I had highlights done here about a month ago that look alright, but I regret going... And I've had negative feelings about it since, so I'm hoping getting it off my chest will help. Here's my experience... I had some nice highlights done while I was wintering in Florida, but I guess that stylist "broke my base" and left me with obvious roots after only 5-6 weeks. When I came back to NY I wanted to get some "T section highlights" done just to break up those roots. I have a great hair cutter at Sally Hershberger, and her associate quoted me $275 for partial highlights with gloss, but told me they don't really do less than that. I passed since I just had the prior highlights done and I felt I didn't need a proper partial yet. I then called several places in my neighborhood (Greenwich/West Village) for other quotes just for the T section, or 10-15 foils, including gloss. The range most gave me was $125-200 total, which I felt was reasonable, but most couldn't take me for weeks. I was delighted when the front desk person at Damian West said they could see me that week and it would be "up to $200, for everything [including gloss]". From our conversation I was left hopeful that it would likely be less than $200 total. I explained again to my stylist when I got there that I just wanted minimal foils to break up the roots, that long term I was going for a natural ombré effect from root to ends. I was surprised when she put no less than 40 foils on my head. At that point I started to get uncomfortable and checked with her on price, to which she replied "partials start at $200 and that does not include gloss, so it's usually $250+"... I explained to her the conversation I had had with their front desk prior to booking my appointment, and she told me there was no way I was told that, and to "check the prices online". Um ma'am I would've just stayed at Sally Hershberger for my color if I wanted to pay that much. That was the entire point of my calling around and making a second trip. I know what the front desk told me - I Never would've gone there otherwise. It was awful sitting in that chair for the next two hours, feeling like I was being duped, after basically being called a liar. She tried to talk me into getting the gloss of course for extra $ but I was so upset at that point that I said let's see how just the foils look first. And then I said I didn't need a blow out, hoping she could do even a clear gloss instead given the miscommunication as they're both about the same price (~$50)... But she went ahead and blew my hair out anyway. In fact even after I told her I had no where to be the next couple days and was really tired and ready to go and was concerned about overly drying my unglossed hair, she continued to spend like an hour blowing my hair out - aggressively pulling and blow drying the same sections over and over. It just felt like she really didn't care about me and what I wanted... It was an exhausting interaction. I acknowledge that some people who are willing to pay top dollar might be happy with a colorist that applies extra foils and spends extra time blowing you out. And maybe that's the kind of client she's used to catering to. But I also think that if that's their shtick, their front desk person should just be upfront. I was very clear I wanted minimal service for a minimal price, which obviously is not something they offer here -- he should have said that. The Sally Herberger associate had no problem being candid - why is it different here? When I left Damian West, my hair was lighter than it had been in years, which is not the look I was going for. And more importantly, it felt damaged and had breakage where it did not previously. I ended up getting a gloss elsewhere to try to correct these issues, and it got a little better, but not entirely. DW was supposed to be one of the better salons in New York and I just did not feel that I received near that level of service or treatment. read more

Wow, this review is really going to stick out compared to the glowing reviews. It looks like people followed their stylists here. Sometimes the ambiance of being in this area of town leads to over inflation in ratings so I'll completely leave that out of this review. Its a cute place with a fire place cat and garden, you think its yours though its the most trendy place around and its usually people who don't live around here who frequent it. I don't recall the name of the woman who did my hair, I had it colored - so if you avoid her you may well have a great experience. I think she was from New Jersey - it was not any of the stylists mentioned in the other reviews. So, after talking to her about it she lectured me on how she could not ever so slightly use a lighter shade which was fine - this was an extended conversation it went on for so long I let her have it her way. She yanked my hair on my scalp so hard it hurt every time she parted my hair, she said it would be impossible not do it any other way. Funny I've had this done a few times and not once was it yanked. I asked her not to and she was defensive. Her blow dry was horrid - more yanking and it all fell flat. The funny part was at the end after all her lecturing, my roots ended up lighter and when she saw this she tried to play it off by saying, well I decided in the end to lift them one shade. Naaa, she saw that my hair absorbed her mixture differently than she intended and did not know what else to say - as I told her this would happen. Sometimes when you don't know someone and you are not their client, they don't really take the time to provide you with great service - that's just the nature of a lot places -so I can see how all these reviews who talk about following someone got treated well. read more

