Everyone looked like they absolutely hated being there and put in the bare minimum effort to prove it. Zero energy, zero urgency, just a whole lot of indifference. How have I missed this place before now? I was looking for a centrally located cafe to meet a friend and chose it on geography alone. This is a sweet VERY independent cafe and bookstore! Adorable! They have a broad selection of books and seem to be very civic minded. We were there toward the end of the day, so there was not a huge choice in baked goods, but the coffee cake I selected was tasty and large enough to share. The books are both used and new, and although not really competitively priced, you want to support them and so you do! I wasn't going to attend my monthly Camino group coffee chat this morning UNTIL I learned it was at a bookstore coffee place all in one!! I'm SO glad I went! I had a Chai that's made right here, and it was delish! When I arrived I had already eaten breakfast, so didn't try any of the treats, but will definitely be reserving that for next time! I so enjoyed browsing the new and used books, puzzles, coffee and more, and ended up leaving with some coffee from Oaxaca, and a cool puzzle! The owner was delightful, and offered to take a picture of our group! I felt right at home here, and LOVED the chairs! It's a little hidden on the side of the Sprouts shopping center, so look for it, it's worth it! Very vibey place! I'll be back!! read more

Revolutionary Grounds Café is one for the BOOKS! (Every sense of the way) super cool place. It's a wonderful bookstore + cafe with the books everyone should be reading about. If you want to free your mind and know the truth and history of many subjects they have a bunch of selections to offer. In an age where facts seem to not matter anymore; it's refreshing that such a place exists. We were grateful to share the space for a little. When we got in our barista was very friendly and inviting. Vyloth showed us the menu and shared a "know your rights" card when ICE was just ramping up. This alone made me like this business even more! It's a safe space, LGBTQIA+ friendly and much more! They host community events and are a pillar of humanity out in Arizona. They got quotes on tables and free books in the little library. What was really cool was you could buy a blind book, picked by staff! Vyloth makes a great drink and great conversation. We really enjoyed our time here. The coffee was excellent and the people made it all the better. Stop in and have some tea and for a read, you'll open your mind and heart and leave happier then you came in! Quite by accident I discovered this bookstore while walking Swan Road. I went in for a cup of coffee and browsed the shelves of new and used books. What a sweet little coffee shop! My friend needed some extra time to flash-clean her house before we stopped by, so we decided to make a quick stop for coffee. Bookstore PLUS coffee? Yes, please and thank you. The coffee was excellent and I really enjoyed browsing the books they offer. I think my only ME-PROBLEM that I had was that I wanted the space to be a bit cozier. Aside from that, this seems like it could be a great place to meet up with friends to play a game or have a book club. Excellent little spot. read more

the vibes are really cool and i enjoy the concept. i got a latte and a cold brew. the coldbrew was fine. it was like any other cold brew. but my latte was straight milk. you couldnt taste the flavor and it was kinda gross. but i figured i could fix it up with my coffee stuff at home since no actual espresso was in the drink. when i opened the lid to pour my homemade coffee in it, the milk was curdled and smelled awful. im glad i only took a sip... i cant believe neither the barista or i had noticed before leaving the shop. got a couple pastries and they were delicious. but the idea that i drank sour milk with no espresso after paying for an espresso beverage with the assumption i wouldnt get cheese curds in the mix, made me kinda sad. i really wanted to love this place but i appreciate its sentiment at best. read more

Sweet little place with vegan sweets! I think it would be neat to have some paper menus since I felt a bit awkward staring at the one next to the register (maybe there was some though that I didn't see!) I can also see them doing well with a pay it forward program. (The bottom line in detroit did this- people would pay for plain black coffees that those who couldn't afford could have some caffeine. I know around this area there's a few homeless folks and i feel like that spirit of giving would fit the communist sort of thinking?) Very laid back atmosphere, lots of books to read. I really enjoyed reading a small segment of a queer punk / queercore history book. I may get it next time. I would hope post covid to see prison letter writing meet ups and more here. It seems like it would make a really neat leftist community space. More zines would also be pretty cool, like Quimbys bookstore. There's tons of zines on leftist revolution. Overall great shop. I had lunch here with a couple of friends yesterday. I had a turkey sandwich on a Parmesan bagel, a brownie, and a mocha (single shot). With tax and tip, it came to $21.67. The food and drink were good but not exceptional. Service was OK. The decor is boring and functional. This place is OK if you're in the neighborhood, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. Neat Coffee Shop for the whole family! Came in for a simple cup of coffee, left with some Highlights Magazines for my son, a customer appreciation card, helpful pamphlets and a smile on my face. You can sit at a table, lounge on a couch or if you're a kid be in your own corner while the parents do their adulting haha. The barrista here was very welcoming and truly enjoys working there. I will need to come back to truly lounge and try some of their menu items, for today I just grabbed a 16 Oz Cuppa Coffee with their in house creamer and a pump of vanilla. read more

Be warned about the double standards if you're not a usual here. Story time below: I'm currently working here with a colleague to get some work done. In a very stern and direct manner, we were told by the barista to keep on masks on at all times unless we are drinking, which is no big deal. We ordered our drinks (one iced, one hot), sit down, and were given our drinks in paper to-go cups although it was very clear that we came to work with laptops and book bags. A few minutes later, two guys come in and start talking to the barista. It's clear they all know each other. The two guys sit down at the table behind us and start talking (and have been for over 30 minutes at the time of this review) without masks. In the past 30 minutes, has the barista ask them to put their masks on? Nope. Did the two guys get a stern and direct briefing about the mask policy? No. Did they get paper to-go cups for their coffee? Nope: they got actual coffee mugs. Another person walked in, ordered her drink, and has been sitting down without a mask on and was given a glass cup for her iced drink. If you're not a usual customer here, expect to be treated differently. The only thing revolutionary here, as far as I can tell, is preferential treatment for the usual folks. read more

