This is not a restaurant, but they have a TON of different varieties of pierogies to take home. My favorite is the mushroom. It is a little more expensive than some of the other varieties, but stuffed FULL of mushrooms & 100% worth it! I also love the potato and cheddar. Those 2 are my go-to selection, especially since I never see only mushroom in the stores. I recently tried one of the fruit pierogies, the blueberry one. They are stuffed with tons of blueberries (not pie filling type, just blueberries). I pan fried mine, sprinkled with a little sugar and served them à la mode with some vanilla bean ice cream. What happened with Alexandra's pierogi? It used to be the only place I would get pierogi for my family. Not anymore more. For the past year the quality dropped tremendously. Pierogi are dark with black speckles in it- not sure if this is that kind of flour or maybe pepper. The cheese and potato filling is tasteless with mostly potatoes present. Pierogi fall apart while cooking. Definitely not the pierogi they used to make. We will not buy them anymore from Alexandra that is for sure. I wish they kept their quality that they had in the past years. read more

A great one stop shop for one of my favorites, pierogi's. They have all kinds of pierogi from sweet to savory as well as cheese blintzes, dumplings and other Polish delicacies. Now it's not a restaurant only a shop and go store. Still, they are all made fresh then frozen and packaged attractively. It's a great way to buy only a package or two or twenty or you favorite and take home to enjoy or take home and freeze for later on down the road at a very reasonable price. But as with any Polish food ya gotta be careful or you'll get addicted and well too many pierogi's or dumplings will turn you into a dumpling. Not that theirs anything wrong with that but ya know what I mean. It's a snap, you walk in the menu is on the wall over the freezers, the counter person gets what you want, you pay up and walk out. I went for one package of a dozen savory pierogi and left with cheese blintzes and sweet pierogi's too. It is usually pretty light on traffic, but it does get busy around holidays for sure. Well, Rosa J. yelped without any compensation, but Mama J. was sent to Alexandra's Pierogi on Central Ave., in between Addison and Belmont. I'm a fan of pierogi, so having Alexandra's within walking distance to our house is extraordinarily exciting. According what Mama J. commented, the clerk confidently recommended these three (3) flavors: spinach, kraut/potatoes/bacon, and CHERRY. For fixing the pierogi, there shouldn't be any difficulty. Boil water and drop those bad boys into the pot. Each package is consisted of a dozen pieces, so a total of thirty-six (36) pieces plus some other side dishes in the refrigerator should be a hearty dinner for a family of four (4). - spinach: it was my favorite out of the three (3) contenders. Spinach was chopped and mixed with cheese. It might be slightly salty for some, yet I preferred to be done this way. - kraut/potatoes/bacon: it was Mama J.'s favorite because of the abundance of the filling. You would probably detect that your stomach was half-way full after consuming three (3) of them! - cherry: it might sound strange to see fruit filling in a dumpling. Just think that you're eating a "savory" dessert. The cherry filling was very juicy, so be aware of the juicy splashing out of the wrap. By the way, Mama J. paid $9.50 for these three (3) packs. I've heard that the more you purchase, the less it will cost per pack. I will have to validate this statement since I didn't personally accompany Mama J. FOR SURE I will be back, without a doubt. read more

Last time we were in Chi, we picked up a few packs of Alexandra Pierogi at a Polish grocer. They were so delicious that I vowed we'd visit the factory store to stock up. Today was that day. If you're stopping, know that they do have a few dedicated parking spots adjacent to the store. The interior is large and pretty sterile - just a giant counter with cases of pierogi in coolers. I understand that around Christmas and Easter the store is nuts, but we were pretty much the only ones inside today. For pierogies, there are a dozen or so choices - cheese, potato/cheese, meat, mushroom, spinach, maltascher and then several fruit flavors. Prices are cheaper than local stores and decrease the more you buy (we paid around $3/pack - our local stores are around $5). They also make uszka ,meat filled mini dumplings, great in soup) and Silesian dumplings. Service is very Polish meaning more efficient than friendly. English is spoken but it seems like many customers speak primarily Polish. Looking forward to many pierogi feasts to come!! read more

