It's my birthday today, and since I didn't have to work I decided I'd go for breakfast. I shop a lot at the SVDP next door and always see this place, and since it's close to where I live I decided to stop by. And being an Arlo Guthrie fan, the cute name won me over. It's very cute on the inside. Kind of kitschy. And bigger than I thought it would be. I ordered the chicken fried steak and eggs with wheat toast, and it was good. Not memorable. Not spectacular. I'm pretty sure the steak was a frozen patty that was hurled into a deep fryer. Home fries were good, gravy was okay, Coffee was....eh. It's coffee. Service was fast but not especially friendly. Maybe spoiled by going to places like Frank's, Bobo's, Poco & Mom's, etc...but the waitress just went through her paces. I wouldn't say she was unfriendly per se, but she wasn't that personal. I'll probably stick with Frank's or Bobo's or drive to the East side to have one of those New Mexico breakfasts from Poco & Mom's. I haven't been to Alice's in while, I ordered the meat lover special $7.29 breakfast that was on the white board. They omelette was just okay(some runny white) but palatable, the wait staff was very friendly. But, whom ever is in the back running things has no sense of customer service. The white board was suddenly erased and the two gentlemen behind me who arrived before me was asked what they wanted and one of them wanted the special as well. He had been sitting there much longer than me, he was told the special ended. He relayed that he had been sitting there before me. Still denied. The waitress was super cool. The food was good. But Alice, the owner, was so ungracious and downright rude. As we were leaving, my friend went to her car to grab a reusable cup as not to waste one to take the rest of her water with her, and Alice chimes in and says "you can't have a drink from outside in here." I went into Alice's Restaurant with a friend and ended up splitting the bill. The waitress swiped my card and then his and had him sign his recipe so he could put in a tip. He tipped $12 on a $20 meal. Later I checked my credit card statement and it had charged me 12 dollars over the half that I had agreed to pay. I called the restaurant hoping to get it corrected. I talked to the manager and explained how I would feel awkward asking my friend for money and is there a way he could correct it from the store. He responded with "Your friend signed the wrong slip, are going to have to get over it being awkward." I was taken aback by this disrespectful customer service, and explained that the waitress had given him the wrong slip which was understandable, but I wasn't the one to agree to pay the $12. He ended up yelling at me over the phone. I am a huge advocate for local business. I was disgusted by how disrespectful the owner was, it doesn't seem like a good way to treat people let alone run a restaurant. I won't be going back. read more

As a breakfast junkie, Alice's restaurant is on my list of regular places to visit. This diner is a nice little gem little known in Tucson. I come here with my dad about once a month and have always had great service and the breakfast food I expect. The prices are right, too! I like that they ask before they refill coffee instead of just rushing to fill it. The hash browns usually need a little salt, but I'd rather they needed it simply added at the table instead of being too salty. Lately I've been getting the Hungry Jill which includes two eggs, bacon and sausage, hashbrowns, and French toast which is more food than I usually eat but it's a great way to get a taste of several different things they offer. Never in all my years have I experienced the level of rudeness that I experienced this morning at Alice's Restaurant the waitress was yelling that I had an outside cup and my car was parked across the street because I like to go there for my breakfast while I'm doing my laundry anyway she continue to berate me and yell at me and I said insisted I put my cup outside the restaurant physically while I use the bathroom while she processed my order well needless to say I have eaten there before and it's mediocre but while I'm doing the laundry it is the only show in town and you really can't mess up a cup of coffee in my mind she continue to chastise me at 11 that made everyone in the restaurant turn their head and look at her like she was out of her mind very sorry to say that I will never be back there ever read more

