I have coming to Alibi for two years until recently the stylist butchered my hair. Having the same hairdresser for the last 2 years, I trusted that the trim he had offered when I came in was going to suit my fine long hair. Instead he chopped so deep into the front of my hair that it looks like a mullet. When I complained, he told me to contact him when in starts to grow in and the salon manager refused to offer me a color service to fix the fact that the front lower part of my front hair had now no color (cut away by Austin) and looked mousy instead of ombre. They did offer a refund of the service cost which seemed very inconsequential to the time and visual loss I suffered. I hate the cut. It took 2 years to get to a place that I like it and I would not trust any of the staff at Alibi again nor would I recommend them. read more

Mona at Alibi Salon in SoHo gave me the one haircut I walked out absolutely loving it. Let's start with the salon first. Great staff. Very friendly and inviting. They take your coat, you sit down in their big comfy black couches and just relax while waiting for your appointment. They even offer wine! That already puts them at the top of my list. The first step is a shampoo as usual and the shampoo-ers know how to work those kinks out right. Best 5 minute head massage while shampooing yet. And then you promptly meet your stylist, mine being Mona. Mona was recommended to me by a friend who is a patron of this salon. I'm glad I listened to her because Mona knows how to style hair just right. She makes sure that the cut will suit your face, personality, and hair type. For me, she gave me an amazing asymmetrical cut that is a bit funky but has a feminine touch to it. It was exactly what i had in mind. So again, Mona is AMAZING and highly recommended. The price for the cut is along the $90 range for a Master stylist like Mona, not including tip. It's pricey but you definitely get what you pay for. I live in Spain and haven't had a decent haircut for years - in fact I started cutting it myself because the stylists are just that bad. Even the Frenchies who cross the border to live here are mediocre in their craft. So I looked for the best place in NY to have my haircut before my last visit, and am soooo happy I found Alibi. Nico listened to my hair story, looked at the ideas I brought and recommended what would and would not work with my face shape. He took his time and explained what and why he was doing everything, checking in with me every step of the way. At one point, I didn't really like the look I was getting with the fringe (it was too long and I didn't like how it was falling) so he changed the shape and shortened it, and it totally transformed my look! He ALSO colored my hair and it is EXACTLY the right color. This was nearly a month ago and I am still receiving compliments on my new look. What's more, he had a long term plan for my look and gave me notes to share with a stylist should I need a trim in Europe. There is no doubt that I will be back to see Nico at Alibi! read more

I heard about Alibi on Gilt City, used my voucher for a Ombre hair coloring. Can't say I was satisfied. My appointment was at 12:30pm and I didn't get seen until 1:10pm. After waiting for 40 minutes I was given my consultation. They did continuously offer mimosas which I did appreciate during the long wait. I had brought in a picture of exactly what I wanted, the ombre coloring. The coloring went from black to brown to blonde in my picture. Instead I got blonde underneath and some highlight lookalikes. It definitely wasn't what I asked for nor any form of ombre. I didn't like it when the stylist had already moved on to the next client while the color was settling in. He had 2 different girls blow dry my hair and checked periodically. I understand they might have been busy but it seemed he took care of the prior client before me and after me. I was unsatisfied with the service and was really looking forward to hopefully liking it to become a usual customer. Maybe my visit was a fluke, I don't know but I definitely wasn't satisfied. read more

this is going to be a two part review. If you've purchased a Gilt deal or anything of the sort, read the whole thing. If you're just checking to see if you found a good salon, here's your quick review: I came for an ombre color with Natalie and she is amazing. Trust her. Let her do her job and you won't be disappointed. The salon is super clean and professional and they take care of you as soon as you walk in. The added bonus, you get a hand massage in the middle of your hair service! Natalie was a master at what she did and she genuinely cares about her coloring and will want you to come back if the color fades or if you aren't completely satisfied with it. Moral of the story: great salon. Here's the Gilt Review: Purchased a deal for ombre hair coloring and I had every intention of leaving with my ends completely dyed on my entire head. I left with about 5 strands of highlighted hair...Make no mistake, this is no reflection on Natalie and her hair coloring expertise. She did a great job, but I'm almost positive that she was instructed to color the hair this way. It's just a half ass way for the salon to get away with doing "ombre" and still offering a great deal. I paid $89 for the certificate and to get ombre coloring done the right way, this would have been an amazing deal. Instead, they were super sneaky, gave you "ombre" highlights on just the top portion of your hair, which wasn't even equivalent to half a head of highlights. While I was happy with the overall look of my hair and the service I received, I feel so cheated and had I known, I would have never purchased the Gilt deal. Very very sneaky and because of that, I probably won't come back. The only reason I would is because Natalie is a miracle worker and does an amazing job. read more