OMFG! I can't believe I never Yelped my wonderful stylist, Bailey! I've been so busy Yelping everything else, I totally overlooked one of the most important person in my life, my STYLIST, who makes me feel so sexy and pretty after he works his magic! I have been going to Bailey for years after spending WAY too much $$ at well known salons after I moved here from SF. I have followed Bailey to every salon he's moved to because he actually LISTENS to me and gives me what I want. He never rushes me and takes his time cutting my hair and the result is ALWAYS good! He gives me advice and recommendations after I tell him what I want done and never, EVER product pushes on me. He is honest and candid whenever I ask him about products and their worth. The salon is in a very charming hood and is very intimate and cozy. The people working there are very pleasant and friendly unlike the name brand salons whose receptionist's think they are GOD! I HIGHLY recommend Bailey for both cut and color because he is one stylist who really is good at doing both. I have been going to Damian West Salon for the past 10 years and I absolutely love this place. As soon as you enter the salon the friendly receptionists welcomes you with the gracious of attention and quickly makes you feel at home. The salon is pretty big and it has a great backyard where in the summer you can relax with greens all around you while reading your favorite magazine or waiting for your appointment. Make sure to request Bailey. He is the best hairstylist. His minimalist attention to details always make my hair look amazing even with my annoying requests. I recently bought a package through Gilt for a haircut. Unlike the other reviewers, I was not greeted at all and wasn't offered anything to drink. I was struck by how sparse the decor was in the salon, as well as the in-house cat that was roaming throughout the salon. I had my haircut by Robbie, who I would definitely recommend. She first did an analysis of my hair and then washed my hair herself! She was so nice while cutting my hair and really did a great job. I'm not sure that I would run back to this salon for a full price haircut (I can get my hair cut for half the price on Long Island), but I would definitely recommend to others who are looking for a good place to go. read more

Overall, I was pleased. I had previously heard of Damian West from a coworker's friend who has been going to Betsey for coloring for years. Lucky for me they happened to have a GiltCity deal right at the exact time I was feeling drab and needing a pick-me-up in the form of new highlights. This place is expensive! A mini highlight equals what a half highlight should, and a full highlight is $300! Insane, though I'm assuming there must be reason for it. I did not look into their other stylists much, but they must be highly skilled to justify charging that much. So here's what happened: I had a tidbit of my red highlights from last year still at the ends of my hair. When I visited Betsey I asked her to replicate the color. She was liberal with applying the color which I was excited about and overall a real gem as a person . When she finished my new 'do though, I could barely see the color. A few days passed and it looked as though my hair was actually darker up by my roots and lighter at the ends, where my other highlights had been. I called the salon and they were so understanding and said that I had two weeks to return and have them fixed. I made a follow up and can't help but admit I was nervous, who knew how this salon would handle this kind of situation? However, I arrived and everyone was so friendly. Betsey was super warm and fixed my hair up right away. I told her she didn't need to give me a full blow out (I didn't want to end up paying for it) and she said not to worry and that an assistant would do it. When it was time to rinse out the color, I told the assistant to not bother with a blow out and just dry it enough so it's not wet (brrr it was cold outside). He said no worries, he didn't mind doing it, and he gave me an amazing blow out that looked absolutely gorgeous, free of charge! Best thing is it was Friday night and I was going out right after, SCORE! The receptionist smiled and said I was all set though I couldn't help leaving another tip. I was so pleased with my experience here and how they handled this sticky situation. My hair looks great and I couldn't be happier. One star is knocked off only because the prices here are out of this world and I most likely won't go back until I 1) get a significant pay raise and 2) can afford it without GiltCity helping me out :-) read more