This is a cool place! Anti-harassment policy, a safe space, lots of books about POC issues (which are everyone's issues!!), revolutionary thought, fiction, children's books, used books, pins, art for sale, and more. No religious books which is nice for once. Very peaceful atmosphere. I got two books and a vegan mocha, my husband got a vegan bagel sandwich with fake turkey and an iced coffee drink. My mocha is one of the best I've ever had. About 10 tables, spaced for social distancing, everyone was wearing a mask except when they were eating or taking a sip of something. Free WiFi. Cool place. I'd come here again. It's next to my vet's office, so I'll be visiting each time I bring my doggie. Someone else in the reviews said it was hot in here. That was not the case during my visit. It was 93 degrees outside and I wore a cardigan inside since the AC was flowing nicely. Very comfortable temperature. read more

In the grand expanse of the political spectrum, there's this thing called left-of-center political thought. You know, still leaning moderate, except for the random "we're all in this together" flourishes here and there. But then there's this place. Marx, Mao, Lenin, and good ol' Ernesto aka "Che". All iconized and made very much at home here in one way or another. For this is Revolutionary Grounds, a small, quirky cafe nestled on 4th Avenue. Upon entrance you'll immediately notice enough stuff to make Joe McCarthy's head spin off, for there's socialist schwag for sale all over the place: bumper stickers, books, pins, art, t-shirts, you name it. Similarly themed posters adorn the walls, including one of a cat, leading the marching proletariat as distinguished Chairman Meow. You think Marxist study groups don't exist in this day and age? Wrong. They meet here weekly. Shiny golden bags of coffee beans grown by Zapatistas from Chiapas are also for sale and are being ground and brewed in store. Also in effect: language tables. Know a random language, like Hindi or Japanese? They have weekly/monthly meeting times when speakers, natives and learners alike, can get together and converse here. How does one say "mass collectivization" in Tagalog? I do not know. But what I do know is this: the soy latte I've had brewed here was good. But even better? Nay, WAY better? The basil lemonade. If you're from the Phoenix metro, imagine Sweet Republic's basil lime sorbet has elegantly melted into a tall, cold glass with ice. That's what this would be. Coupled with the fact that the outside temperature from which you've been wandering around for the past hour is around 108, nothing other than this glass could be more perfect. Some limited outdoor seating is available in the backyard, but why do that to yourself in August? The staff is really friendly so don't be afraid to enter. It's not as if the place is a cement, drab gray room with Stalin hiding just around the corner. It's inviting and a great little addition to Tucson's independent coffee scene. Just come on in, if only to be a socialist for 20 minutes before you go back to checking the latest stock quotes from your capitalist smart phone. 4 stars. read more

For one, it's stuffy and hot in the summer since they don't use A/C and just keep the doors open.The few seats they have are fairly old and not the best maintained. Sure, it has books for sale, but most of the material is fairly political, with a random sparse selection of books and crafts for children. I love this little social-justice oriented coffee shop. It's a cozy, cute little place with great front and back patios. Theirs is the best coffee in town, and it's fair-trade to boot. I've gotten sacks of books here, but sometimes I just borrow a book to read during my visit. [Not Burnt Out, Just Unscrewed's "First Friday Funnies" interactive improv is the highlight of the month; you should definitely check it out. Edit: No longer happening as they now have their own space.] Unlike most coffee shops, you'll often see people interacting or reading, Small groups tend to get together here. It's not uncommon to strike up a conversation with a stranger, which I rarely have the opportunity to do in other coffee shops. They do have free wi-fi, though, and it's a cozy spot to do your internet browsing. I previously commented on the quality of the food and the unprofessionalism of the baristas. It looks like the owners have made better hiring choices over the past year or so. I can typically count on good food from most of the staff. The owner, Joy, makes terrific food and the best cookies in town. She always has vegan stuff available, and almost always has gluten-free and soy-free options. Though vegans need not be leftists, one coffee shop in Tucson's artsy 4th Avenue district holds ample offerings for the two. Owned by two self-admitted "socially active leftist bibliophiles," Revolutionary Grounds offers a head-spinning array of intellectual books for sale, on topics ranging from Marxism to feminism to health and LGBTQ issues. Funky signs urge resistance against the man and the patriarchy. Stimulate your mind, then stimulate your heart rate with one of the tempting coffee drinks. But know that this cafe's offerings transcend traditional coffeehouse staples. The best part of stumbling upon this joint was the enticing vegan finds, many of which were as spicy as the bookshop's rhetoric. Items like Che's Fave (from the menu: vegan turkey, vegan peppered turkey, vegan cheese, avocado, romaine, pepperoncini, vegan mayo and hot sauce on sourdough bread); Anna G. Panini (hummus, avocado, tomato, cucumber and Siracha on multigrain); and Trotskyite's Treat (hummus on toasted pita with cucumber, tomato, romaine, kalamata and feta, spiced up with pepperoncini and hot sauce) were as flavorful as they sounded. (Dishes that aren't vegan can be made to be--I didn't notice the feta when I ordered.) The restaurant stocks an unexpected array of faux turkey options, not to mention a variety of tempting vegan baked items (we're horrified that we missed the vegan peanut butter pie). Bumper stickers, T-shirts and other merchandise will help inspire change. And did I mention the relaxed outdoor patio where employees gladly let us linger? The shop also hosts community groups, book clubs and others, which makes it apropos for people who want to have meaningful conversations without being rushed out of their table. When we were there, a lone employee was manning the counter and making all the food and drinks, so be forewarned this is not the quickest place to grab a quick bite. But what did you expect?
