There's a saying to the effect that if you want good quality, you have to pay for it. Of course, we want good quality ingredients in our food, and prepared options from the prepared soup/chili bar are no exception. $7.99 a pound for soups seems a bit steep though. Am I not being realistic? Lately I've been having some health challenges, including dental ones. Dear Hubby is trying to keep up with my need for soft foods, but also nutritious ones. This is going to be going on for several weeks, so on his way home from physical therapy, he's been stopping at Gelson's to pick up soup for me. First he went to the Westlake Village location, and several days later, to the Thousand Oaks store. This time he brought me the albondigas soup. I preferred it to the veggie chili from Westlake. The Mexican-style meatball soup was filled with tender, flavorful meatballs, complemented by an assortment of vegetables. I was so hungry that I ate the whole container, where I might have stopped with half. Turns out that soup, while often delicious, isn't quite as filling as other kinds of meals. I'm not quite up to making a big batch myself, but I ordered some other prepared soup options, which we can add some fresh ingredients to the base. Mixing up that option with occasional re-visits to the soup/chili bar at Gelson's seems like a good way to keep my tastebuds happy, while also controlling the budget. read more

Look Gelsons is solid and sometimes you just want a little luxury when shopping for groceries. For that reason this market can't/wont be on my regular rotation but I'm happy this side of town had a premium grocery store. The store is very nice, clean and spacious. They do a great job of maintaining the store and I love their large parking area. Super easy to get in and out. The staff here are consistently nice and it's a welcoming store. I love this store for the bakery section. It's supreme and they really have the best cakes and cookies. Definitely A+ in that department. Of course they also have a nice meat counter and got to love a poke stand, even if it's on the pricier side. Overall docking a star because the prices are not a value/bargain here. For their premium items I totally get it but to pay an extra $3-5 on name brand items like sodas or pet food simply because your buying it at Gelsons keeps me from coming as much as I should. Groceries are already pricey enough that I don't need to spend more just to spend more. Overall I really like this grocery store and will always be back for their specialty items when I'm on this side of town. read more

I have shopping at Gelsons for over 30 years in Westlake Village. incredible store filled with incredible managers and employees! Martin and Quinn in the Westlake store are so caring and helpful. Diego and Thomas in the Thousand Oaks store are also so kind and helpful and Diego even signed me up for mail coupons. The employees in Moorpark, from Chris and Rosa, and Janet and Raul in Westlake are always helpful and professional and everyone who works in Gelsons is stellar in providing excellent customer service. Custom Cake. Do not get one from their bakery. Ordered a custom cake, picked up yesterday 12/13 and although it looked gorgeous. The taste and quality of the cake was absolutely atrocious. Cake was dry and the filling was not filling it was just literal butter. Very disappointed. read more

Always a bad experience at Gelson's in Thousand Oaks. Day before Christmas Eve, and I go in to buy pastries at Mamolo's for a $120, which is a family tradition. The customer service at the bake shop was outstanding! Went through self-check to buy a few extra baguettes, realized I left them behind, went back for them, and they were gone. Tried to get the manager to help, but she had absolutely no time for me; she was actually annoyed with me. I had to seek out my own baguettes again. She couldn't even look at me, treated me like I was trying to get free baguettes after I just dropped $120 at the big shop. Walked out of there with everybody looking at me; the rudest customer service I've ever received, freaking ruined my day. Next time, if there is a next, I'll go to Gelson's in Westlake. Gelsons is not only an amazing grocery store but their bakery and fresh food items are absolutely delicious. At the bakery, they had samples of their pound cake and I had to sneak a second! Looking for a birthday cake was crazy hard. I googled around, thinking I'd go to a local bakery as I rarely have the need, and got ABSOLUTELY NOWHERE for about two hours - waste of time! (incl Gelsons at WV) Then I thought of Gelsons in TO and called their bakery department. The person on the phone was incredibly helpful .... HOW REFRESHING.... getting YES, we can do this, YES, we can get it done in time. They had cakes I could get customized, so rather than mess around on the phone, I went in and met him. He and another woman helped me with size, flavor, and specialized topping. It would be ready the next day at noon. Took me less than 15 minutes. While I've always had mostly good experiences over the years at this store, the last several months I've noticed a disappointing trend. It always used to be, if there were more than a couple people in line, a checker would be called in. Not any more. Also, they instituted self-service checkout a year or two ago, but they appear to have no one there to help you when the inevitable glitch happens. Meats, produce and prepared items are probably a bit better quality than chain groceries like Vons etc. But for everyday common shelf goods, holy bleep, the prices are so much higher than other places for the exact same products. The workers and management are nice, they work hard--but all the other stores have nice hardworking people too. Much higher prices are fine when the things they sell and the service they provide is much higher. Sadly, I'm not seeing that as much lately. I'll still go there for certain things, but I think it's disappointing that they appear to have decided they don't need to be as good as they used to be. read more