This "new" location is really nice, especially when you go upstairs and see the backyard that they have. The downstairs space is very cozy and intimate. I'm a 1st timer at this salon, lured in by a recent promotion from Gilt. I've been looking for a new hairdresser anyway (recently had been trekking out to Phily for the last few "good" cuts!) so I decided to give Damian West a try. The salon is located in a great physical location on W4th, and in a beautiful townhouse - exposed brick, private backyard, uncluttered, relatively quiet, etc. I arrived 10 minutes early and was given a warm greeting by the friendly "front desk" staffer who offered me a beverage (I chose the "sangria"), and soon afterwards a smiling male hairdresser by the name of Bailey led me to the upstairs equally attractive, sparse, yet upscale space. I explained that although my hair was short, it was very thick and I would like him to "cut into" the top to allow for better separation. While cutting my hair, Bailey was naturally friendly and engaging and I felt like I was in extremely competent hands . After blow drying my hair, I noticed it was still a bit "heavy" but he assured me that he wasn't finished and precisely snipped the ends in a technique I had never seen before (though it looked impressive) for a few more minutes. My haircut was done and although I was generally happy with the style, I knew deep down that the top was still a bit too heavy. Oh well, I'll work with it, I thought. After a few days of trying to maneuver products through the denser part of the cut I just decided to call back (something every customer hates to do) and ask the front desk person if the stylist could spend 5 minutes to possibly "lighten it up" a bit. "No problem, tell me when you want to come in" was the good natured reply. "How about later today?", "Sure he's free at 1, just stop on by" That was easy I thought. Absolutely no questions, no attitude, etc. I was warmly greeted again by the same front desk staffer and soon Bailey was coming down the steps... again with that same warm smile. When I explained to him the "problem" he was so cool about it. "I see what you mean, I'm just gonna use a texturizing scissor this time." He took his time and not only thinned out the top, he snipped around the sides and back as well. It now looked fantastic! In conclusion, I left with a great haircut, and a good feeling as I walked out the door. Everyone I encountered was top notch. Excellent customer service ... He gave me my first long bob which I got endless compliments on. We recently just went lighter on my color (which I haven't done in years!) He did such an amazing job! When i first moved to the neighborhood, i had two horrifying experiences with other salon's in the west village. My natural hair color is a sandy brown, but i get it died pretty light blond. With fried hair, a terrible hair cut, spotted color, and blinding roots (after only 10 days), i desperately searched on yelp and found Damian West. They fit me in last minute and Sia saved my hair! Immediately my color was fixed (which isn't easy to do one someone messes up with bleach) and my botchy hair cut cleaned up. Since then Sia has helped make my hair healthier than ever -in the past i've always had to go in once/month to fill in my roots, but i see Sia once every 2.5-3 months and even still my color looks natural (no lines or bad roots!). I've been going to Damian West for about five years. Bailey is amazing! For my first appointment I wanted to go lighter (something many other high-end salons had not been able to do). Bailey worked tirelessly to get my highlights exactly right. Sadly, now I mostly go to cover up grays, so I'm at the salon a lot! Bailey is also great with the scissors, although I only get a cut once or twice a year. Robbie has also colored my hair several times and she has been amazing every time! Both of them are fantastic. I always feel at ease at this salon. I've been wanting something very specific and apparently a bit unusual for face framing highlights. I've gone to a few different salons, one of them a few times, to try to get what I want. Spressa sat down with me to listen and understood what I wanted and Sija is the first one who got it right. Because of the texture of my hair they suggested I have a relaxer treatment. I've gotten the keratin treatment at other places which has left my hair pin straight. Brian did such a great job - it took out the frizz but left the body. I'm so impressed with the entire experience from the warm, friendly townhouse atmosphere to the exceptional service by all. I've been going to the salon for more than 15 years. I used to live in the hood and stumbled on the old salon on 10th street. Started out seeing Brian and also had owner Spressa cut my hair and do color at times. Spressa was always good although as the owner of the salon one gets the feeling that she's multi-tasking while working on your hair, but since I liked her and the salon I never really said something. I realize now I should have. Meanwhile, I also liked the low-key vibe of the place and thus, was happy to trade in the uber-expensive and very attitudey midtown salons for this family-run place where the service on all levels was just as good if not better. Over the years I saw Sija (sister to Spressa) go from washing hair (she didn't have her license yet) to being a good colorist; I was happy to have her do my color. As she became more experienced my color got even better and I had many compliments. That in conjunction with reasonable rates left me very happy. And I eventually considered Spressa and Sija friends as well. Over the years I sent quite a number of friends to Sija. I know one friend loves her color work; some others didn't think she was so great and found her demeanor a bit off putting. (She has issues with criticism so keep in mind.) She also told me she felt pressured into seeing her more often than she could afford so she