This place came recommended by a true foodie! Just a few short blocks from the 4 train is this busy shop. The wrapped line didn't worry me since I could see it moving quickly, and it made me excited to try this for myself. While in line I decided on the curry goat roti-- now here's something to note: I ordered it buss up and thought it meant the fixins' but it actually creates a more deconstructed roti than what one would normally find! I also ordered the eggplant fritter baiganee and that was also delicious! I did accept the pepper sauce and tamarind drizzle on both. I think the next time I come, I'll be on an emptied stomach- I loved it all and ate as much as I could. To wash it down, I tried their homemade orange and grapefruit juice which was refreshing! Luckily we were able to sit in the modified lounge style seating they offer. A long bench with individual tables and chairs that break up the seating for multiple parties. The music! It was so hard to sit still with amazing music blasting through the room. Would absolutely recommend and plan to return on my next visit.

I passed by this spot multiple times and finally decided to give it a try. I got the doubles and added the pepper sauce. For only curry chickpeas and roti this was really good. For $2 each it's pretty filling. The service was not bad and the restaurant is pretty spacious. I would've never thought that chickpeas would taste so good like this. If you want the extra kick add the pepper sauce. I had the doubles 2 days in a row.

My mouth is watering just thinking about the chicken roti that I got from Ali's. When I walked up to the shop someone was blasting Caribbean and R&B mixes and was singing at the top of their lungs. Not gonna lie the mix was fire and I'm kind of sad I didn't ask for a copy. When I walked into Ali's it smelled sooo good... and they thankfully still had a lot of options left. I got their chicken roti with potatoes. They definitely don't skimp on the portion sizes so I was able to eat this as two meals. I also got a banana cola and mmhm mhhm, I could eat here everyday. I can't wait to go back and try their veggie roti. Note: They accept cards however they up charge you to run your card (flat rate of $1) so bring cash if you can.

I had a music video shoot call time of 6:00. Got there, but decided to wait until 7:45 since it is a night shoot. I asked for a good place to get some food. I was directed to Ali's First thing I do is look at the cleanliness of a business. As soon as I walk into a place, I check out how clean it is and I always look at where the food is at. The food was well presented and it wasn't sloppy and food all over the place. Everything look neat and clean. I also make a quick rundown of the workers. I look at their outfits. Are They wearing gloves and so on. The food was well presented and the staff answered questions. She even when it's far to ask if that what I chose looked good. It did. . The person in front of me ordered rice and chicken with macaroni pie on the side. When he got to the counter, the man didn't realize the macaroni pie was part of his order. He told him don't worry about it just put it in the bag. I thought that was super cool. I paid for my order and asked if he had any non-carbonated drinks because everything in the cooler look like soda. He gave me a drink for free from behind the counter. There's a fountain there. Again super cool. Especially as a first time patron, this is a wonderful memory I ordered pasta with curry chicken on top. It was good. Not very spicy and not very salty. A lot of times these places drown their food with salt. It tasted good and I left none. I got roti skin with it, because how can you eat this without roti skin of course. The roti skin was warm and soft all the way through. Every bite was a delight. I almost definitely hit this place up again when I'm in a neighborhood. It is now on my list!

Let me start by saying the line is long. Once you try some doubles or the Roti, you'll understand why. I elected for the Beef Roti and doubles, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. They do NOT skimp on the meat or Channa. The place is spacious and has great music in the background, so it makes you want to stick around. The only thing I would want to add to my food is more pepper sauce or Mango Amchar. I'll be back to try more items on the menu.

Shrimp roti. I cut it in half and saved half.

I ordered a shrimp roti and it was THE freshest I've ever had!! So good! There was a line in the shop that moved quickly. The servers were courteous and swift. This is a dine in restaurant but i took my food to go. The restaurant was spacious and clean. I can't wait to go back and order the roti again.

