Our Tuesday tradition when I'm visiting is to stop in at the bar for prime rib Tuesday. It's a deal at $20 and the right amount of prime rib, mashed potato and vegetable. Last night we easily found a seat at the bar. They have a great beer selection though the wine selection is a bit limited. We ordered a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon. We ordered the prime rib medium rare and it came out perfectly. It came with a scoop of mashed potatoes, broccoli, au jus and creamy horseradish, enough for a good size meal. We ordered a side of bread which was more like very crispy toast which was ok. They have a daily happy hour and food specials that always sound great but so far we've stuck to Tuesday nights which is a great deal, consistently good and always hits the spot. read more

How did I not find this place sooner?! From brunch to dinner, the Light Horse does everything in a perfectly cozy neighborhood way. In one week, I came here three times because it's really just THAT good. On my first visit, a friend and I sat at the bar and enjoyed specialty cocktails and dinner. On my second trip for weekend brunch, two couples enjoyed cocktails, baked brie with pecans and cranberries, and delicious breakfast favorites. And on the most recent visit, my girlfriends and I checked out the upstairs, which is huge and warm, perfect for enjoying truffle-fry appetizers and dinner. Did I mention that the service here is great? Between Cassie, who's literally working both upstairs and downstairs, to Justin who's single-handedly juggling the brunch crowd as host, bartender, and server, everyone is working their tushies off. Can't say enough good things about this place. Oh, and military discount Mondays?? Say no more. Apparently, they also host karaoke nights, so I'll definitely be a regular going into 2026. read more

Great spot in old town Alexandria! A friend and I visited during restaurant week. It was a nice day, so we sat outside. I sipped on my sparkling rose as I enjoyed the nice views of king street. My friend ended up ordering from the regular menu but I wanted to take advantage of the restaurant week full course option! The 3-course meal came with an appetizer, main entree, and dessert. For my appetizer I ordered the Cajun crab dip, which was good! It was very creamy, but I can't say it's distinct from other crab dips. For my entree I ordered the rigatoni pasta. I guess I was just in a creamy mode that day, but I loved the shrimp and chicken inside. It definitely added more flavor to the dish. And of course I went with the cheesecake for my dessert. One of my friends suggested we meet up here for happy hour. I'm not familiar with this area so I was open to his recommendations. I think it was a good choice. It's in a busy area so parking is tight but not impossible. We must have arrived at the right time because it got packed super quick. we sat at the bar on the first floor. We walked into this place, not really knowing what to expect. Folks had told us about this other bar down the street a bit.. it had a private event so we went walking and saw this one. Decided to check it out. It's a "Buffalo" bar, in that they show Bills games. But they didn't have the buffalo foods so, little disappointed there. The foods they did have, were good though, the bar service was good, price was good. They do a trivia / Karaoke thing upstairs. That was actually quite fun, the 1st portion is music trivia that you use a QR code to join in. So your scoring and time to answer is displayed on the screens around the bar. After that is Karaoke. We stopped by on a Friday night and had a great time! I think our bartender was Chris, and he was really great! I didn't have any particular drinks in mind that I wanted, so the great bartender that he is, he asked me a couple questions and made me a drink that he thought I might like! He was right; I did enjoy my drink! A friend and I also ordered sweet potato fries to share; this was absolutely the move! The drinks and the snacks are fire! The vibes were quite chill! The staff were actually quite vigilant about spotting red flag behaviors without feeling so overbearing; I really appreciated that, especially as the night went on and patrons are drinking more and more. There are two floors where you can hang out. The upstairs has a handful of games with live entertainment and a bar. I really loved stopping by here ! I came for trivia night with a party of 6 people total ; they have trivia every Wednesday upstairs. I ordered the crab cake sandwich with jalapeños and tomato added. It came with the option of French fries , sweet potato fries, or a salad. With the option of adding a soup as a side for an additional $2. I opted for the regular fries. When I got my crab cake it was so tasty!! I devoured it IMMEDIATELY because it was 9 pm and I haven't eaten in the last 9 hours lol. Besides the taste, it was certainly 70% filler . But honestly not mad because I paid $20, so, you get what you pay for. It's no jumbo lump crab cake but it's still tasty ! The fries were crispy and delicious. We went to Light Horse for restaurant week and was pleasantly surprised with the food! The stuffed mushrooms were filled with crab and the hush puppies had a yummy sauce on top. Had to work a night shift, some my husband came up to old town to have dinner with me, so I randomly chose The Light Horse, it was close to work, so why not give it a shot? Sometimes in life, you have to reevaluate choices. The choice I had to reevaluate, was what the heck took me so long to eat here? They promptly came to ask what we wanted to drink and gave us menus, literally took me seconds to choose what I wanted, as well as my husband . I ordered The Hamburger it is- Shortrib and Chuck, Cheddar Cheese, Garlic Pickles, Lettuce, Tomato and Red Onion, Served on Brioche Bun. Sweet potato fries on the side -AAAAAmazing. I came around 3pm Thursday afternoon and was pleasant to see their fair prices for happy hour for the food and drinks. The employees that greeted me were happy and approached me appropriately for the time of day and the level of "busy-ness". I didn't feel awkward or pressured. There was no banging over my head when deciding what to order and no "are you ready? Are you ready? Are you ready?". The decoration inside the place was actually quite nice for a building that is oh so old! I really enjoy the presentation and it makes me feel like this is a nicer "American" bar to drink at. They did great, even with the larger group. Drinks stayed full and staff was very attentive. Now food. We all enjoyed our meals. But as for the wifey and I. I had the Grilled Cheese Cheeseburger - yum. Perfect as ordered. The wifey had the Brisket Grilled Cheese and tells me it was outstanding. Also perfectly cooked. We were debating---should we give them 3 or 4 stars. The more I thought about, I think they are a 4 star place. The day we ate here, we had gone to Old Town Alexandria. Before going, I came up with a list of restaurants that were either on King Street or a block or less off King. Since my husband has knee issues, it's easier for him to walk short distances. He picked The Light Horse in part due to its location. Also, he saw that they had fish and chips on the menu. We were here at 5 p.m. on a Wednesday. At that time of day, the place only had a few customers plus we figured out that if you arrive for an early meal, you don't get seated upstairs. The second floor serves as a sports bar and music and karaoke venue. The Light Horse is also an "Official Bills backer bar". So, if you are a Bills fan, this is a spot to see the games. We were greeted by the bartender who came out from behind the bar and told us to pick any spot to sit. We chose a high top table in a corner. He gave us menus. For drinks, we both got the same mocktail "The Rockin Chair". It consists of: "Ritual non-alcoholic whiskey, iced mango tea, lemon and orange infused honey". (They do offer up an alcoholic version of this drink. It's called "The Front Porch.") We both thought it was okay---not very sweet but refreshing. We then decided on an appetizer and chose "Crab deviled eggs" which consist of: "Our take on a classic served with crab and bacon dust". Our server, who was friendly and efficient, asked if we wanted the "happy hour" portion or the regular one. I asked what was the difference. She said the "happy hour" one was cheaper (by $3). So, that's what we chose. It is a small portion, only consisting of 3 medium-sized egg halves. A tiny piece of crab meat was put in the egg, as well as a miniscule piece of bacon. The "bacon dust" was bacon that was ground into a powder. They were okay but if you've had the deviled eggs at Jackson's in RTC, Light Horse's can't hold a candle to Jackson's. For my entree, I chose "Caprese Salad" which consists of: "With mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, grilled Allen Brothers chicken (which is a boneless chicken breast) , mozzarella, sliced avocados, balsamic vinaigrette". This was a good dish. The chicken was freshly grilled. Some of it was properly cooked while some was a bit overdone. I did like the flavor that grilling it brings. The balsamic vinaigrette brought a bit of sweetness to this dish, which I liked. My husband liked his fish and chips which consists of: "Traditional Atlantic cod and hand cut French fries". It comes with some ketchup and malt vinegar. He said the fish was good but the fries weren't as hot as they should have been. The cook was the one who brought the food to our table. He was polite and friendly. One reason I gave 4 stars was that we liked the ambiance and feel of the place. At that hour of the day, it had a laid back and welcoming feel to it. No one ever made us feel rushed. Dinner was $78 + change before the tip. We both say we would definitely return at some point. read more

