Sara did a quick evaluation of what I thought was a problem with my receiver not producing sound from the speakers, which demonstrated her thorough understanding of the electronics involved. Alex has always fixed everything I've brought there, which is mostly 1980s audio equipment. I was most impressed when I brought in my Onkyo DX-7500 CD player for laser re-alignment. I'd had it aligned by other shops before, but it was never again as good as new. I don't know what Alex did to it, but since bringing it there a few years ago it's been playing as well as it played when it was new. Amazing. read more

I suppose that I should be happy as my Harmon Kardon SUB-TS5 now works like a charm, but it is how we got there that rankles me. The input jack for the "Sub In" from the receiver had somehow fallen apart and fell inside of the unit itself. When I took it apart, there were all manner of pieces-parts where the jack broke apart and came loose from the circuit board. Lacking a new Sub In Jack, and not knowing exactly where I would reattach it to the circuit board if I did have one, a brought the unit to Alex to look at it. The first guy that I spoke to told me that he did not think that they could get Harmon Kardon parts. But he would have his subwoofer guy call me if he determined that he could get the part. Two days later, they called me and mentioned that they could get that part and all that they needed was the $70 diagnostic fee. Note that I knew EXACTLY what was wrong with it....the Sub In Jack needed replacement. End of discussion. Replace the Sub In Jack. Didn't need a diagnostic. I then called them back and gave them my credit card to pay the $70 as I was told that the $70 goes towards the cost of repairs. FOUR MINUTES later, they called me back to say that the tech found that several of the capacitors on the power supply had blown and would require replacement to the tune of $130 more for a total of $200.00. I was told "no chance for a refund" of the diagnostic fee, and I did not want to go all of the way to $200.00 for the repair, so I initially decided to just "let it go" and abandon the unit. After thinking about it, I called back and asked them if they could just complete the original repair and put a new Sub In Jack into the unit. I was, after all, into this for $70 at this point. As I mentioned initially, I suppose that I should be happy because the repair that they did do on the jack did the trick and the unit works perfectly. But, the $70 "diagnostic fee" was a sham as I TOLD them exactly what I wanted done....I just needed to know if they had the part. The part, I am sure, is the EXACT same part that virtually every subwoofer on the planet uses and I am certain that they have HUNDREDS of them laying around the shop! I do not know what the cost for the part and the labor charge for making three tiny solder joints could be, but it turned out to be $70! ADDITIONALLY, and this is the part that rankles me, is that the capacitors were NOT blown, and were NOT expanded, and DO work just perfectly. They tried to BS me into a repair that was NOT required and probably would not have been done anyway. I KNOW what a blown capacitor looks like and none of these were blown. I have now put everything back together and the unit works absolutely perfectly. So, good work, Alex, on the Sub In Jack that I asked you to repair. $70 seems like a ridiculous charge for that, but I can live with that part. But, SHAME on you for trying to upsell some BS repair to rip off someone that you figured knew nothing about electronics. read more

Pretty good...Although I think a couple knobs got scratched up on my 1974 Technics amplifier. ...Milled aluminum and easy to scratch up.. I found new knobs on ebay. Repair was very good otherwise, and he works on the older equipment that is not supported elsewhere. Nice staff too, and a veteran also! read more

You can't trust what Alex tells you. On other web sites I notice people have had the same unsatisfactory experience I did. I would give them zero stars if that were possible. Perhaps with simple repairs they have done a good job for some people. In my case, a $2,000 home theater receiver, they completely failed, and misled me to boot. The problem is, as others have noted, some Alex employees will tell you anything but the truth about what they are doing. My dealer, Stereoland, sent my high-quality Rotel home theater receiver to Alex for warranty repair because they can't do repairs themselves. Alex had the receiver for nearly a month without repairing it. Each time my dealer asked how they were doing they said they were "waiting for parts from Rotel, which is very slow." I finally contacted Alex myself, and they told me the same thing. Then I went to Rotel, asking them why they had not sent the parts to Alex. Rotel told me Alex had not even ordered the parts yet -- after nearly a month! Alex misled my dealer and me. On Rotel's recommendation we have retrieved the receiver from Alex and are sending it to Rotel in Massachusetts for repairs or replacement. That will take even more time, but at least I can trust what they tell me. If I were Rotel I would revoke Alex's repair authorization, since Alex blames Rotel for their own poor performance, and still doesn't get the job done. I can accept honest mistakes, and I can accept the truth about delays on hard-to-do things, but I really hate B.S! All in all, my $24,000 home theater system will probably be without its "brains" and sound for a total of around two months; most of that time while it sat doing nothing at Alex. To give Alex some credit, yesterday they did send me an email apology for their poor performance and said they will strive to do a better job. I hope so. read more

