We are usually a couple that likes to do exploring on our own. After reading about potential flash floods, we decided to book with a tour guide who would know if our safety was at risk. We were extremely pleased with our decision to do so. We had a wonderful experience. Our guide, Izzy, was awesome! Her family is Ali'i Kayaks. They are local and really know this area well (they've been hunting and fishing here for years). She was very accommodating and friendly from the very beginning, starting with getting plumeria flowers for each of the females in our group and explaining what the location of the flower in you hair means. Then she went through how to steer and maneuver the kayaks and all safety precautions. Once we got out of the kayaks to hike, she led the way and remained in the river until we had all passed through safely. She told us about Hawaiian culture, the plants, landmarks, and more as we hiked to the falls. She was folding/weaving flowers from grass as she walked and had made each of the females one. Other groups would slow down to listen as their guides were not doing the same. We spent plenty of time at the falls to swim and had time to eat the food/drinks we brought along. Before leaving the falls, she distributed bracelets she made for everyone. On the hike back, Izzy told us about local places to eat and farmers markets. She also called out two birds that they've raised and we even dug for worms and fed them out of our hands! She continued to tell us more local suggestions and stories as we kayaked back. The trip was well planed and guided by experienced local people. We enjoyed our kayaking in river and hiking along the river. Hiking along the river bank is mostly flat and easily managed, giving us enough time to spend at the waterfall and pool side. Our time was sell spend on this trip. read more

Our tour guide Kai and our secondary guide Ku was AMAZING. This kayaking and hike trip was so fun. We did get in the water during the hike and we got to swim at the waterfall for 45 minutes! He was very knowledgeable about everything we were passing and stopping. His sidekick dog was super friendly and joined us on the hike the entire way. It was our honeymoon and Kai made us a flower out of leaves !!!! Wow Amazing . It was very useful knowing what the natural toilet paper was. Our group of four had an outstanding time on our morning Wailua River/Secret Falls adventure, guided by Mana from Ali'i Kayaks. Mana was phenomenal: embodying the spirit of aloha, he was chill, experienced, knowledgeable, happy to take photos, etc. Whether kayaking or hiking, Mana gave us history and legend of the area, and played his ukulele during our hike...we loved it, other tours loved the music, too! Plus, if our group got spread out a bit, we always knew where he was...just follow the ukulele. The scenery was beautiful, lots of other people and tours, but somehow Mana managed to time it so our group had the Secret Falls to ourselves for a little bit. There was a strong head wind on the afternoon paddle back, so we got a good workout in! Water shoes with some grip are a must, especially for the river crossings on slippery rocks. Be sure to bring some snacks and water; it was a blast! read more

Fantastic trip with very knowledgeable guide. We were family of three and would go again in heart beat. Just keeping in mind, they try hard to double up people, so if you have an odd number, you may be paddling with stranger. That wasn't a problem for us, but just the heads up. Caught some rain pour while kayaking, that was fun. Just bring water shoes. Please! We had them, but saw few ppl in flipflops, very inappropriate for this type of activity. You will get wet and need to cross several slippery water streams. I actually wish they wouldn't let people without appropriate footwear to go. It's just accident/ twisted ankle waiting to happen and it may spoil it for others. Anyway, we had a great time. read more