stopped going. I continued to see Brian for cuts for years. I even considered him a friend. Unfortunately, his inability to show up for a scheduled appointment on time (even close to the scheduled time) resulted in me having to switch over to different people. I liked Shelly but she left to open her own place. Sometimes it was easier to have Sija cut my hair as well since I wasn't going for anything that stylish. I kept it pretty classic. She was fine with the scissors, but again she doesn't do well with criticism so I tried to keep my comments to "It looks great." All this is written to give some context for what has to be a very disappointing review. Bottom line: I know this place. I know the stylists and I know Sija as a colorist. More recently I decided to have extensions and so it was natural for me to ask her to do them. Mistake! Ultimately, I had to have several sessions with her to get the length right. She definitely has some OCD which is good except when you want the job finished. I didn't think I was going to have to put in that much time. I just wanted them done. It dragged on for weeks and weeks. I paid $300 for the hair but the job was never finished. We agreed that Sija would finish whatever needed to be done re: any trimming on my last visit and that she would show me how to deal with the clips at that time as well. I never understood how to work the clips and whenever she was discussing it with me I felt like she thought I was a fellow stylist. She's not very patient and if you can't understand how to get the clips right then what's the point in getting extensions since you're not going to wear them. Or at least I certainly wasn't. So that was a problem. Anyway, the rest of the work: the final trimming, showing me how to work the clips, putting the extensions in would be done, we agreed, at a later session and that would cost another $300 so $600 in total for the extensions. OK, so from what I saw (and I only ever saw the hair one time) the color seemed decent not great. I did think it was odd that I paid a good amount for the extra long hair when Sija wound up cutting them so much. Not sure why I couldn't have just paid less for the shorter hair???? Because of something totally unexpected that happened the week I was supposed to come in and have her finish the job I never got them. In that time, Sija and I had a falling out. So, now I've spent $300 on "hair" that hasn't been finished so I can't really do anything with it. I tried to call Spressa to see how she wanted to handle it. I figured I'd come in and have my hair cut and colored and have the rest of the work done but with a different person. Well, Spressa never got back to me which in the past would never have happened. Not very professional! In the meantime, another stylist from the salon, one I've known for years as well, texted me the names of other salons that used the same color as the salon and my formula! My formula!!! So, after 15 years, and a fortune spent at the salon, (not to mention all the support and friendship I've shown, etc.) it was very clear that they (Sija and Spressa) did not want me back. I was shown the door in a text! Wow, very classy!!! I'm hardly going to pick up hair that I paid for and take it to some new salon and say, "Hey, can you finish the job that this place/colorist started? My budget is $300." So, I lost that chunk of money. You live and learn. Not very nice people and not very professional. #Huge disappointment. read more

I met Gregory about a year ago - I had come to him with super thin hair that I had recently gone brunette with. You can imagine the damage from years of going platinum blonde. The breakage was awful. I had done every sort of extension on the market which was always disaapointing. Gregory was exactly who I was looking for because he understands the importance of making hair look NATURAL! This is NYC not Vegas - I didn't want noticeable extensions. He does them absolutely flawless and unnoticeable. Greg brought my hair to full, luxurious and bombshell quality. As a commercial model actress it's so important that my hair is in perfect condition. It's like for the first time in my life I actually adore my hair. Gregory's technique is nothing short of absolute perfection and it's beyond quick (no sitting in the chair for hours!) - It literally took 35 minutes for him to transform my hair. Paula is AMAZING. My first game changing haircut with her took place over 6 years ago and I've followed her around the city ever since! She has skillfully ushered me into the world of bangs and held my hand when I decided to chop my hair into a fierce wedge grew it all back out again. In our many years I've never left her chair feeling or looking anything short of fabulous. I really can't say enough wonderful things about her skills OR her sweet personality. I also LOVE the Damien West Salon. There's a sense of calm when you walk through the door and you know you're going to be taken care of. Chris is THE BEST - I get so many compliments on my hair after each visit. He does my single process color and cuts (I have dark hair) and also has given my roommate and another friend who both have blonde hair fantastic highlights and cuts. He really considers your hair texture and regular routine in the cut, so it looks good not just when you leave, but after you wash it at home. I am returning client. A few years ago, I moved from the village to the UWS and wanted to