I was craving a warm salted pretzel with beer cheese so we popped into this place (first-time patrons). There was an event going on so the downstairs dining area was full, and our only option was the bar or rooftop. We decided on the rooftop, which would've been super fun on a warm spring or summer night. It really was beautiful up there. But, it was cold and had been raining, so it was a bit of a bummer we couldn't be comfortable at a table inside. I figured I could get past being cold if the food was at least good, but the pretzel was dry and hard. They didn't offer beer cheese which was a bummer, so I tried queso and buffalo chicken dips. The dips were yummy despite the lame pretzel. The cherry on top was that the service sucked. The guy working the rooftop bar seemed miserable, like he would've rather been anywhere else. Arrived wayyy too early for a 5:15 pm appointment and this was the 1st bar close to my final destination. We stopped in for a late night bite. The place wasn't super busy in the dining area, the bar was busier. The food menu was everything you'd expect from a German restaurant. We split the Bratzel between the two of us and it was the perfect size for us. The brats were delicious and the pretzel was buttery. I wasn't a fan of the beer cheese but my husband finished that off. I liked the bratwurst and my husband liked the debreziner which had a little spice but not too much. On a cold Monday night my wife and I ventured out again in Old Town Alexandria - destination Alexandria Bier Garden. We arrived around 6:00 and were warmly greeted and seated immediately. The decor is nicely done and as expected in the theme of a German Bier Garten. There was a huge beautiful gas fireplace (not lit). The music was not typical though, we rocked to "You've got to fight for the Right to Party" "Shake it Up" "Sharp Dressed Man" and other traditional German favorites (haha!) Monday was not a popular night for most restaurants (inauguration day) but our service was on point. I enjoyed a liter of Krystalweizen from the great selection of draft and bottled beer. The menu offers a wide selection of German (and American) apps and entrees. My wife and I seized the opportunity to order the Jägerschnitzel with braised sauerkraut, red cabbage and spatzle. The pics didn't do the food justice. The pics show a small cup of mushroom gravy that shows up grey (try the grey stuff - it's delicious!) The flavor took me back to the times I enjoyed it in Germany. I highly recommend this restaurant. I would imagine that this place would be fun if it were filled with patrons listening to traditional German Bier Garden Music. Definitely worth stopping. read more

Stopped by the Alexandria Bier Garden for a quick beer and pretzel as a pre-New Year's Eve snack and will definitely be back to hang out longer next time. Given the place was getting prepared for a big bash later in the evening, I was pleasantly surprised how fast and helpful the service was. We walked in as a party of two and easily found a high-top near the bar. Our server/bartender greeted us warmly and made some great suggestions from the drink menu. I opted to try a biertail, aka beer cocktail, and our server recommended the bourbon option as his favorite based on it not being as sweet as the Berliner and other options. That description fit my profile so I went for it and was not disappointed. My husband opted for the dopplebock and that was great as well. We ordered a giant pretzel, which came with beer cheese and two varieties of mustard. The pretzel was soft, almost cake like and not too much salt, which I was happy about. Worst CS ever ! I went to celebrate my BDay (12 people) for the karaoke. The security guard was rude to one of my friend; PROBLEM :She arrived, didn't see him outside, and walked in without showing her ID ( by the way the same employee hadn't asked me or another friend for ID upon entry). He immediately intercepted her very aggressively, demanding she leave. She didn't understand why at first, but once she realized, she showed him her ID; despite this, he kept insisting she leave and re-enter physically intimidating her, so she argued she felt attacked. I went over to try to understand why he was kick her out ( he ignored me) I was afraid and I asked to speak to the manager for help, as his behavior toward two women was physically intimidating. Managment "solution" : To my great dismay, the manager arrived with a bad attitude too; he cut me off and took my friend aside to scold her as if she were his daughter. Beyond his machismo, he even displayed racism by saying that "Latinos sometimes want to do whatever they please." (No apology for how his employee treated us) Because of the noise, no one else noticed what was happening--it was taking place at the entrance. I didn't say anything until later because I was trying to salvage the party/ avoid escalating the situation, but I was furious about what happened. * I worked in americans restaurants for over ten years, and neither as a server nor as a manager would such treatment of a customer--even an intoxicated one--ever have been tolerated. Biergarten Clearly has NO IDEA what customer service is. **Standard way of solving : Would have been to tell the customer politely "Excuse me, but next time show me your ID please now enjoy your night". On top of that for karaoke the sound was awful, and the lyrics were sometimes cutting out on the screen, probably because of the internet or the service, I don't know. Avoid this place for karaoke and caution with the managment conduct. read more