My experience started out a little rocky due to the rude hostess but after a quick conversation with the manager, Kenny, the rude hostess was easily forgotten. The restaurant was nice and the crowd wasn't too loud. It was a diverse group of patrons and everyone appeared to be having a good time. The food didn't disappoint at all. I had the crab dip (the bread was ah-mazing!) and the pan seared salmon and enjoyed every bite. I ordered two drinks; the watermelon thing (good but wasn't my speed) and the other I forgot the name of but have a photo of. I wasn't fond of the dessert at all. It was supposed to be peach cobbler-ish... I honestly forget which fruit it was but there was no pie crust thickness so it was more like fruit soup with ice cream. Came here yesterday around six p m. I was quickly seated, as it wasn't very full. The place has a rustic minimalist vibe to it, like you're attending a shabby-chic barn wedding. Aye Papi cocktail - If you're a fan of heat, this does not disappoint. Taste like a pineapple or jalapeno margarita. I wanted to try their old-fashioned, but upon learning that they then there's is pre-made, I passed. Crab Deviled eggs - hard pass. Couldn't taste any crab, but that wasn't the worst part: the egg itself was rubbery. It didn't have the consistency you'd expect in a hard-boiled egg white. It was weird and unappealing to me. Elite hushpuppies - not bad. The accompanying cheese and sauce, that was drizzled on top, really wasn't enough to add any value to it. It would have been nice if they had added more. Wow. Nice & open light and breezy. I can actually see in there. Lots of staff and great bartenders and the food is amazing. They have a prime rib special on Thursdays or maybe Tuesday for $20. It looked really good. I got the braised beef in wine sauce. And they have a special brunch menu on the weekends. I got the prime rib eggs Benedict. Very tasty. My friends and I came here for restaurant week and had a great experience! The restaurant week menu was shot! I started with the margarita bruschetta. Definitely well flavored and crushed it. Next I got the grilled flank steak and it was made to order. Brussel sprouts were also a hit! Last I had the brownie sundae! It was good but I wish it was warmed up. I didn't ask though so can't hold that against them. The service was great! We sat at the bar and got great service. I love the placements you get when you order food from the bar. I forget what drink I got but I was satisfied with that as well. I would definitely visit here again. Parking is like street parking. The food was ok. I recommend the wings, we got maple siracha which was good but could've used more siracha. The fries are good with their house made ranch.
