Even though I ultimately didn't do the project, Alex was great to work with. First he responded quickly to my call. We made an appointment for him to come over and look at my plans and the job. He listened, that's actually a big one as some contractors seem not to. We discussed back and forth what I had planned and he made sure we had a full understanding of what each of us expected and was responsible for before he went off to do a detailed estimate. Once I got the estimate I wanted to add a minor item and clarify some wording, he got the revisions back to me quickly. I called Alex for a very small project after reading some outstanding Yelp reviews. I called him on a Thursday or a Friday, briefly discussed my small project and he said he'd call me back in a day or two since he wasn't in his office and couldn't take down all my info. So, a couple days go by and I don't hear from him. I decide to give him the benefit of the doubt, figuring he's busy, slipped his mind, etc. Call him back, get a hold of him, get him to come out and look at my job. He says he's interested and can commit to doing it in a couple weeks (he admitted to being very busy) and he would get back to me in a couple days with a quote. A week goes by and I didn't hear back. Sent him a brief email asking if he's still interested in giving me a bid. No reply. Is it that difficult to just tell people "i'm sorry but i'm too busy right now, you would be better off looking for someone else." Or quite simply "your job isn't big enough and I'm looking for bigger work that pays more." It's honest and I would completely understand, with no hard feelings. I wanted to like this guy. He's really personable and seems nice in person, and I'm sure his work is good (based on the reviews). He also seemed pretty passionate about his work and all the different experience in various trades that he has. As in ... construction is more of a "living" as opposed to just a "job" kind of thing. You don't find that a whole lot with contractors these days ... at least I haven't come across too much of it. Unfortunately, based on my brief experience with him, he's just another contractor, like so many others, who have uttered the words "yes i'm interested in doing your job, let me get you a bid in a couple days" and you never hear from again. :( read more

If you're in the Bay Area and need a great detail-oriented contractor, Alex comes HIGHLY recommended! We hired Alex to insulate and finish our living room and we are VERY happy with the result. Alex is very patient and does excellent work! We have a run-of-the-mill early 50s ranch home in Sunnyvale but have eclectic taste that often leads us to unusual products for finishes and treatments. The particular wood-plank product we chose was unfortunately very inconsistent in its fabrication. We have had issues with other contractors when dealing with the odd materials we sometimes pick - but not so with Alex. He did amazing detail work and went to great lengths to see this unusual and frustrating product through to a finished wall that everyone compliments. Thanks Alex! EDIT - We also had Alex back out to reno our bathroom (the bathroom in his pics with the blue glass tile and gray floor). Every detail about the job was specific, tight, and custom, and the tile sub ran into lots of trouble cutting the glass tile. I am writing this review with joy and reliefs from all the headache that I had from a problem with my dishwasher. When I moved into new home in Dublin recently I wanted to replace old dishwasher to a new LG dishwasher. I have purchase a new unit at the Lowes and scheduled to install on the day that I move in. Well, the installer from Lowes came out stated that it was not possible to uninstall and install new dishwasher because the interference issue that caused by a new wooden floor installed by previous owner. I'd like to point out that of all of Alex's reviews, the only ones that are not 5 stars are those for whom he did NOT do any work. He answers his own phone, there's no giant corporate office taking messages, so if you don't hear back... call again!! He's worth it!! We were lucky and hit him in between much larger jobs. Alex is very professional, and clearly knows his craft. We contacted Alex to create shelving in our garage, including a 6 foot work bench area in the design. I contacted him just before Christmas, and he had time before a larger job and fit in our small job over the holiday. We also needed electrical work done to plug in new shop lights in the ceiling and an outlet at the new work bench - which they also handled. The end result was an extremely sturdy, well built shelving that exactly met our measurement requirements and completely overhauled our garage. We are so happy with the finished results. In addition, they switched out a few things in our electrical that weren't up to code. All in all, the attention to detail of our requested project was perfect. Alex was receptive to our input and the end product was exactly what we'd hoped to have. The price was incredibly reasonable, and our garage is AMAZING! All the clutter is stored, the work bench is perfect, and the additional outlet to the workbench and new lighting has transformed the space. We have been through way to many projects in our little home, but this was going to be one of the last. From day ONE, Alex inspired trust. I also see that echoed in the other reviews. He is an incredible designer, taking my pointing and gesturing and turning it into exactly what was in my mind's eye. Spectacular attention to detail, embodies the words professional and work ethic. There are always some sort of problems in any project. In this case, Alex took over when minor issues arose and made them his problem, not mine! ( like digging post holes in the famous Fremont adobe clay). He patched up the problems caused by the previous workers, and was always cheerful and composed! I am a deliberate and cautious person, but Alex won me over quickly. Alex worked on our master bathroom as if it were his own. He is patient, unflappable and a master craftsman. Not only did we turn our bathroom around 180 degrees, we replaced all five windows in the bathroom and reconfigured two closets to accommodate the shower and toilet. All the wood trims around the windows needed to be taken apart and put back once the new windows were installed. Alex showed extreme care in this process and every piece of wood trim was assembled in its original state. Where necessary he built new woodwork to match the old. Alex oversaw the entire project and I could not be more pleased with the final product. I thought I was detail oriented until Alex showed me another dimension. I found Alex on Yelp and had him fix a very long piece of house trim/window sill that suffered from dry rot. The piece of trim was sloped and would be difficult to remove and replace since it needed to match the slope on a bordering piece of trim. Alex and his worker managed to get the piece out without damaging the surrounding wood and replaced it in such a way that one would never know it had been replaced. It was painstaking work that required a lot of patience, perseverance and skill. Both men showed me they were real craftsmen. They will be my go-to company in the future. read more

Alex is an artist with wood, a finish carpenter who takes great pride is his work. In 2009, he designed and built 2 sets of open shelves in my home and they are amazingly beautiful and useful. Alex works quietly, carefully, is dependable, and maintains his schedule. He provides ongoing communication about design options and progress. Alex has completed three projects at our house and overseen a fourth. These projects included 1) an interior wall rebuild (plus plastering and painting); 2) an installation of a new exterior kitchen door (plus painting); 3) a rebuild of laundry room door, threshold, and floor that were absorbing water; and 4) overseeing a new roof. His work is solid, his rates are great, he is very easy to work with, he communicates well and stays in touch, he's very straight forward, is always on time, makes us aware of all the options and stands behind his work. Two projects stand out in particular. The rebuild of our dining room wall was done so well that it seamlessly blends into the rest of the room. That room gets a lot of bright sunlight and so it would be easy to see if the job had been done anything short of excellent. For the laundry room project, Alex diagnosed and fixed the problem at literally a tenth of the cost three other contractors estimated. Finally, he provides a lot of value added on the job. In one case, he sealed a bunch of leaky wall/ceiling joints without being asked and without charging since he was already doing a related task. In another case he used some left over cement to patch a gap in the sidewalk in front of our house. I could go on and on, but the bottom line is that you can trust him to do a great job for a great price, solve problems, attend to all the details, follow-up when necessary, in an easy, hassle-free way.