SUPER fun day. The staff were all very friendly the entire day and really gave us interesting information duringthe kayaking as well as the hike. I learned a lot about Hawaia and Kauai and their history. The guides also took the time to take photos of everyone during the hike and kayaking part of the tour. They gave us rowing tips and helped us all down the river. When we disembarked they guided us through the forest and helped us cross the river. The walk to the falls is wonderful. Although you know people do it every day the hike was still a ton of fun and yuo felt as if you were going through dense vegetation. The falls were an amazingly good time. The water is cold, LOL, and it was refreshing to soak in the water. The guide also took everybody's picture one by one which was So very nice of him to do. What a great opportunity to experience the Island in a different way, and learn so much about the Island! My friend and I booked the Kayak to the Secret Falls tour. We're both relatively in shape, but that is definitely not required to experience this tour, we had some younger kids and some older family members on our tour as well, and no one seemed too exhausted, and honestly at points I was the last one in the hiking line. You'll be kayaking, hiking and swimming in falls, so I recommend wearing a comfortable bathing suit under comfortable (dry-able) hiking clothes, water shoes (no joke, you're walking through rivers), and a backpack to pack a lunch, water and snacks. We arrived at the check-in time, our tour guide found us and told us what we'd expect for the day. There's a bathroom at the check-in area, and some time to put on your sunblock. We then walked over to get our kayaks and launched into the river. The paddle was about an hour, our tour guide Dustin was SO GOOD, he provided so much interesting information about the history of the island, while keeping everyone together in the group and on the right route. After the paddle, we landed along a rocky shore, and geared up for our hike. I think the hike was about an hour each way, walking along rocks, rivers, and a boardwalk path, learning all about the vegetation along the way. Then we got the falls, SO COOL. It was a bit crowded, but some people on their way back made it seem over-crowded, and I didn't feel that way at all. Of course you're not going to have the falls to yourself, but if you jump in at the right time, you may even get a picture without others around you. The water is COLD, but worth it! After hanging at the falls for a bit, you reverse everything, hike and kayak back, where at shore our tour guide then air dropped the pictures he took of us throughout the day! read more

The kayaking was really fun, but the hike was even better! Our tour guide was Izzy and she made all the difference for an amazing tour. She made every effort to teach about the local flora and fauna and the Hawaiian history/culture. She also had a lot of recommendations for around the island for the rest of our trip which was great. We were a little late for our 1130 tour so they bumped us to the next group, no problem. Our Guide, Mana was friendly, informative and even sang along and played the ukelele on our hike which was a nice touch. There was little to no instruction for the kayaking itself-- he only checked to make sure we were holding the paddles correctly. It quickly became apparent who did and didn't know what they were doing Lol. But you learn quickly. The Wailua river was calm and peaceful, with beautiful surrounding flowers and plants. You will also kayak past famous locations of movie sets. Be sure to carry water and snacks as none are provided. Be sure to wear quick dry clothes over a swimsuit. They require strap on shoes. I went with waterproof hiking shoes which worked great for the kayaking and hiking-- but at the falls its very rocky (I slipped and fell and banged my knee & elbow) so water shoes/boots probably would have worked better for that portion. The hike is fairly flat but you go thru tall grass, climb over rocks, and cross several creeks (ranging from ankle to thigh deep)-- so a dry bag for your phone would be smart. The Falls are lovely-- many people climbed over the rocks in their swimsuits to "bathe" in the falls. Great photo opportunity! Overall, this was a great teamwork adventure activity-- involving 4mi kayaking and 1.5mi hiking! Our tour guide told stories, kept us on schedule, on track, helped dock our kayaks, and take photos. Would recommend Alii Kayaks to friends! read more

It was good to support a locally owned company. Kayak was 2 miles up. Me and the wife kept zig-zagging and needed to work on our paddle timing. The hike was 1.5 miles through slippery muddy rocks, knee deep river crossings, and on solid wooden planks. We got to learn about Hawaiian agriculture and history. The waterfall at end of the hike was a nice reward to eat our homemade lunch. What was more amazing was to see our tour guide, Izzy, do the whole tour barefoot. Izzy was very informative and entertaining. At then end of the tour we got to see her load the kayaks on the trailer all by herself. That girl's a boss. read more

He was helpful on the river for those who knew nothing about kayaking like us. The hike was very beautiful and adventurous. The trail was up and down through some rocks, river crossing, long vegetation wilderness type of trail. Best have some activity in your life before attempting. We went to secret falls which was magical and we're able to get into the water which was amazing. We are by no means gym rats.. so the average person can do it.. we throughly enjoyed our tour guide and well worth the money. It's a must if you come to the island. It was a lot of fun! Getting the hang of the kayaking took a little bit and it was longer than I thought but it was fun. The hike was easy, and our tour guide, Mana, did a great job and made the trip fun! Getting to the waterfall was beautiful to see! You stay there about an hour to eat, swim, take pics before you make the trip back. Bugs were not an issue on our trip, but wear a rash guard or sun shirt, hat, and proper water shoes (not tennis shoes) to get through the streams, rocky, slick areas.
