Honestly my friends and I had such high expectations of this place. But 3 tacos for $16?? First red flag, we sat down in the corner no light, no AC and it was so hot. I walked over to ask if we could move and almost fell from the wet floor by the bar. The server came over and my friend ask about an alcoholic drink, lady said there weren't any?! Weird. Horchata tasted like it came from a mix instead of fresh milk. As a plant lover, it hurt me to see all the DEAD plants. Like it was so depressing, I started to fix the one on my table but like why have dead and thirsty plants if you're not gonna take care of them. The atmosphere was definitely terrible. We finally got our food and I asked for some salsa, for tacos bc DUHH I want salsa. The male server was like "it already has salsa" and I was like I'd like some more please. Which he later came with a different spicy salsa. Food wise, the tacos were good but not to die for. They're mid. There was also no pozole? In their instagram and social media they had pozole, so that made me sad. Then we get our check and the lady had put all our meals in one check. On the way to Alebrije, we passed several Mexican restaurants with full parking lots. East Nashville has more than its fair share. I can't help thinking that the folks at these places are missing out on what is an amazing gem in our city, for some of the best authentic Mexican cuisine in Nashville. While not a place that will amaze you with decor or your usual fake Mexican splashes, the food is a real game-changer. The menu is limited, and they don't bring you chips and salsa, which isn't even available. Various tacos are offered, including Carnitas, Brisket, Al Pastor, Chicken, and Red Snapper. We had the Brisket and the unique Mushroom Tacos. Both were amazing, and the Mushroom Tacos with pepitas, queso fresco, and salsa verde were quite possibly the best tacos I've ever eaten. Every bite revealed another layer of flavor and texture! We also ordered the Mexican Corn with tallow, pickled onions, and salsa morita, Mexican Rice with Snap peas, salso roja, and sesame seeds, and Charro Beans with hibiscus, queso fresco, pickled onions, and crema. All were incredible, with the Beans as our favorite. We split Churros with Dulce de leche for dessert, which was a fantastic finish. As someone who's eaten at restaurants across the country, it's rare to find a place where every dish exceeds expectations. Alebrije did exactly that. 3.5 Still on my truck kick.* This time, St. Patrick's Day found me in need of... Mexican food. Yeah, no corned beef & hash and/or green beer for me. I celebrated the day when everyone's Irish by seeking out something Mexican. Iconoclast. I do what I want. I'd seen the truck outside the meadery for a while now and I decided that St. Patty's Day was the day. Parking was... parking in Edgefield on Woodland. IYKYK. After driving around for a bit, I went to my tried & true spot and walked over to the truck. Ordering was easy enough and it was a one-man show so... time to spend. I get it. I got it. I hung out outside of Honeytree in the interim as I didn't want to drink and drive (so no sampling the goods while I waited) and I didn't think it was fair to take up space inside the meadery (during a boozy holiday, no less) and not drink. After a fair while, my food was ready. I took my bag and made my way to my car. Not wanting to go home with the wrong food, I checked my order. Y'all, I thought I got the wrong order. I'd ordered 3 tacos and a huarache and the offerings were skimpy. I called the truck concerned that I received the wrong food. I did not. I felt a bit uneasy. This food is not cheap. In the words of one of my buddies from Albuquerque, you can't serve street taco-sized food at [redacted] prices.** In the grand scheme of things, if this is as bad as life gets, I am blessed indeed. Admittedly, I tore into my food with a bit of an attitude. The tacos (bbq chicken, pastor and carnitas) were all extremely flavorful but the experience of eating/savoring them was almost over before it began. What was the most egregious was the huarache. When I 'discovered' them in Chicago, I was blown away by the deep flavor and the serving size. I called them 'footballs.'*** Since then huaraches have been a favorite of mine. This was the most expensive and smallest I've eaten in multiple cities of ordering this dish. And, no disrespect, it didn't even come on a plate with silverware. Unexpectedly delicious! My group shut this place down on a Sunday after finishing our St Paddy's day romp next door at the Coral Club. We rolled in pretty late about an hour before they closed. It was not busy so there was no wait. Our server was on & passed the vibe check. She was great & took care of my fully imbibed group with no trouble keeping waters full while the staff prepared to end the day. She even brought the rest of the horchata to the table for us to finish off after two people ordered a glass. They were out of chicken so for the mole enchiladas I subbed carnitas. I love mole & when it's on a menu I will usually order it. I highly recommend it here at Alebrije. It's perfectly balanced not overly sweet & a little smoky. I would have licked the plate clean but thankfully I retained some table manners despite my inebriated status. Finished up with a slice of tres leches. Their version was light & tasty. Not too saturated with the milks that you couldn't easily finish it yourself. Honestly, a perfect pairing to the heavier enchiladas with the mole forward base. This is world class food for the same price as a Chipotle bowl. I hope that Alebrije wins an inaugural Michelin Star in Tennessee - it would be well deserved. I first experienced Alebrije when they were a taco truck at Honeytree Meadery. Now they've got a great little brick and mortar right off Gallatin in East. The food is outstanding. We ordered shrimp empanadas, carnitas, and the pastor huarache. First off, the plating was gorgeous. Everything just looked good. The flavor matched the first impressions too. I particularly liked the empanadas. Too often the dough can be dense and chewy. These had a beautifully crisped dough filled to the brim with shrimp and cheese. Just excellent. The carnitas and pastor were cooked and seasoned perfectly. They both had a crazy amount of flavor packed into them. Incredible. A little piece of Mexico City in Nashville. Doesn't look like much from the strip mall outside, but the food will blow you away. I'm lucky enough to visit Mexico City a few times a year and Alebrije has the kind of complex flavors you can only find there. Ryan, our awesome server, told us the owner had been a chef in CDMX for 20 years....and you can taste it! Mushroom tacos, mole enchiladas, and the asparagus tostada especially were all exceptional. Love that the menu is focused and not just a build-your-own-blah-combo you see around so much.
