Here is a great example of how they treat their customers and why we'll always come back: My husband called to schedule a tire rotation ahead of a planned road trip. There was not an opening for us to bring our vehicle in before our trip. Without being prompted, William took the initiative to look up our record and let us know that our last rotation was within a reasonable timeframe for us to make the trip safely and confidant that our car would not suffer ill effects. Car Accident... closest repair shop is Alexander's. Hurrah! Lovely people, prompt service, pricey but oh well. Plus they send you helpful postcards FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE with service reminders. It worked! I kept going. And the second or third appointment after my accident I noticed my car was pulling to one side. A friend suggested I get the tires rotated. The next time I go to Alexander's and ask them about a tire rotation, they say sure no problem. Fantastic! I'm in control of my life! I'm solving problems. Tires rotated, car still pulls, I tell them. They say, well rotating the tires wouldn't have solved that problem. Your tires didn't really need rotating. They didn't? Why didn't they tell me that? "The customer is always right," the guy smirks; "You asked us to do it so we did it." Hey, never again, guys, thanks. read more

Can they fix everything? Yes. Will it cost you either an arm, leg or ear? Also yes. If you have an emergency, yes, this place is an option. If not, go elsewhere. My wife went here, crazy overpriced estimate on her old carolla. Friend got an estimate on his subaru outback. They have no idea how that engine works, estimate was over $6,000. Needless to say, neither of us went there. Now, perhaps someone who fixes their own cars and has a serious issue could go here when there's something out of their reach but even then, there are other options. Thank god I have a VW and never need to go there. (South Central Imports down the street only handles VW and Audis.) There's a reason they advertise so heavily. They have to because repeat business doesn't happen as far as I'm concerned. read more

Air conditioning was blowing warm and emergency brake wasn't holding well on my GTi. Dropped the car off towards the end of business hours Tuesday and was given a complimentary loaner. Don't get me wrong, the loaner was totally disgusting, and basically out of gas, but it was free, so I guess that is what it is. Received a call Wednesday before noon that everything had already been fixed. I normally like a courtesy call to kind of get a feel for what I may be paying for, but the total ended up being so cheap (based on past experiences having my ac serviced at different shops) that I really didn't care. Very friendly staff, as well. They'll definitely be my go-to from now on. read more

I called ~12 mechanics in the area before taking my Volvo to Alexander's; hands-down the most knowledgeable and helpful service I could find. Two places I called recommended them to me. Their shop is clean and organized; a top-notch operation with top-notch customer service. The price was more than fair and I was able to talk with the mechanic at length about what he found. In the waiting room there is a huge window that allows you to see your car as it's being worked on. If I didn't live in Texas I would come here every time. read more

Though't Id give this place a try since it seemed like a nice place. I payed for an inspection and got a final estimate for repairs of around $1,400+. Once the job was completed, they tell me the frame is damaged and to take it elsewhere to get it straightened;wish they had told me before paying. I take it to a trusted mechanic farther away and get it inspected; they show me how Alexander's mechanics damaged a part I paid for and also damaged the bolthole on the frame. I show Alexander's the pics of the damages they'd done, and they said it was like that already, so why didn't they tell me before putting in all the labor, parts, and paying so much? They should have known the frame was aluminum and that it is extremely easy to scratch and very difficult to undo. They say its not their fault even though I showed them the damaged bolt that they incorrectly tightened and damaged bolthole they caused. Got a reimbursement for the stripped/damaged bolt they caused. Got $28 back out of the $1400+ I spent, what a joke, go elsewhere and save yourself some time and money. read more

The staff at Alexanders are super. I had tires ordered from TireRack.com delivered to directly to them - they mounted them on my VW Golf Sport Wagon's summer rims and changed out the snows. All for a very reasonable price. If you are looking for an honest local shop. Look no further. read more

These people are really reasonably priced. I used to go to Sandbergs on Minnehaha and have switched to Alexander's because of their good service. They actually send you emails and phone calls just to see how everything is working out like a month after you have work done. I recommend them highly. read more

I called Wes at Alexander's for a second opinion quote for a clutch replacement on my 2003 Toyota Matrix as I thought the amount the dealer quoted me was ridiculous. Not only that but they figured out the most efficient and economical way to get the repair done and also provided great follow up with me through the whole process. I've had good service from these guys. The rates are reasonable for being city mechanics and so they are always busy. For St. Paul people I recommend Tuan Auto Repair or Ft Road Auto, for all of Minneapolis I recommend these guys. read more

I've been going to this repair shop, almost exclusively, since the 1980s -- three different imports during that time (it has changed ownership during that time, I believe). They aren't the cheapest place, but I do trust them. They always call to let me know what the problem is and to discuss costs and options before completing the work. They also have let me know when it was most cost effective to let an old car go, rather than continuing to try to keep it going. They have loaner cars, so I can drop off my vehicle and easily get to work. Always good work. They also change over my winter to summer tires and store the out of season tires -- at a reasonable rate. Can't imagine going anywhere else. read more

Had my Audi towed there when it wouldn't start in extreme cold one morning (car had previously been garaged all season). The mechanics, however, were not able to replicate the problem the next morning. When I asked them if they had left it all night in the cold they answered no, it was inside the shop all night. Duh! They ignored my explicit co-relation of extreme cold and the car's not starting. Whatever. So they ran their $100+ diagnostic and found nothing. Fine. I'll pay it. When I finally got my car back after 3 days, i noticed the code needed to be reset for the radio to work. Called them up and asked what needed to be done and that i would be willing to do it myself if it were a simple procedure. The owner said I would be charged for this, but when I expressed that I had just paid over $600 and they still hadn't found the original problem it went in for, he made a big deal about how he'd fix it for me at no charge this time, like he was doing me a favor. My husband ended up resetting it himself it was so simple a task. Bottom line: they didn't listen to me first off, and the owner has an unwilling and condescending attitude that will keep me from ever going there again. Whole experience made me feel like a schmuck. read more