20 days ago I got a single process with Holly. This was the 3rd time she was using a new color line from Redkin called Chromatics that has little or no chemicals. The first time she did it I had like 2 inches of roots and the result was okay not great. The 2nd and 3rd time it looked nice. This last time it looked good. 4 days after I get a blow out at another place that just does blowouts and the girl is like "Um whats up with your color? and i was like well...I just got it done Friday and she was like it did not take you can totally see the grey. do you want me to fix it?" answer: no bitch Holly colors my hair not you (did not actually say this but even though she was trying to be helpful I found her manner super unappealing) So today I show up at Alibi (have been busy and obsessing over whether that woman was just on crack, opportunistic or if there is in fact a problem) Holly was coming in later so I returned thinking I was just going to have a chat about it-well you know what we talked for like 90 seconds and she was like yeah your grey is super resistant unfortunately we may have to go back tp the more chemically formula; and then I sat down and she touched it up with that stuff and did not charge me. THIS is what a motherf****ing professional does when the client is unhappy. I am so glad I spoke up (which is like a personal triumph in my life that is to long to go into here and not really relevant to a yelp review) SO I have about 6 weeks this time and will be touching up before thanksgiving. hooray. read more

I went here yesterday for color by Amanda May. I saw an article she contributed to in InStyle about hair strobing. I have never gotten balayage but wanted to try something new. I was extremely impressed with her and the salon as a whole. Since it was my first time with her and getting balayage. Before she began she explained the difference using foil and balayage and what I could expect. She wanted me to know that it would have a different look. She took the time to look at my hair and even shape face and eye color to figure out what she thought would look best. When asking if I wanted a half or full, she didn't try to up-sell me. She told me what she honestly thought. It was a very relaxing experience and it turned out fabulous!!! The salon itself has a very sophisticated but laid back vibe - they had fresh homemade tea, mimosas, water, etc. They also give hand massages during your blow out! So I felt spontaneous last week, rescheduled my appointment at Alibi (from next day to same day, which the salon easily accommodated) and decided to go chop chop on my mid-length redhead five minutes pre-appointment. I can't remember getting this many compliments ever on anything (a colleague of mine even gave me a hug he liked my new hair so much!) and it's about time to pass them along to the woman who performed the magic, Mona at Alibi Salon in Soho. She got immediately excited when I shared my idea for the new cut which, together with my confidence in her chopping and coloring skills, carried me through the "what was I thinking" moment when I saw all the hair fall. Mona patiently perfected my cut although it was getting late and we were the last people in the salon that evening. Knowing that she wouldn't ever let me out of that chair, let alone walk out the door, without the color and cut being just right is why I'll keep coming back and recommending her and Alibi over and over. All in all, it's not just the results but also the very friendly, relaxed ... and relaxing (hand massage is all I have to say ... it should really be spelled massaaaaaahhge) atmosphere at Alibi that makes me happy I found this Soho gem in the first place. It may seem antithetical for someone who is lower-than-low-maintenance like me to spend money on a good haircut-- but after having a bad free haircut in Taiwan (HEY! I got forced into it!) and then a so-so haircut in LA (where I'm based)-- flying out to NYC to get a GREAT haircut from Liz at Alibi was worth every penny. Liz has been cutting my hair for years-- since she was based in LA-- and although I've looked, I haven't found someone else who consistently does a good job with my hair. My hair isn't terribly difficult to work with-- and although Liz's specialty is coloring-- I don't color or process my hair in any way. So you would think I'd be able to find someone in my time zone to cut it! Liz pays attention to your hair type, the shape of your face, and most importantly, to YOU when she cuts your hair. Since she moved to NY, I've flown out and and gotten my hair cut twice-- and waited for her to come to LA numerous times. We were only in NYC for a short time, so for our schedules to work this time, Liz actually paid us a house call (ok, so it was a hotel call and yes, I tipped housecleaning extra for the mess of hair we left in the bathroom). For all you lucky folk who are already in NY, you don't have to pay for a flight or a hotel room! Update: Cristina is no longer at Alibi. She's now at the Heights Salon in Brooklyn Heights, she's still my stylist & she still does keratin! Cristina at Alibi has been cutting and coloring my hair (very well I might add), and she suggested I try the keratin treatment which reportedly smooths and straightens frizzy hair like mine. Yeah right, I thought. So I read up on it. It's not cheap, but with this crazy heatwave we've been having and how difficult my long hair is to blow out and how frizzy it gets, I decided to give it a try. The keratin product used was Coppola Keratin Complex Treatment. The process took about 2-3 hours (I have long hair so I relaxed & drank their delicious Moroccan mint tea) and I didn't have any issues with smoking, itchy or irritated eyes (that I had read about). When we were done, we both just kinda looked at my hair, mouth agape, because it was drop dead straight, shiny and gorgeous! This particular product requires you leave it in your hair for 3 days before washing. It held up really well for three days, but I couldn't tuck my hair, clip or put it up which drove me nuts after day 2. When I finally washed my hair, I was shocked by how great it looked. And today, a week later when it's 97 degrees out, I can tell you that it took less than 5 minutes to dry my hair and that it's straight (but not poker straight), has shine and body, and that prior, I would only get my hair to look like this in the Fall or Winter and only after visiting a salon. So, yay to Cristina and if you're in the market for this Coppola Keratin Complex Treatment, I can't recommend it or her enough! read more

