Honestly, the food is very tasty and we were pleased with our selection. We used to go to one of the other places in town and an employee of mine told me that this one was better. They don't have quite the selection of the other place, but the food is very good. My only criticism would be. There was not much in the way of carrots left by the time we got there on Sunday and they put the guacamole on the chips instead of giving it to you on the side. So the chips got sort of soggy by the time we got home. I will definitely have the shrimp tacos again. It was delicious and my son was very pleased with his Carne Asada tacos with guacamole. We also had a Carne Asada quesadilla and the famous chips with the guacamole already on them. Everything tasted very good. The inside is not anything fancy, but there's a few seats and there's a salsa bar with really nice salsa, limes, and if you can go when they are not out of carrots, there are carrots. I wished that their pickled carrots had more garlic in them. So I guess that would be my second criticism or more of a suggestion. Absolutely awful service! We spent over 50 bucks to receive our food and right after deal with the lady mopping with bleach shoulder to shoulder with us trying to eat. There is absolutely no reason to mop with bleach in such a small space with young children and families trying to eat. Everyone lost their appetite and food was wasted. Will NEVER go here again. Going through Payson and had a bean and cheese burrito craving....it wouldn't go away....I needed a fix. I'd liken Alfonso's to Los Favritos, but a tad bit better. Is it the best out there? Not at all...but it solves problems. The burrito was big, tasted good and satisfied my craving. The chicken taco was a toss in...it was ok. Both lived up to the expectations I had and I walked away full and happy. Plenty of seating outside...as you can see in the pics, it's a small place but enough seating for passers by. Being from San Diego, I'm very qualified at judging decent and crap Mexican fast food. We have plenty of crap Mexican food places here in San Diego, but also some stellar ones. So if you look at all my reviews you'll see that it's rare for me to find a dive-y Mexican food restaurant I don't like. Normally all my reviews are 5 stars even though the restaurants are a little grimy. However I did not like this restaurant! The reason is that the food just didn't taste good to me. The carnitas was yummy but was like 50% inedible fat in my tacos. No bueno! Also, I pretty much never meet a bean and cheese burrito that I don't devour - but here I left mine half uneaten which NEVER happens (and I live in Southern California where we have tons of Mexican food restaurants so I know what good beans taste like!). The flavor was just weird and there was also barely any cheese in my burrito. Instead of being called a bean & cheese burrito it should have been called a 'murky tasting beans only burrito'. Also it was DRIPPING in grease - I know these can be greasy but this one was swimming with grease so much I had to get extra napkins and get another plastic bag to contain all the grease. We also got a bacon, egg, potato breakfast burrito but it was really bland - even with the salsa. Overall, I was super disappointed with this restaurant despite all the good reviews. For one of our last meals in Arizona, we had to get Mexican food. So after hiking around the Tonto National Forest, we drove through Payson and found Alfonso's Mexican Food, which satisfied our craving. Located along a major road, Alfonso's Mexican Food was easy to find as it's located in a small business strip with plenty of parking. There were a few tables outside, and the dining space inside is on the smaller side. However, we visited on a weekday in the late afternoon and the place wasn't busy. You order and pay at the counter and they will deliver your food to you at your table. It's a casual spot. There was a lot to choose from at Alfonso's Mexican Food, and it helped there were photos of the items posted on the wall. My partner and I shared the carnitas plate, the machaca plate, beef nachos and a side of green chile. Yes, we had hella leftovers! The food was delicious. Everything we ordered was definitely satisfying and filling, and I liked that there was a salsa bar here that we could help ourselves to. All of the meat was tender, the toppings were loaded and the tortillas were warm and fresh. It also made for yummy leftovers! If you're in Payson and have a desire for some classic Mexican dishes in a casual setting then Alfonso's Mexican Food has your back. OK, this place is totally ridiculous and I mean that in the best possible way They used to have a little place here in Phoenix, but now just the Payson store. It's probably the best little Mexican hole in the wall. I have eaten at in a long long time, we stopped in for breakfast on our way to a cabin in Strawberry Arizona and had breakfast burritos again they were ridiculous. They were so freaking good. I'm a big guy and a big eater and I couldn't finish my breakfast burrito ..They were so big and stuffed to the max with meat and eggs and all kinds of other great stuff. The salsa bar was spotless. The salsa was amazing, but the star was the Horchata best Horchata I've had in as long as I can remember this is a definite place to check out if you're heading through Payson and it's hard to find it's way back in the corner, but it's worth looking for . read more

I know this took me awhile to write this review, but better late than never. Back in November of 2023 my son and I arranged to have Alfonso's cater the food for my son's wedding reception. We met with "Israel" to plan the menu and make the delivery arrangements. The wedding was held at a home located behind Kohl's Ranch approximately 17 miles outside of Payson. Israel and his team delivered the delicious food hot, fresh and on time! There was also plenty of food for everyone to enjoy! I've had the chile relleno burrito on multiple occasions and it was absolutely delicious. My husband has gotten a couple of other things and no complaints. Was in Payson and looking for something to eat that didn't break the bank and wasn't a fast food hamburger place, and thanks to Yelp we found Alfonso Mexican Food, so that's where we were headed to. After checking out the menu, I went with the #22, a carne asada burrito with beans & rice, I also added to the order 2 of the mini street tacos, again carne asada. The street tacos were meat, onions and cilantro on 2 small corn tortillas and were pretty tasty. The carne asada burrito had meat, guac and onions, and it too was pretty tasty as well. They have a nice selection of salsas to pick from too, even some carrots & jalapenos. If driving through and looking for a cheap fast place to stop, give Alfonso a try! read more
