Been a couple of years, time to update review. We visit in laws monthly, and bring lunch when we do. They can't get out much these days. For our Christmas meal we picked up a large variety of goodies here, and the folks special requests. MIL wanted a steak. I explained to the wonderful lady taking our order, and they prepared a delicious, tender t bone. Everyone highly enjoyed their meals, as always. Wish this place was down in the flatlands where we live, we'd be regulars. We'll continue to be customers here and want to thank the owners/ staff for their kindness and great service. read more

Super nice people, and I really appreciated that they were open on New Year's Eve. As for the food, I can't say it was one of my favorites--it was just okay. The ground beef didn't have much flavor. The restaurant has a pretty typical Mexican food spot vibe overall. read more

Our new favorite restaurant when visiting Payson! The hotel front desk recommended this place and we are so glad that they did!! We went there Friday and then again on Sunday!!The atmosphere is festive, colorful and clean. The service is friendly, prompt and helpful. The food. Oh wow. We all said that this had some of the best Mexican food that we had had. The shrimp enchilada was filled with shrimp and flavor, the tamales were filled with so much perfectly cooked shredded beef and the tostadas were overflowing with toppings. All of our portions were huge. And the Margarita Flight was such a fun way to try out their different flavors. And they do not skimp on the tequila!! We cannot wait to go back!! read more

The food is always excellent here but over the past few times we've visited there, there have been issues with being over charged or not getting entire order. I ordered the cheese enchilada with rice and beans off senior menu and just got the enchilada. We let the waiter know but we were already finished with the meal when he brought the rice and beans. Also the people we go there with have been overcharged several times and even after the bill was corrected was not given back the entire amount owed. These things happen every single time. It's just too strange. Always check your bill. read more

We have been dining here for years and been happy. The last two times we had lunch here, we were very disappointed. Todays lunch I got the fajaita salad. The beef was very tough, and the fried tortilla shell the salad came in was so hard and tough it was not edible. I took a quesidilla home to a family member. It got tossed in the trash. Overcooked and very greasy, and again the beef was tough I feel like I threw $33.00 into the trash. Not happy campers. read more

If you judge "favorite restaurant" as the restaurant to which you want to AND do go the most often, then La Sierra is far and away my favorite restaurant in Payson. The space is nice, if a bit kitchy and dated, and the service is usually good, although you sometimes have to stand up for yourself like you're at an authentic Chinese restaurant. All of the staff there are really nice and kind, though. The bottomless chips and salsa are good, although the salsa is a bit plain. Order it piquante (spicy) and I swear they just throw some hot sauce into it. One disappointment is the lack of agua frescas (Jamaica, horchata), but the selection of alcoholic beverages is sufficient. I'm a HUGE fan of green chili, and you can get it several different ways; Green Chili Bowl, Green Chili Plate, Chili Verde Chimichanga, Huevos Rancheros. I typically get the Huevos Rancheros with my huevos over easy. I'm also a big fan of the Campechana, which is a cold cocktail of shrimp and octopus with onions, tomatoes and cilantro. It's very refreshing on a hot day. If you enjoy picking crispy chunks off of a scored, deep fried fish, the Pescado La Sierra is fun and tasty. Finally, don't pass up the appetizer of Hongos Al Ajo (mushrooms with garlic) but you MUST Add Octopus. Trust me. Now that I've gotten myself all worked up, I guess I'll be heading over to La Sierra for dinner. read more

We had a last minute group of 10 and they were incredibly accommodating and kind. The restaurant was packed and we had no reservation. There were several other large groups (holiday season) but the service and food were great. The kitchen was a little backed up but all of our food came out together and was delicious. Our server was awesome. If you're having a birthday, this is a very fun place to go. The birthday churro surprise was a blast and delicious. We will be back. read more

Stopped in for a second time for lunch while on the road. Hoping it would be better than our first experience. Wrong. Hostess was a snarlty unfriendly employee who should be fired. Finally seated in the back of the restaurant (just as our first encounter). Finally a server asked about drinks and was friendly and prompt. From there all down hill. A couple who was seated after us was waited on and got their food before our order was taken. Finally asked for a server and grudgingly a man appeared, very unfriendly and short. Finally got our order which was cold and only fair. Will NEVER return to this restaurant. Far too many choices that appreciate the business. We used to come to La Sierra whenever visiting Payson AZ. I always ordered steak fajitas or beef fajitas as they call it and husband ordered chili Rieno (sorry for the spelling). Food used to be very delicious, service was great, the place always packed with people. Last year exactly this month they served my fajitas under cooked, we asked them to send it back and grill it a bit more and also the vegetables were not grilled enough, they brought it back charred and dry almost burnt and they gave us an attitude although we were really nice about it, that we didn't expect. Last night we got to Payson oh maybe 7:45pm, after a long drive from CA, tired and hungry and thought to give it a "one more try". They seated us quickly but almost 15 minutes went by and nobody came to take a drink order or even to acknowledge we were there. I went and asked for a waiter and btw there were maybe 4 tables occupied. They finally brought salsa and chips and drinks. We ordered food but it wasn't the same as expected so we blamed ourselves to give it a "one more try". Lesson learned! The waitress didn't even ask us if we like the food or not, the price had doubled but the quality had gone down and the vegetables were almost all burnt and it was bitter. The rice/bean plate always had a lot of cheese melted on the beans had just few drops of cheese. Very disappointing. To top all that, one of the waitresses started to use the electric vacuum and didn't let us have some peace either when in fact earlier she was using non electrical broom to clean up under the tables. My husband told them we were not happy and they didn't care. That was our experience and will not go there anymore. read more

First time here, had the shredded beef chimmichanga served with rice and beans. Guacamole and sour cream were on the side. Good flavors, poured the salsa in with the mix to kick up the heat. Place is clean, prices are reasonable. Great atmosphere, service was very good. The menu is very large. I would dine here again. Next on my list are the burros or enchiladas. Everything was wonderful but the Carne Asada was amazing! You could taste the charcoal flavor in every bite.

+Excellent salsa. Strong for vegetarian options and my veggie chimichanga was delicious. Friendly and attentive wait staff. Fun, bright interior. Comfortable air conditioning, which is key here in AZ summers. Seems like a favorite of the locals. Clean bathroom. I'd stop here again! -Audio ambiance: the kitchen opens up to the front third of the restaurant, which makes it a little loud, and I'd like a little music. The former can be remedied by requesting a seat further back in the restaurant. I'd also like to see more south of the border nonalcoholic drink options like Jarritos and horchata, but maybe those aren't big with Payson locals. read more

I had the Menudo as you can see and that was absolutely disgusting to find the entire pigs foot /hoof inside. I have had this time and time again from other places and this had never been inside. And I had the Carne Assad burrito and that was the squishiest burrito 80% avocado 20% carne asada.. and just a bit bland. The only thing that was okay was the ceviche tostada. Sorry I personally wouldn't recommend. read more

This place was amazing!!! We picked this spot over the other Mexican Restaurants in the area because it had a vegetarian menu. Most places don't even have a vegetarian options, let alone a full menu. My brother got a healthy portion, chocked full of good veggies, instead of some glorified lettuce. For the rest of us, everything was absolutely delicious! Our waitress was sweet, the atmosphere is adorable, and we were served promptly with everything fresh and hot. We got the spinach dip, (which is basically the best Queso Blanco ever! chimichangas, a combination plate, and some bean dip. Everything was fantastic! Highly recommend you give them a shot! read more