I've been going here for my pierogi for over 10 years now. Even though I have occasionally tried others that I bought in grocery stores, I haven't found anything else that compares. Alexandra is the best! My favorite ones are the kraut & mushroom and the potato & cheese. My parents were born in Czechoslovakia, so my Mom made pierogi - light as a feather. But she lived in NJ, and I lived in Illinois. Years ago, I met a Polish lady. I asked her if she made Pierogi? 'No, I buy Alexandra's.' I thought if a Polish person bought these, I had to find this store. I did, and have been buying Alexandra's pierogi ever since. Their factory store is bright and inviting. The people working there are pleasant and efficient. The pierogi are wonderful, the flavors great. Some of the pierogi appear to be hand crimped. With more than a dozen varieties, and other items, there is something for everyone. Almost as good as my Mom's. Almost. I have to admit, though, they do not make the prune pierogi my Mom used to make. She'd simmer pitted prunes in water till plump and put one in each pierogi. I buy Alexandra's plum as a substitute, which are delicious. Still, I miss prune pierogi! Maybe they'd like to add prune to their line up? Best frozen, ready to cook pierogis we have found in the city. My husband is obsessed with pierogis, so much so, he orders them from New Jersey where he grew up. All of them were delicious but the sauerkraut was my personal favorite. Next time I plan to try some of the fruit ones. The price is great! The more you order the cheaper it is. This place is a riot. Not actually a FUN riot, but a riot. I used to go on these pilgrimages every Christmas down to northern Indiana to buy pierogi for Christmas Eve dinner - exchanging goods for cash in White Castle parking lots, etc. Really. But the guy working on our hours last year (ah, Wally) said "NO!! You spend too much! You have to go to Alexandra!" So this year we did. First of all, know what to expect. You walk in. There's nothing but a counter with a huge row of freezers behind the workers and someone shoves a little clipboard in your hand. While you wait, you check off how many of everything you want. So, BE PREPARED or at least know you'll have to step to the side. Got to the counter. Everyone tried speaking to me in Polish. I was flattered, but am Ukrainian-Russian and had to just look bewildered and helpless till they figured it out. Got my Pierogi and was out of there. I have never seen such efficiency in my life. My head was spinning. Reviews: the cheddar in the potato and cheddar is NOT american (thank god, it's a pet peeve of mine and common). People who love mushrooms loved the mushroom ones. The sweet cheese are perfect. Sweet cheese and potato are perfect. I have yet to try to try the blintzes. Without a doubt, Alexandra has the best pierogies in town. This place is a pierogi factory with a tiny storefront outlet along Central, but it seems all the Polish people know about it. I stopped in here to stock up for Christmas. In case you didn't know, Christmas Eve is a major pierogi-eating holiday in both Polish and Ukrainian tradition. I usually come in December to get Uszka, which translates into "ears" (little mushroom-kraut pierogies). The line was to the door but the 4 ladies working the counter kept things moving quickly and I was out in under 10 minutes. Seems everyone buys at least $20-$50 worth of frozen pierogies, often by the case-ful. Bulk discounts allow you to get a lower price if you buy more packs. The language spoken by the employees and customers is almost exclusively Polish, though the price list is in English too. To the uninitiated, it can be a scary cultural immersion. Behind me in line was a stereotypical, older Polish woman complete with a babushka, fine moustache on her face, and a bulky handbag. I suspect that she was sizing me up as an all-American boy having no business being here. I was expecting a dirty look from her if I should stumble in placing my order. The moment of truth came. In the best Polish I could muster, I ordered uszka, potato & cheese(Ruskie) pierogies, kraut & mushroom pierogies, and some Sloske kluski for my mom. Bam! I paid and they filled my order on the spot. The fruit-filled pierogies are really an individual preference as I'm not into fruity ones. I like sauerkraut & mushroom or potato & cheese much better. They are always fresh indeed as Kasia M. says. Cultural differences aside, warm some up at home for dinner with lots of butter on top and freeze the rest for next time. You can also find Alexandra pierogies at other Polish stores, including Jerry's Fruit Market in Niles. I can't describe in words how good Alexandra's pierogis are. My husband is 100% polish, and these are better than anything his grandmother, mother, and aunts have ever made. The mushroom pierogi are phenomenal and my favorite on the menu. The farmer cheese and potato are also wonderful. I'm not usually a sauerkraut/cabbage fan (aka kapusta), but these were great. The way we cooked them at home is by boiling until they float and puff up. Then saute with a little butter and serve with sour cream, apple sauce and caramelized onions. ::cue stomach growling::. i have been eating pierogi of Polish, Ukrainian, Russian, Lithuanian, Slovak and Czech varieties for a long time. Al\exandra's kapusta/ sauer kraut pierogi are awful.... so bitter and tart was the filling, I threw the whole plate of 'em directly in the garbage! I could NOT eat them they were nasty.......! Yuk! The dough was not much better, about the same consistency as Wrigley's gum! They were just awful, the first pierogi I ever threw in the trash and rightly so..... Awful ! read more

I heard about this place from my water aerobics ladies at the gym and just HAD to check it out since I am a true Polack at heart!! And I LOVEEEE me some pierogi! There was really no quick way to get here from VP but it was totally worth the drive out! It is a warehouse-y storefront that sells refrigerated and frozen pierogi, dumplings and blintzes. And the prices are AMAZING! The more you buy, the cheaper they are! So, of course, I had to get the best deal and get 10 packages which made each package only $2.50/dozen! Yes! That cheap!! I was just as stunned as you are! HA! I went with the kraut and mushroom, kraut, potato and cheddar and sweet cheese. So far I have tried the kraut and mushroom and potato and cheddar and both were fabulous! The best Polish style pierogi we've ever had! They tasted so fresh despite being previously frozen and the dough was perfectly chewy and crisped up nicely when fried in a bit of butter and oil. I cannot wait to try the other flavors because I know they are going to be just as good! If you buy over 10? packs you get em for like 2 bucks each and if you go to a store a block away from there you have to pay 3 bucks for the same box lol... Hands down the best pierogi you will find in Chicago. The sweet cheese is my personal favorite. Other flavors i tried: sauerkraut & cabbage,spinach, mashroom,cherry,blueberry, and strawberry one. All were really tasty, the fruit ones are great with whipped cream. They sell uszka as well. That's basically a smaller version of dumplings, made with meat or mashroom ( great with barszcz- borscht)They might have other flavors, but I'm not sure. Alexandra's pierogi are as close to homemade that you will get. I agree with previous reviews that they run this place like a little factory. You come in, and all you see is a long counter, different pierogi options written above with prices. The ladies working the counter are nice. I can't remember the price exactly, but it's around $3 per pack, each contains 12. Around Christmas times it gets crazy busy, lines all the way out the door. So keep that in mind.