I love this place. Its a little diner type restaurant tucked into a strip mall adjacent to ace hardware on pima st. They serve breakfast all day and i aleays have that although they have a wide selection of lunch and dinner food. I have tried this place multiple times, each time i was never satisfied. I was the idiot who kept going back. I took my son and girlfriend and her daughter there and it again is the worst experience. They treat families as if they are the worst. It took 35 minutes for our food to come out and it wasn't even busy. I don't raise concerns because if they can't figue or where their problems are based on what food is being thrown out or who is unhappy while dining there, then they aren't very observant. I had the hungry Jack the last time and it tore me up the rest of the day. I will never go back, the service is what kills it for me. We should get to the food first, it is nothing special and you can get similar food at any breakfast place in the country. We came as a group, my order was placed first but I was the last to receive my food, by a good ten minutes. The waitress who took our orders went to great pains to put them on separate tickets, however when our check was presented it was one big check. No problem, right? In every other restaurant we go to, we all just queue up at the register and point out what was ours and pay our bill, no harm no foul. However that is not the case at Alice's. We had some confusion while trying to check out as we did not understand the process, that was when a person, who I have to guess was the owner, came out to berate us and threaten us with the police if we would not pay as one. I expressed our confusion and stated that some of us were paying with a card and not prepared for this policy but his response was that he didn't care. Next thing you know, a woman got into the act, I'm assuming she was the guy's wife as they are made for each other. I have never felt like my business was less welcomed or appreciated. To sum up; average food at best, slow service, and the most horrible attitude I've ever experienced. Not only will I never be back, but I will never fail to give this place my very worst recommendation. I would walk ten miles in my bare feet over cactus thorns in mid summer with no water to get to the next closest restaurant, fortunately there are plenty of other places in town who know how to take care of their customers. read more

Wow! That's just one word to describe my experience (My last one at that) today. Wow totally sums it up. However, when using the term "wow" to describe something, it doesn't always denote a positive. In this case, it was a negative. Today, My dad and I decided to go to Alice's for breakfast. It has been a long while since I visited Alice's with my parents and I thought it would be a nice day to start out with a breakfast from Alice's. As I usually do when I visit a restaurant, I like to try different items off their menu. Most of the time I have always ordered the usual eggs, bacon, hash browns, and pancakes at this restaurant, because I've always enjoyed it. But this time, I ordered a South of the Border, which is eggs, chorizo, salsa, and a choice of toast, flour tortilla, or corn tortilla. The server specifically asked what I wanted and I told him I wanted corn tortilla. When my order arrived, I only saw one soft corn tortilla and another cooked with scrambled eggs piled on top of it, a mound of chorizo sitting by itself on the other side of the plate, and a bowl of salsa. This was something I was trying to understand how I would go about eating this. There were two pieces of tortillas, but one was cooked and one wasn't. In my experience, of eating southwestern/Mexican style foods, I would make the choice of either ordering soft or hard tortillas. Even the server would ask me what my preference was. This server didn't even inform me of that fact. So, when I asked another server who just walked by, if she could explain to me the reason of having a hard tortilla and a soft tortilla, she answered, "You ordered the South of the Border, right?" To which I replied yes. Then she said, "Um, uh, it's just how it's made." I then tried to explain to her why I couldn't understand the reason behind this, as I didn't know how it was supposed to be eaten. I asked if she could get me another soft tortilla. Right after she went to the kitchen, the owner came up to our table and asked if there was a problem. I repeated the same questions to her and she then said, "That's how it's made." I asked her how I was supposed to eat this, as all of the eggs were piled on top of the hard tortilla and one soft one was just put to the side of the plate. She then repeated the same "That's how it's made" statement, and then said that it said so on the menu. I distinctly remember nothing being said in the menu under "South of the Border" of one of the tortillas being fried and one not. I looked at her and then said, "But I don't remember it saying so in the menu." Next thing she says? "You know, you complain all the time you come here! You have complained about everything we serve you!" If imagination is not working here, then I'll explain. This woman YELLED. She raised her voice at me. She literally took her voice pitch to the next level, essentially belittling and berating me as a CUSTOMER. A REPEAT paying customer who has given old fashioned word of mouth advertisement to friends, co-workers, and even those visiting Tucson. Apparently, the owner was oblivious to all of that, because she seemed to have a preconceived sense of who I was based on a previous experience MONTHS ago when I had a conversation with her regarding an item I ordered from their menu that included pancakes, to which I requested I didn't want and be charged for it. Back to her rant and belittlement, I told her that she didn't even know me and she has not even seen me the past three times I visited the restaurant since the last time I saw her. She had the audacity to claim that I complain EVERY time I eat there. The fact of the matter is that I never complained the past three visits. As I can recall, I never even saw her during those three different visits. She might have seen me, but then again, her exaggeration about my complaints made me even more uncomfortable sitting in this establishment. All the while this was taking place, my father was sitting across the table trying to make out what was really being said, she then turned to my father to communicate the issue with him, when he was trying to pacify the situation down to a minimum. She then told both of us that we needed to leave. I have visited this eatery I would say around 15 to 20 times. All I can say is this woman is obviously a disturbed and emotional character. She took the liberty to bring upon her unprofessional, immature, and rude behavior on a customer in front of a good number of other customers in the dining room. I don't care about issues if she's having any regarding anything, but there is NO reason and NO excuse for this type of treatment on her behalf to a customer whatsoever. This was very embarrassing, uncomfortable, and downright wrong. I feel no sympathy toward this woman at all. Her behavior deserves no recognition or respect for her restaurant. read more