I recently went in to Alex TV to have my 36" Sony tv repaired and I was amazed. I was greeted as soon as I walked in the door by Sara, Alex's wife, I believe. I was fully expecting her to tell me that my TV was too old, and not worth repairing. She assured me that the techs in the back would be happy to take a look and was sure they could repair it. She said she would give me a call the next day and let me know what they could do. I explained that I knew it was an older model and really didn't want to spend a lot, but the picture had always been excellent. She agreed that this model typically had an excellent picture, and that she understood my concerns as to the cost. Well, to make a long story short, she called the very next day and said the problem with my set was very repairable and at a cost that I found to be very reasonable. What amazed me, was that I had actually found a tv repair that did exactly what they had promised and didn't attempt to gouge me. That is very rare, and I would highly recommend Alex TV to anyone that values honesty, and professionalism. Thank You Alex TV! I had a very good experience at Alex Audio and Video Service. I needed a new bulb for my DLP television and simply took the casing out of my television, drove up to Alex's, got a replacement in five minutes and paid a fair price compared to what you find elsewhere. read more

I recently stopped into the store to get a few parts replaced on a board for a Samsung TV and they only charged me for a $10 dollar labor charge where everyone else I called had a service fee of a minimum $100 dollars. I had already did my research and diagnosed what was wrong with it and didn't want to have to pay a service fee when I already knew what needed to be replaced. I would recommend this company for replacement parts as well as diagnoses however I didn't need that but I am sure they would be good at that as well as they have been in business for many years. read more

I had my Marantz Sr 14 ex receiver at Alex AV for nearly 4 months until it was fixed. Whenever I would call, I would be told that they were waiting on parts from Marantz or that the tech is only working 2 days a week. Most of the time it was the waiting on parts excuse. Half the time when I would call Dave, hewould answer the phone and it was a usual Jeckle and hyde routine from being rude and slamming the phone receiver in your ear to being very nice and helpful! I never knew how he was going to act! 4 months and 400$ later, I went to pick up the receiver and wanted them to demo it before taking it home. Dave had a minor meltdown over hooking it up and was making snarky comments when I just wanted to finish signing and paying so I could leave! Now, a week later my receiver is having issues powering on. I will not take it back to them to fix -even if it is their fault! I'd rather ship it out for repair than go back to them. This is not good customer service. They are pretty much the only player in town for receiver repair and they know it. Caveat Emptor! read more

