Relaxed, good fade and beard trim, Rafael is a cool guy and easy to talk to. A nice, chill neighborhood barber shop. Tools are clean and while you can get a blade shave, I appreciate that they work with you if you have sensitive skin, getting the same clean neck with clippers only. And the price is right. I went here on a whim because I took my car to the shop nearby to get work done and had 2 hours to kill. I needed a shave because I didn't have time in the morning so, figured I'd get a cut as well. I was there at 9:45 waited til like 10am guy pulls up and opens the shop. I wait for him to get ready and go in. He was a nice guy, I think he was the owner. I told him I want a high and tight skin fade and a shave. Also that I didn't want to cut the top of my hair I'm trying to grow it out. As you can see, the fade work is pretty good. I didn't really ask him for a line up, and I didn't remind him because I thought it would happen with the shave. I like a sharp manufactured looking line up, like OBVIOUS that I got a fresh cut. He lined it up with the machine a bit and made it natural looking which isn't bad and I didn't ask him to go any further, I'm sure if I did he would have. He started cutting the top of my hair and I let him go a little bit just to make it healthy then I stopped him before he went any further. He started the shave off right. He put some pre shave oil gel on, then the hot towel, let it sit. He shaved with the grain for a little and then started going against in some areas and it kind of pulled my hair a bit, didn't cut me though and it's smooth as hell. He re lathered and went over my face about 3 times. He put the lotion let it sit shaved some problem areas, put a cold towel, and then put the after shave and then powdered. He charged $30 I gave him $5 as a tip. So pretty fair price in general. Bronx and deep Brooklyn, you may get $5 cheaper but you never know out there. Only suggestions I have is to list the prices on the outside window and online/yelp, more photos and change the opening time to 10am. read more

Don't go here despite the good reviews. I went in last night for a simple haircut. I told the barber, his name was raphael I believe, specifically to not cut my hair too short and I just needed it cleaned up. After trimming the sides he proceeded to cut my hair short, and when i told him i didn't want it short and my previous barber used to cut it differently he retorted with "well i am not the other guy and i am going to cut it my way" At that point I was already furious and was waiting for the guy to finish so I could leave. I am very dissatisfied with my haircut and pissed the guy couldn't follow simple directions. Will not be returning to this place and would advise anybody else to as well. read more

For the love of God, do not ask for Raphael. He messed up my hair to no end. I'm glad I don't have to worry once I grow my hair back but this guy has no clue on customer service. For one, he dropped the hair comb he was using, dipped half of it into the cleaning jar and then used it on my scalp. As if half, the comb dropped defying the laws of gravity. Two, his breath was like a mini-gas chamber. I almost felt like my face was going through a tiny holocaust. Three, he coughed on my face twice. Fourth, he cut half of my hair. If you're getting a curtain cut, you don't cut one portion of the scalp. Everything has to be even. If you have to wait for the main guy then by all means do so. If you are the owner, fire Raphael or get him some toothpaste and a lifetime supply of Scope mouthwash and common sense. read more

By far, the WORST haircut experience I had (I only take comfort in knowing it wasn't physically painful). I went in with high hopes, having read the reviews here. The only barber available on Tuesday morning was a female barber with broken English. Any question I asked her, she answered with attitude but still managed to trail off. The only conversation she made was complaining that my (4-inch) hair was so long (obviously that's why I was getting a haircut). I thought I gave her enough instructions "short, but no buzz -- they usually use a 2 or 3 clipper", and she decided this meant I wanted her to use scissors the whole time. Fine, whatever -- it just made it take way too long. At the end, I asked her if she was going to use clippers, she said I'd already taken a half hour of her time and she rushed me out so she could get to the ONE other customer who'd just walked in. To make matters worse, she also had a wet cough and was coughing all around me (using hand sanitizer only once). I only noticed once she started cutting my hair. Oh, and I'm pretty sure she overcharged me. Ugh, never again! They'd have to pay me to come back there. read more

