at low prices, then this store is for you. Everything else is out the window. During our shopping trip my husband pointed out that one of the employees was more dressed for a night on the town, rather than a grocery store grand opening. The same employee was stationed at a free sample table with another employee that spent more time eating the samples and socializing with her co-worker, rather than greeting and welcoming customers. The fresh corn that was on special had mold on it. The pork tenderloin that we cooked this evening had gone bad and the expiration date was 6/25. Also...I worked for the grocery industry for 17 years and I have to say that paying for the shopping cart, the cashier sitting, and the stepping aside to bag your own groceries was a total turnoff. I see a lot of positive reviews for Aldi which is quite surprising... so if you really want to try it based on those reviews, then try it. We, however, won't be back, but thanks for the free reusable bag Aldi. read more

I tried this store when they first opened and was confused and unimpressed, but figured I would let them get established and try again. Well now I tried again, and my impression has not changed. The whole cart thing baffles me. I put a quarter in to get a cart...not a big deal. when I get to the register, they take the things out and move them to a bagging area. If I want to retrieve my quarter, I have to go back and get my cart. I didn't do that either time. The prices seem pretty good, but the selection is terrible. Even if I chose to shop here, I would almost always end up going to another market also, so why? Parking is pretty good usually, but I think that is because not many people shop here. It would be really nice to have grocery store in this area because there is not one very close, but this just doesn't cut it for me. read more

I think Aldi is a wonderful addition to simi valley! I have tried there produce, meat, cheeses, frozen pizzas and random items on there aldi finds have caught my eyes for great prices. Very impressed with everything I've bought so far. To the entitled people who think they are too good to bag there own groceries , that's just too bad. I have been too our local stores who have been short on baggers including Ralph's, Von's, Vallarta, and Valley Produce and bagged my own things. Its really not a hassle. The 25 cents for the cart, no big deal. Its so the workers can focus on customers in store and not take time to go out to collect carts. The service has always been top notch all 3 times I've gone in since opening. I hope the people of simi open up to it and don't bash it into the ground like every other business. read more

It took a while for me to warm up to Aldi, but once I started buying food here, I've noticed my monthly food bill has gone down. I don't mind the quarter for the carts. This makes me walk the cart back. I also don't mind bagging my own groceries because I like to bag them in the way I am going to put them away. I love the dried fruit and nuts section, the wine is good and the produce seems fresh, with some good organic produce as well. I always check their household goods area because it's highly discounted good quality stuff! Word to the wise, if you see something, buy it. Buy two! You will be sad when it sells out probably in the same day. If you like Trader Joes, you probably won't mind that most of the food at this store are Aldi Brand food. Go Aldi! read more

Having been to Aldi many times in Germany and knowing how beloved it is, I was so excited that it opened in Simi! The prices are wonderful, the employees very helpful and polite, and I love the concept: no frills, private labels, and bag your own stuff. The store is clean, clean, clean! For most of us, saving money counts- really counts. The quality of the private label items is great, and I do love their chocolate. I only wish there were more imported German items. By the way, the shopping cart system is really fantastic. Guarantees that my car won't get dinged by some thoughtless idiot who left his/her cart in the parking lot just rolling around (we've all been there, haven't we?). I came here with a friend for the Grand Opening today. I was soooo happy that they finally opened an Aldi's in SoCal! The layout is a bit different than the Aldi's in STL. They sell liquor which I have never seen before. Totally worth the drive from my place to get my chocolate fix. read more

I drive from Santa Clarita to come out here once a month. Our Aldi will be open by the end of the year, but in the meantime it is worth the gas to get out here and buy non perishables. I tried this store for the first time on Sunday and not really impressed. I was really frustrated that things were not together. I was looking for rice but the rice was in three different places. It seems to me that there is no rhyme or reason where they place their items. Since nothing was together in one spot. They do not keep a tidy store at all. When it came to check out there was only one cashier and he had to leave to put money away which took him five minutes as we waited. So I am not going back but so excited that we now have a Stater Bros. and I have now found my true store!! read more

Just got home from shopping at the new store Aldi here in Simi. Interesting... First you have to pay .25 cents for a shopping cart. I remember doing that 100 years ago when Costco first opened. I didn't have a quarter on me so the 2 employees gave me one as a promotion, not sure how long they will continue to do that. I agree with the other reviews, it does remind me of Fresh n Easy. The items they have are sort of specialty health products, some overpriced some not. You should also remember to bring your own bags or you pay for them at the store which I was fine with and you pack up your own bags, like Ikea. If I'm looking for health items I might shop there again, but otherwise, it's kind of far for me to drive as I live on the other side of Simi and the prices are just okay.. read more

First got introduced to Aldi's in Niagara Falls, NY and in Michigan. Stores are smaller than a regular grocery store and have mostly house brand items but the prices are generally pretty good. I was happy to hear Simi was getting an Aldi's store and this one does not disappoint. It is new, so very clean and the employees are friendly and helpful. read more

We've been waiting for this store to open last July after having horrible experiences with Haggen and Vons. Being on a tighter food budget due to financial contraints, stretching out our food dollar between 3 people and 4 cats is tough enough. Since then the savings from shopping regularly here have added up. The main thing is our pantry gets filled and the freezer and fridge get filled completely and the cost was easily half Vons or Walmart. Easy comparison is a pound of butter. Vons sells their brand at $6 generally. Aldi sells same quality butter (it's actually very good) for $2.39. Milk is easily $1 to $1.25 less and is rumored to source from Alta Dena. Corn Flakes $1.50, Full rack of baby back ribs around $11 depending on size. These ribs have consistently amazed us. They are very meaty and filling and we always wind up with leftovers. The one area that the savings are great are the baking supplies. Flour, sugar, real vanilla extract, nuts, all seriously cheaper than any other store. And we have yet to come across anything bad or of lesser quality. A side note on their sources. If you look carefully, you will notice the packaging is the same as major brands with the exception that the are is slightly different and it is missing the brand name. The corn flakes are obviously from Kellogg and some of the crackers are Keebler. So those who bad mouth this store really haven't given it a go over time. So what if you need a quarter for a cart? And bagging yourself? No bid deal. We bring two picnic coolers in the car and pack all perishables into those coolers after we check out. Winds up being so much easier. read more