stay local to avoid the commute. Big mistake. My hair was a mess, everything was off, the cut, the color and the texture of my hair. I have fine hair and the last stylist cut my hair that the ends were thin. It looked like really bad mom hair. Sija is great! I am so relived I went back. Sija has a real passion for hair color and the beauty industry. She was so kind to not criticize my mullet cut and guided me to what needs to be done to correct the cut and color. It looks natural and beautiful. She has a real talent I am so happy she was still at the salon. My hair looks so pretty, I took about 50 selfies, that's how nice it looks. The worst haircut of my life. I am very dissatisfied with my experience here. Laara raynier gave me a haircut. She is an abrasive old British lady and doesn't listen to what client is looking for. She gave me a haircut exactly opposite of what I asked for. Another client who got haircut from her had a massive disappointment on her face as well. Josh is a glory of a stylist. She took my huge head of wavy hair -- which has defeated other stylists before -- and shaped it, lightened it, gave it movement and whole new look. Also blown out to perfection so I couldn't tear myself from the mirror, too stuck on admiring the results! It was one of the easiest cuts I've ever had and we chattered away most of the time; her delicious British accent is part of the appeal too! I volunteered myself as a model via Craigslist to get my haircut during one of the owner's master haircut classes. On top of the fact that they promised a pay for your time ($20) that never happened, I got the worst haircut ever! I could've done a better job myself. And they had a cat in the salon just wondering around .. they served coffee and pastries and the cat was walking around all the food, licking and sniffing everything. Worst hair cut I've ever had!!!! I'm not picky but I was given a mullet! A straight up MULLET! Which is messed up considering my instructions - "hey I want it alittle shorter, but do whatever you want. I just don't want a mullet." It took the guy over an hour to do, I let him do what he wanted. The final product was heinous. I politely asked him to cut the back more (you know, make the best out of a bad situation) and it was STILL kind of a mullet. I've had $20 haircuts better than this $90 cut at Damian West. It also grew out terribly-the mark of a shitty hair cut. Not one of my friends though it was good. I've rocked various short hair cuts over the years but this one was actually alittle embarrassing. My friend who is a hair dresser saw me and was like "uh...WTF happened?" I'm not saying that it was the worst haircut of all time, but it was the least flattering I've had since I was like 13 and all in all a huge rip off. On the plus side, the guy was very nice and polite the entire time... he just sucked at cutting my hair. Maybe he's only good with long cuts or coloring? Maybe it was just an off day for him? I can't remember his name, but he was a tall white gay guy with bad hair (should have tipped me off right?). Perhaps the other people who work here are more talented, but AVOID that guy!!! I just had the best haircut of my life at this salon last night. Do yourself a favor and see Robbie. She is spectacular! The salon itself is very inviting. Has a very cozy feel to it. The woman working the front desk greeted me the moment I walked through the door and immediately offered me something to drink. I have been going to Paula for over two years now, and she has consistently made me feel amazing every time I walk out of Damian West. I have very short hair and have changed the color of it every 6-8 weeks for the past two years with Paula - She has brought me from platinum to red to brown and back again. She listens intently to what I am looking for, gives suggestions if my ideas are unclear or not a good fit for my hair/face, then ducks away for five minutes to make her magic potion, only to come back and impress me every time with what she does. Beyond that, Paula is incredibly warm and welcoming, and I look forward to getting my hair done because of her. Of course, the salon atmosphere helps, too! You can tell when you're in Damian West that everyone is happy to be doing what they are doing. The decoration is spare but beautiful, and a glass of wine or sparkling water is always a nice treat. All in all, Damian West is great, and if you have short either and/or recolor often, I would very highly recommend Paula - She's my go-to girl! read more

Paula at Damian West is amazing. I always look forward to my cut and color with her. Not only is she warm and friendly, but she gives me the most fabulous hairstyles. I have always wanted to go pixie and platinum but never encountered a stylist I trusted enough to cut my very thick hair without making it look like a middle-age Midwestern mom. Once I found Paula, my trepidations vanished. She has that x-factor and knows just how to cut my hair so it's young and modern and grows out well. I even have people stop me on the street to take pictures of it. (One stranger even ended up going to Paula after her original stylist couldn't get her cut right.) Also, Paula will be honest about what works for me and what doesn't, which I always appreciate. In addition, I am a personal wardrobe stylist, and I can send my clients and my friends to Paula without any hesitation, and they always come to me ecstatic with the results.