Went here for breakfast with my family on Sunday morning. We had 3 adults and 4 children in our group, which I thought was too much for this "restaurant" to handle, but my husband insisted this was a good place so we stayed. The first thing the waitress did was move other people around to make room for us and then still put us in the back corner. She brought toys for the kids to play with, but when the 1 year old dropped one, she swooped back in and snatched the toys away rudely. After waiting for an hour we finally got our food, half cold and half blistering hot. had some missing items that we had to ask to get too. When we got the bill it was outrageous, was supposed to be 2 separate checks, they combined into 1 and added gratuity without saying anything. We ordered 2 pancakes, one kid pancake, a BLT, a turkey club and a $4.99 breakfast special, 7 drinks total... our bill $74. I added up the menu prices and came up with less than $40 for a total. When my husband said something about the bill and the rude waitress while paying, he was told that we were not welcome to come back and to leave. Overall... NOT worth it at all... Normally we love these "hole in the wall" type places, in the past they have been very family friendly. This one is definitely an exception. Don't go to Alice's, they are horrible! read more

Yes it has lots of Coke stuff and some Pepsi and has some nice plants but when I was there they didn't seem to care about service. They weren't that busy when I was there but it seemed to take a while to get my Ham & Eggs. The eggs were a bit over cooked, I was going to tell my server when she came back to check on my meal and/or refill my coffee cup but this never happened. When she delivered my check she didn't slow down as she walked past my table and then I had to wait 10 minutes to pay my bill. This was my 4th visit to Tucson in the past year so chances are I will be back there again but I won't give Alice's Restaurant another try. I have to say I've become a regular. I work in food service (manager) and so very critical of service and quality. This is certainly a different type of place: you'll see mostly regulars dining, where the servers know their name and order. Once I'd been in a few times the same happened to me. I have to say they have the best (and consistent) hash browns I've ever had! The hash browns alone are a reason to try this place! Have only had breakfast here, but it's my favorite. Beats the heck out of the chain restaurants, and feels like a little bit of home cooking. read more