My fiancé and I are huge brewery/beer garden fans, especially German beer gardens! We sat up on the rooftop at the bar and sampled a few of their beers, which were all great. We had 2 sausages and 2 sides, the bratwurst, a traditional German beef & pork sausage and the Debreziner, a pork and beef Spicy Hungarian paprika sausage. We also had a cucumber salad and spaetzle. The spaetzle wasn't my favorite, but not bad either. The sausages were so so good, I just didn't realize the ones we ordered were without buns. There's lots of seating up on the balcony with its own bar and lots of inside seating as well, downstairs. There's food/drink specials everyday and lots of activities too! read more

I never visited while I lived here, but the Alexandria Bier Garden is worth a visit. You just have to be thirsty. We ordered some brats, which were delicious. The server was helpful and informative. We also thought we were ordering some type of flight, but the quantity of beer that comes out is like a liter so don't think it's a flight. Fortunately the server prevented me from ordering one for me and one for my wife. The beers were great, too and I can't wait to return. Excellent place. Since the management change, it's really improved. The prior management kept it pretty dirty, and I was so shocked at the dust and dirt in places you wouldn't want it. We stopped going because of that. That is now gone thanks to the new ownership, I assume. The place is revamped and clean . The food is great! We didn't know they had brunch until recently, and we love it and go there all the time for it now. Their brats and pretzels are really good. It's always a great time here. I took my family of eight for a Saturday brunch. Very few German dishes, very disappointing as my grandson choose it to experience German food. Eight people left feeling all dishes subpar and certainly not show casing the best of German cuisine. The ambiance definitely had a Germany feel to it, which was nice; however, the menu was a mix of Mexican and German. My wife and I ordered a platter of mixed sausages (6) and 2 sides. The wursts were great but the red cabbage and German potato salad were nowhere near authentic. The red cabbage had no flavor and the potato salad was missing key flavor ingredients. LOVE the vibes of the place! And the food was good not overly seasoned on anything. The pork schnitzel was super crispy and tender, beers were super cold, crisp, and refreshing. The chocolate cake was perfect for my taste! It was not too sweet, super chocolaty and the cocoa flavors was very present. I came from out of town for a St Pattys Day event advertised on evenbrite. Not sure where the disconnect was but some friends of mine pre paid for some beers and the bartender had NO IDEA what we were referring too. So kudos to the marketing team for getting us in the door but they said they opened at noon, and didn't open till 4. Thankfully other restaurants nearby were in full swing but it would've been devastating if not. Finally we got our green beer, chicken tendies and pretzel. The food hit the spot! The tenders were made with panko, so if you know you know about that crunch! The lady who was a server or manager with the black hair gave us a comp round for the mix up, so all was well. She too wanted to see the ad as well. The women's bathroom is very instagrammable and so is the ambiance on the second floor. Just beautiful. The rooftop is perfect for people watching. The hostess was drinking a mimosa, that should have been the sign to leave immediately... but we had two kiddos and were all starving. Ordered a Rueben, Mac and cheese and another dish. The sandwich was burnt and dry, Mac was okay and the other dish tasted like primarily soy sauce. My biggest issue was the bathroom, hard to find, no way to lock the door (?!!!), no toilet paper or paper towels and it took me ten minutes to find the one with a changing table, I had to ask an employee. Swung by for a work event and received great service from the Alexandria beer garden. Parked on the street nearby and occupied the left side of the restaurant, away from the bar.