We picked up a large strawberry shortcake from the bakery on the day of our event. I thought it would be good, but WOW! It tasted amazing: light and fluffy, sweet but not overwhelming, I can say it is one one the best strawberry shortcake cakes I have ever had! The whole extended family were raving about it and what a great way to end our festive evening. When I chose the cake they asked if I would like writing, but since I didn't they were able to add a few flowers at request. If I could I would give more than 5 stars! read more

Walked into bakery at 7:55, did not realize bakery closed at 8pm but was just in to pick up a slice of cake for myself after a family dinner. The employee was already closed up and just leaving the bakery as i was picking out my slice, he just said sorry closed and walked out. Seems to me a high end store would be more accommodating to customers especially since he knew i was there for one slice of cake, would have take. less than 3 mins to give me my slice which would still be before 8pm. I don't do most of my shopping here. Gelson's is expensive and many of the items are overpriced. So why the 5 stars? Because this is a great store to pick up some specialty items that you won't find at the regular grocery stores, which is what I go to this store for. The seafood department is selling salmon that can make you sick. On two different occasions, in the past two months I have bought fresh salmon that they cut into single serving pieces (2 per container) with herbed butter on top and put in a plastic container. They are charging a premium for this fish. Both times the fish was purchased before the sell by date, one 4 days prior and the most recent 2 days prior. Both times the fish was off, it was slimy and sticky to the touch and smelled bad, once it just smelled off and the other had a strong smell similar to ammonia. This is a health issue and I should report it to the Health Department so they can come out and check the fresh fish department. read more

I had a special event approaching, and their staff gave me a detailed briefing on the preparation and delivery timeline of my rather unusual request- a cake shaped like a hamburger. Not only was their delivery right on time, I cannot overstate how detailed their confectionary creation was. Real sesame seeds on the bun. Crispy french fries on the side. Love the place but the prices are going off the charts. Was shocked last night to find plain green or red grapes for $8.99 a pound - found it offensive. The fresh herbs are priced higher than ever and the size seems to have diminished to where you might need to buy 2. Thought twice before buying rosemary but needed it for my recipe. The service deli prices are so high and there are so few people shopping it lately. They are advertising a 25% off wine sale for the weekend but in most cases the prices of the wine is off the charts to begin with. They better get their act together as they are going to lose a lot of business when the new state of the art Whole Foods opens in the Promenade - feel badly for the especially nice people who work there. read more

I love the meat, deli and produce and am willing to pay higher for those items. But, the shelf items, milk ketchup all of those should be priced accordingly with other stores. I find it hard pressed to overpay by 2.00 on the exact same item that Vons carries. And sometimes the checkout cashiers don't seem very happy at all. If you don't think there's no difference between the commercial markets and gelson's you are missing out. Just look at the fish counter, the meat counter and you will see a complete difference in the look and texture of these items. Yes, it is a bit pricey, but once you sample their meats or fish you will realize why a store like Gelsons exist. This is not a new market, my family has been going to gelson's since the '60s there is one in Century City. The thousand oaks store is beautiful, clean and never very crowded. The Westlake store is huge, much more crowded and carries a larger diversity of meat and fish. Either store is a treat. When you shop there you will get to understand their sales and prime weekends where meats are 25% off even if they are currently on special. If you're careful you can purchase top quality meat and fish for prices comparable to commercial markets. The vegetable and produce department carries organic, they have a massive cheese department, and for real treats have them slice you your favorite meats in the deli. I love the prosciutto slice thin. Treat yourself to a filet of Halibut or wild gulf shrimp. Oh man! read more

A great place to run to for lunch. While the market is high end and pricey (especially for a college student), you can get a great lunch for a reasonable price. We went yesterday to get a sandwich. They have a make your own sandwich bar and it is stellar!! You can choose your bread, meat, cheese, toppings and have an option to opt for sides. The toppings include (all in the fixed price): lettuce, tomato, sprouts, avocado, onion, and pickle. They slice the meat fresh for the sandwich. It is definitely the best roast beef sandwich I have had in a long time. For the sandwich only (which comes with a pickle) it is $8.99 and if you want to opt to have two sides with it then it's $10.99. Will I come back? Most definitely! read more