I take my mom in every other Friday or so... and they are always very nice to us and to me it is some of the best breakfast around! YUM! This is my second trip to this establishment. It was recommended to me by my husband who has been there before. We invited our friends to join us to experience Alice's. WORST MISTAKE OF THE DAY. The service was horrible, the waitress and staff were so unbelievably rude. The waitess made a mistake on the order and gave us a lecture on how this mistake was going to be coming out of "her" paycheck. THEN we were insulted and called names by the cook who came out very aggressively to tell us that we had to eat the food even though it was the wrong order. If this sounds bogus...believe me it is not AND it gets worse. The cook grabs the food they brought to us error and slams them in the trash and says "I'll make you your f-ing pancakes you f-ing a-holes"......and I was so in shock by it all and how it all played out. We voiced our cencern saying that this is not way to treat patrons. And they demanded our money for the food....which we did not eat because we got up to leave since they they so rude to us. The situation escalated almost to the point of calling local authorities because of the aggresive and verbal display of the wait staff and the cook. It is such a shame because I really enjoyed that place when we went there the first time. And I am in shock at how we were treated oh and the staff really needs to becareful how they speak to one another also. I say that because while we were waiting for our food and that ridiculous display be the waitress and cook happened, that very same waitress be-luttle a new employee where the customers could hear, so unprofessional and tacky. Well what can you say about it? What you see is what you get. Lots of kitschy memorabilia hanging around and on shelving. The crowd there for breakfast was mostly blue hairs and probably the regulars. We sat at the counter for breakfast. The woman was not very friendly and was a very low talker. It was hard to hear her. I'm not saying she was rude, I'm just saying she seems like she has been dong this her whole life and she is in desperate need of a vacation. The food was ok. I got the special, which was chorizo, potatoes, and wheat toast. It was good but nothing I'd seek out again. My dining partner and I split a pancake and that's where they got it right. Crispy edges, thin, cooked just right pancake. If I ever do go back I'll stick with those and a side of bacon, 'cause their bacon was also cooked to perfection with being crispy but not overly so. What amazed me while looking around at the plethora of decorations is how clean everything was. you would think with all that memorabilia that you would see dust and all that but I didn't see anything. They must clean all that everyday or every other day. It's strange but even though there was an abundance of memorabilia it didn't seem junky. Everything was neat and in its place. Interesting reviews. Years ago I went for breakfast, The place wasn't crowded but it took over 20 minutes to get someone to take our order. Another 25 minutes later and all we got was our drinks. So we decided to leave and we got dirty looks from the person at the front and several other employees which we couldn't understand. But when I was pulling my car out of the parking space someone from the restaurant blocked my car by standing behind it. They started screaming that we left without paying. I told him we never got our food we waited 45 minutes and nothing came so we left. he said we had to pay for the drinks. I was absolutely shocked that we got no apology and then they expect us to pay for drinks we never drank. So I threw a dollar and some change out the window so that he would get out from behind my car so I could leave. He picked up the money and threw it back in my window and said now he's calling the cops for skipping out on the bill. I called the police as we were leaving and they told me that I needed to go back to the restaurant to pay my bill or risk being arrested. they had already called in my license plate and my description. I went back to the restaurant and handed the police officer the same money I tried to pay with earlier. he shook his head and said he could not believe the way they treat their customers. someone please explain to me why this place is so popular... a lot of the food looks (and tastes) like it came straight out of a can or out of whatever bulk food service container supplies them. of course, it's hard to screw up toast and bacon so these staples are always as expected--but nothing exceptional. my husband likes to meet his buddy here on the weekends so i tag along, but i seriously don't understand the allure, as this joint is always full of old people (aren't they sharks for great value? this phenomenon belies the fact). the waitresses aren't particularly friendly, nor are they speedy or picaresquely gruff. do yourself a favor and go to brawley's instead if you want a really good greasy spoon--better food, faster service, cheaper prices than alice's. i guess the only thing alice's has better than brawley's is all the kitschy coke and pepsi memorabilia on the walls. read more

Wait 45 mins for food while other who arrived after we ordered received their food the waiters offer to get the manager who is the owner so my sister could voice our concerns to no avail we received our food and the omelet was cold and dried out looked so my sister asked again to speak to owner and when she came over she said what is wrong not how can I help you or blank shared with me your concerns and I apologize after letting her know our concerns she told us you come here so if it takes longer it is ok we told her we have never wasted so long for food as we did today and her words were well what do you want me to do about it as she walked away. We expressed how unhappy we were with her attitude and she said oh well. This kind of attitude can explained why over the last few month their wit staff has been changing weekly.