The service from the entire staff was impeccable! Everyone was so sweet and definitely didn't feel like a typical "lemme kiss your ass a la NYC style". Back to Igor, who aside from an absolute doll, was very cautious and meticulous with his cutting. Def not scissor happy, and took instructions carefully. A week later and my cut still looks good (face framing layers) and still love my long length! Definitely enjoyed the experience and my cut! read more

I got a free cut from Igor who was instructed by Kelly, they were really careful about how to cut my hair , they respect my opinion and I'm very happy with the cut! UPDATE - Wanted to check in after my 1st cut+color touch up. Appointment was 2 weeks ago and cut and color are very much in tact and growing out nicely. Amanda May reevaluated my grown out, heavy locks - kept the length (long layers) and added plenty of movement. She added very thin, faceframing highlights. This allows me to let all grow out gradually, with the newer color focusing at the front. Love this girl! read more

I've followed my colorist Jenna from her old salon to alibi. The salon is beautiful, smallish, and bright. It has a good vibe - people like it there and you can tell. The clientele is a cross section of humanity from the cosmetic industry chic to average schlubs like me. One thing that impressed me... The assistants are warm friendly and BUSY. They give you a hand massage. How awesome is that. And Jenna .. Jenna is a treasure. She's had me in red hair rehab, correcting my home coloring overdo.. I went through Salon Apprentice to find a complimentary haircut and I got one from Icie, but there were also other students practicing on models when I went. Obviously I cannot comment on the full service (sounds like they give complimentary drinks!) because mine was a learning session and actually took a long time. This was my first time being a hair model for anyone and I was pretty nervous. The teacher was always there to double check and my haircut (long bob) turned out wonderfully! I would come back for an actual haircut, but the prices are a bit steep and I've always gone to a place in the LES that is much cheaper, but I must say I'm really impressed with my free haircut and the overall salon. read more

So I like to pretend on weekends that I live in Soho. The cobble stone streets, the cafes, galleries and designer showrooms - LOVE. I try to get to that neighborhood as often as possible - my gyno is there, my dentist is there, my waxer and facialist are there, and I eat at Balthazar as often as possible. It stands to reason that my hair stylist would also be there. I came across David Reposar at Alibi via a friend's recommendation. I was impressed by the decor, but blown away by the MAN who is David. He and the uber-friendly, not-at-all-pretentious staff welcomed me into the space, offered me a mimosa (because who doesn't need a drink at 10am), and began our appointment with a thoughtful consult. I was looking to bring some edge to a hairstyle that I'd been clinging to for way too long. David gave me the confidence I needed to try something different without making a drastic departure from my comfort zone. He hit the nail on the head, and from the moment he started working with my hair, it just FELT BETTER. He is such an expert, such a visionary, and such a fantastic person to talk to while sitting in a chair for an hour. I can't say enough about my experience, about David, and about my new haircut.
