Popped into Algeria randomly at the start of their happy hour. Algeria is a bar within Bryant Street Market in NE DC right off the red line. It's featured towards the back of the market entrance and has a great feel to it. There are a variety of seating options: high tables, bar seats and lounging seats. I tried their guacamole and chips & sweet n sour wings. I stopped in not expecting much from the food but both bar bites were good. I would definitely come back for them again. Especially because this place gets booming at times. It definitely feels like a neighborhood favorite as this bar is nestled between 2 large apartment buildings. I live in Union Market and was looking for a spot to host a casual happy hour to celebrate my birthday -- something open and free-flowing where friends could stop by, grab a drink, and order food as they pleased. I'd popped into Alegria once before when leaving Metrobar and remembered it as a spacious bar within a food hall, which makes it perfect for that "come and go" type of vibe. Another bonus: I wanted a place with happy hour deals because, let's be honest, we could all use a break in this economy -- especially with the government shutdown looming. We arrived a little after 4 p.m. on a Tuesday and the bar was fairly empty, which worked in our favor. We grabbed one of the larger tables and a few seats at the bar -- ideal setup for a mixed group. We started with a few pitchers of margaritas -- cucumber mint and mango. Both were tasty, but the pitchers were mostly ice, so you don't actually get as much to drink as you'd expect for the price. That said, they were solid crowd-pleasers. There seemed to be just one bartender holding it down most of the evening (we stayed until around 8), but he was efficient and kept everyone taken care of with a good attitude. While the drinks and atmosphere are great, I do think the pricing could be better -- especially for pitchers and appetizers. The chips and guacamole were fine, but honestly, you could walk across the hall to the taco spot for a better deal. Overall, Alegria is a fun, lively, and convenient choice for casual meetups, birthdays, or happy hours in Union Market. Alegria is a bar slash Mexican restaurant within Bryant Street Market. Every single thing about the experience is great. For drinks, their banana punch is one of most delicious and unique cocktails I have tried in a long while. It is rum based with giffard banane du bresil, one of God's true elixirs. It is very smooth and has some light cinnamon notes. Really exceptional. The mole poblano manhattan is solid, too, if you like mezcal. It has the smokiness you expect with just a hint of spice, but not overpowering. The food hits the spot, too. Some great empanadas and ceviche, but my favorite is the chicken milanesa sandwich. Perfect before a movie at Alamo, a walk down the Metropolitan Branch Trial, or drinks at Metrobar, which is literally across the street. read more

For drinks we tried: Passionfruit mojito, Rosita clarified, and the seasonal red sangria. Presentation and attention to detail were impressive for a food hall. Love it here! Its located inside of Bryant St. Market, just walking distance from Metro Bar. They decorate for the season and its always a chill vibe. There is seating directly at the bar. Once that is filled up, it does get a bit difficult to order. There's a little ordering window in the corner, but the bartenders can't really see you if you stand there, so you may want to get their attention before heading there. The cocktail menu is curated and changes by the seasons. The drinks are always a hit. They don't really have a food menu but there are plenty of good eats nearby. read more

It's part of the new development that includes Kraken and Alamo drafthouse. I went on a Saturday afternoon and there was foot traffic but it wasn't super busy. I got some food from the dumpling spot and drinks from the bar. The bartenders were super friendly and greeted me as soon as I walked up. I started with a coquito. Initially, I was turned off by the small glass size but it was so good and strong. I then moved on to a glass of lambrusco which is a bubble red wine with a touch of sweetness to it. Prices are a little on the higher side but it's DC so shouldn't be surprising. Just when I was ready ro shut it down, I was convinced very easily to get another drink and ended ith a passionfruit mojito. Definitely a great atmosphere for anyone solo, groups or date night. Checked out Alegria for the first time last night with some friends while we were there for Coquito Wars. Alegria is inside of Bryant Street Market which is right next to the Rhode Island Ave/Brentwood Metro station on Red Line. It's easily accessible and even has a parking lot and parking garage next to it. The bar itself is small but bright and colorful, and the drinks are honestly not as expensive as I thought they'd be given it's DC. Think $11-$16 price range for most of what I saw. I tried a few of their drinks. The espresso martini was so creamy and delicious, sweet but not overpowering. Then my friend and I went to get more espresso martinis, only to be influenced by a few girls into getting the passion fruit mojito. Don't be like us, skip this if you value your tastebuds. That drink tastes like a bong smells. It was DANK, but it got us drunk quickly. We also got the Traveler which was fruity but a little spicy from the ginger. I came here on a random Tuesday afternoon and the lady behind the bar wouldn't accept my ID. Being in a food hall has its advantages with easy access to Poke, Dumplings, Taqueria Habanero, an award winning bubble tea spot (Tiger Sugar), Grassfed Griddle, BBQ, and much more! They have high-top tables, bar seats, and window seats and while the cocktails are creative and tasty, it does not get overly crowded (yet). I've always wanted to try this bar ever since it opened. We came on a Saturday around 9:45/10pm (it closes at 11) and it was very lively! The bar itself is small so it may be hard to get the bartender's attention but when you do, they are very efficient and helpful. There's plenty of seating in the Bryant Street Market food hall, so you can take your drinks away from this boisterous end of the market if you want to have a quiet conversation. We only tried 2 drinks, the mezcal and regular tequila margaritas, on this visit. The menu looks intriguing and I'd want to come back to try a few of their more complex cocktails. The food bites looked good when others ordered them, but they did seem small so you might want to order more if you're hungry or check out other places in the market. I had the Alegria Manhattan, which was made with mezcal wash mole, Averna amaro, cocchi americano, and blended bitters. This was the murkiest Manhattan I've ever had and it had no kick! My friend ordered a drink with mezcal that she was pleased with. I did not like that all the drinks we ordered were pre-made. This may have saved the bartenders some time; however, it resulted in a suboptimal cocktail experience. If you want food, they sell small bites like guacamole and chips and croquettes. 2) Service: Even though they were busy and seemed frantic, they were polite. One of the only places in DC that I would say is a destination for a drink. They specialize in clarified cocktails, and the clarification process produces an uncommon and excellent taste.
