So, we were enjoying smoking shisha at a cafe and realized we needed to have a hookah pipe of our own. Soon after we left, we stumbled upon Alfrha, a Mediterannean grocery with the pipes gleaming like a beacon in the windows. The staff there was incredibly friendly and smiley and kind -- explaining how to use our pipe and saying that if we had any questions, we could call them up 24 hours a day. Their awning clearly says ALFRHA, yet when you search for their business on the internet, you end up finding Alfarha Corp. But I digress. This small little hole in the wall market is where I get my bulgurs (type of wheat). The bulgur packages I find in other markets have darker color and isn't as clean I find it, and the smell is also very pungent. But the ones they sell in ALFRHA are clean and yellow and when you cook them they are much softer and odorless. Every time I pass by the shop my eyes would catch the giant piles of Arabic housewares stacked up against their front window. And it has always triggered my curiosity. The arrangements would include Shisha bottles, tagine plates and boxes with Arabic labels that I cannot recognize. The staff members are always friendly and never afraid to give you a smile. In fact, that's their motto didn't you know? The first thing you'd get to see upon entering their shop is a giant hand-painted sign that says 'Smile, it's free!'. I wanted to buy a hookah pipe and Yelped a shisha store in Astoria and stumbled upon Alfrha. I didn't know much about owning a shisha and I def needed more help and after reading the other reviews, I knew this must be the store to check out first. As soon as I walked into the store, I was greeted with a smile. I asked different questions about owning a shisha, flavors, coal etc and the staff had no issues with all the questions. He told me to give them a buzz if i needed any help with the shisha. They have a lot of different types of flavors and coals at Alfrha which are quite difficult to find in Queens. i am not much of a hookah guy but sometimes my boys like to get together and puff away which means i gotta get some shisha, charcoal and maybe a new hookah while visiting alfrha grocery in astoria on steinway. besides a wide selection of hookah pipes , flavor shisha, coals, and hookah acessories its still a grocery store that carries a variety of middle eastern /north african goods from tuna, beans, couscous, pita breads, sweets, dates, spices, etc. place is small but shelves are well packed with almost everything you need including the super hot harissa from tunisia. i got my two boxes of shisha ,one apple flavor , one mint flavor and one tube of the hot spicey red paste and now its time to go home and get the hookah party started . one last thing i should mention , please check the expiration date on products as some were expired and thats not good. read more

This is an Egyptian bodega type spot that I usually always come to for my hookah/shisha supplies. They have reasonable prices (probably the better of all the joints on Steinway Street). I bought my Khalil Mamoon from here. The heavyset guy who I think owns the place is friendly and helpful. Everyone else in there doesn't have much personality. They carry full hookahs, bases, pipes, rubber gaskets for the hookahs and heads, separately if you need too. They also have the actual hookah flavors (grape mint, lemon mint, etc) and coals. I would definitely come here if you're looking to buy a hookah/shisha rig, you're going to pay double for a shittier product in the tourist areas like St Marks or the village. This is also my go-to spot for dates. I love medjoul dates and I can get them here for $5/lb or a big box (over 2 lbs) for $25, the cheapest I've seen so far between Queens and Manhattan (if you know of a better spot let me know!). read more

Alfarha is the best spot in which i can find everything im looking for my hookah. The guys who are working their are very friendly and the owner is very kind. Everytime i get my hookah flavors from them, they give me the best staff with the best prices. Open 24hr, whatever u are looking for u can find it, hookahs, flavors, and everything belongs to shisha. I was shocked to say the least when I found out this place served food. It looks like a small convenient store and the entire display windows are hookahs. Who would have thought this place would have pretty good food. I got the chicken shawarma for $6 . Thought it would just be a sandwich but it also came with a small portion of fries and veggies on the side. A steal for the price and the food was very good. Great people that work here. Many times I would just hang out and speak with the staff after I bought my items already. Good selection of shisha tobaccos and equipment for your hookah pipes. Always full on pita, dates, and sunflower seeds. Decent sandwiches made to order if you are hungry. Great selection of teas and coffees. Have most necessities for any kitchen. If you just need a calling card, smokes, or something quick to eat/drink, stop in and give your support to these guys.