Probably the absolute WORST Gelsons I have ever been too. They have people that don't show up for their shift, so multiple things are closed often like the deli or wolf gang puck. The wolf gang puck there is terrible. 1. On multiple occasions, I would call to place my order and would drive in 25 minutes later to pick up, only to find out that they haven't even written down my order and made my sandwiches.. which I would then have to wait another 20 minutes. 2. They have gotten the orders mixed up with mine multiple times. 3. When I call up, they direct me to the wrong department every time. 4. Some days Wolfgang puck is open, others it's closed. (MAKES ZERO SENSE) 5. For some reason, this wolf gang puck uses the wrong/different ingredients than all the others. I've only had negative experiences here.. go to Vons! Gelson's Market is the Supermarket of Supermarkets. This store in more of a museum than a grocery store and it's scary how perfect they maintain this place. It's as if someone goes around after each customer and replaces whatever item they took from the shelf or whichever produce item they picked from the stack. This store is absolutely pristine and their aisles are filled with amazing foods both brand name and specialty. Their selection of fruits and vegetables are top notch and always look fresh and never picked through. The deli selection has amazing deli meats and cheeses and you will definitely notice the difference on how they package them up for you versus your standard grocery store. Gelson's is known for their high quality butcher shop and fresh seafood section. Here you will find meats and fish displayed how it should be represented when buying products of quality. I'm sad to say that the phrase "are you kidding me" comes to mind when you step into this store! Cleanliness = 4 Aisles & Lighting = 5 Product Selection = 3 Prices = NEGATIVE 10 !!! My wife and I are healthy eaters and we are used to shopping at higher quality and organic stores. It is safe to say that Gelson's, even compared to the highest price points, is at least twice as expensive on every single product and when it comes to the smaller size of packaging to price tag ratio, I noticed that some of their prices are actually three times higher than other stores including Costco. This insane level of price gouging just because they are operating in a nicer neighborhood should stop and I hope all of us customers can collectively accomplish that. read more

We ordered a prime rib dinner for two and a brisket dinner for two. Both come with a container of Au Jus. Not only is it integral to the beef part it's also part of the reheating process per the instructions provided by Gelsons It was an important part of the expensive beef dinner. Unfortunately, when I got it home and was in the middle of prep, I discovered that instead of Jus there was turkey gravy. Turkey gravy for prime rib, and brisket. I can't think of anything more disgusting, and more of an insult to the brisket and prime rib. But that is not the worst part. These were two separate dinners. The odds of them just making a mistake and putting in turkey gravy in both would be astronomical. Clearly., what happened here is they ran out of the promised ingredient, the Au Jus and just filled the space with a container of turkey gravy. This is not a mistake. This is malicious disregard for any sort of customer service. I guess Covid took down Gelson's just like everything else.. Shame on you, Gelsons, that you care nothing anymore for the customer I have shopped at your stores in the valley and Rancho Mirage for 30 years. This place is right up the street from us and their fresh foods (meat and produce) are always very good. The quality control in their normal supermarket stuff is TERRIBLE. Every time we buy cheese or dairy from this place, it's moldy or sour. We expect, given that Gelson's charges basically double for everything compared to the Vons literally next door, that the quality is there. This place continually lets us down. Get your meat here. I'm definitely excited that this Gelson's is finally open! It's only the opening weekend and I'm thrilled with it so far. Inside the store is very nice and clean (as expected since it's opening weekend) But for first impressions of the store it seems great! I love sushi and they have a great selection to choose from! Today I got the Paradise Special from and it was great! The Vons in the same shopping center used to be my go to for some quick sushi rolls however they stopped selling sushi all together and I've been having to go 2x as far to get lunch. The roll was a bit expensive at $11 but it was very good, and seemed like pretty high quality for sushi at a grocery store. There is an outside seating area for people to eat, and they even have stalls for Volts where you can charge your car! I'm all for green incentives so this is a bonus in my book. The staff was very friendly and there were quite a few deals for it's grand opening. I sure am looking forward to coming here more and hopefully making this my go-to place for lunch and groceries! For first impressions I give the store an A+! read more