If you are an audiophile as I am, and you have expensive equipment that was built at the apex of the sound reproduction era (1968-1975), this is the place to have it brought back to original factory specs. Alex took my tired Kenwood KR 9600 Stereo Receiver (they don't come any better or more powerful) which I bought new 40-odd years ago and brought it back to life. Everything works like new from the deep rich sound, to the hookups, to the super-sensitive controls. I nearly cried from joy as I tested each feature of my restored unit. I have a second KR 9600 and a KR 7600 which I will be sending to him shortly. All I can say is that if you want the perfection you paid for restored, this is not just the only game in town, or the only game in the country...... It's the only game--- PERIOD!!! Took my tv to Alex for a relatively simple coaxial connector repair. Estimates were 2 to 5 days for the repair. It took 3 weeks. A long, confusing, frustrating 3 weeks. Eventually, my frustrations turned to apathy after hearing excuse after excuse. I just wanted my tv back. When I was first told that the replacement part they ordered was defective, I was ok with it (even though I had to track down the information with multiple calls instead of them letting me know we had a delay.) So, a new part was ordered. Again... this one was defective, too. And then a 3rd part. Again... defective. Now, at this point, I would begin to question where the parts were being ordered from. When I noted that this was the 3rd defective part, the Alex employee, Dave, responded with "Well, whatever." Terrible. Every time I called, I felt like I was bothering Dave. And he never had anything close to an answer or customer service presence. He would huff and puff. Complain about his computer. Act frustrated that he had to check with people in the back. Et al. For her part, Sara (owner?) stepped in toward the end to try to explain the situation. But it was too late. I heard only excuses. To be honest, I don't care if you have a bad parts distributor or what the in-store employee relationships are like. I paid for service (based partly on completion date) and expect that to be fulfilled. If you take a loss for defective parts, so be it. But the customer shouldn't be the one taking on the brunt of your problem(s). I paid my bill (in full). I got my television back after 3+ weeks. And I won't be back. I advise any readers in need of tv repair to be cautious of this place as well. read more

Alex worked on my new chance purchase of a Sansui QRX 5500 receiver that had been sitting in a garage for quite a few years. Tuner wasn't working and other issues including cosmetic ones. Well after about a week I got a call from Alex explains what the situation was and where we were at with the repair. I knew some costs were going to be involved and he was very upfront about them. I really liked the unit so I went ahead with the repairs. I got it back (about 10 days total) and WOW!! It was all cleaned and polished and worked perfectly. I am very pleased to have this piece in my vintage store as the cornerstone to our audio area. It plays anything and everything as if brand new. I'll try to keep this as non editorial as I'm capable of so that this review isn't written off as being belligerent. I brought in my 1980 bang and olufsen console record player as there was a short that was causing it to randomly turn off. I live in St. Paul so this was a bit of a drive. They charged $50 to begin looking at it. A week later, they called and said they didn't have the expertise to repair it, and that they would refund the $50. At this point I wondered why they even took it in, but at least I was going to be refunded my money. When I arrived a few weeks later (it took me a while to get back there from St. Paul), I walked in to see my unit sitting out on a table in their showroom. Something about the top looked eschew so I went and looked at it. The dust cover for the record player, was snapped off. I waited my turn, and patiently asked "so what happened to my record player?" The person behind the counter didn't handle my item so she called the woman who was. She immediately informed the person who was there that she knew for a fact it was brought in that way. I asked to speak directly to her, where she defensively told me that there was no way they broke the item. Frustrated, I left without my item after asking them to investigate further when the repairman who handled the console was back in. They promised to call after further investigation. A number of days later, no call. I called them- was met with hostility from the same woman I spoke with on the phone originally. After applying logic and reason to the situation, she finally asked "so what do you want me to do?!?" I asked her to simply return my unit back to the condition in which I left it. She seemed perplexed as to how to do this (do you not work at an a/v repair place?!?) at this point I was pretty exasperated, so I offered to find the replacement part as she seemed incapable of using the Internet to do so. A 1 minute search later, I found the part for $40 on eBay. I sent her the link. I am giving them 2 stars because they did follow through on purchasing it and installing it. In the end she did begrudgingly admit they broke it...and never did I receive an apology. I don't think all of the staff at Alex are of the same ilk, just be warned. read more

Dropped off my grandfather's turn table to be fixed if possible. Had listened to it for several years after his passing when it began to sound funny. Brought it in in May. It's now August when I finally get it back and it's not fixable. I paid, what I was told at the time of drop off is refundable if work can not be completed such as a bad amp, $70. I pick it up today after being told it has a bad amp and the parts aren't available. Then I'm told the $70 deposit is not refundable. How is that customer service!? You tell one thing to get the customer's money and then in the end you go back on what you say. It's really frustrating waiting 3 months with a $70 falsely refundable deposit. $70 is just shy of the cost of a new record player. I feel quite robbed of my hard earned money and all that time waiting to play records again. I'd say forget attempting to get it fixed here. Just buy a new one if you have an older record player. read more