I usually get my hair cut down at Astor Barber in Manhattan, and frankly this experience was better. Raphael's shop is simple and unpretentious. He has a fun personality and he actually listens to you. Best of all, Raphael is good at what he does, takes his time and takes pride in his work. What more could you ask for? Since I moved to Astoria a few years ago, I've been hunting for the right barber shop. I'm so particular when it comes to my hair but let me say this... Raf is the best barber in Astoria. Bar none. I've tried a lot of shops, But Broadway has the right mix of atmosphere, style, price and quality. I get a cut and a beard trim by a skilled barber in a relaxing, no frills environment where we can have a conversation, and I can actually describe what I want and ask questions without having to yell over the music. The price was beyond reasonable because for someone as good as him he could easily charge twice as much... very easily. My boyfriend went here for his haircuts maybe 5 times. The main guy, Rafael, is really good.. My boyfriend was always super happy with his hair. It looked great. He cut it the 4 out of 5 times we went there. Then the last time we went, Rafael wasn't there.. Instead there was a Hispanic guy I never saw before. First, when my boyfriend told him what he wanted and said what number clippers to use the guy was like "are you sure..?" So my boyfriend said "oh why, you think that's too short?" The guy gave some vague answer and so my bf told him to use scissors. The guy then proceeds to use clippers. It thankfully turned out ok but that's pretty annoying. The haircut itself is mediocre, too long in back so he's gonna have to go back again soon. Doesn't look nearly as nice as when Rafael cut it. Then here's the kicker: when paying my bf leaves the guy a $1 tip (haircut is $10). He obviously wasn't happy with it and that's still a decent tip for something you're not happy with. The guy then complains about it and says "this isn't tea or coffee that a $1 tip will be ok"..... Ummm yeah we're not coming back here. It's no longer convenient for us anyway since we moved and we don't want to risk having to see this guy again. Bottom line: if Rafael is around, go here. It's a good value for your money. If the other guy is there, RUN!! That's why I'm giving 3 out of 5 stars. Mostly good, but this last experience wasn't fun. read more

You're never too old to learn (or re-learn) a lesson. An empty barber shop is never a good sign. Men like hanging out at barber shops. Hipsters, homies, old dudes, whoever; men like hanging out with other men at barber shops. So empty is definitely a bad sign. But... Out of sheer laziness, about a month ago, I walked into this place around the corner from my apartment thinking, "How bad could it be? There's only so many ways to screw up a basic short haircut." I didn't want to walk all the way down Broadway to Andreas', fat lazy f@#k that I am so I took the calculated risk. Raphael cut my hair and to his credit he did a mediocre job. Meaning it wasn't a great haircut or even a good haircut but he didn't butcher me either (like the guy just before me whose gf was so pissed at what Raphael did to him they actually argued about whether or not to leave a tip. Bad sign, but Andreas' is, like, 13 blocks away as the crow flies and I am a fat lazy f@#k.) So off I went with my middle-of-the-road, basic haircut. Fast forward to today. I've been procrastinating for at least a week to get a trim and as a result I'm way past due so I figure, f-it I'll just resign myself to mediocre. I go in and Raphael isn't there, there's one guy waiting for him and the 2nd chair barber (an even weirder, more maladjusted freak than the other reviews let on) is on the phone in the middle of the doorway staring at me as he doesn't move to let me in the store. He tells me Raphael isn't there. I reply that I can see that, I'll wait. He then asks if I'll wait. I repeat, yes. Raphael shows up a few minutes later and starts to cut the other guy. The freak again asks if I'm going to wait because he wants a cigarette. I tell him to have two. He and Raphael exchange words in Russian and share a laugh before he exits. I'm sitting there actually waiting for a shitty haircut from a rude a-hole with an otherwise empty barber shop when it occurs to me to get my fat lazy ass up and go to Andreas'. For an extra $2 (ok, $7.50 really cuz I took the bus...I can't stress enough how fat and lazy I am) I got a great haircut from a friendly guy at a shop filled with 4 busy barbers and a bunch of dudes hanging out watching the baseball game. Hands down, worst cut ever. Came here once before and the cut was okay, decided to give the shop the benefit of the doubt and tried a second time. Worst decision of my life. Got a cut before the holidays, but ended up wearing a hat since thanksgiving until my hair grew out again. The guy who cut my hair paid no attention and kept clipping away, clipping until the buzzer dug into my ear. Besides a poor cut, the guy who calls himself "big raphael" had some terrible breath. I was barely able to contain myself as it was uncomfortable during the entire cut. Will never recommend this shop to anyone. Please stay away.