We started with naan bread and the Atithi special platter. We had the Tandoori Haryali Shrimp and Chicken Tiki and Garlic naan bread as well. For entrees we had the Chicken Korma, Shrimp Curry and Tandoori Chicken. You can order these dishes, mild, spicy and very spicy. Although we ordered mild for everything (mainly due to having a two year old), there were definitely hints of heat, which honestly was fantastic for me - I can only imagine what spicy would be. It was my mil's first time trying Indian food in this way and she enjoyed it all.

Bombay Grill is one of my favorite Indian restaurants in the city. The food is gently spiced and not greasy. The last time I checked, they had an excellent health department grade. It was a challenge to find that plus an affordable lunch special. One of my other favorite Indian restaurants has had several issues with the NYC health department. The Yelp app is very helpful - it lists the health department grade after the ratings. Bombay Grill also makes excellent curries. I prefer those over the usual chicken tikka masala - although that's always good. If you order lunch, the lunch box has more variety but less of the main course. So if you want just one main dish, it's better to go without a box lunch option and just choose a standard lunch deal.

We chose bar seating, which ended up being a bit of a tight squeeze facing the wall; not the most comfortable setup, but manageable for a short meal. To start, we had the pani puri, followed by the samosa chaat. The flavors were good, but the samosa chaat was a bit of a letdown. It wasn't served hot, and the samosa itself was soggy rather than crisp. That contrast in texture is really what makes the dish shine, so it felt like it may have sat a bit too long or was over-sauced. We also tried the vegetable pav, which was decent, and the cod, which was actually very good; nicely cooked with a flavorful sauce. I did find myself wishing we had an extra roti to soak up the rest. For drinks, I had the mango lassi, which I appreciated for not being overly sweet. Service was okay but could be more attentive. My water wasn't refilled after a couple of rounds, and we felt a bit rushed toward the end of the meal. We were given the check without being asked about dessert, which caught us off guard. We did ask afterward, but by then decided to go elsewhere. That said, the food overall is flavorful, and I can see why this place has appeal; especially if you're looking for something a little different in the neighborhood. Having met the owner before in Industry City, it's great to see her doing well in Carroll Gardens, and I wish the restaurant continued success.

Spoiler, we never made it to any of the other locations because we were so full. Jalsa provide fare from all over India and makes paneer in house. They have plenty of seating and can take care of large catering parties. As is customary, they have a Sunday lunch buffet. We came on a rainy Saturday afternoons and there weren't many patrons dining. We went with the masala chai, mango lassi, lamb kati roll, and a ghee masala dosa with gun powder, upon recommendation. -The masala chai was perfectly blended, with sugar on the side to sweeten to one's liking. -The mango lassi was really good, but a bit thicker than I'd like; good tartness. -Lamb kati roll was really good, larger than expected. The flavours were well balanced and the paratha had a good flake to it. There was A LOT of lamb inside. -The ghee masala dosa was the shining star; it must have been 2.5, if not 3 feet long. The edges were super crispy like a chip, and the masala potato pilling was delicious If I could do it all over again, I'd only eat here and not eat ahead of time, since this was enough food to fill a party of two (maybe add in a samosa or two). I'll definitely be coming back to try more fare.

The decor and vibe of this place is so vibrant and beautiful, it instantly puts you in a good mood. I came here for a solo dinner during restaurant week which was a pretty good deal. Most of the patrons seem like they were neighborhood locals which I love to see. I would say based on the flavors and the people dining here that this restaurant is more of a gentrified desi place than authentic. I found the flavors in most of the items I tried lacking. The fuchka prepared tableside is a nice touch, but again the marketing is geared more towards non-desi patrons. The fish fry was delicious and a good portion but more like a good British fish n chips cod filet than a desi fish fry with proper spices. Even the mustard served on the side was awfully bland with no spice whatsoever. While I can still appreciate the flavors, I will always be disappointed when an establishment trades authenticity to serve and coddle palettes that do not appreciate proper desi food. The lamb curry was very very good, and I specifically asked for it to be made spicy. Dining here felt like invading a curated space for non Indians, so I unapologetically ate the curry and rice with my hands to remind myself that yes, this is still our food even if it's muted. To the owners I say - do better and do not shy away from authentic flavors. This is afterall, New York freaking City.
